2 Export Watch Pakistan Exports (global) Export progress Readymade Garments July-December 2007 During the period from July to December 2007, exports of Readymade Garments witnessed a slight decline of 1.4% while knitwear dropped by 7.7%. A slowdown in production was registered on account of increasing input costs, deteriorated law and order situation and ever increasing energy problem. The month of December in 2007 registered overall decline of 25% in the textile and apparel sector while total exports of Pakistan dropped by 12%. Far from meeting the export target for , the first and second quarters of the current fiscal year have seen textile exporters struggling to maintain their performance of previous years. 3 Market Guide The Turkish Market Turkey is a dynamic emerging-market economy strategically located between Europe and Asia. Clothing and textiles exports play significant role in its economy. Worldwide Turkey was the 9 th largest supplier of textile and 4 th of clothing in Further, it was the 2 nd supplier to the EU clothing market. But Turkey is also a growing importer of apparel, and a major hub for re-exports of garments. Improvement of macro economic conditions During the 1980s Turkey launched a liberal economy and export-led growth model. Later, in the wake of the economic crisis in 2001, massive financial reforms were initiated leading to fall in inflation, increased foreign investment and reduction in unemployment. Through economic reforms such as reduced government controls on foreign trade and privatization of publiclyowned industries, Turkey has gradually opened up its markets. Today Turkey is among the 20 largest economies of the world. Driven by the private sector, the economy has been growing without interruption for five years around 7 percent. The GDP growth was 5% in 2007, making Turkey one of the fastest growing economies. Higher private consumption is also expected in 2008 along with a better business environment and decreased interest rates. Rapid development of retail industry The first shopping mall in was constructed in 1988 named Galleria, adding to the two existing malls at the time in all of Turkey. By 1990 the number of malls increased to 35, and in the past 7 years it reached 149. During 2006 and 2007 alone about 120 new centres opened. Today, has the most locations with a total of 53 centres, followed by 16 in Ankara and 12 in Izmir. For every 1000 persons there is 32 sqm of shopping mall space in Turkey and the number of malls is expected to grow up to 500 within the next 5 years, while construction of the country s largest mall, Forum is under planning. - a 150,000 sqm complex in. As the retail industry is developing, Turkish brands are opening stores in all of the locations, regardless of their positioning. It is predicted that such boom in the development of shopping centres will have great effects on the economy, the purchasing behaviour of the buyers, the lifestyles of the consumers, and the establishment of brands in Turkey. 2

4 Demographics In 2007, Turkey was the 17th most populated country. Its population stood at 75 million with a growth rate of 1.04% per annum. The Turkish population is relatively young with 25.5% falling within the 0-15 age bracket and half of the population below 28. Persons within the age groups, i.e. the working ages, constitute 66.5 % of the total population. Data source: wikipedia Clothing trends Because of its strategic location astride two continents, Turkey's culture has a unique blend of eastern and western tradition. Over 60% of the inhabitants of modern Turkey live in urban areas. Forces of the global economy have created changes in lifestyles making traditional dress and textile production disappear at an astounding rate. Most Turks are Muslims, but Turkish society is predominantly modern, so western clothing prevails in urban areas, although some Muslim women cover their dress with a coat and wear a head-scarf, or cover themselves completely with a black cloak. Women in some villages continue to wear all or parts of their traditional dress, especially for ceremonial events such as weddings. Common in most villages is the baggy trouser (salvar) worn sometimes with a skirt over the top, a long-sleeved blouse or T-shirt, a sweater-vest, and a headscarf. Many observant Turkish Muslim women (perhaps 30% of the female population) dress in tesettür, a headscarf and light cover-all topcoat, when going out in public. On the other hand, Turkish folk dance groups have kept some of the elaborate dress ensemble traditions alive. Climate Turkey has a Mediterranean temperate climate, with hot dry summers and mild wet and cold winters, though conditions can be much harsher in the more arid interior. Temperatures of 30 C to 40 C can occur in the mountainous areas in the east, and snow may lie on the ground 120 days of the year. In the west, winter temperatures average below 1 C. Summers are hot and dry, with temperatures generally above 30 C in the day. The varied climate structure suggests that there is large demand for both summer and winter clothing. Germany is the largest destination (26%) followed by UK with fast growing imports (18%). However, in view of rising production costs, the rise in the Turkish lira and increasing competition from Asian suppliers, Turkish companies are transforming themselves from garment manufacturers to fashion creators. Consequently, production has moved at a record pace towards more value-added goods and creation of brand names. 3

5 On the other hand, during 2007 there has been a strong growth in shipments from Turkey to rapidly expanding Eastern EU markets such as Hungary (+525% growth), Romania (+203%), Poland (+98%) and Bulgaria (+26%). The trend in international markets grows towards healthier and environmental friendly products. In parallel to the developments of world markets, technical and functional textile production and diversification is increasing in Turkey, and the technical segment is expected to gain more importance in the coming years. Some prominent fields include filtration textiles, military and medical products, protective and functional products, nanotechnology etc. Between 2000 and 2006, Turkey s technical textile export rose by two folds. With its adaptability to European standards and regulations related to environment, health, quality and safety Turkey is aiming to move into the production of more and more value added products. As Turkey is rapidly refocusing and repositioning on higher market segments, there is growing potential for imports of garments from the cheaper Asian suppliers. Surge in apparel imports into Turkey s retail market. Turkey has seen a surge in low-cost imported apparel at retail, particularly from China. Over recent years, Turkish imports of Chinese apparel climbed tenfold, exceeding $150 million in During 2006, Turkey imported US$ 7.4 billion in Textile and apparel, which accounted for 5.4% of its total imports. Meanwhile, clothing exports accounted for US$ 10.9 billion. The Turkish apparel sector exports approximately 60% of its production, while 40% of its production is going to the local market, i.e., US$ 7.2 billion. Therefore, import of apparel accounts for 10% of the local demand. But this percentage is expected to grow rapidly in coming years. A study conducted by Gian Mario Borney (2007) on apparel supply chains predicted that as Turkey and Eastern Europe are rapidly repositioning on higher market segments, and therefore there is growing potential for import of basic products in these markets. It is also reported that Turkish consumers have ever-increasing disposable incomes as a result of the liberalized economy. Turks consume locally designed fashions almost as ravenously as similarly priced imports. Also, with its young and increasing population, the Turkish internal market is gradually becoming more sophisticated and as in other countries, the demand for textile and clothing products is forecast to diversify. Apparel Exports from Pakistan In 2007, Pakistan s all merchandise exports to Turkey stood at US$ 390 million, a 28% increase from the previous fiscal year. The share of apparel exports was 6%, i.e., US$ 6.7 million, where the largest category of growth was woven readymade garments (+312%). 7 In line with Turkey s demand, Pakistan supplies greater proportion of woven garments, which is also the fastest growing category. Major chunk of garment exports from Pakistan to Turkey consist of men s cotton trousers (woven), where major sub-categories are corduroy (56%) and denim trousers (30%). In the men s cotton trousers category, Turkey mostly imports denim (33%) and other material cotton trousers (43%) from world. In the list of Turkey s progressive products, supply of woven cotton skirts from Pakistan is growing, whilst the market for this item is growing in Turkey as well. Men s anoraks of man-made fibres is also a growing product in Turkey and the 4 th export item to Turkey from Pakistan. However, there is large and growing potential for many other items such as pullovers, cardigans, women cotton trousers, T-Shirts, women anoraks and women dresses in Turkey, for which supply from Pakistan is negligible at present. Asian suppliers of apparel to Turkey. Among Asian countries, China, Bangladesh and India are leading suppliers of garments to Turkey. At global scale, China is the first garment supplier to Turkey, Bangladesh the 3 rd and India the 4 th. 9 Conclusion As seen above, the growing demand for cloths in Turkey is largely being catered by increasing exports, particularly from India and Bangladesh. There is large potential in Turkey with consistent growth in the demand of various items like pullovers and cardigans while a sharp growth is also registered in the demand for cotton T-shirts, cotton shirts, and women cotton trousers. But export prices of Indian and Chinese products are expected to increase in tune with the Indian rupee and Chinese Yuan strengthening against the Dollar, coupled with China s cut down on incentives to its garment industry. So, this is an opportunity that Pakistan can effectively exploit provided that better efforts are given into design and value addition. 8
