9 PREFACE This year we are celebrating the 15th biennal of the UMTIK conferences which started as a national conference in UMTIK became an international conference in Hence, this year we also celebrate the 10th biennal of UMTIK as an international conference. UMTIK 2012 starts with a special event, Machining Day, as a Tribute to Professor Yusuf Altıntaş. There will be a keynote speech and 12 papers and 3 technical sessions to be presented by his colleagues, co-workers and students in four plenary sessions on the first day of UMTIK 2012 on 19th Keynote speech will be delivered by Toshimichi Moriwaki on Recent Advances in Machine Tool and Machining Technologies. Pamukkale, Denizli is selected as the venue of UMTIK 2012, because Denizli is the home town of Professor Altıntaş. Pamukkale is one of Turkey s top attractions and famous with its cotton-look terraces, thermal waters and the ancient city of Hierapolis. There will be 60 papers to be presented in the regular sessions and 17 papers to be presented in six special sessions on three different topics: Design Science organized by Prof. Yoshiyuki Matsuoka, Optimization of Mechanical Systems organized by Dr. Erdem Acar and Micro Manufacturing Processes and Applications by Dr. Yiğit Karpat in three parallel sessions. There will be four keynote speeches to be delivered in the last three days of the conference: New Global Strategies in Manufacturing as a tele-conference by Prof. Francesco Jovane, Recent Advances in High Performance Machining and Machine Tools by Prof. Jun Ni, Tribology of Hot And Warm Forming of Lightweight Alloys by Prof. Ahmet Alpas and Integrated Compound/Hybrid Tool-Based Micro Machining by Prof. Mustafizur Rahman and a plenary speech Recent Developments in Metrology for design and Metrology by Dr. Tanfer Yandayan in plenary sessions. There will be a workshop on the third day to discuss the status of the laser applications in Türkiye: three cases will be presented to be discussed by the participants.

11 PREFACE TO MACHINING DAY IN UMTIK 2012 Being one of the most common processes for manufacturing of machinery, Machining suits well to the scope of UMTIK which covers variety of topics in Mechanical Engineering. There have always been sessions for machining in UMTIK conferences, however this year we have a special day dedicated completely to machining. There is a pleasant coincidence behind this: This year UMTIK is held in Pamukkale, Denizli which is very close to the hometown of Prof. Altintas of University of British Columbia, Canada, who is a well-known authority in the area of machining research. Prof. Altintas and his lab, Manufacturing Research Lab (MAL), have been working in machining processes and machine tools for almost 3 decades developing models, systems, software and solutions for the needs of machining industries in various sectors such as aerospace, automotive, die and mold etc. He and his research team have had significant impact in improving productivity of machining processes and machine tools by applying scientific methods to a field which has been considered as an art and tackled mainly by experience-based and trial-and-error approaches. Based on these achievements, Prof. Altintas is recognized as an authority in both academia and industry, and has received numerous awards from various societies and companies in the world. In order to recognize his contributions to the field, we have organized a special day dedicated to Prof. Altintas with presentations from current and ex-members of MAL. We hope to create a dynamic atmosphere stimulating interaction among researchers working in this field. 13 WELCOME SPEECH BY PROF. Y. ALTINTAŞ Dear Colleagues: I would like to welcome you to UMTIK 2012 and to Denizli, where I grew up and finished high school. I was born and raised in Bekilli up until I completed grade 8 in As Bekilli is 85 km away from Pamukkale, and there wasn t any high school in the town, like most of my class mates, I came to the city of Denizli where I completed high school in I met my wife, Nesrin, while at high school, and there will be a class reunion to celebrate our 41st graduation anniversary in this very same hotel on Friday, June 22nd. I ran a wine store on top of Pamukkale Mountain while I studied in high school, and had a business card with a telephone number 9 at the age of fifteen! They were hard times, but between the ages of 15 and 18, I gained survival skills on these mountains as a young wine shopkeeper. I finished my studies at the Istanbul Technical University in 1975, learned English and was exposed to Machine Tool engineering at UMIST Manchester and the MKE Machine Tool Plant in Kirikkale before leaving for Canada in 1978 to study for my Master s degree. I have been working in Canada as an engineer and professor in the field of machining and machine tool engineering since that time, and Canada has become a peaceful and beautiful second country to me. I have been attending UMTIK conferences for many years, not only because of my good friend of 30 years, Prof. Engin Kilic, but also because I want to contribute to my Motherland which educated me and sent me as a present to Canada. I have enjoyed being with young researchers and colleagues from Turkey and abroad in my native environment. I have always been called the Turkish professor who works in Canada!

14 Professor Engin Kilic, and my former associates, Prof. Erhan Budak and Prof. Ismail Lazoglu, know of my deep affection for my home town, Bekilli, and also for Denizli. They created this special conference on machining research, which has been my passion since 1976, and decided to hold the conference here in Denizli where I grew up, a city which I still love. Many of my former associates who are now well established academics Budak and Lazoglu from Turkey, Spence, Engin, Erkorkmaz, Park and Jun from Canada; Shamato, Shirase. Onozuka and Sencer from Japan; Okwudire from USA; Movahhedy from Iran; Eyniyan from Sweden; Liu Qiang and Yang from China; Munoa from Spain; Holkup from Czech Republic; and Turner from England. Some of them are able to attend the conference and will present articles on machining in the special session. My current Ph.D. assistant, Murat Kilic, and former student, Caner Eksioglu, will present recent work carried out in my laboratory. My senior colleague, industrial partner and dear friend, Prof. Hoshi, will present an article on the on-line chatter detection and avoidance method he developed for industry. The keynote speaker, Professor Toshi Moriwaki, is not only a distinguished machine tool and precision engineering academic, but has also been a very close personal friend for more than two decades. He will give a talk on the recent developments in machine tool technology. There are three CIRP Taylor Medal winners attending the conference, and all three won the awards for their contributions to machine tool dynamics and chatter. Prof. Hoshi received the Taylor Medal in 1971 for the modeling of process damping in chatter stability; Prof. Moriwaki received the Medal in 1976 for his paper related to the modeling of machine tool dynamics; and Prof. Budak received the Medal in 2003 for developing a new chatter theory in milling while he was my student. Prof. Budak applied his theory to the machining of jet engine impellers at Pratt & Whitney Canada, and was the first to receive the Taylor Medal while working in both Canada and Turkey.

Machlaclan (2010), UBC Killiam Teaching Prize of Engineering (2011), Gold Medal of Engineers Canada (2011) and SME Albert M. Sergent Progress Award (2012). He holds an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Stuttgart University. He currently directs NSERC CANRIMT Machining Research Network across Canada. He holds the NSERC P&WC Industrial Research Chair Professorship to develop next generation Virtual High Performance Machining Technology.
