1 ITEF-İstanbul Tanpınar Literature Festival May 5th May 11th 2014 ITEF 2014 "City and Journey" Activity Report The sixth annual ITEF-Istanbul Tanpınar Literature Festival took place May 5-11, 2014, around the theme City and Journey. The principal sponsor was Vehbi Koç Foundation. Literature fans had the chance to meet their favorite authors from home and abroad, and follow a schedule packed with colloquies, workshops and a range of activities for children duringmay 5-8. The festival launched two brand new programs, ITEF-Literature in the Kitchen and ITEF-Children, during 9-11 May. Thanks to support from ANA Bookshop, the ITEF-Book Tent displayed books by the festival authors, and this venue hosted seminars as well as book-signing sessions where literature aficionados had the chance to get autographed versions of their favorite works. Close-up: Polish Literature Today To mark the 600th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Poland and Turkey, prominent contemporary Polish writers took their place among the festival authors as the guests of ITEF, thanks to arrangements by the Polish Book Institute. Introducing Polish literature to festival attendees were: author and cineaste Andzrej Bart, considered Poland s Thomas Pynchon; Newsweek-Poland s publishing director Zygmunt Miloszewski; a formidable name in underground literature, Wojciech Kuczok; children s literature author and critic Joanne Olech, and professor and artist Adam Pekalski. 1

2 Foreign Authors at Schools In cooperation with the Istanbul Provincial Directorate for National Education, ITEF organizes the Foreign Authors at Schools Program. Initiated in 2012, this year featured visits to 20 public schools by 8 overseas writers of children's literature who hail from 8 different countries. They include Swedish author Asa Lind, who is popular in the international literary arena as well as in Turkey; German author Jürgen Banscherus, who won children s hearts with his Detective Kwaaikofski series; Lebanese author Fatima Sharafeddine, twice nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Awards, andmaritgen Matter, winner of the Silver Griffels, the prestigious Dutch award for children s literature. They visited 20 Istanbul public schools in districts such as Şişli, Beykoz, Bahçelievler, Beylikdüzü, Ümraniye, Bakırköy, Zeytinburnu and Bağcılar. The Story of My Life Another surprise is in store for festival followers this year The Story of My Life. Three popular authors personally read excerpts from the literary texts that most influenced them, and then detail how they were inspired by these works. They are Yekta Kopan, winner of the Sait Falk Story Award (2002), and the Haldun Taner Story Award and the Yunus Nadi Story Award (both in 2010); Hikmet Hükümenoğlu, who brought a fantastic edge to his murder and suspense thriller writing in 04.00; and Ercan Kesal, author of Peri Gazozu, scriptwriter forthree Monkeys and Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, both directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, and also fledgling actor who first appeared in Distant, by the same famous director. ITEF 2014-Festival Book After the festival, texts of participating authors will be published in The City and Journey ITEF Festival Book. Paper used for this anthology is contributed by UPM-Kymmene Kağıt Ürünleri San. ve Tic. Ltd. Şti. Since 2010, the book has been compiled and distributed annually on a complimentary basis at Turkish and international book fairs, and signifies the festival's creative output and long-term impact. ** 2

3 In cooperation with the International Festival of Authors (IFOA) based in Toronto, Canada, the festival presented The Family Plot, a conversation featuring Alison Pick, who was nominated for the Man Booker Award for her second novel, Far to Go; Vincent Lam, a nominee for Canada's prestigious Governor General's Award for Fiction; and radio host Eleanor Watchel, a member of the IFOA delegation, who moderated. ** As a part of ITEF this year, in cooperation with The Association of Fantasy and Science Fiction Artists (Fabisad), a series of events about dystopias, our indigenous fears and local history of fantasy were held. In addition, editors of GIO Award 2013 Selected Stories moderated a panel discussion highlighting new local voices of fantasy and writers whose works are featured in the book. ** In keeping with ITEF 2014's City and Journey theme, an evaluation of Turkish travel writing in literature, past and present, were featured. In cooperation with Sırtçantılar (Backpackers) Group, a session entitled On the Road presented Murat Belge and Sevengül Sönmez exploring the topic of travel narratives in contemporary literature, and this was followed by a second, Road and Travel in Turkish-language Literature. In addition, as a part of the festival, a retrospective and contemporary look at writing in Laz, Armenian and Kurdish, and current policies and practices in multilingual publishing were discussed in cooperation with PEN Turkey. ITEF brings together publishing professionals of the world ITEF-Fellowship program promoted the Turkish publishing scene to 15 publishing professionals including publishers, festival organizers and international journalists who are active in various fields. Through its Fellowship Program, Turkey s premier international literary happening, ITEF- Istanbul Tanpınar Literature Festival, reinforces its position as the meeting point for publishers, literary agents, authors, translators, journalists, literature fund managers, literature festival coordinators and publishing enthusiasts. Sponsored by Yunus Emre Institute and Timaş Yayınları Publishing House, this year's ITEF-Fellowship Program hosted 20 international literary professionals, bringing them together with their Turkish counterparts. All aspiring candidates were publicly invited to formally apply, and 20 were selected. During the first two days of the festival, participants will be presented with a broad panorama of the Turkish literary scene via group meetings, visits to firms in the publishing business, and parties attended by literary personalities. 3

4 ITEF 2014 Facts and Figures ** 105 authors attenders City and Journey themed ITEF İstanbul Tanpinar Literature Festival was hold in 8 venues consisted with 20 writers from 8 countries. This year's programme comprised 87 events 3 different tents were established in Caddebostan carried out in a total area of 400 m2 Attendance of the events in festival s branches was open to public and free of charge together with the events in schools for children and young adults. The total number of guest writers has reached to 450 since the launch of the festival in The organizational team was comprised of 4 festival consultants, 3 assistants, 23 volunteers and 1 photographers. ITEF cooperated with Istanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education to bring the festival s eight foreign guests who met with children in the Writers in Schools programme in 10 boroughs of Istanbul. The festival anthology which will be published in Turkish (September 2014) Two new programs at ITEF: ITEF-Literature in the Kitchen and ITEF-Children ITEF-Literature in the Kitchen, sponsored by Koçtaş which provided cooking facilities, brings together 43 professionals including master chefs and authors both literary and those specializing in food culture to discuss the rich variety of cuisines through which Turkey's cultural diversity expresses itself in 33 different events. 4

5 In the ITEF-Children program, popular children s literature writers connected with their young fans via creative reading, creative drama and drawing workshops and interactive discussions. Sponsored by the bakery Komşufırın and health care provider Liv Hospital,ITEF-Literature in the Kitchen and ITEF-Children were two additions to the 2014 festival that will feature for many years to come. The opening of the ITEF-Literature in the Kitchen program was hosted at Sahan Restaurant by popular crime novelist Ahmet Ümit, and Tahir Tekin Öztan, the author of Gaziantep Cuisine from Past to Future who established the Foundation for Research and Development of Anatolian Cuisine. They presented a seminar on Gaziantep cuisine. Sea Food in the Mediterranean Cuisine: The popular chef of Channel 24Kitchen Gabriele Sponza will hold a cooking event for the ITEF followers. Elif Tanrıyar will interview Sponza about the Mediterranean Cuisine during the cooking event. A Trip to Today's Turkish Cuisine: Artur Unsal interprets current developments in the field of culinary culture in Turkey and guides the audiences to the discussions about the agenda of today's Turkish Cuisine. Suphi Cuisine: Writer and researcher Nevin Halıcı, known for her meticulous work on Sufi Cuisine in the field of philosophy, history, religious practices and beliefs, and the truly inspiring array of dishes in the Sufi cuisine to the enthusiasts with a special event. ITEF-Children brought the leading authors in children's literature in Turkey together with childrens: This event series included creative reading, creative drama, simultaneously drawing workshops and interviews with children. ITEF-Children welcomed students who are willing to explore and read to the events with the contributions of Mavibulut Publishing House and Atlas Çocuk Magazine. 5

6 Atlas Çocuk Magazine built a "Tree of Curiosity" and children wrote down what they have been curious about. Then they put this writings up on the tree and had the chance to share their ideas with each other. All of the writings will be published in the next issue of the magazine in June. Adventure time for children: Children-book author and actress Görkem Yeltan joined ITEF in an improvised story telling workshop. The author showed children how they can be all writers just by thinking and imagining. Children books author Çiğdem Odabaşı met with the children in an creative drama workshop, inspired by the tale of Sevdalı Bulut, written by Nazım Hikmet and under the name of "Dondurma Yok mu? Peli " author Tülin Kozikoğlu read her own books with the workshop of cinematographic reading.
