The aim of this catalogue is to provide you, in a structured manner, with the names of the publishing houses,their profiles, their field of activities, as well as the names and addresses of important contact persons.

2 2 TURKISH PUBLISHERS BOOK TRADE IN TURKEY ZERRİN YILMAZ, AKIN DİRİK The book trade forges links between cultures. In other words, it is the heart and soul of intellectual life and is one of the essential characteristics of any modern country. The reforms in the field of education were one of the first changes that took place after the foundation of the Turkish Republic. The Latin alphabet was introduced and, thanks to a large-scale and comprehensive initiative, the literacy rate was substantially boosted over a short period of time. As the result of the long war of independence, as well as the weakened economic and social system of the Ottoman Empire, a private sector with sufficient financial resources for investments at its disposal did not exist in the young Republic. At the first congress of the publishing sector in 1939, new initiatives and solutions were debated. Despite prevailing ideological differences, the founders of the Republic decided to assign the State with this task. The Ministry of National Education became the most significant publisher and was responsible for printing all national text books. Masters of classic literature were also translated into Turkish and published by the Ministry. Turkey started changing due to new economic policies introduced during the 1980 s. The State s share in the national economy and industry decreased, the obstacles arising from the tariff system were removed, and Turkey opened itself up to international competition. These developments in turn also had a positive effect on the publishing sector and the number of private companies started to increase rapidly. Cooperation between Turkish and international publishers started to develop. The publishing sector in turn started to develop a more modern perspective. New publishing houses were founded and across Turkey new book shops opened. New technological developments in the publishing sector were also introduced on a large scale. In short, the publishing sector experienced a dynamic and rapid development. The Turkish Publishers Association was founded in 1985 with the aim of protecting and representing all the publishers interests. And in 2002 it became a proud member of the International Publishers Association (IPA). The publishers also took further steps in terms of organisational structure and in the years that followed they founded the Association of Press and Publishing, as well as other professional associations. Freedom of thought, of publication, as well as the freedom of expression, are the key principles of the Turkish publishing sector. Current efforts made by the Turkish professional associations have been internationally praised by the IPA as exemplary.

In order to promote the Turkish language, the Turkish culture and publishing sectors, new projects are initiated such as the newly founded Yunus Emre Institute which is set to carry out similar activities to those of other prominent institutes like the British Council, the Goethe Institute, or the Instituto Cervantes. Furthermore, several publishing houses were supported in a number of countries in the framework of the TEDA Programme, with the aim to present Turkish literature to the world.
