Corner 42 ESK Inset 43 Roald Dahl Characters From Our Students A Much-Missed Colleague Paul Allen joined ESK in September 2009 as a teacher of Science and Geography. Paul also played a large part in starting up the secondary school and together with George Ward formed the administrative team in the first year of the Secondary school. Paul became a familiar figure around the school, famed for his bright, colourful and sometimes informative ties. Paul was a friendly figure to students who followed the rules, and someone to beware of for those who did not. Paul Allen was a natural teacher with an acute and dry sense of humour. Paul s worksheets were something to behold, and tested the spell checker to the extreme. Paul came from an era where political correctness was simply voting for the correct party, but he got the message across and students learned with a sense of enjoyment. Paul was an excellent photographer, a hobby which he shared with the school, giving up his time freely to photograph all school events, he used them to inform and entertain the students in assembly. Who can forget his famous SOX assembly? Paul leaves us all sadder but wiser. 2 Page 2 Hello to all of the students, parents, and staff of The English School of Kyrenia, I m keen to meet you as I start my work as ESK Principal. Given the size and success of this exceptional school I m clearly outnumbered by you all, so it might take some time. As had been mentioned in the letter of introduction from Mrs Bilge Nevzat, I have been involved with ESK for quite some time, perhaps over six years in planning and establishing our programmes of choice. The dream that has become ESK was so attractive then and even more attractive now in reality. I have been impressed with our expert good hearted staff, our talented students, supportive families and wonderful facilities. I have also been struck by the warmth that I feel within this school s community. As my wife Susan and I get to know you, we want to keep in regular contact and let you know about the wonderful things we witness via a weekly blog message. This will enable us to share what we are all working on in our efforts to inspire, develop and prepare our ESK students for their bright futures. It was a pleasure to be introduced to the students during secondary school assembly this week and to start giving pieces of advice, with Mrs Williamson leading, as we optimise university or college placement for those in Year 13. I m keen to be able to add my experiences to her well-developed programme of advice and placement. One of my life-long pleasures over 37 years has been being able to take part in such processes. This week I also had the pleasure of witnessing the Egyptians musical play performed by Year 4, and have accompanied some lovely Year 2 children to the Dick Whittington pantomime at the Girne Theatre. Everything I have witnessed so far reinforces for me what an exceptional school has been created and I m excited to contribute all that I can for our future. Best wishes, Hector MacDonald Principal

3 Page 3 The English School of Kyrenia nın tüm öğrencilerine, velilerine ve personeline merhaba, ESK Okul Müdürü olarak çalışmalarıma başlarken hepinizle tanışmaya can atıyorum. Bu müstesna okulun büyüklüğü ve başarıları gözönüne alınınca, hepiniz karşısında şüphesiz azınlığa düşüyorum, o nedenle de bunun biraz zaman alacağını söyleyebiliriz. Sevgili Bilge Nevzat ın daha önce kaleme almış olduğu tanıştırma mektubunda da bahsettiği gibi, ESK ile tanışıklığım yeni değildir; hatta altı yıl öncesinde okulun ilk aşamalarının planlanma sürecinde de yanlarında yer aldım. ESK olarak şekil bulan o hayal, o zamanlar çok gözalıcı görünmekteydi, ancak bugün gerçekleşmiş olarak çok daha gözalıcı görünmektedir. Uzman, iyi kalpli personelimiz, yetenekli öğrencilerimiz, destekleyici aileler ve okulun harika olanakları karşısında hayranlık duydum. Bu okulu oluşturan bireyler arasında hissettiğim samimiyet ve sıcaklığın da beni çok etkilediğini söylemeliyim. Eşim Susan ile birlikte sizleri daha yakından tanıma olanağı bulurken, haftalık bir blog mesajı aracılığı ile hem düzenli bir iletişim sağlamak, hem de şahit olduğumuz harika şeyleri sizlerle paylaşabilmek istiyoruz. Bu bize, ESK öğrencilerimizi parlak geleceklerine yönelik esinleme, geliştirme ve hazırlama çabamız ekseninde yürüttüğümüz çalışmaları sizlerle paylaşma olanağı verecektir. Ortaokul-Lise Bölümü nde bu hafta gerçekleşen genel toplantı sırasında sizlere tanıştırılmaktan ve Mrs Williamson ın liderliğinde yürütülen, 13. Sınıf öğrencilerimizin üniversite ve kolejlerde en uygun şekilde yer bulmalarına yönelik tavsiyeler vermeye başlamaktan büyük bir memnuniyet duydum. Kendi deneyimlerimi, böylesine iyi geliştirilmiş bir danışmanlık ve yerleştirme programına eklemekten mutluyum. 37 yılı aşkın tecrübem çerçevesinde, bana en çok mutluluk veren şeylerden biri bu tür süreçlere katkı koyabilmek olmuştur. Bu hafta içerisinde 4. Sınıflar tarafından sahnelenen Eski Mısırlılar gösterisini izleme zevkine erişmenin yanında, bazı 2. Sınıf çocuklarına Girne de gerçekleşen Dick Whittington adlı pandomim sırasında eşlik etme olanağı yakaladım. Şu ana kadar şahit olduğum her şey müstesna bir okulun yaratıldığı inancını bende güçlendirirken, ortak geleceğimize elimden gelen her türlü katkıyı koyacağım için heyecanlıyım. 4 Page 4 Another Outstanding set of IGCSE results at ESK! The English School of Kyrenia is delighted to announce that our IGCSE students have received their results over the last few days. With some students taking up to 9 or even 10 IGCSEs, the overall results awarded have been excellent with over 79% of grades achieved at A* - C, a 4% improvement on last year s results. Notably, in 10 subjects, the standard of attainment was 100% at A* - C. We congratulate our students and teachers on their success and for all of their hard work and determination to achieve these high standards. These results are sure to provide an excellent foundation for our students as they embark upon the prestigious IB Diploma Programme in September. Among some of the outstanding achievers this year are Gizem Ahmetraşit who achieved 4 A*s and 4 As in addition to her two A*s last year. This haul included an A in Additional Maths. Derin Eralp achieved 5 A*s, 1 A and 1 B to add to her A* last year. Well done also to Bato Dambiev, Khanda Badmaeva and Olga Yashcenko who each achieved IGCSEs in three different languages in one sitting, indeed Bato & Khanda had little English and no Turkish when they joined ESK at the start of Year 10. It is particularly encouraging to note that ESK s top grade IGCSE results have improved by a further 4% in a year when the global average has seen a drop in the number of students achieving these top grades. Also the breadth of IGCSE subjects achieved by ESK students means that they now have increased career choices and opportunities for their futures. Students achieving these outstanding grades show that hard work is rewarded and we trust that they will attend the world s leading Universities after they complete their IB Diploma. 79% of ESK student entries were graded A*-C 34% of ESK student entries were graded A* or A, more than 50% higher than the UK average for GCSE ESK students achieved 100% A*-C passes in 10 subjects

5 Page 5 IGCSE imtihanlarında English School of Kyrenia nın yeni bir başarısı daha The English School of Kyrenia öğrencilerimiz son günlerde IGCSE imtihanlarının neticelerini almışlardır. Dokuz on dersten imtihana giren öğrencilerimiz dahil, tüm örencilerimizin % 79 u A* - C arası not almışlardır ve geçen yılki başarı oranlarını % 4 yükseltmişlerdir. Özellikle 10 dersten imtihana giren öğrencilerimizin tümü de A* - C arası not almışlardır. Başarılarından, yoğun çalışmalarından ve yüksek not almak için gösterdikleri azimden dolayı tüm öğrencilerimizi ve öğretmenlerimizi içtenlikle kutluyoruz. Eylül ayında IB Diplaması Programına başlayacak olan öğrencilerimiz için bu neticeler sağlam bir temel oluşturacaktır. En başarılı öğrencilerimizden biri olan Gizem Ahmetraşit, geçen yıl 2 dersten aldığı A* ya ilaveten bu yıl da 4 dersten A* ve 4 dersten de A almıştır, ve A aldığı derslerden biri de Additional Maths tır. 6 Page 6 What s Your Excuse? 9 October, 2013 ESK was recently honoured to host a motivational guest speaker Mr Alper Ali, former GB Paralympic athlete and medallist, who had a secondary school assembly titled What s Your Excuse? The aim of the Assembly was to inspire students to appreciate the fact that no matter what life throws at you, it is only you that can make a choice whether to challenge yourself and succeed. Success doesn t actually mean you have to be clever, it s how determined you are that counts. Mr Ali was diagnosed with Polio at a young age and overcame many obstacles. He won a bronze medal for GB in the Paralympics and competed in 3 Olympics. He has a huge range of successes including swimming the channel and he even met the Queen and the late Princess Diana. Alper Ali was interviewed during the assembly by Year 10 students Kaan & Molly. Mr Ali even demonstrated a lift by placing Kaan on a chair, laying on the stage and lifting him gaining a huge applause from the audience. Alper brought along his collection of medals, including the Bronze from the Olympics for the students to see. Senin Mazaretin Ne? 9 Ekim, 2013 ESK yakın zamanda eski Britanya Paralimpik atlet ve madalya sahibi Alper Ali nin Ortaokul-Lise bölümünde Senin Mazaretin Ne? adlı ilham verici bir sunum yapmasına evsahipliği yaptı. Sunumun amacı, öğrencilere hayatın bize sundukları karşısında, sadece ve sadece bizim mücadele edip etmeme kararı alabileceğimiz gerçeğini takdir ederek ilham vermekti. Başarılı olmanın aslında ne kadar zeki olduğunuzla ilgili değil, ne kadar kararlı olduğunuzla ilgili olduğunu göstermekti. Alper Ali ye çok küçük yaşta çocuk felci teşhisi konmuş ve yaşamında pek çok engeli aşmak zorunda kalmıştır. Paralimpiklerde Britanya adına bronz madalya kazanan Mr Ali, 3 Olimpiyatta mücadele etmiştir. İngiliz kanalını yüzmek yanında pek çok büyük başarıya imza atan Mr Ali, Britanya kraliçesi ve ölen Prenses Diana ile de tanışma olanağı bulmuştur. 10. Sınıf öğrencileri Kaan ve Molly tarafından söyleşi yapılan Alper Ali, daha sonra öğrencilere bir gösteri de yaptı. Sırtüstü sahneye uzanan Mr Ali nin, sandalyede oturan Kaan ı kaldırması izleyenler arasında büyük bir alkışın kopmasına neden oldu. Mr Ali, Olimpiyatlarda kazandığı bronz madalya dahil, madalya koleksiyonunu okula getirerek öğrencilerin görmesine olanak tanıdı.

7 Page 7 First Hatching in Our New FESK Incubator has begun! 31 October 2013 We are happy to announce that the first hatching in our new FESK incubator has begun. A group of children from Years 2 to 6 carefully placed the eggs in the incubator and Mrs Green explained to them about how the incubator works and what we can expect when the eggs hatch. We are hoping to see the first of our little chicks peck their way out of the eggs around 21 st November. A big thank you to Cemal in Year 10 who has given us lots of advice and also provided us with our eggs. Yeni FESK Kuluçka Makinemizde İlk Kuluçkamıza start verildi! 31 Ekim 2013 Yeni FESK kuluçka makinemizdeki ilk kuluçkamızı başlatmış olduğumuzu müjdelemek isteriz Sınıflarından seçilmiş bir öğrenci grubu çok dikkatli bir şekilde yumurtaları kuluçka makinesine yerleştirirken, Mrs Green onlara kuluçka makinesinin nasıl çalıştığını ve civcivlerin yumurtadan ne zaman çıkmalarının beklenildiğini anlattı. İlk minik civcivlerimizin 21 Kasım tarihi dolaylarında yumurtalarını gagalayarak dışarıya çıktıklarını görmeyi umut ediyoruz. 10. Sınıf öğrencilerimizden Cemal e bu konudaki tavsiyeleri ve bizlere vermiş olduğu yumurtalar için çok teşekkür ederiz.

8 Page 8 Dear Children of ESK What an exciting day. Our first chicks have hatched. As I write there are 3 chicks already hatched and I can see one trying to get out of its shell!. You now understand the life cycle of a hen. This is part of your science curriculum. It took 21 days for the eggs to hatch. They had to be kept warm and needed moisture (water) in the air to stop them from drying out. That is why we put them in an incubator which was designed especially to make sure the eggs had warmth and humidity. In the wild, the mother hen would keep the eggs warm and the natural moisture from her body would stop the eggs from drying out. The chicks need to stay in their little cage for 2 days. They do not need any food or water yet. On Friday afternoon some children will help me to transfer the chicks that have hatched into the holding pen underneath. This has a light in it and also it is heated to keep the chicks nice and warm. In there they will have food and water and a bit more space to move around. Next week when they are bit stronger we will put them in a little pen where they can run around and play. We will need to put a lamp there so that they can still keep warm. It is unlikely that all the eggs will hatch out. Some eggs just do not turn into chicks. We put 24 eggs in the incubator so it will be interesting to calculate our success rate when the hatching is finished. At the end of term, we will take the chicks to Balci Plaza in the Karpaz where Hasan is waiting for them. I will be looking for 3 children to come with me to the Karpaz and take the chicks to their new home. What a special day! Mrs Green Primary Head 20 November, 2013

9 Page 9 ESK nın Sevgili Çocukları Ne kadar heyecanlı bir gün. İlk civcivlerimiz yumurtalarından çıktılar. Bu mektubu sizlere yazdığım sıralarda 3 civcivin halıhazırda yumurtalarından çıktığını, bir tanesinin ise kabuğunu kırmaya çalıştığını görüyorum! Artık bir tavuğun yaşam döngüsünü daha iyi anlıyorsunuz. Bu sizin hayat bilgisi/fen dersi müfredatınızın bir bölümü. Civcivlerin yumurtalarından çıkmaları 21 gün aldı. Yumurtaların kurumalarını önlemek için ortamlarının sıcak ve etraflarındaki havanın nemli tutulması gerekti. O yüzden yumurtaları, onlara ihtiyaç duydukları ısı ve nemli sağlayacak şekilde tasarlanmış kuluçka makinesine koyduk. Doğada yumurtaları sıcak tutan ve vücudundaki doğal nem sayesinde kurumaktan koruyan anne tavuktur. Civcivlerin 2 gün boyunca küçük kafeslerinde kalmaları gerekmektedir. Bu süre içerisinde yem ve suya ihtiyaç duymayacaklardır. Cuma günü bazı çocukların yardımı ile yumurtadan çıkmış civcivleri kuluçka makinesinin altında bulunan kümes bölmesine aktaracağız. Burası hem ışıklı, hem de civcivleri sıcak tutmak için ısıtılmaktadır. Ayrıca içerisinde yem ile su, ve daha rahat dolaşmaları için genişçe bir alan bulunmaktadır. Gelecek hafta, biraz güçlendikleri zaman rahatça dolaşıp oynayabilecekleri bir kümese koyacağız. İçerisine de sıcak kalabilmeleri için bir ışık yerleştirmemiz gerekmektedir. Yumurtaların tümünden civciv çıkması çok olası değildir. Bazı yumurtalar civcive dönüşmez. Bizler kuluçka makinesine 24 yumurta koymuştuk, yumurtalamalar sona erdiğinde kaçta kaçının başarılı sonuçlandığını hesaplamak ilginç olacaktır. Dönem sonunda civcivleri, onları Karpaz daki Balcı Plaza da bekleyen Hasan a götüreceğiz. 10 Page 10 Poland and Germany 2013 By Edward Smith, Secondary History, Global Perspectives This term, fourteen students from Years 11 and 12 took part in an international History trip to Germany and Poland. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to experience and learn first-hand about the horrors of the Holocaust. We had a packed itinerary. Day 1: We travelled from sunny Cyprus to the cold of Warsaw for a city tour taking in the eerie Chopin memorial, the grand Warsaw parliament, the tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Warsaw old town. It was incredible to see how the old town was raised from the ashes of the ruins of the Second World War and recreated to match what stood before. Despite the fact that 95% of Warsaw was flattened by the Nazis there still remain odd reminders of its pre-war finery, the old still standing proud next to the new. After our tour we went for food in a traditional Polish restaurant where we were fed incredibly well (we won t mention the four individuals who found themselves lured elsewhere by the golden arches). A final hour of freedom in the shopping mall resulted in all students very ready for bed. Day 2: Day 2 saw us off to the Warsaw science museum for educational but amusing times. Between the tornado of fire and the Van der Graf generator a great time was had by all, before we went to the university for lunch. After more shopping, we then boarded the train (just) for Krakow. Krakow is a beautiful city, such a contrast to Warsaw, here it is certainly tourism central and while it was an early night for some, the braver souls followed Mr Smith on a night walk of the old town, taking in the Cloth Hall, the cathedral and the incredible towering castle along the way.

11 Academic Year 2013/14 Page 11 Day 3: Sometimes one day can seem like a lifetime. What a range of experiences we had this day, and I am sure in many ways we have learnt and felt more than we could have ever expected. In the morning we explored the salt mines down nearly four hundred steps, one hundred meters underground to a world more at home in the Lord of the Rings than real life. Unbelievable, but here over a hundred meters down were chapels and churches hewn from solid rock and even a five aside football pitch panelled in polished wood. Experience followed experience as we saw the underground canals, the basket cave held up by thousands of trees and the ball room full of beautiful stone carvings, licked the same salty wall as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and turned the spindle to hoist water out of the mine, before we took the fastest lift in Poland back to the surface and lunch. Our afternoon can never be properly quantified; everyone was locked in their own personal attempts to understand what took place in the camp of Auschwitz. We were guided sensitively and efficiently through Auschwitz 1 with its grim welcome of Arbite Macht Frei the lie that work brings freedom and we saw the remains of the Nazi Holocaust displayed in the many barrack houses that were once home to the hundreds of thousands who died there in unimaginable circumstances. We then went to Auschwitz-Birkenau where we were lost in the scale of this huge extermination camp, the results of humanity at its worst stretching in every direction as far as the eye could see. Every student will have their own memories of today, ones that will last a lifetime, and ones which will hopefully help us appreciate all that we have to be grateful for. In addition we were amazed at the photos of many rulers and politicians from many countries visiting Sachsenhausen, to marvel at this new Nazi initiative, did they truly understand what they were seeing? We were glad to leave this place and return to the comfort of our hotel, again reminded that we must be grateful for that which we have, which we so often take for granted. Later, we sat down to eat together for our final meal of the trip, well looked after by our Turkish waitress.

12 Academic Year 2013/14 Page 12 Day 4: The pace of the trip continued. An early 5am start and we were off to Germany. From Berlin station it was straight on the tour bus and off to Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Again we were overwhelmed by the size and preparations of the Nazis in their development of this camp. The history here was haunting, much medical experimentation on the victims and experiments of unthinkable sadism, but here it was, again the undeniable evidence of humanities worst capabilities. In the bitter cold we froze through our layers of warm clothes and thick jackets, no one could imagine the hardships that the inmates would suffer in their thin prison clothing. Day 5: An early start saw us head for an exploration of the Berlin Wall and the East Side Gallery. Students and staff were amazed at the scale and intention of the wall and we were fascinated by the political art work which decorates it now. It was a fitting end for an amazing trip, fantastically organised by Miss Özuyanık, educational but exhausting both physically and emotionally. What the students and staff saw and experienced, they may never be able to fully comprehend, but this was truly an experience which will last a lifetime.

13 Page 13 Polonya ve Almanya 2013 Yazan Edward Smith, Secondary History, Global Perspectives Bu dönem, 11 ve 12. Sınıflardan 14 öğrenci Almanya ve Polonya ya yapılan uluslararası bir Tarih gezisine katıldılar. Bu öğrenciler için, Musevi Katliamını ilk elden öğrenmek ve deneyimlemek adına inanılmaz bir olanaktı. Gezi programımız oldukça yoğundu. 1. Gün: Güneşli Kıbrıs tan soğuk Varşova ya yolculuğumuz ürkütücü Chopin Abidesi, büyük Varşova parlementosu, Adsız Asker e ait mezar ve eski Varşova şehir turu ile başladı. II. Dünya Savaşı nda yıkılan eski şehrin nasıl küllerinden doğarak eski haline yakın olarak yeniden yaratıldığını görmek inanılmazdı. Varşova nın % 95 inin Naziler tarafından yerle bir edilmiş olması gerçeğine rağmen, savaş öncesi eski ihtişamından tek tük kalıntıların yeninin yanında gururla yer aldığını gördük. Turumuzun ardından yemek için, harika yemekler yediğimiz bir geleneksel Polonya restorantına gittik (bu arada altın kemerler tarafından cezbedilerek kendilerini başka tarafta bulan dört kişiden bahsetmeyeceğiz). Alışveriş merkezinde geçirdikleri son bir saatlik özgürlük tüm öğrencileri uykuya hazırlamaya yetti. 2. Gün: İkinci günümüz hem eğitimsel hem de eğlenceli vakit geçirdiğimiz Varşova bilim müzesine gitmekle başladı. Ateş kasırgasından, Van der Graf generatörüne kadar geçen sürede çok ilginç şeyler gördük; sonra yemek yemek üzere üniversiteye gittik. Biraz daha alışverişten sonra, bizi Karkov a götürecek trene (ucu ucuna) yetiştik. Krakov gözalıcı bir şehir, Varşova nın aksine, kesinlikle bir turizm merkezi. Bazıları erkenden yatmayı seçmiş olsa da, daha cesur olanlar eski şehrin keşfi için, Mr Smith in peşine takılarak onları yol boyunca Cloth Binası na, katedrale ve yüksekteki olağanüstü şatoya götüren gece yürüyüşüne çıktılar.

Farklı deneyimler yaşadık bugün; ve eminim ki pek çok açıdan tahmin ettiğimizden çok daha fazlasını öğrendik ve hissettik. Sabah tuz madenlerini keşfe çıktık neredeyse dört yüz basamak aşağıya, yeraltının yüz metre altına, gerçek yaşamın değil de ancak Yüzüklerin Efendisine evsahipliği edebilecek bir dünyaya. Inanılmaz gibi geliyor ama, yüz metreyi aşkın bir derinlikte sert kayadan yontulmuş mabetler ve kiliseler; hatta cilalanmış ahşap ile kaplanmış 5 kenarlı bir futbol sahası. Deneyim deneyimi takip etti ve yeraltı kanallarını, binlerce ağaç tarafından yukarıda tutulan sepet mağarasını ve muhteşem taş oymalarla bezeli balo salonunu gördük; öğle yemeği için bizi yüzeye çıkaracak Polonya daki en hızlı asansöre binmeden önce Brad Pitt ve Angelina Jolie nin de yalamış olduğu aynı tuzlu duvarı yaladık ve madenden su çekmek için aksı çevirdik. Öğleden sonra yaşadıklarımızı tam olarak anlatmak mümkün değildir; herkes Auschwitz kampında yaşananları anlamlandırabilmek adına kendi kişisel çabasına kilitlendi. Bizlere Auschwitz 1 içerisinden duyarlı ve rasyonel bir şekilde rehberlik edildikten sonra zalim Arbite Macht Frei (çalışmak özgürlük getirir) yalanı tarafından karşılandık. Daha sonra Nazi Soykırımı nın hayal edilemez şartlarında hayatını kaybeden yüz binlerce kişiye ev olmuş pek çok barakaya yayılmış kalıntılarını gördük. Ardından, ölçeği karşısında kendimizi kaybettiğimiz devasa ölüm kampı Auschwitz-Birkenau ya gittik; gözün görebildiği her yöne ve ulaşabildiği en uzak mesafeye uzanan, insanoğlunun en kötü halininin sonuçları. Her öğrencinin bugüne dair kendi anıları olacaktır elbet, bu anılardan bazıları ömür boyu sürecek, bazıları ise umut ederiz ki sahip olduğumuz şeylerin değerini bilmemiz konusunda bizlere yardımcı olacak.

15 Academic Year 2013/14 Page Gün: Gezinin temposu devam ediyor. Güne sabah 5 te yaptığımız erken başlangıç ile birlikte Almanya ya yolculuk ediyoruz. Berlin istasyonundan doğruca tur otobüsüne binip Sachsenhausen toplama kampına gittik. Kampın büyüklüğü ve Nazilerin bu kampın geliştirilmesine yönelik yaptıkları hazırlıklar karşısında şaşkına döndük. Korkunç tarihi, kurbanlarına uygulanan akıl almaz sadistlikteki deneyleri ve tıbbi araştırmaları, işte hepsi burdaydı, insanoğlunun kötülük kapasitesinin inkar edilemez kanıtı. Kat kat giysilerimiz ve kalın ceketlerimizi delip geçen soğukta donarken, hiçbirimiz incecik cezaevi giysileri içerisindeki tutukluların ne gibi zorluklarla karşı karşıya kalmış olduklarını hayal edemedik. Ek olarak pek çok ülkeden lider ve politikacının, bu yeni Nazi insiyatifinden etkilenmiş olarak Sachsenhausen e yaptıkları ziyaretler sırasında çekilen fotoğraflarını görünce afalladık; gördükleri şeyleri gerçekten anlamışlar mıydı? Buradan ayrılıp hotelimizin konforuna dönmekten memnunduk; ve sahip olduğumuz ancak çoğu kez değerini bilmediklerimiz için müteşekkir olmamız gerektiğini yeniden hatırladık. Daha sonra, Türk bayan garsonumuzun bizimle çok ilgilendiği, gezimizin son yemeğini yemek üzere oturduk. 5. Gün: Güne erken bir başlangıç yaparak Berlin Duvarı nı ve Doğu Bölgesi Galerisi ni keşfe çıktık. Öğrencilerle, personel duvarın ölçeği ve anlamı karşısında hayrete düşmenin yanısıra, bugün duvarı süsleyen politik sanat çalışmalara hayran kaldılar. Bu, Miss Özuyanık tarafından fevkelade hazırlanmış, eğitimsel olduğu kadar fiziksel ve duygusal olarak yorucu olağanüstü gezimize çok uygun bir son oldu. Öğrenciler ve personel olarak görüp deneyimlediklerimizin gerçek boyutunu hiçbir zaman tümüyle kavrayamayacak olsak da, bunlar gerçekten yaşamboyu taşıyacağımız tecrübelerdi.

16 Page 16 What a busy International Library Week! 7-11 October 2013 The English School of Kyrenia Library organized a successful celebration of International Library week during the second week of October The week aims to raise the profile of the library and encourage pupils to develop their love of books and to read more. Among the week s highlights was celebrity story time for primary pupils and their parents in the library. Pupils also read with their parents and other family members, and they shared their favourite books with each other. Students also participated in competitions which ranged from contests for the best book review and best book cover design as well as designing posters to display the library rules. The competitions were aimed at encouraging students to read, write, design and illustrate. All student entries were displayed in the library and there really were some outstanding creative works on show. The panel of judges had the difficult task of awarding the winning entries from each year group. The winners were announced in assembly and received prizes. This year s primary winners were: Kutay O. 1KA Dilem O. 2F Deren O. 3E Elora K. 4R Cahit A. - 5B Also, secondary students participated in an exhibition of book cover designs and Turkish language posters under the theme of Library & Reading. This exhibition was held in the Great Hall and was open to all parents and staff to enjoy. The winning book cover designs were chosen by the judges and announced during Flag ceremony. The overall winners were also presented with their prizes. The secondary school winning entries were: Darem Kadirogullari Year 8 Aylin Ayyildiz Year 7 A huge congratulations to everyone!

17 Page 17 Yoğun bir Uluslararası Kütüphane Haftası daha! 7-11 Ekim 2013 The English School of Kyrenia Kütüphanesi Ekim ayının ikinci haftası süresince başarılı bir şekilde kutlanan bir Uluslararası Kütüphane haftası düzenledi. Bu haftanın amacı, dikkatleri kütüphane üzerine çekerken, öğrencilere kitap sevgisini aşılamak ve daha fazla kitap okumalarını sağlamaktı. Haftanın önemli olayları arasında ilkokul öğrencileri ve ailelerine yönelik kütüphanede gerçekleşen ünlü kişi masal saati idi. Ebeveynleri ve diğer aile üyeleri ile birlikte kitap okuyan öğrenciler, en sevdikleri kitapları birbirleriyle paylaşma olanağı da buldular. Öğrenciler ayrıca, en iyi kitap eleştirisi, en iyi kitap kapağı tasarımı gibi yarışmalara katılırken, kütüphane kurallarını gösteren posterler de tasarladılar. Bu yarışmalarla öğrencilerin okumaya, yazmaya, tasarlamaya ve resimlemeye teşvik edilmesi amaçlanmıştı. Öğrenci çalışmalarının tümü kütüphanede sergilendi ve sergilenenler arasında gerçekten olağanüstü yaratıcılıkta çalışmalar vardı. Seçici kurul her yaş grubunun birincilerine karar verirken çok zorlandılar. Kazananlar genel toplantıda duyrulup, ödüllerini aldılar. 19 Page 19 The ESK Library Media Centre Welcome back to our returning students and teachers. And a special welcome to our new students and staff. Please know that we are, as always, here to help you learn and be successful at ESK. I would like to highlight our most vital services to the library users. The purpose of the ESK library is to provide a wide range of books and multimedia resources to support teaching and learning throughout the key stages, and foster a reading and information culture that promotes independent motivated readers and learners for life. We aim to promote positive attitudes towards reading (including reading for pleasure), literacy and lifelong learning. Our library works in partnership with the Senior Management Team, all departments and individual teaching staff, to develop a learning environment that will support the school in raising standards of achievement. The Collection We all know how important it is that students are exposed to the widest selection of reading material in book and electronic format. The ESK Library Media Centre provides a comprehensive and wellbalanced range of materials and information sources to support the curriculum and leisure requirements of all teachers and students. The library has a collection of approximately 19,000 titles (Books & E-books). The English book collection is divided into the following sections: Fiction (Secondary Fiction, Primary Fiction, Easy Readers, and Picture Story Books), and Non-Fiction (Secondary Non-Fiction, Primary Non-Fiction, Secondary and Primary Reference). There is also a large Turkish Fiction and Non- Fiction collection. Any book donations to these collections are always welcome. The library also has a small range of DVDs & Audiobooks which can be borrowed by parents and teachers. The library subscribes to about fifteen magazines and newspapers, current issues are for use only within the library, but back issues may be borrowed for one week by all users. The library has 2 databases that can help students with their inquiries at school or at home: Questia: is the premier online library and research tool for Secondary school students. Its collection of thousands of digital titles and productivity tools supports cross-curricular studies in standard and advanced secondary school level courses Britannica Online School Edition: is a unique, online resource designed to meet the learning needs of school pupils and teachers. Library Behaviour Policy The library is shared by students and staff and all users are requested to behave responsibly and respectfully. Eating and drinking are not permitted along with unruly behaviour or any actions, which result in damage or injury. In order to maintain a pleasant and enjoyable learning environment, we also ask that users help keep the library tidy and orderly. The computers in the library are for educational use and student research. If a student wishes to use any alternative computer programmes they must request permission from the librarian. ESK News was very pleased to recieve some photographs from Claire Lamb, the press officer for CESV, with the following message: I thought you may be interested in some shots of today s events at Girne castle. Unfortunately there wasn't a harness small enough for Josh but he did learn how to abseil safely so hopefully next time he can fully join in. As a consolation prize he was bundled up on a stretcher, whilst pretending to be a casualty, and lowered to the ground over the wall of the castle! He's a brave boy and enjoyed every minute of it. 21 Page 21 World Traveller Visits Year 6 22 October, 2013 Year 6 had the wonderful opportunity of meeting David who had travelled around the world for the last two years. He shared his experiences of visiting Australia and New Zealand with the students and, his photographs inspired the children to ask many different questions, which David was more than happy to answer. The children were puzzled by the stories of Norway where its northern areas are within the Arctic Circle. The photographs showed activities at 2 a.m. in bright sunshine! Year 6 students were very disappointed when the session had finished and are hoping for a return visit. Dünya Gezgini 6. Sınıfları Ziyaret Etti 22 Ekim, Sınıf öğrencileri son iki yıldır dünyayı dolaşan David ile tanışma olanağı buldular. Öğrencilerle Avusturalya ve Yeni Zelanda yı ziyareti sırasında yaşadığı deneyimleri ve çektiği fotoğrafları paylaşan David, öğrencilerin yönelttiği çok farklı soruları yanıtlamaktan mutluluk duydu. Kuzey Kutup çemberi içerisinde bulunan kuzey bölgedeki Norveç ile ilgili duydukları karşısında öğrencilerin aklı oldukça karıştı. Çekilen fotoğraflar, saat sabah 02:00 olmasına rağmen günlük güneşlik ortamda yapılan aktiviteleri gösteriyordu! Sunumun bitmesi ile hayalkırıklığına uğrayan öğrenciler, David in onları yine ziyarete gelmesini çok istiyorlar.

22 Page 22 Year 4 Ancient Egyptian Wow Day 4 th October 2013 On Friday 4 th October children in year 4 came to school dressed in their finest Egyptian costumes. They had to complete various challenges set by the great Pharaoh! These challenges consisted of; making life size mummies, a hieroglyphic treasure hunt, excavating ancient relics as archaeologists and numerous Egyptian maths challenges. Year 4 began their day by time way back to Ancient Egyptian times it was scary! Then they had a short catwalk to display their costumes in all of their glory. They also sang a few Egyptian songs as practise for their up and coming Ancient Egyptian production. Then it was time to try to solve all of the challenges set by the pharaoh. The children took on the all challenges very well and even solved a few mysteries along the way! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day, but came to the conclusion that time travelling is tiring! 23 Page Sınıf Antik Mısırlılar Wow Günü 4 Ekim Ekim, Cuma günü 4. Sınıf öğrencileri okula en güzel Mısırlı kostümleri içerisinde geldiler. Gün boyunca Yüce Firavun un onlara verdiği görevleri tamamlamak zorunda kaldılar! Bu görevler: insan boyutunda mumyalar yapmak, hiyeroglifsel bir hazine avı, arkeologlar gibi antik kalıntılar kazıyıp ortaya çıkarmak ve başka çeşitli Mısırlı matematik çalışmalarından oluşuyordu. Günlerine Antik Mısırlılar zamanına geri dönerek başladılar çok ürkütücüydü! Sonra harika kostümlerini göstermek için küçük bir defile gerçekleştirdiler. Yaklaşmakta olan Antik Mısırlılar gösterilerine hazırlık olması açısından birkaç tane Mısır şarkısı söylediler. Sonra sıra Firavun un bizlere hazırlamış olduğu tüm görevleri çözmeye geldi. Çocuklar kendilerine verilmiş olan tüm görevleri büyük bir ciddiyetle ele aldılar, hatta bunu yaparken birkaç gizem bile çözdüler! Herkes bu günden büyük bir keyif aldı, ancak sonuç olarak zamanda yolculuk yapmanın yorucu bir iş olduğuna karar verdiler! Çocukların bu kadar harika görünmelerini sağlayan tüm ailelere teşekkürler! Bazı çocuklardan alıntılar: Wow gününde yaptığımız aktivitelerin tümünü de çok sevdim, en çok sevdiğim hazine avıydı. İpuçlarını çözmeye çalışmak çok eğlenceliydi. 27 Page 27 IB Theory of Knowledge by Kati Taherzadeh, ToK Coordinator Theory of Knowledge (ToK), together with CAS and the extended essay, is at the heart of the IB Diploma Programme. Unlike biology, maths and English, it is a new and unfamiliar course for most students and parents. What is it and is it beneficial for our students? TOK is a course in critical thinking which encourages our students to reflect on their existing and new knowledge and to scrutinise the different bases for what they know. Students are helped to recognise the influences that affect their beliefs and views. They are asked to examine their school subjects and wider world issues, and strive to find truth (itself an important concept) by considering the available evidence. For students, ToK is a challenging course they are asked to think about what they know, and how and why they know. What ToK encourages our students to do, is to question intelligently not to be too gullible in believing everything they read or hear, and not to display blanket cynicism by disbelieving and dismissing everything. In an age where many unquestioningly believe what they read and hear, ToK asks students to look at different perspectives and evidence before they claim knowledge. By encouraging students to look at knowledge from multiple perspectives, IB schools hope to foster informed, compassionate students with the ability to listen to and evaluate often conflicting views. Critical thinking is a skill that will undoubtedly serve our students well at university and in later life. Although the ToK course does not have an exam, it does have two formally assessed components. In Year 13 students must do a presentation in class and write an essay on a title from a range provided by the IB. The aim of both is to demonstrate their abilities to think critically evaluate knowledge claims from different perspectives and reach informed, supported conclusions.

On Tuesday 19 th and Wednesday 20 th November the schools Great Hall went back in time over 3,000 years. Pharaoh s, dancing mummies, pyramid workers, rapping archaeologists and beautiful belly dancers uncovered secrets from the past for a wonderful all singing, all dancing show!

Sınıf öğrencileri Eski Mısırlılar konusunu işlediler. 19 Kasım, Salı ve 20 Kasım, Çarşamba günleri okulun Büyük Salonu 3,000 yıl geriye bir yolculuk gerçekleştirdi. Firavunlar, dans eden mumyalar, piramit işçileri, rap yapan arkeologlar ve güzel dansözler şarkı ve danslarıyla geçmişe dair sırlar ortaya çıkardılar.

30 Page 30 Year 3 Healthy Eating Picnic - 11 October 2013 As part of their Healthy Eating topic in Science, Year 3 recently tried and tasted some different foods then selected some of their favourite ingredients to use in a sandwich. They managed to prepare the sandwiches all by themselves and then had the pleasure of eating them outside on a year group picnic! 3. Sınıfların Sağlıklı Beslenme Pikniği - 11 Ekim 2013 Fen Bilgisi derslerinin Sağlıklı Beslenme konusunun bir parçası olarak 3. Sınıf öğrencileri farklı yiyeceklerin tadına bakma olanağı buldular; daha sonra ise en beğendikleri malzemeleri kullanarak kendi sandviçlerini yarattılar. Sandviçlerini kendi başlarına güzelce hazırlayan öğrenciler, daha sonra bunları tüm 3. Sınıf öğrencilerinin katıldığı piknikte yeme keyfine eriştiler!

31 Page 31 Year 6 Water Divining Activity 21 October 2013 Last week the Year 6 classes had a wonderful visit by Mr. Bob who shared some interesting information about water divining. He shared some of the history of divining (also called dowsing) and explained how he finds water using divining rods or a dowsing stick. Water divining is classified by many as a non-scientific method of finding water, grave sites, oil, gold and other minerals. The children were treated to a demonstration outside the school where Mr. Bob stated that he was able to find an underground river thirty-one meters beneath the surface of the playground. He gave many children a chance to try the divining rods which seemed to give mixed results for each one of them though they all thoroughly enjoyed the chance to try a method with such history behind it. Mr. Bob has been a regular visitor at ESK and the children have grown very fond of him. We are very appreciative that he gave his time so generously to us all! 6. Sınıf Öğrencilerinin Su Arama Çalışmaları 21 Ekim 2013 Geçtiğimiz hafta 6. Sınıf öğrencileri, onlarla su arama çalışmaları hakkında çok ilginç bilgiler paylaşan Mr. Bob tarafından ziyaret edildi. Öğrencilerle su aramanın tarihçesini paylaşan Mr. Bob, daha sonra su arama çubukları veya değneği ile nasıl su bulduğunu anlattı. Çubuklarla arama pek çoğu tarafından su, gömüt alanları, petrol, altın ve başka mineraller aramada kullanılan, bilimsel olmayan bir yöntem olarak kabul ediliyor. Mr. Bob oyun alanı yüzeyinin otuz bir metre altında akan bir dere bulabileceğini belirttikten sonra çocuklara okul dışında bir uygulama yaptı. Daha sonra pek çok öğrenci çubuklarla su arama olanağı buldu; karışık sonuçlar elde etmişlerse de tüm öğrenciler arkasında bu kadar eski bir tarih barındıran bir yöntemi denemekten büyük bir keyif aldılar. Mr. Bob ESK yı düzenli olarak davet edilen bir ziyaretçimiz olup, öğrenciler tarafından çok sevilmektedir. Bize zamanını cömertçe ayırdığı için müteşekkiriz!

32 Page 32 Liverpool FC fan Mr Garbett wears Arsenal shirt! Why is Mr Garbett, an ardent and loyal Liverpool fan wearing an Arsenal shirt? Two of ESK's biggest football fans, Mr Rob Garbett (Liverpool) and Mr Irfan Nevzat (Arsenal) had a long standing gentleman's agreement between them that the next time their teams met, they would make the encounter even more intriguing. They agreed that the supporter of the losing team would wear the football shirt of the winning team. Following Arsenal's 2-0 victory over Liverpool on November 2nd, Mr Garbett honoured the agreement and reluctantly pulled on the famous Arsenal red shirt for the first (and he hopes) last ever time! 34 Page 34 Pink Day 25 th October th October was `Wear it Pink` fundraising day for women with breast cancer and Help Those With Cancer Association (TULIPS). The Helping Hands of ESK Charity Club supported this event with a nonuniform but `must have something in pink day` in the Secondary school (5TL donations). Primary school students with their interesting pink accessories joined the event and contributed with their donations. The charity club members roamed around school during break time and after lunch with their pink ribbons and stickers and collected more donations from parents and staff. Georgina from Year 10 sold key rings together with the Charity members and raised money for those with breast cancer. TULIPS members will inform the school about the total amount that was raised in near future. It was a marvellous PINK day for many of us!!!! ESK Yardımseverlik Kulübü The Helping Hands, okulun Ortaokul-Lise Bölümü nde pembe bir şey şartı ile bir serbest kıyafet günü düzenleyerek etkinliğe katkı koydu (5TL bağış karşılığında). İlkokul öğrencileri ise ilginç pembe aksesuvarları ile etkinliğe katılıp, bağışları ile katkı koydular. Yardımseverlik Kulübü üyeleri pembe kurdeleleri ve çıkartmaları ile tenefüs ve ögle yemeği sonrasında okulu dolaşarak velilerden ve personelden bağış toplamaya devam ettiler. 10. Sınıf öğrencilerinden Georgina Hayır Kurumu üyeleri ile birlikte anahtarlık satarak meme kanseri hastaları için para topladı. TULIPS üyeleri ileriki günlerde toplanan toplam bağış ile ilgili bilgi vermek üzere okulu ziyaret edeceklerdir. Bu hepimiz için harika bir PEMBE gün oldu!!!!

36 Page 36 CAS News by Desi Ahmet, ESK CAS Coordinator Back in October, Ferhat, Selin A, Selin Ö, Derin, Aigerim, Janar, Ecem, Mustafa, Toya, Behiye, Florenza, Evrensel, Yasar, Çisel, Süreyya, Ivan, Demir, Enver, Khanda, Olga and Bato supported the members of ESK Helping Hands Charity at the Olive Festival, which ran from the 1st-5th. Their marketing skills were put to good use where they made and sold cakes, pastries and sweets. 2,570TL was raised in total, which went towards the Build a School In Africa sponsorship project. Some of our sporty students are working alongside Mr Reece in the PE department as support to the younger years in Primary. Well done to Miriam and Gizem. Evrensel and Enver have been organising table tennis tournaments and have so far raised 80tl for the ESK Helping Hands Charity. Our new sports ambassadors Uraz and Evrensel will be coaching and organising more tournaments and Florenza and Derin will be working on the photography and journalism. Many year 12s and 13s took part in the Poppy Walk for Remembrance Day. This was held by the Royal British Legion on Saturday 9 th November. I am happy to say that they all managed to do the 10km walk, not the 5km! On the same day, Paige, Nia and Natalie went to sell their homemade toffee apples and chocolate coated marshmallows at the KAR bonfire night. Youngsters were also queuing up to have their faces painted by our very own face painting team, Çisel and Ayla. Mustafa and Ecem ran game stalls. Between them, they raised nearly 400TL. Çisel and Şerife have been spending time at Umut Evi, a charity- based organisation in Nicosia. Their role has been helping young cancer patients to catch up with their Maths and English if they have missed out due to having time off school. Süreyya, Çisel and Selin Örek are currently involved in helping to support a family who are seeking refuge in Nicosia. They have been working in collaboration with the ESK Helping Hands Charity Members. After receiving many bags of items from staff and students, the girls paid a visit to the house to deliver the goods. We would like to thank all that contributed and a special thank you to Suhila El-Abbar who joined us as a translator on the trip. Bato Dambiev has been continuing with his archery training at the Archery Federation in Nicosia. We wish him luck in the upcoming championship!
