Başaran Ulusoy An everydayness museum, unprecedented in the world, opened its doors recently in Istanbul: the Museum of Innocence, imagined, conceived and finally realized by Nobel Literature Prize Laureate Turkish novelist Orhan Pamuk. You will read the details of this topic in the relevant article of our current issue. Moreover, you will be introduced to another museum you never guessed before that it existed: the Museum of Anatolian Carriages in Bursa. Even that much is sufficient to give you an idea regarding the wide scope of the world of museums and tell you about the raison d être of this magazine. In fact, the world of museology is an extraordinarily fertile universe. A universe which reflects the characteristics, the DNA of a country, community, credo or tradition; delivering to us their morphology and history. Not only does it shed light on our past, but also enlightens our present. But first and foremost, tells us who we are. That is the reason of the enthusiasm motivating our MÜZE DERGİ. The city was of fascinating beauty exactly like the goddess Aphrodite after which it was named. Nowadays, Aphrodisias is standing tall again in all its splendour thanks to archaeologist Prof. Kenan Erim, who dedicated his career and life to the site until his death in Afrodisias antik kentinde yer alan Sebasteion yapısı (solda) ve Afrodit tapınağı giriş kapısı (üstte). 8 dını ünlü Tanrıça Afrodit ten alan Afrodisias antik kenti, MÖ 13. yüzyıldan itibaren önemli bir ibadet ve kültür merkezi oldu. Alimlerin ve öğrencilerin uğrak yeri olan kent, Helenistik Dönem e, özellikle mimari ve heykel alanında damgasını vurmuştu. Afrodisiaslı sanatçılar yaptıkları heykellerin üzerine imzalarını atarlardı. Bu, o dönem için sık rastlanır bir durum değildi. Ama, kent muhteşem iklimi ve mermeri ile ünlüydü. Bu mermer kolay işlenebilir, yoğun, krem renginde, parlak küçük kristallerden oluşmuş kaliteli bir taştı. Yontulmaya uygun bu malzeme, Afrodisias ı heykel alanında söz sahibi bir kent haline getirdi. Kurulan heykeltraşlık okulu sayesinde 600 yıldan uzun bir süre, var olan en önemli heykeltraşlık merkezi olarak tanındı. Sanatçıların geliştirdiği stile manierist adı verildi ve bu akım Afrodisias ile birlikte anıldı. Ancak üst üste gelen şiddetli depremler kentin cazibesini yitirmesine sebep oldu. Afrodisias ın tarihi MÖ 13. yüzyıla kadar uzanıyor. Bugün, Aydın ili Karacasu ilçesine bağlı Geyre köyü yakınında yer alan kent, Salbakos (Baba) Dağı nın batı eteğinde, denizden yaklaşık 600 m. yükseklikteki bir plato üstünde kurulmuş, prehistorik bir yerleşim. Tarihi MÖ 13. yüzyıla kadar uzanıyor dedik ama esas kalıntılar MÖ 6. yüzyıla ait. Afrodisias o zamanlar küçük bir köymüş. Bu görünüm MÖ 2. yüzyılda ızgara planlı kentin kuruluşu ile epey değişmiş. MÖ 1. yüzyılda Roma İmparatoru Augustus, Afrodisias şehrini kişisel koruması altına almış. Kenti evi haline getirmiş, zenginleştirmiş. Bugün ayakta kalan anıtlar ondan sonraki iki yüzyıl içinde yapılan anıtlardır. MS 3. yüzyılın sonlarında kent, Roma İmparatorluğu nun Karia Eyaleti nin başkenti olmuş. MS 4. yüzyılın ortalarında da etrafı surlarla çevrilmiş. MS 6. yüzyıldan itibaren ise, sık sık tekrarlanan şiddetli depremler sonucu önemini kaybetmeye başlamış. Afrodit tapınağı kiliseye dönüştürülmüş. Küçük bir kasabaya dönen kent 12. yüzyılda tamamen terk edilmiş. Named after the goddess of beauty Aphrodite, the ancient city Aphrodisias was an important centre of worship and culture from the 13 th century BC onwards. It prospered as an important hub of art under Roman rule between the 1 st century BC and the 5 th century AD and was known for its Temple of Aphrodite and the rituals conducted there in her honour. The city set its mark on the Hellenistic period in the field of architecture and sculpture. The sculptors from Aphrodisias used to sign their work, which was quite unusual for the era. Aphrodisias was known for its wonderful climate and the marble from its region. It was an easily workable, dense, cream colour high quality stone consisting of shiny small crystals. A particularly appropriate material for sculpting, that marble turned the city into a prominent centre of sculpture. The school of sculpture established in Aphrodisias existed for over 600 years as the most eminent centre of the sculpture art. The style forged by the artists of the city was characterized as mannerist and referred to Aphrodisias as a benchmark. Eventually the city began to lose of its attraction due to successive violent earthquakes. The history of Aphrodisias dates back to the 13 th century BC. It was a prehistoric settlement established on a plateau 600 metres high from sea level on the slope of the Salbakos (Baba) Mountain, near the presentday town of Geyre of the Karacasu district, Aydın province. 9 from the 6 th century BC, at which time Aphrodisias was only a village. The face of the city changed with the establishment of an urban grid plan during the 2 nd century BC. Roman Emperor Augustus placed Aphrodisias under his personal protection in the 1 st century BC, made the city his home and developed it. The currently standing ruins belong to the monuments erected during the two centuries following that period. Aphrodisias became the capital city of the Roman Empire s Caria province towards the end of 3 rd century AD. The walls surrounding the city were erected in the middle of the 4 th century AD. As from the 6 th century AD, the city began to lose of its importance as a result of frequent violent earthquakes. The Aphrodite Temple was converted into a church. Progressively reduced into a small township, the city was totally abandoned at the 12 th century AD. Archaeological findings indicate that astronomy and medicine were among the sciences practiced in Aphrodisias alongside the arts of architecture and sculpture. The principal ruins visible today in the city belong to the Roman bath built during the reign of Emperor Hadrianus in the 2 nd century AD, the agora with the large pond, the Aphrodite Temple erected in the 1 st century BC, the stadium, the amphitheatre, the amphitheatre bath, the Odeon, the bishop residence and the school of philosophy. Yapılan arkeolojik araştırmalar sonucunda kentte mimarlık ve heykeltıraşlığın yanı sıra tıp ve astronomi alanlarında da çalışmalar yapıldığı belirlenmiş. Kentte görülebilecek başlıca yapı kalıntıları, MS 2. yüzyılda İmparator Hadrianus zamanında yapılan hamam, büyük havuzlu agora, MÖ 1. yüzyılda Tanrıça Afrodit için yapılan tapınak, stadyum, tiyatro, tiyatro hamamı, odeon, piskopos sarayı ve felsefe okuludur. Bölge Bronz Çağı içinde de önemli bir yerleşim alanı olmuş. Afrodisias ören yeri içinde bulunan ve arkeolojik araştırmalar yapılan Akropol ve Pekmez Tepe höyükleri, Bronz Çağı nın bütün tabakalarını kapsayan önemli buluntular verir. İç Anadolu Bronz Çağı uygarlıkları ürünleriyle bir arada çıkan bu buluntular, bölgede gelişmiş ticaret ve kültür alışverişi olduğunu belgeliyor. Afrodisias la evliyim 17. yüzyılın sonlarından itibaren Batılı gezgin ve araştırmacıların dikkatini çeken kentte önce İngiliz Dilettanti Derneği ekibi, ardından yılları arasında Fransız arkeolog ve gezgin Charles Texier le başlayan araştırmalar, 20. yüzyılın başlarında Fransız amatör arkeolog Paul Gaudin in arasında sürdürmüş olduğu kısa süreli kazılarla devam etti. Ancak kazılarla ilgili en büyük gelişme Prof. Kenan Erim in 1961 de başlattığı çalışmalardan sonra yaşandı. New York Üniversitesi adına başlattığı sistematik kazı ve incelemeler, kurtarma, koruma ve onarım alanında titizlikle sürdürüldü arasında National Geographic Society nin yardımlarıyla, özellikle Tiyatro ve prehistorik yerleşmelerin bulunduğu höyükte araştırmalara devam edildi. Günümüzde de sürdürülen bu çalışmalar, Erim in 1990 yılında ölümü üzerine New York Üniversitesi himayesinde; Oxford Üniversitesi Lincoln Kürsüsü nde Klasik Arkeoloji ve Sanat Profesörü olan Prof. R.R.R. Smith ile New York Üniversitesi Güzel Sanatlar Enstitüsü nde Prof. Christopher Ratte nin ortak yönetimi altında sürdürülmeye başlandı. Erim in, Afrodisias ekolü olarak tanımlanan heykeltraş sanatçıların eserlerine duyduğu ilgi, bu kazılarda inisiyatif almasında büyük rol oynamıştı. Neden evlenmediği sorulduğunda, Ben Afrodisias la evliyim diye yanıtlayan Erim in kabri de Afrodisias antik kenti içinde yer alıyor. Erim in çalışmalarıysa kaldığı yerden devam ediyor. Afrodisias, Türkiye nin en şanslı ören yerlerinden. Çünkü Geyre Vakfı, buranın korunması için yoğun bir çalışma yürütüyor. Onursal başkanlığını Kültür ve Turizm Bakanı Ertuğrul Günay ın, Başkanlık görevini de Koç Holding Başkan Vekili Ömer M. Koç un yaptığı Geyre Vakfı, Yapı Kredi Kültür 9

10 Sanat Yayıncılık ın da katkılarıyla Afrodisias ın sergi, konser, konferans gibi etkinliklerle kazı ve restorasyon çalışmalarının finansmanını sağlayıp, kentin tanıtımını gerçekleştiriyor. Müze, mimar Cengiz Bektaş ın eseri Afrodisias Müzesi, Geyre Vakfı ve Kültür ve Turizm Bakanlığı nın ortak çalışmasıyla 1979 yılında açıldı. Cengiz Bektaş tarafından tasarlanan müze binası, dikdörtgen formda bir merkez avlu etrafında genişliyor. Müzede, altı sergi salonunun yanısıra paha biçilemeyen Sebasteion panolarının aslına uygun biçimde sergilenebileceği uzun bir galeri yer alıyor. Müzede Afrodisias kazılarında elde edilen eserler sergileniyor. Eserlerin çoğunu, MÖ 5. yy. ile MÖ 1. yy. arasında, kentteki heykeltıraşlık okulunda yapılan heykeller oluşturuyor. Müzede ayrıca, Pekmez Tepe ve Akropol Tepe buluntuları olan prehistorik eserler, sikkeler ve heykeller sergilenmekte. Girişte, ünlü filozof ve devlet adamlarına ait büstlerin bulunduğu bir koridor uzanıyor. Koridorun sonunda imparator heykelleri, portre heykeller, büstler ve dört mevsimi simgeleyen ünik bir lahtin bulunduğu salona ulaşılıyor. Ara koridorda ise kentin kurucusu Zoilos un ana mezarına ait Augustus Dönemi kabartmalar var. Melpomene salonunda, devlet adamları Melpomene ve Apollon heykelleri bulunuyor. Boksör heykelleri, oturur durumda betimlenmiş sanatçılara ait heykellerin bulunduğu salonun adı ise Odeon. Köşede ise yarım kalmış heykeller sergileniyor. Ortada kentin ana tanrıçası Afrodit in kült heykelinin bulunduğu salonun adı da Afrodit Salonu. Doğal olarak en sık ziyaret edilen salon. Afrodisias ın büyüsünü anlamak için 8 bin kişilik tiyatro binasının tepe galerilerine tırmanmalı ve ardında uzanan manzarayı seyretmelisiniz. Hala ayakta duran kolonlar arasında gezmeli, Odeon da bir süre dinlenmelisiniz. Akdeniz in en iyi korunmuş antik stadyumunu, Afrodit Tapınağı nı, Tetrapilon u güneş batarken görmelisiniz. Burası her çağda birilerinin tutkuyla sevdiği bir kent oldu. Kölelikten gelen Zoilos, varını yoğunu kenti güzelleştirmek için harcadı. İmparator Augustus, kente olan düşkünlüğünü halktan vergi almayarak gösterdi. Arkeolog Kenan Erim hayatını buraya adadı. Bugün Geyre Vakfı nın özenerek koruduğu güzel Afrodisias ı görürseniz, siz de onu tutkuyla sevecek, özlemle anacaksınız. 10 Sırasıyla: L. Archaeological excavations carried out at the Acropolis Hill and Pekmez Hill mounds which are within the perimeter of the Aphrodisias historical site, led to the discovery of artefacts from all Bronze Age layers. Artefacts found here alongside with objects from the Central Anatolian Bronze Age civilizations constitute evidence of a lively commercial and cultural interaction having existed in the area during that period. I am married to Aphrodisias The city began to attract the attention of travellers and researchers as from the end of 17 th century. Initial excavations were undertaken by the British Society of Dilletanti, followed by French archaeologist and traveller Charles Texier between , continued by French amateur archaeologist Paul Gaudin in the years Nevertheless the breakthrough came with the systematic work initiated in 1961 by Prof. Kenan Erim on behalf of the New York University. Meticulous research, recovery, conservation and repair efforts were performed ever since then with great care. Excavations were pursued between the years with the assistance of the National Geographic Society, in particular at the tumulus sheltering the amphitheatre and the prehistoric settlements. Following the demise of Prof. Kenan Erim in 1990, excavations carried on under the aegis of New York University and are currently led by Professor Christopher Ratté, at New York University Institute of Fine Arts and Professor R.R.R. Smith, Lincoln College Professor of Classical Archaeology and Art at Oxford University. Prof. Erim s keen interest for the production of artists creating in the style of the Aphrodisias School of sculpture is certainly at the origin of his initiative to research the antique city. When asked about his enduring celibacy, he replied that he was married to Aphrodisias, the historical site where also his tomb is now situated. Prof. Erim s legacy continues to be in good hands. The Geyre Foundation is involved in intensive efforts for the conservation of Aphrodisias. Honorary President of the Foundation is Minister of Culture and Tourism, Ertuğrul Günay, its President is Deputy Chairman of the Koç Holding, Ömer M. Koç. The Geyre Foundation is organizing exhibitions, concerts and special events, for the promotion of Aphrodisias, that are sponsored by the Yapı Kredi Cultural Activities, Arts and Publications. The Museum designed by the architect Cengiz Bektaş The Museum of Aphrodisias, established through a joint effort of the Geyre Foundation with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, was inaugurated in Extending around a rectangular central courtyard, the museum structure was designed by the Turkish architect Cengiz Bektaş. Following its recent renovation, the museum now comprises, in addition to its six main exhibition halls, a new huge gallery appropriate for the installation according to original, of the priceless panels from the grandiose temple complex Sebasteion. 12 Afrodisias a gidin! Gezin, görün! Afrodit Tapınağı: Burası kentin odak noktası. Yapımına, MÖ I. yüzyıl sonlarında başlanmış. MS 2. yüzyılda, tapınağın etrafındaki alana, sütunlar ilave edilmiş. Afrodisias heykeltıraşlarının, kendilerini antik çağda önemli bir üne kavuşturan ustalık ve üretkenliklerinin ürünlerini, bu tapınakta görmek mümkün. Stadyum: 270 metre uzunluğunda, 30 bin kişiyi alabilecek kapasitede oturma yerleri olan yapı, dünyanın en iyi korunmuş ve en büyük stadyumlarından biri. MS I. yüzyılda koşu, uzun atlama, disk ve cirit atma, güreş gibi geleneksel spor yarışmalarında kullanılmak üzere inşa edilmiş. MS 400 yıllarında, yapının doğu tarafı içindeki bölümü Roma usulü, kan dökülen vahşi sporların yapıldığı arenaya dönüştürüldü. Gladyatörler ile vahşi hayvanların mücadeleleri izlendi. Tiyatro: Bina, hem gösteriler ve hem de halkın toplanma yeri olarak kullanılmış. İki bölümden oluşuyor. Kapasitesi yaklaşık 7 bin kişi. Üç katlı, mermerden yapılmış, gösterişli bir de sahne bölümü var. Hadrian Hamamı: Kentte bulunan en büyük kamusal yapıdır. MS 2. yüzyılda yapılan bina Roma İmparatoru Hadriana ya adanmıştır. İçinde insan boyutunda kabartma heykeller bulunmuştur. Go and see Aphrodisias! The Aphrodite Temple: Is at the heart of the ancient city. Its construction began in the 1 st century BC. Columns were added to the space surrounding the temple in the 2 nd century AD. The statues in this temple are works of art produced in the style of the renowned Aphrodisias School of Sculpture. The Stadium: 270 metres large, built with a seating capacity for 30 thousand spectators, one of the best preserved and largest structures of its kind in the Antique Mediterranean. It was built during the 1 st century AD, as an arena for classical athletics including running, long jump, disc and javelin throwing and wrestling. However, later in the years 400 AD, the eastern wing of the arena was used for violent bloody sports in Roman style, such as the fights between wild animals and gladiators. The Theatre: It was used as a venue for representations as well as a place for public meetings. Constructed as a marble structure on three floors, it is divided in two sections. It has a capacity of 7 thousand spectators and an impressive stage section. Hadrian Bath: It is the largest public building in the city. Dedicated to Roman Emperor Hadrianus, it was built in the 2 nd century AD in the form of a series of parallel vaulted rooms with each one allocated to a different function and usage, according to the era s Roman architectural style. The Sebasteion: The Sebasteion of Aphrodisias where human size relief statues were found inside, or Augusteum, was jointly dedicated, according to a 1 st century inscription on its propylon, To Aphrodite, the Divine Augusti and the People. An Augusteum was originally a site of the imperial cult of ancient Rome, named after the imperial title of Augustus. It was known as Sebasteion in the Greek East of the Roman Empire. Bu kentin, ünlü fotoğrafçı Ara Güler in 1958 yılında Kemer Barajı nın fotoğraflarını çekmek üzere Karacasu ya gittiği sırada yolda kaybolması sonucu gerçekleşen, ilginç bir keşif hikayesi var. Geyre Vakfı nın kurulmasına önayak olan Sevgi Gönül ün anısına 2008 de açılan Sebasteion Sevgi Gönül Salonu nun açılış sergisi de olan Ara Güler in keşif fotoğrafları Afrodisias hakkında çok şey anlatır. Hikayeyi Ara Güler den dinleyelim: Devir Adnan Menderes in son zamanlarıydı. Aydın da valiye gittim. Adnan Menderes in açılış yapacağı baraj var. Beni oraya gönder, açılışta resim çekeceğim dedim. Şoför dedi Ben bir kestirme yol biliyorum, oradan gidelim. Kestirme yoldan giderken yolu kaybettik. Yolu kaybedince de nereye gitsek karşıma hep o büyük kayalar çıkıyordu. Güneş battı ve zifiri karanlık oldu. Gidiyoruz, gidiyoruz yine aynı kayalıklara geliyoruz. Kaybolduk! Baktım bir ışık var. Bir kahve Kahveye girdik, adamlar oyun oynuyor. Lüks lambasıyla aydınlanıyordu. Biraz sonra gözüm ışığa alıştı, bir de baktım ki kahvede masa yok. Sütun başlıklarını masa yapmışlar ve üstünde domino oynuyorlar. Tarih ve bugün iç içe yaşamaktadır. Böyle acayip bir yer hayatımda görmedim. Harabe dediğin harabedir. Ama bu öyle değil, bu bambaşka. Bu, tarih içinde yaşayan bir şehir Baktım ki taşların içinden suratlar bana bakıyor. Hemen aklıma röportajın adı geldi; Aphrodisias çığlığı O taşlar bana bakıyor ve beni buradan kurtar! diye çığlık atıyor. Ara Güler in keşfinden sonra bölgede hemen kazı çalışmaları başlatıldı de Kenan Erim önderliğinde başlatılan kazılar bugün, aralarında New York Üniversitesi nin de bulunduğu birkaç üniversite tarafından birlikte yürütülüyor. Those rocks look at me and scream for help... The Sebasteion Sevgi Gönül Hall established in memory of that personality who greatly contributed to the creation of the Geyre Foundation was inaugurated in 2008 with an exhibition of Aphrodisias photographs taken by the famous photographer Ara Güler in the fifties. In fact, the discovery of Aphrodisias is closely associated with an interesting anecdote with Ara Güler at the lead role. So, listen to him: I was sent in 1958 to take pictures at the opening ceremony of a water dam in Aydın to be inaugurated by then Prime Minister Adnan Menderes. So I went to the Governor of Aydın and asked him to have me escorted to the area where the ceremony was going to take place. The driver pretending to know a shortcut leading to the place lost his way. While turning in circles to find our way, we were constantly faced with those huge rocks. Finally the sun went down, it was dark and we were still lost. Then I spotted light in a coffeehouse lit by oil lamps and went inside. When my eyes were accustomed to the dim light, I noticed that there were no tables at the coffeehouse; the guests were playing domino on historic column headers used as tables. The scene was so interesting; something I had never seen before. Ruins are ruins, but that was totally different: history and present were surprisingly interpenetrated in the same space; ancient historic figures and faces were looking at me from amongst the columns and imploring me to rescue them! So, I thought immediately of an adequate title for my feature report: The Scream from Aphrodisias...Those rocks and stones were looking at me and screaming for help... Excavations and salvation actions were launched in the region following the adventurous discovery of Aphrodisias by Ara Güler. The archaeological work in the area is still underway, conducted by a team of researchers from different horizons under the leadership of New York University. The museum located near the ancient city of Aphrodisias, houses pieces unearthed from the excavations in Aphrodisias. Prehistoric artefacts dating back to 5000 BC and the Bronze Age artefacts found in excavations at the Acropolis Hill and Pekmez Hill, Lydian ceramics found in these hills and Archaic, Classic and Hellenistic Period statues from the ruins of the Temple of Aphrodite are all exhibited in the museum. Tombs and statues created by artists from the Aphrodisias sculpture school are among the major pieces of the museum. A long corridor lined on both sides by busts of philosophers and statesmen takes place at the entrance of the museum. The corridor leads to a large hall where emperor statues, portrait sculptures, portrait busts and a unique sarcophagus symbolizing the four seasons are exhibited. The main hallway houses Augustus period reliefs from the main tomb of Zoilos, the founder of the city. Statues of Statesmen, of the god Apollo and of the Muse of Tragedy Melpomene are exhibited at the Melpomene Hall. Boxing athlete statutes and sculptures of artists in seated posture are located in the Odeon Hall. A series of unfinished sculptures are exhibited in the corner. The cult statue of Aphrodite is situated in the central hall named after the goddess as the Aphrodite Hall, which is of course also the museum s most visited room. In order to realize the fascinating aura of Aphrodisias, one should climb to the top galleries of the amphitheatre built for a capacity of 8 thousand spectators, admire the spectacular view from there, walk between the still standing columns, take a rest at the Odeon, visit the best conserved antique stadium of the Mediterranean, admire at sunset the Aphrodite Temple and the monumental Tetrapylon gateway. The city charmed its admirers during all ages. Zoilos who was a freed slave spent his whole fortune to enhance the city s beauty. Emperor Augustus exonerated the city from taxes. Archaeologist Kenan Erim dedicated his life to Aphrodisias. Anyone would be overcome by its magic after a visit to the city currently under the scrupulous protection of the Geyre Foundation. 14

18 ezan Has Müzesi ni gezerken, buranın henüz 2007 de açıldığına inanası gelmiyor insanın. O ilk serginin ismi gibi, zamansız bir sadelik hakim müzeye. Köklü, olgun, oturmuş Uluslararası Doğu Halı Konferansı nın açılış sergisi olan Zamansız Sadelik ile 2007 Mayıs ında açılışı yapılan Rezan Has Müzesi o günden bu yana aktif müzecilik anlayışı doğrultusunda özgün sergiler ve kültürel etkinlikler düzenliyor. Müze, günümüzden yaklaşık 9 bin yıl öncesine tarihlenen arkeolojik eser koleksiyonunun yanı sıra 2009 yılında Cibali Tütün Fabrikası na ait belge ve objeleri de bünyesine katarak koleksiyonunu zenginleştirdi. 17. yüzyıla ait Osmanlı hamam yapısı ve 11. yüzyıl Bizans su sarnıcı ile geçmişi geleceğe bağlayan bir müze mekanı oldu. Kadir Has Üniversitesi içinde yer alan Rezan Has Müzesi iki bölümden oluşuyor. Neolitik Dönem den Selçuklu Dönemi ne kadar geniş bir zaman dilimini kapsayan arkeolojik eser koleksiyonu müze katında yer alırken, çok amaçlı sergi salonu katında ise, başta Türk Resim Sanatı konulu sergiler olmak üzere, tematik ve özgün sergiler düzenleniyor. Exhibition halls of the Rezan Has Museum. 18 Rezan Has Museum opened its doors for the first time in 2007 through an exhibition of costumes designed of fabrics originating from the dates of the Ottoman Empire up to our present-day, organized under the title Timeless Simplicity within the framework of the 1st International Conference on Oriental Carpets. The museum continues today to reflect indeed the spirit of its first exhibition in its well-established and mature simplicity. The museum is a bridge between the past and the present owing partly to its building combining a 17th Century Ottoman bath structure with an 11th Century Byzantine cistern. Its archaeological collection of artefacts originating from 9 thousand years ago onwards, was supplemented with the documents and objects belonging to the former Cibali Tobacco and Cigarette Factory. Rezan Has Museum located on the campus of the Kadir Has University consists of two principal departments. The archaeological artefacts collection spanning a large time period from the Neolithic Age all the way to the Seljuk era is located at the museum floor. The second department, the multi-purpose events hall is hosting throughout the year, various thematic and genuine art exhibitions, in particular of Turkish painting art.

20 Haliç in gözdesi Haliç uzun süredir çok ciddi bir mekansal dönüşüm sürecinde. Bölgenin; müzelerin ve kültür merkezlerinin sıralandığı bir kentsel festival ve kutlama mekanı olması yönünde güçlü yatırımlar yapılıyor. Bu yatırımlar Haliç in kuzey yakasında yer alan fabrikalar, tersaneler, gemi kızakları, elektrik santralleri, mezbahalar gibi yerlerde yoğunlaşmış durumda. Kuzey Haliç Tersane-i Amire den başlayarak, Aynalıkavak Kasrı, Koç Müzesi, Sütlüce Kültür Merkezi, Minyatürk, Silahtarağa Müze Bölgesi ne kadar uzanan bir süreklilikte bir kültür kıyısı haline geliyor. Buna karşın liman yapıları birikimi neredeyse tamamen silinen Güney Haliç kıyısında, özellikle Eminönü Eyüp arasındaki bölgede, Kuzey kıyısına benzer bir yoğunluktan söz etmek pek mümkün değil. Kıyı gerisinde Fener-Balat, Tahtakale gibi önemli çekim noktaları yer alsa da, kıyıda Feshane-i Amire, Kadın Eserleri Kütüphanesi, Zindan Han ve Baba Cafer Zindanı dışında kent bütününe hitap eden alanların olduğunu söylemek zor. İşte burada Rezan Has Müzesi nin önemi bir kez daha ortaya çıkıyor. Kadir Has Üniversitesi binası ve dolayısıyla Rezan Has Müzesi de, bu dönüşümün bir parçası. Mekan, 2002 yılında Kadir Has Vakfı tarafından Cibali Tütün ve Sigara Fabrikası ndan dönüştürülmüştü. Hatta bu restorasyonu gerçekleştirirken, içinde yer aldığı tarihi çevrenin gelişimine sunduğu katkı nedeniyle 2003 yılında Europa Nostra Ödülü almıştı. Binada bir müze açmak fikri ise, restorasyon sırasında alt kısımda Osmanlı Dönemi ne ait hamam kalıntısı ile Bizans Dönemi su sarnıcının gün yüzüne çıkması sonrasında gelişti. Urartu Uygarlığı na ait aksesuarlar. Accessories belonging to the Civilization of Urartu. 20 Golden Horn s Favourite The Golden Horn area has been undergoing an extensive re-structuring for a while. Significant investments were made to establish a series of museums and cultural centres there, in order to convert the area into a recreational zone for the holding of city festivals and special events. They focused particularly on the former factories, building cradles, shipyards, ship launch rails, electrical power plants, abattoirs located in the Northern part of the area. Now, the Northern part of the Golden Horn is in the process of being transformed into a cultural development area where historical buildings starting from the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art, Tersane-i Amire (Maritime Arsenal and Dockyard of the Kaptan Pasha (Captain of the Sea), Aynalıkavak Pavillion, Rahmi M. Koç Industry Museum, Sütlüce Culture Centre Miniatürk and Silahtarağa Museum District with their rich cultural heritage stand all along its coastal line. For the Southern coastal line of the Golden Horn, in particular the district between Eminönü and Eyüp where almost all historical and cultural heritage of its port structure was destroyed, a concentrated activity similar to that of the Northern part did not take place. Although some important points of attraction such as Fener- Balat and Tahtakale are situated at the inner side, the southern coastal line of the Golden Horn remained poor in terms of cultural structuring other than Feshane-i Âmire, Women s Work Library Zindan Han and Baba Cafer Zindanı. The Golden Horn is being transformed into a port museum, so that it is necessary to develop also the Southern part through intensive activities similar to those performed for the Northern part. In this sense, the Rezan Has Museum for Golden Horn Cultures established and located inside the Kadir Has University is a very significant initiative and fills an essential gap within the framework of such an important strategic geography. Kadir Has University s main building which was converted from Cibali Tobacco and Cigarette Factory by Kadir Has Foundation in 2002 has been granted the European Nostra Award in 2003 due to its extremely meticulous and comprehensive restoration and its contributions to the historical environment in which it is situated. The venue opened to the public as the Rezan Has Museum was established following the discovery of the ruins of a hamam dating back to the Ottoman era and a Byzantine cistern found underneath the historical factory building following the completion of its restoration. Seferikos Cistern and Ottoman Hammam The cisterns, the water reservoirs made of stone, were important structures within the water supply system of the city during the Byzantine period. The cistern located in the Rezan Has museum dating back to the
