Müzecilik tarihinin ölümsüz ismi Osman Hamdi Bey in kurduğu müze, 13 Haziran 1891 günü kapılarını ziyaretçilerine açtı. Savaş yıllarında bile o kapılar hiç kapanmadı. Sonraki yıllarda Osmanlı İmparatorluğu dramatik biçimde küçüldükçe küçüldü. Ama İstanbul Arkeoloji Müzesi, kaybedilen toprakların tarihini, anılarını simgeleyen eserlerle büyüdükçe büyüdü. Sonunda çoğul hale geldi ve adı İstanbul Arkeoloji Müzeleri olarak kullanılmaya başlandı. Mezopotamya dan Balkanlar a Mısır dan Afganistan a kadar muazzam bir coğrafya, bugün 120 yaşına basan bu müzelerde buluşuyor. Tıpkı, Anadolu nun binlerce yıllık tarihinden gelip geçen sayısız uygarlık gibi. Elinizdeki dergi, böyle eşsiz bir emaneti gelecek kuşaklara ulaştırabilme çabasının parçası. In a publication bearing the name Museum such as ours, it is not allowed to omit reminding that this year, we celebrated the 120 th anniversary of the inauguration of the Imperial Musem, the Müze-i Hümayun, later called the İstanbul Museum of Archaeology. The museum was founded 120 years ago by the hero of the history of Turkish museums, Osman Hamdi Bey, and opened its gates on 13 June These gates were never closed up until today, even throughout the years of war. In the period following the opening of the museum, the Ottoman Empire s territories were reduced in dramatic dimensions. In contrary, the stanbul Archaeological Museum continued to substantially enlarge its collections so as to include a great number of treasures representing the history of the glorious past centuries and the memory of the once conquered lands. Eventually, subdivided in several buildings, the museum became plural and took the name of Archaeological Museums of stanbul. Various regions of a large geography stretching from Mesopotamia to the Balkans, from Egypt to Afghanistan meet each other in these Museums presently 120 years old. In doing so, they follow the path of the numerous civilizations which flourished on the Anatolian soil throughout thousands of years of history. The publication you are holding in your hands is a modest contribution to the effort aimed at bequeathing this unique heritage to future generations. We thank you for sharing our enthusiasm. Doğduğu topraklardan alınıp, Almanya ya götürülen Hattuşa/Boğazköy Sfenksi, 100 yıl sonra yuvasına dönmeye hazırlanıyor... Anadolu toprakları nice uygarlıkların anayurdu olmuş. Bu uygarlıkların mirası olan birbirinden değerli eserler ne yazık ki kök saldıkları topraklardan koparılmış. Ama şimdilerde hepimizi sevindiren gelişmeler hız kazanmış durumda. Hititler in (M.Ö M.Ö. 1200) başkenti Hattuşa da yapılan kazılarda çıkarılan, bakım ve onarım amacıyla Almanya ya götürülen Hattuşa Sfenksi, 100 yıla yakın bir ayrılıktan sonra yuvasına dönmek için gün sayıyor. Onu beklerken gelin Çorum un Boğazköy İlçesi ne, yani Hattuşa ya doğru yol alalım ve buradaki kazıların tarihi sürecine bir göz atalım. Hattuşa nın kalıntılarını ilk olarak 1834 de Fransız gezgin, mimar ve arkeolog Charles Texier bulmuş. Texier in ardından gelen meraklı araştırmacılar bir açık hava tapınağı olan Yazılıkaya yı, Büyük Tapınak ı, Büyük Kale yi ve çevresini keşfetmişler. Bu kişiler bölgede kazılar, sondajlar yapmış, ilk çivi yazılı tableti bulmuş, Yazılıkaya kabartmalarının kopyalarını çıkartmışlar da bulunan 2 bin 500 çivi yazılı tabletten sonra buranın Hattuşa olduğu ancak anlaşılmış yılında kazılar Alman Arkeoloji Enstitüsü ve Alman Şark Cemiyeti nin katılımıyla yeni bir boyut kazanmış. Kazılar ve daha önce yapılan çalışmaların yardımıyla ilk kez eksiksiz ve daha doğru bir topoğrafik harita çıkmış ortaya. Bedrich Horozny nin çivi yazılı tabletlerin yardımıyla 1915 te Hitit dilini çözmesi çalışmalar için milat olmuş. Sırlar aydınlanıyor 100 yıllık çalışmalar, imparatorluğun toprak altında sakladığı sırlarını bir bir gün yüzüne çıkarıyor. Hattuşa nın merkezinde kale bulunuyor, kalenin kuzeyinde kurulan aşağı şehirde imparatorluğa ait evler ve Büyük Mabet yer alıyor. Güneyde kurulan yukarı şehir ise sandık şeklinde yapılmış kalın surlarla çevrili. Surlardan dışarıya açıian Kral Kapısı, Sfenksli Kapı, Potern (gizli kapı), Aslanlı Kapı ziyaretçilerin ilgi odağı. Sfenksli Kapı şehrin en yüksek noktasında bulunuyor. Berlin de kalan Sfenks Şehri her türlü kötülükten ve olumsuzluklardan koruyabilecek kadar güçlü ve görkemli Hattuşa Sfenks i, aslan gövdeli, insan yüzlü ve kanatlı metre yüksekliğindeki cüssesiyle bir zamanlar şehrin güney kapısının sağ tarafında şehri bekliyormuş. Ne var ki, Alman arkeologlar, Boğazköy kazılarında ortaya çıkan 10 bin 400 tableti ve iki sfenkse ait parçaları, temizlemek, onarmak amacıyla 1915 ve 1917 yıllarında Berlin e götürmüşler. Çalışmalar tamamlandıktan sonra sfenkslerden bir tanesi 1924 yılında, tabletler de 1942 ye kadar partiler halinde İstanbul a geri gönderilmiş. Diğer sfenks ise, anayurduna gönderilmek yerine Berlin Pergamon Müzesi nde sergilenmeye başlanmış. 8 Hasret bitiyor Neredeyse 100 yıldır devam eden bir mücadele. 11 Hattusha felt unhappy. One of its protectors was thousands of kilometres away. It kept hoping that its child would return one day... And finally its hopes are coming to fruition... The Hattusha (Boğazköy) Sphinx which was sent to Germany nearly one hundred years ago is ultimately on its way back to its homeland. The Anatolian soil was homeland to so many civilizations. Numerous objects constituting the heritage of these civilizations were uprooted from their place of origin. Recent developments indicate that the opposite trend is now gaining momentum. The Sphinx, unearthed during the excavations carried out at the beginning of the last century, at the site of Hattusha, the capital city of the Hittite Kingdom ( BC), which was then sent to Germany for maintenance and repair is now counting the days to return to its home after nearly one hundred years. Let s examine first the origins of the archaeological work undertaken long-time ago at the Hattusha historical site situated within the borders of present-day Boğazköy county, province of Çorum. A French traveller, architect and archaeologist, Charles Texier was the first to discover the ruins at Hattusha in Researchers following him discovered the open air shrine Yazılıkaya, the Grand Temple, the Big Castle and the surroundings. They performed excavations, found the first cuneiform script tablets, made copies of the Yazılıkaya bas-reliefs. It is only following the discovery of 2500 cuneiform tablets in 1906 that the site was identified as Hattusha. The excavations acquired a new dimension with the involvement of the German Archaeological Institute and the German Oriental Society. An exhaustive topographic map of the area was drawn up. The real breakthrough was achieved when in 1915, Bedrich Horozny succeeded in decoding the Hittite language by decrypting the cuneiform tablets. Secrets brought to light The century-long archaeological work resulted in the progressive discovery of the secrets of the Hittite Empire. The castle situated at the centre of Hattusha, the Grand Temple and various housing components were found in the lower town located at the north of the castle, the upper town established in the southern flank surrounded by thick trunk formed ramparts, the various gates, Royal Gate, Sphinxes Gate (situated at the city s highest peak), the Poterne (secret castle door, postern) and the Lions Gate which constitute the focus of interest of the visitors. The Sphinx stays in Berlin... The powerful Hattusha Sphinx believed to protect the city from all evil has the face of a human, the body of a lion, and is endowed with wings. The 2.58 meters tall statue was originally standing guard at the right side of the city s southern gate. In the years , German archaeologists took the cuneiform tablets and the parts of the two sphinxes stemming from the diggings at Boğazköy to Berlin, in order to be cleaned, assembled, restored, and eventually repatriated. One of the sphinxes was returned to Turkey in 1924, also a number of tablets were sent back to İstanbul in batches from 1924 to1942. Unfortunately, the second sphinx was not returned to its homeland, but kept in Berlin and put on display at the Pergamon Museum. The longing comes to an end A struggle which has been going on for almost one hundred years... A sort of marathon race... Minister of Culture and Tourism Ertuğrul Günay is happy to be the one to cross the finish line. Proud to announce the return to Turkey of the Boğazköy (Hattusha) Sphinx, a great longing comes to an end, says Minister Günay. He characterizes his feelings as a great satisfaction. He states that, in compliance with the Memorandum of Understanding on the return of the Boğazköy Sphinx, signed with the German side at the end of the bilateral meeting held in Berlin on 13 May 2011, a group of Turkish experts was sent to Berlin end of May to review, with the assistance of their colleagues from the Pergamon Museum, the technical circumstances under which the Sphinx would be removed from its Hattuşa Örenyeri Aslanlı Kapı sfenksleri. Almanya da 13 Mayıs ta yapılan toplantı sonucunda imzalanan mutabakat zaptına göre Boğazköy Sfenksi nin ülkemize getirilmesi amacıyla Türk restorasyon ve konservasyon uzmanlarının Almanya da görevlendirildiğini hatırlatan Günay, eserin yerinden sökülmesi ve paketlenmesi konusunda Berlin Pergamon Müzesi uzmanlarıyla değerlendirmelerde bulunduklarını ekleyerek gelişmeleri şöyle özetliyor: Anlaşmaya göre 28 Kasım 2011 tarihine kadar Boğazköy Sfenksi nin Çorum Müzesi Müdürlüğü nde sergilenmeye hazır hale getirilmesini planladık. Ancak daha önce, ait olduğu topraklara getirilmesini düşünüyoruz. Kazıdan çıkarılarak restorasyon amacıyla gönderilen tabletlerden 3 bin civarında tablet yılları arasında partiler halinde ülkemize iade edilmiş yılında ise geriye kalan yaklaşık 7 bin 400 tabletin iadesi sağlanmış ve Ankara Anadolu Medeniyetleri Müzesi nde koruma altına alınmıştı. Yurt dışındaki eserlerimiz Yasadışı yollarla yurt dışına götürülen diğer eserlerimizin de iadesi için ısrarlı bir çalışma içinde olduklarını belirten Bakan Günay, üst yarısı Boston Güzel Sanatlar Müzesi nde, alt yarısı ise Antalya Müzesi nde bulunan Yorgun Herakles heykelinin iadesi konusunda da önemli aşamalar kaydettiklerini belirtiyor ve devam ediyor: Ayrıca British Museum da bulunan Samsat Steli, Louvre Müzesi nde sergilenen II. Selim Türbesi ne ait çini pano hakkında çalışmalar devam ediyor. Bunun yanı sıra yurt dışında bulunan eserlerimizin tespiti ve yurt dışına yasadışı yollardan çıkan diğer eserler konusunda da çalışmalar titizlikle devam ediyor. Ancak Boğazköy Sfenksi nin ülkemize iadesinin 90 yıldan fazla bir zaman aldığı düşünülürse kültür varlıklarının ülkemize iadesi ile ilgili ne kadar yoğun çaba gösterilmesi gerektiği anlaşılabilir. Bu konuda sürekli ve değişmeyen bir politikanın yürütülmesi gerekiyor. Kültür varlıklarının tarihi süreç içinde bilimsel olarak değerlendirilebilmesi için ait olduğu topraklarda sergilenmesi gerektiğinin altını da çizen Bakan Günay, Bir eserin tek başına herhangi bir koleksiyonda bulunması bilimsel açıdan bir önem arz etmez diyor ve devam ediyor: Eserin nereden çıktığı, nereye ait olduğu ve bulunduğu kültür tabakası, onun bilimsel anlamda ait olduğu tarihsel süreç içindeki yeri bilinmeden değeri ortaya konulamaz. Bu düşünce tarzı bütün dünyadaki bilim adamları tarafından da benimseniyor. Ancak kültür varlığı ticareti yapanlar bu durumu ticari boyuta taşıyorlar. HAZİNE BEKÇİLERİ Mitolojide sfenksler, her yaratığın şekline girebilen hazine bekçileri olarak bilinirler. Aslan vücutlu, bazen de kanatlı ve yılan kuyruklu olarak resmedilirler. Mısır sfenksi, antik bir efsanevi yaratıktır. Gövdesi uzanan bir aslan ve kafası genellikle bir firavun kafasının şeklini alır. Aslanlar güneş ile bağlantıları nedeniyle antik Mısırlılar tarafından kutsal hayvan sayılırlardı. Yunan Mitolojisi nde yer alan tek sfenks, yıkım ve kötü şansı temsil eden, benzersiz bir şeytandır. Kadın kafası olan, kanatlı bir aslana veya pençeleri, tırnakları, göğüsleri aslandan, kuyruğu yılandan, kanatları kuştan oluşan bir kadına benzer. Anadolu daki insan başlı aslan sfenkslerine Hitit, Lidya ve Frigya uygarlıklarında daha çok heykel olarak rastlanır. Cinsiyetleri belirsizdir. Mühürlerin, vazoların üzerinde otururken ya da yürürken gösterilir. Boğazköy kazılarında kapı geçitlerini koruyan dört sfenks yontusu bulundu. Sfenkslerden biri Berlin de, biri İstanbul da sergileniyor. Diğer ikisi bulundukları kapı girişlerini korumaya devam ediyorlar. GUARDIANS OF TREASURE In mythology, sphinxes are known to be guardians of treasure who have the ability to metamorphose into any creature s body. They are generally depicted as lion-bodied, sometimes endowed with wings and a snake s tail. The Egyptian sphinx is a legendary antique creature. It has the body of a lion lying on the ground and the head of a pharaoh. Lions were considered holy by the Ancient Egyptians due to their link to the sun. The only sphinx in Greek mythology is a devil representing destruction and bad luck. It has the head of a woman, the body of a winged lion or, looks like a woman who has the paws, fingernails and breasts of a lion, the tail of a snake and the wings of a bird. The sphinxes with the head of a human and the body of a lion are mostly found as statues in the Hittite, Lydian and Phrygian civilizations in Anatolia. Their gender is undetermined. They are depicted seated or walking on vases and seals or stamps. Four sphinx statues were discovered at the Boğazköy historical site. One of them is in İstanbul, the second one still in Berlin for the time being and the two others continue their eternal guard at Hattusha s entrance. 10

The Minister of Culture and Tourism declares further: According to our agreement with the German side, the Boğazköy Sphinx should be made ready to be placed on display at the Museum of Çorum until the date of 28 November However, we are currently in the process of making arrangements to bring it back earlier, possibly during the course of the month of July. Concerning the Hittite cuneiform tablets from Boğazköy sent to Germany to be repaired, he emphasizes that of those tablets were returned to Turkey between 1924 and 1942, while the remaining roughly of them were recovered in 1987 and are currently under protection at the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara. Anatolian artefacts abroad The Minister: We persist in our efforts to ensure the recovery of the Anatolian artefacts taken out of the country. We achieved significant progress in the negotiations concerning the restitution of the upper half of the Tired Heracles statue, currently at Boston s Museum of Fine Arts, and whose lower half is at the Antalya Archaeological Museum. Further negotiations, concerning the Samsat (Samosata) stele at the British Museum in London, the ceramic tiled panel stemming from the Tomb of Ottoman Sultan Selim II at the Louvre Museum in Paris are being pursued. Moreover, we continue our efforts to establish the whereabouts of many different pieces which were taken out of the country. Considering that the restitution of the Boğazköy Sphinx took more than 90 years, we must realize that intensive work is required to achieve the return of the country s cultural property. We must persevere on a permanent national policy concerning this issue. Underlining that, on the other hand, the preservation and displaying of historical artefacts at their original geographical locations is necessary for in-depth scientific research, the Minister affirms: It is necessary to keep and display cultural property at their place of origin in order to be able to effectuate an adequate scientific evaluation and analysis on the subject matter. A single object, separated from its natural and cultural environment, on display somewhere in some collection is irrelevant from a scientific point of view. A scientific work on it can only be performed by being aware of its origin, by seeing exactly where it belongs to, from which cultural background and layer it is stemming and by being able to evaluate its place within the historical process. This approach is shared by the majority of scholars around the world. The people who are involved in the trade of cultural property and only care about the commercial dimension of things, do a great disservice to scientific research. A long journey Background of the struggle for the repatriation of the Hattusha Sphinx: 1974: The negotiations concerning the repatriation of the Sphinx re-started following the diplomatic recognition of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) by Turkey 1987: Turkey officially applied to UNESCO for the recovery of the Sphinx in July. Following the examination of the documents by the two sides in October in Berlin, it was officially decided to resume the bilateral negotiations between Turkey and the GDR. 1991: A Verbal Note was presented to the Federal Republic of Germany in order to demand the resumption of the talks suspended as a result of Germany s re-unification in : Following cross-examination of available documents, the German side could not find any evidence to contradict Turkey s claim to ownership of the Sphinx. 1990: A resolution on the issue was adopted in January by the UNESCO Committee for Promoting the Return of Cultural Property to its Countries of Origin 2000: The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs presented another Verbal Note to the German side to demand an exchange of information and documents. 2001: A new resolution was adopted in March by the UNESCO Committee for Promoting the Return of Cultural Property to its Countries of Origin, recommending the resumption of the bilateral talks. 2011: agreement was reached in April in Ankara, between the delegations of the Turkish and German sides concerning the return of the Sphinx to Turkey. 13 May 2011: A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the two sides in Berlin, according to which the repatriation of the Boğazköy Sphinx held at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin for 94 years would to take place before the 28 th of November May 2011: Turkish and German experts examined in Berlin the technical details concerning the transport of the Sphinx. Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism, Ertuğrul Günay declared that the Sphinx would be inaugurated at the Boğazköy Museum on 28 th of November 2011, the 25 th Anniversary of the inscription of the Boğazköy-Hattusha historical site on the UNESCO World Heritage List. 11

16 14 TARTIŞMALI DÜNYA MİRASI Berlin de Müzeler Adası diye adlandırılan bölgede bulunan Pergamon Müzesi, kompleksin son müzesi olarak 1930 da inşa edilmiş. Pergamon, yılda yaklaşık üç milyon ziyaretçiyi ağırlayan müzeler kompleksi içinde en çok ilgi göreni da UNESCO nun Dünya Mirasları Listesi ne eklenmiş. Pergamon Müzesi, klasik antik çağ eserlerinin bulunduğu Antik Koleksiyon, Ortadoğu Müzesi, İslam Sanatı Müzesi gibi üç ayrı bölümde, çok sayıda anıtsal parçaya ev sahipliği yapıyor. Bergama Zeus Sunağı, Milet Pazar Kapısı, İştar Kapısı ve Mshatta Alınlığı gibi eserler yanında Sümer, Asur, Pers medeniyetlerinden de pek çok değerli eseri bünyesinde bulunduruyor müze. Pergamon Müzesi, toplanıp birleştirilerek sergilenen bu eserler sayesinde tüm dünyanın ilgisini çekmiş ancak özellikle Bergama ve Milet ten alınan eserlerle oluşturulan koleksiyonun meşruluğu konusundaki tartışmalar bitmemiş. Türkiye, bu eserlerin gün ışığına çıktığı ülke olarak koleksiyonun iadesi için Alman Hükümeti ne başvurmuş. Controversial World Heritage The Pergamon Museum is the last museum constructed (in 1930) at Berlin s Museum Island (Museumsinsel), which in 1999 was inscribed on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Last but not least, Pergamon Museum, visited by 850,000 people every year, is the most popular within that complex of museums which is hosting yearly around three million visitors. The museum is subdivided into the Antiquity Collection, the Middle East Museum, and the Museum of Islamic art. The Pergamon houses original-sized, reconstructed monumental buildings such as the Pergamon Zeus Altar, the Market Gate of Miletus, the Ishtar Gate, The Mshatta façade, along with invaluable pieces from the Sumerian, Assyrian and Persian civilizations. The museum is drawing the world s attention certainly due to its rich collection. However, there is controversy over the legitimacy of the acquisition of the collection consisting mainly of pieces stemming from excavations in Turkey; in particular the treasures from Bergama and Millet. Turkey, the original country of the excavations, demands from the German government the repatriation of the collection to its homeland. Yeni Asur kabartması (sağ sayfa). Abdülhamit in cömertliği olmasa bu müze hiçbir zaman kurulamazmış. Bunun müzeyi ziyaret eden hemen herkesin ortak düşüncesi olduğunu, iyi niyetli bir müze yetkilisinin size yaklaşıp, Hoş geldiniz, burası sizin vatan toprağınız sayılır demesinden de anlıyorsunuz. Evet, Pergamon Müzesi, Manisa, Didim, Priene, Boğazköy den toplanıp getirilen eserlerle kurulmuş... Bergama dan Pergamon a Müze nin kuruluş öyküsü aslında Bergama da başlar yıllarında Aydın yöresinde çalışan arkeoloji meraklısı Alman yol mühendisi Carl Humann, Bergama tepelerinde gezinirken, tesadüfen birkaç friz parçası bulur ve deneme kazıları yapar. Bu kazılarda ortaya çıkardığı antik parçalar Berlin Müzesi nin de ilgisini çeker yılları arasında Carl Humann, Berlin Müzesi nin desteğiyle kazılara devam eder ve ünlü Zeus Sunağı nın kalıntılarını ve kabartmalarını ortaya çıkarır. Daha sonra zamanın Osmanlı Padişahı II. Abdülhamit in özel izniyle sunağın bölümleri numaralandırılıp özenle sökülerek, 1886 yılına kadar aralıklarla parça parça Berlin e taşınır. Taşınma işlemleri sırasında bu parçalar katırlarla, develerle Akropol den aşağıya indirilir, oradan mandaların çektiği kağnılarla Çandarlı Limanı na götürülür, daha büyük gemilere yüklenmek üzere İzmir Limanı na taşınır. Daha sonra da Kuzey Denizi ndeki limanlara indirilerek demiryoluyla Berlin e götürülür. On yıl süren bu yolculuk serüveni Berlin Müzesi nde son bulur. Ancak bu muhteşem Altar a eski müze dar gelir. Eserin bugün sergilendiği Pergamon Müzesi ne yerleşmesi ise 1930 ları bulur. Pergamon dan Rusya ya II. Dünya Savaşı nın sonlarına doğru gerçekleşen Berlin bombardımanında Pergamon Müzesi ağır hasar alınca, eserlerin korunabilmesi için çareler aranır, kimi korunaklı yerlere saklanır, bazı büyük parçaların etrafına duvarlar örülür. Yerinden yurdundan kopartılmış antik çağ şaheserleri için bu tedbirler de yetersizdir te Kızıl Ordu, Berlin in doğusunu işgal edince, yeniden sürgün günleri başlar. Müzedeki eserler bir tür savaş ganimeti olarak ya da yağmadan, yangınlardan kurtarılmak bahanesiyle bu kez de Rusya ya taşınır. Rusya nın, dost ve müttefiki olan Doğu Almanya ya bu eserleri geri vermesi 1958 e kadar sürer. Verir vermesine ama koleksiyonun önemli parçalarından bazıları da Rusya da kalır. Bu değerli parçalar halen Moskova daki Puşkin Müzesi nde ve St. Petersburg daki Ermitaj Müzesi nde saklanıyor. Uzun yıllar Doğu Berlin sınırları içinde kalan Pergamon Müzesi, 1990 da iki Almanya nın birleşmesiyle batılı ziyaretçilerin de ilgi odağı olur. Kısaca özetleyecek olursak; Almanlar Osmanlılar dan, Ruslar da Almanlar ın elinden almış bu paha biçilmez eserleri. Şimdi, Almanya Rusya dan, Türkiye ise hem Almanya dan hem de Rusya dan topraklarından koparılmış eserlerin iadesini istiyor. Pergamon Müzesi ni dolduran eserler de sürgündeki günlerinin bitmesini bekliyor. Kim bilir, belki bir gün onlar da Boğazköy Sfenksi gibi koparıldıkları topraklara geri dönerler.

17 The Pergamon Museum in Berlin is number one museum in the world which Turks love to visit; however with mixed feelings, rather with bittersweet emotions. As soon as you cross the threshold of the entrance to the museum, you find yourself in the familiar atmosphere of a typical Aegean historical site. The magnificent Zeus Altar, of which only the foundations are left behind at its original site at present-day Bergama (ancient Pergamum or Pergamon), bedazzles your eyes in all its splendour at the Pergamon Museum as you enter the main hall. In your soul, the feeling of joy and satisfaction at the completion, in front of your eyes, of an image which remained incomplete until that moment, conflicts with the sorrow of 130 years of longing. Subsequently, you see the entranceway to the Athena Temple, the Athena statue, the Market Gate of Miletus, and further most valuable objects and structures re-assembled and erected in original size, but standing there looking sad away from home... Without the persistent interest of German archaeologists for the Anatolian civilizations, their excavations at historical sites in Turkey and the generosity of Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamit II, this museum would never have come to exist. You understand that everyone visiting the museum realizes that fact, especially when a well-intentioned museum s official welcomes you by saying, You are here on home ground, feel yourself at home. Indeed, the Pergamon Museum s inventory is composed of artefacts stemming from Manisa (Magnesia), Didim (Didyma), Priene, Boğazköy (Hattusha) and other historical sites of our geography. From Bergama to Pergamon The initial story of the museum s establishment starts actually in Bergama. While supervising the building of roads in the Aydın area in the years , the German civil engineer Carl Humann who was also interested in archaeology comes across a few fragments of friezes around the hills of Bergama and decides to undertake some exploratory digging. The unearthed articles draw the attention of Alexander Conze, the director of antique sculpture at the Berlin Museum. Carl Humann is pursuing his excavations between the years thanks to the backing and financial support he is receiving from Berlin and uncovers eventually components of the frieze, relief panels and sculptures of the famous Zeus Altar. He is allowed, by special permit of Sultan Abdülhamit II to bring to Berlin the fragments of the Altar. He proceeds by carefully disassembling and drawing up an itemized and numbered list of the discovered pieces which he sends to Berlin at successive intervals in separate shipments until the year Mules and camels are used to carry the various pieces downhill from the acropolis, ox carriages to bring them from there to the port of Çandarlı (ancient Pitane) from where they are transported on small ships to the port İzmir (ancient Smyrna) to be loaded there onto larger vessels, German Navy ships, taking them to the North Sea. And finally, they are transported via railroad from North Sea ports to Berlin. The journey which lasts nearly ten years ends up in Berlin s Altes (Old) Museum. However the magnificent Zeus Altar cannot be adequately displayed at the overfilled Altes Museum. It is decided to erect a new purpose-built museum for the Altar. However, the installation of the Zeus Altar at the current Pergamon Museum building takes until 1930, due to different plans, phases and delays in the construction. From Pergamon to Russia... When the Pergamon Museum is severely damaged during the bombings of Berlin which take place towards the end of World War II, it becomes necessary to find solutions to protect the art treasures. Pieces of the altar are stored in an air-raid shelter, walls are erected around some big monumental objects difficult 15

But none of these measures are adequate to preserve these antique treasures uprooted from their lands of origin. When the Russian Red Army occupies East Berlin in 1945, the exodus resumes. The ancient works of art are taken to the Soviet Union as war trophies or supposedly to be protected from looting. They are stored in the depot of the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad (currently St. Petersburg) until In 1959 a large part of the collection is returned to East Germany (GDR), friend and ally of the Soviet Union, including the altar fragments. Many other antiquities remain in Russia, at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow as well as at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. Following the re-unification of Germany in 1990, the Pergamon Museum which remained within the borders of East-Berlin for many decades, becomes an important centre of attraction for the visitors from the West. To summarize, priceless antique treasures were taken away from Ottomans by Germans and by Russians from Germans. Germany is demanding their restitution from Russia, and Turkey demands their return to their homeland Anatolia, from both, Germany and Russia. The treasures at the Pergamon Museum hope that their days of exile will eventually come to an end. Who knows, maybe they will also have a chance to return home one day like the Boğazköy Sphinx... 16

19 BİR ZAFER ANITIDIR ZEUS SUNAĞI Bir zamanlar Antik Bergama nın akropolünde bulunan Helenistik dönemin en görkemli sunağı, Pergamon Kralı II. Eumenes in, Seleukos Kralı III. Antiochos a ve Galatlara karşı kazandığı zaferi ölümsüzleştirmek için yapılmış. Sunak, baş tanrı Zeus ile onun savaş ve akıl tanrıçası sevgili kızı Athena ya adanmış. Mermerden inşa edilen bu muhteşem sunak, beş basamaklı kaide üzerine iki katlı olarak kurulmuş. U şeklindeki podyumunu saran frizlerde Olympos tanrıları ile dev Gigantlar ın mücadelesi kabartma heykellerle tasvir edilmiş. Kabartmalar, mitolojideki tanrıların resmi geçidi gibidir. Yıldırımlar yağdıran Zeus un yanında hayvan ve avcıların tanrısı Artemis i, denizler tanrısı Poseidon u, devlerle çarpışmayı göze alan güzellik ve aşk tanrıçası Afrodit i ve Leta yı, Apollon u, Dione, Otos, Alkyoneus, Porphyrion u görebilirsiniz. 1.20m uzunluğunda, 1.20 metre yüksekliğindeki kabartmalarda tanrılar ve devler mitolojik özelliklerini birebir yansıtırlar. Sakallı, yılan bacaklı ya da kanatlı, ellerinde taş ve sopalar bulunan, son derece vahşi ve saldırgan devlerle; okları, yayları, baltaları, aslan, kaplan ve köpekleriyle tanrılar kıyasıya savaşırlar. Kazanan tanrılar Bergamalılar ı, kaybeden devler ise Galatlar ı simgeler. Kabartmalarda devlerin tanrıların gücü altında ezildikleri, gövdelerinin paramparça edilip, korkunç acılar içinde kıvrandıkları an canlandırılır. Tek bir sanatçı tarafından değil, pek çok Bergamalı ünlü heykeltraş tarafından yapılmış olduğu halde kabartmalar birbiriyle müthiş bir uyum içindedir. Bu frizler Helen heykeltraşlığının bir dönemine damgasını vuran Bergama ekolünü ve onun heykellere getirdiği duygu yoğunluğu içeren üslubunun baş yapıtı olarak kabul edilir. Sunağın iç duvarlarında ise eski klasik üsluba daha yatkın bir friz yer alır. Bu kabartmalarda Bergama nın kurucu kahramanı olarak kabul edilen Telephos un hayatı anlatılır. THE ZEUS ALTAR IS A MONUMENT OF VICTORY The Zeus Altar, the most magnificent monumental construction of the Hellenistic period, was built during the reign of King Eumenes II in the first half of the 2 nd century BC on one of the terraces of the acropolis of the ancient city of Pergamon, to immortalize Pergamon s triumphs over the Celtic Galatians and the Seleucid King Antiochos III. The Altar was dedicated to Zeus, the King of gods and his war and wisdom goddess, his daughter Athena. The marble structure is erected on a five-stepped base-plate and consists of two levels. The frieze in high relief surrounding the U shaped podium depicts the battle between the Giants and the Olympian gods known as the Gigantomachy. The reliefs are like a parade of the gods of mythology: Zeus with his thunderbolts, Artemis with her hunter arrows, Poseidon, god of the seas, goddess of beauty and love Aphrodite challenging the giants, and Leto, Apollo, Dione, Orthos, Alkyoneus, Porphyrion. The 1.20 meters high reliefs reflect the opposite characteristics of gods and giants. The bearded, snake legged or winged, wild and aggressive giants fighting with rocks and primitive rods in their hands, as opposed to gods combating the giants with their bows and arrows, their axes, lions, tigers and dogs. The victorious gods symbolize the people of Pergamon, the losing giants represent the Galatians. The giants are crushed by the powerful gods, their bodies torn apart, agonizing in terrible pain. Though created by a number of different famous sculptors from Pergamon, the coherence of the whole frieze, the harmonious artistic unity of the reliefs and their consistency down to the level of details are remarkable. The frieze is considered the masterpiece of the Pergamene school of sculpture marked by emotional and dramatic intensity and characterizing a particular period of the Hellenistic art of sculpture. There is a second, smaller and less well preserved high relief frieze of a more traditional style on the inner court walls which surround the actual fire altar on the upper level of the structure at the top of the stairs. It depicts, in a series of consecutive scenes, events from the life of Telephos, legendary founder of the city of Pergamon and son of the hero Heracles and Auge, a daughter of the Tegean king Aleus. 17
