4 Carosse d Or 2012 Nuri Bilge Ceylan This year, the Carosse d Or of the Film Directors Guild will be awarded to Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Still, everyone seems to be happy despite their small worries and lives closed for any surprises. However, this happiness is a little disturbed by the arrival of Muzaffer who has made up his mind to shoot a film in this town where he had passed his childhood. His father, Emin, is bent on saving the small forest he cultivates on his property from confiscation by the authorities. His nephew, nine year-old Ali, who wants a musical watch. He has to carry an egg in his pocket for 40 days without cracking it, according to terms of an agreement made with his aunt, who has promised in return to convince Ali s father to purchase this much wanted item for his son. And Muzaffer s cousin, Saffet, who is a young town dweller whose affords are all doomed to failure by bad luck (or is it by his own rebelliousness) and who dreams of going to Istanbul. Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Istanbul, 1959) studied Engineering at Bosphorus University and Filmmaking at Mimar Sinan University in Istanbul. He received many awards with his films. Inside the coffin is an old woman. On first inspection, it s reckoned that the woman was buried alive. Behzat Ç., a homicide specialist, has never encountered a murder case like this before. Firstly, it s incomprehensible why the old woman would be killed in this way. The old woman was the mother of a retired police officer. When he begins investigating the officer, Behzat Ç. finds himself running up against a number of obstacles. The retired officer is known in the organization as Memduh, the Avarell Dalton, while the person who executed the crime calls himself Lucky Luke. Along with his teammates Harun, Hayalet and Akbaba, Behzat Ç. scours every corner of Ankara in an attempt to catch the accomplices, Gorbachev Hasan and Pembo. Serdar Akar (1964) graduated from the Cinema and Television Department of Mimar Sinan University in Following a series of shorts and documentaries, he made his debut feature On Board in 1998, which won many awards. His films had a major impact, both in terms of the Turkish film industry and as the work of an innovative auteur. Nezih Ünen graduated as an engineer from Boğaziçi University. He has always been interested in music, photography, writing and drama. In his 20-year music career as a composer, he has produced film music as well as music videos. This experience gave him the courage to make his first film, the documentary Lost Songs of Anatolia, which became something of a cult film because of its unique style. The film was shown at many international film festivals including Istanbul, Thessaloniki and Montpellier. This film aims to reveal the evils of the system in which village guards, who are paid and armed by the government, have been terrorizing the people by exploiting the power the state has conferred. lt deals with the steady increase in the killing of women, the outcome of prevailing militarism and a male-dominated social system which controls women and female labour. Dirt sets out to expose the dirty mechanism behind the village guard system and the murder of women. Yusuf Çetin (Ağrı, 1946) began his acting career at the Lale Oraloğlu Theatre in Besides theatre, he has acted in around 400 films. Yusuf Çetin founded the Ararat film company and is presently working on various projects developed around real stories that have taken place in the east and southeast of Turkey. 6

They build a brand new village with shabby old stone houses on a block of land they purchase. They name their new village Ecovillage. Their intention here is to enjoy life through ecological tourism, organic farming, and arts and culture. At first they coexist happily with the village folk from whom they purchased the land and old stone houses. In fact, there s even attraction between the leading intellectual character, Camille, and Ali, the village headman. She is a European character who settled in Turkey after years of working for environmental organizations like Greenpeace. Meanwhile, the village headman Ali has never left his village and has no education - a typical village person. The emotional bond between them develops in a humorous yet strange manner. Yu ksel Aksu (Muğla, 1966) graduated from the Dokuz Eylu l University, Department of Film and Television and went on to complete a Master s degree. In 2006 he wrote, produced and directed the very low budget feature film Ice Cream, I Scream which was Turkey s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award. Sumru s research brings her face to face with other people s sufferings and calls on her to examine how they deal with it. O zcan Alper (Artvin, 1975) studied physics and the history of science at Istanbul University. He then branched into poetry. His connections with poetry and music have inspired him to write several scripts. The Makam Trilogy marks his directorial debut. The film is made up of five different stories. Each story revolves around a different struggle and, just as in the world we live in, each character impinges upon the other, consciously or unconsciously. 10

When no support is forthcoming from the twin towns declared by the local mayor, he approaches the mayor of Diyarbakir for help when the two meet at an official function. The answer he receives is positive. One of the fire trucks surplus to Diyarbakir s needs is cleaned up, painted and made ready to be sent to Trabzon. A municipal worker by the name of Kosman is delegated to drive the fire truck from Diyarbakir to Trabzon. Kosman, a likeable Black Sea nationalist of around 30, has never met a Kurd in his life, nor ever set foot outside his hometown. Worse still, his thoughts about the south-east of the country are based entirely on hearsay. So the idea of the fire truck coming from Diyarbakir is not to his liking, and he puts his foot down, refusing to go. In the end, however, Kosman is persuaded to set off from Trabzon, and one morning he arrives in Diyarbakir, seeing the city for the first time. Murat Saraçoğlu (Istanbul, 1970) graduated from the Department of Radio and Television at Istanbul University. After working several years for various projects in cinema and television, he directed his first feature 120 in His second film O... This was followed by the successful reception of Fate and Confession, which were both screened in Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival. As the night becomes charged with tears, anger and regret, the outrage spills onto the dark streets, into sleazy hotel rooms. Although they re in league and he s on his own, Muharrem has made up his mind. Either the filth is cleaned up that night or he dies. Now she decides to move from Erzincan to Ankara with her remaining eight-year-old grandson Gu l Cemal. Kadife and her grandson start a new life in Ankara in a makeshift shack built with the help of her younger brother and other villagers. Mother Kadife earns money from weaving carpets and kilims. When Gu l Cemal attends high school, he is influenced by the daily political events there. He finds himself a new group of friends and, at the end of the first term, drops out of school with them. Gu l Cemal decides to join his friends and to go to the mountains and be a member of the PKK. Mother Kadife searches high and low for her grandson in a desperate bid to rescue him, to persuade him to leave the mountains. She travels to countless places to find him and never loses faith that some day she will be reunited with her grandson. Erdoğan Kar worked as assistant director to prominent directors such as Şerif Go ren, Zeki Ökten, Atıf Yılmaz, Ali Özgentu rk and Memduh Ün. Labyrinth is the code name of the operation conducted by Turkish intelligence to stop a second, more devastating attack that will plunge Turkey, the only democratic Muslim country in the region, into chaos and destroy the fragile balance of the Middle East. After the initial attack, Turkey becomes a battlefront for terrorists and Turkish, British and American intelligence officers. Everyone has his own agenda in the fight that stretches from Istanbul to Eastern Turkey and from Frankfurt to Northern Iraq. The story revolves around a group of Turkish intelligence officers and their race to stop the terrorist organization. Tolga O rnek (1972) studied metallurgical engineering at Istanbul Technical University. Specializing in convergent and emerging media, Pirhasan directed the leading online series Kate Modern for the social networking site Bebo, LG15: The Resistance for the LA-based production company Eqal and edited the interactive Chanel 4 series Dubplate Drama. In 2008 he co-founded Polite Company, an independent production company specialising in music videos, documentaries and online content. Pirhasan has also worked extensively in music videos and featurettes with artists such as Klaxons, Jack Penate, Pete Doherty and The Bronx. Last Stop Salvation is his first feature film. 16

Kemal, a university student of around 20, hears news of the fall of socialism on a tiny radio in the shambles of his shared student flat. Before his eyes, a world view he has newly espoused, that has shaped his value system, is being destroyed by the people who live within that very system. Despite the debacle unfolding on their doorstep, the revolutionary organization Kemal belongs to continues resolutely with its struggle in universities and labour circles, defying all kinds of police and state oppression. If Kemal s political struggle is consuming, so too is his emotional world. He nurses a platonic love for Leyla, a political comrade, his feelings so intense that they sometimes overtake his revolutionary duties. When his closest friend and comrade Abidin is killed under police torture, Kemal is recruited to the armed wing of the organization by Pala, the local man in charge. As such, he is now illegal. F. Serkan Acar (Artvin, 1975) started to study Pyschology at Istanbul University in At the university he wrote film critics and did interviews for cinema magazines. After graduation he started working on his Master s degree on cinema-tv at the same university. In 1998 he started to work in cinema and tv productions as assistant director. In 2004 he made the documentary film Bread about a strike. This documentary was screened in many countries. In 2007 he founded Kuzey Film Production and started to work as an independent filmmaker.
