2 1) BAĞLAM/CONTEXT MEKAN VE ZAMAN / SPACE AND TIME In this module, you will explore a short history The remains (statues and temples) of the Kingdom about Mount Nemrut (Nemrut Dağı), located on of Commagene tell us a lot about the time period the border of Adıyaman, a city in southeast when the Kingdom was in power, its cultural Turkey. You will learn about the temples and characteristics, and how it was a bridge between statues of the Kingdom of Commagene (BC 163- Hellenistic cultures and Persian cultures. AD 72) that are located on the mountain, which is listed among UNESCO's World Heritage sites. 2) TEMATİK PROJE / THEMATIC PROJECT One project is suggested for this module. Project 1: Tarihi bir Mekana Dair Sunum Yapınız / Present a Historical Site This project consists of an interview with a tourist guide about Mount Nemrut. The guide gives a short history of the mount, the statues and the temples there, along with a short historical account of the Kingdom of Commagene, and explains what makes Mount Nemrut an important historical site. As a warm- up, it is suggested that you talk about historical sites in general and those in Turkey in particular (if you know any). This will give you a chance to review essential vocabulary that you will need to watch the video (see the key words in Appendix). Afterwards, you are asked to watch the video: first listen for specific information, then watch it again to get general ideas and study themes (see the guidelines). You are asked to develop a presentation about a famous historical site in Turkey (see the internet links to help you). 2

Search various sites for information on the topic. - makta (imperfective and present) - miş (narrative past). Take note while listening. Write a report about the presentation (explaining why a particular site was chosen, how it was analyzed, and how it was presented). EXCHANGE AND ACT Pre- viewing activity: warm- up talk on historical sites around the world and in Turkey. Discuss the content of the video. Present a historical site. ACTION: Present a historical site. THEME: Mount Nemrut and historical sites. Interview of a tour guide. OPERATIONS: Take notes; use - makta and - miş in oral and written context. ÖNERİLER/ GUIDELINES A. Pre- viewing the video (see Pre- oral activity sheet, part 9, to help you remember some forms to talk about the topic) 1. Before you start watching the video, discuss some of the historical sites around the world (search the internet and other available sources). 2. Find out what makes them historical, precious, and therefore worth protecting. 3. Elicit and jot down some of the vocabulary that you can use to talk about historical sites (for example, tarihi, tapınak, heykel vb.) 4. Look for some historical sites in Turkey and find out why they were built and what makes them special. 5. Finally, talk about Nemrut Dağı: What do you know or what have you heard about it? First of all, study the key words that give clues about the theme of the video (see Appendix for the transcription with key words and vocabulary) 2. After that, start watching the video. During the first viewing, watch and listen for some specific information, such as the mount's altitude or numbers, dates, and names that are mentioned, and find out what these refer to in the text. 3. During the second viewing, watch and listen for general themes discussed in the talk. Find out what the speaker says about Nemrut, its history, and its significance as a historical site. C. After viewing 1. After viewing the video preferably two times, read the transcriptions of the video for new grammatical structures (or familiar ones), vocabulary, and other unfamiliar expressions. 2. Then, brainstorm some ideas about how to present such a historical site to visitors (the content and medium of the presentation) 3. Next, choose a historical site from Turkey as a project to present in your classroom. 4. In the presentation, talk about why you chose the site and what makes it unique. 5. Give a historical description of the site. 6. Finally, write a report about your presentation. The following comparative and superlative forms will help you talk about the famous historical sites you know. 6

7 Comparative: Remember that the adverb daha is used with an adjective or an adverb to make comparative forms. See the following examples: a) Madison birçok kentten daha güvenli. (Madison is more secure than most of the cities) b) Nemrut Dağı'ndaki heykeller düşündüğünüzden daha eski. (The statues on Mount Nemrut are older than you think.) c) Bu ev eski evimizden daha konforlu. (This house is more comfortable than our previous house). You can also use some degree adverbs such as çok (much), and biraz (a little) with daha. d) Bu şehir eskiden çok daha güzeldi. (This city was much more beautiful in the past [than it is now]). e) Biraz daha iyi gördüm sizi. (I see you getting better). f) Bu müze gördüğüm birçok müzeden çok daha zengin. (This museum is far richer than most of the museums I have seen [so far]). Less is expressed with daha az in Turkish. g) Kızınız oğlunuza kıyasla daha az konuşkan. (Your daughter is less talkative than your son). Superlative: In Turkish, the adverbial en (most) is used with adjectives and adverbs to form superlative sentences. See the following examples: h) Dünyadaki en eski uygarlıklardan bazıları Mezopotamya da yaşamıştır. (Some of the oldest civilizations in the world dwelled in Mesopotamia). i) Mardin Türkiye nin en tarihi kentlerinden bir tanesidir. (Mardin is one of the most historical cities in Turkey). j) Dünyanın en büyük piramidi hangi ülkededir? (Which country has the biggest pyramid in the world?) k) Bu şehirde yaşamanın en iyi tarafı diğer şehirler kadar boğucu bir trafiğinin olmamasıdır. (The best thing about living in this city is that there is not as much unbearable traffic as in the other cities.) l) Bir zamanlar en sevdiğim şair William Blake ti. (In the past, the poet I liked the most was William Blake). In Turkish, the postposition kadar (as as) is used to express the same quality or quantity of compared objects/persons etc. o) Türkiye deki tarihi eserler gelişmiş ülkelerdekiler kadar korunamıyor. (Historical artefacts in Turkey are not as much protected as those in developed countries.) p) İstanbul New York kadar karmaşık. (Istanbul is as complex as New York.) 7
