(1.2) Understand and interpret written and spoken Turkish on a variety of topics related to Turkish radios and broadcasters; (1.3) Present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on such topics. Cultures: (2.2) Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the Turkish culture by looking into aspects that are important to Turkish people locally and globally. Connections: (3.1) Reinforce and expand your knowledge of mass media and communication through Turkish. Communities: (5.2) Show evidence of becoming life- long learners by using the language for personal enjoyment and enrichment by preparing a radio show and sharing it with your friends. 2 MIND MAP 1) BAĞLAM/CONTEXT This module focuses on radio shows and the conversations around it. In this module, you will learn about Turkish radio stations, Turkish music, and how to get to know a person you just met. You will practice basic speech patterns that you use when you are making small talk. You will also learn about new trends and important topics in the Turkish news while preparing for the radio show you will present. You will work on your interviewing skills and, in the end, practice how to broadcast an interesting and engaging radio show for your classmates. 3 2) TEMATİK PROJE / THEMATIC PROJECT PREPARE A RADIO SHOW In this project, you will familiarize yourself with everyday use of basic Turkish language through conversations around radio. You will practice how to introduce yourself and briefly talk about your interests, what you like and do not like, while preparing a radio show. You will listen to Turkish radio shows and interview your friends to get to know each other. You will work within a group to prepare an entireradio show that is both interesting and incorporates introductory language. Revision of tenses. Take notes on how radio listeners introduce themselves, ask for a song, and dedicate it to someone. Take notes on how the interviewer asks questions and how the interviewee responds to them. Practice the list of conversational patterns with a friend. Pair up with a classmate and prepare a 20- minute radio show together. ACTION: Prepare a 20- minute radio show in Turkish. THEME: Radio shows in Turkey. OPERATION: Basic conversational structures. ÖNERİLER / GUIDELINES A. What am I going to do? 1. Take a look at the Appendix and practice the list of conversational patterns with a friend. 2. Listen to some of the online Turkish radio stations (see the Internet Links). Pay special attention to how the hosts present their shows, talk to guest speakers and listeners who call into the 4

5 show for conversations and song requests. Take notes on how callers introduce themselves, ask for a song, and dedicate it to special people in their lives. 3. Watch the interview with Serdar Gökalp, host of the radio show Serdar Yayında broadcasted by Best FM. Take notes on how the interviewer asks questions and how the interviewee responds to them. What kind of topics do they talk about? 4. Pair up with a classmate and prepare a 20- minute radio show together. Your show should be complete with a most- listened- to song list, a guest speaker, and an audience calling into the show and making song requests. Record your show and create a podcast.
