2 FERMI S PARADOX ın A TEXTBOOK Art Hobart PHYSICS Bölüm 11: SETI den Alt Bölüm 8: Fermi nin sorusu : Herkes nerede? Yerötesi yaşamı çevreleyen belirsizliklere karşın, bazı bilimciler her zaman daha ilerde spekülasyonlar geliştirmişlerdir. Bunlardan biri, 2. Dünya Savaşı sırasında Amerikan nükleer silah geliştirme çabaları liderlerinden ve nükleer reaktörün kaşifi büyük fizikçi Enrico Fermi dir. Fermi, hidrojen bombasının mucidi Edward Teller diğerleri ile, 1950 de Los Alamos Nükleer Silahlar Laboratuarında iken bir öğle yemeği sırasında konuşuyordu. Konuşma yıldızlararası yolculuğun farklı şekilleri üzerine geldi. Masadaki herkes, yaşamın Evren de yaygın bir süreç olduğunda hemfikirdiler. Bu sırada Fermi şu soruyu sordu: Peki «herkes» nerde? Bunu hiç merak etmiyor musunuz?. Bundan sonra, (kitabımzın bu bu bölümünde) yaptığımız türden bir analiz yaparak, «yaşamın sadece birçok yerde ortaya çıkmış olabileceğini değil, aynı zamanda birçok yıldızın gezegenlerinde akıllı ve teknolojik yaşama evrilmiş olmaları gerektiğine inandığını» belirtti. Buradan şu sonuca ulaşmıştı: «yıldızlararası yolculuklar yapabilen ve Samanyolu nun yerleşilebilir bölgelerini kolonileştirmiş olması gereken yerötelilerce, çok önceden başlayarak birçok defalar ziyaret edilmiş olmamız gerekir».

3 FERMI S PARADOX ın A TEXTBOOK-2 Fermi, ziyaret yokluğunu açıklamak için şu 3 makul nedeni ileri sürüyordu: (i) yıldızlararası yolculuklar imkansızdır; (ii) yıldızlararası yolculuklar hiçbir zaman yapılmaya değer bulunmamıştır; (iii) teknolojik medeniyetler var olmakla birlite, bu yolculuğu gerçekleştirecek düzeylere erişinceye kadar uzun süreler var olamamaktadırlar.

4 FERMI S PARADOX ın A TEXTBOOK-3 Fermi ve arkadaşları o yemek sonrası tartışmada, 1 nolu nedeni geçersiz sayarak yıldızlararası yolculukları (kitabımızda daha önce tartışılan nedenlerle) olanak dahilinde bulmaktaydılar: 2 nolu spekulasyonun doğru olması teknolojik düzeye ulaşmış medeniyetlerin sayıca az olmaları demektir. Fermi bu nedeni de makul bulmuyordu. Fermi nin inandığı gibi, (3 nolu neden) bu tür fazla sayıda medeniyetler var ise o zaman bunların her birinin yolculuk ve kolonileştirmeye değmeyecek bir gayret olarak bakmış olamazlar. Sadece bir tek medeniyetin bile yolculuk ve giderek, kolonizasyona olumlu bakmasıyla Samanyolu, bu yolculukların başlamasından sonra birkaç milyon yıl içinde tümüyle kolonileştirilmiş olurdu.

6 FERMI S PARADOX ın A TEXTBOOK-4 Fermi nin, teknolojik medeniyetlerin yıldızlararası yolculukları gerçekleştirecek kadar çok uzun sürmediği şeklindeki 3. varsayımı «kısa ömür hipotezi» olarak bilinir. Medeniyetler kendi teknolojilerini aşıp yaşamlarını sürdürebilirler mi? Bu soruyu daha da somutlaştırmak için önce şu noktayı göz önüne alalım: Samanyolu muz yaklaşık 12 milyar yıl yaşındadır. Kısacası, yaklaşık 5 milyar yaşındaki Güneş in doğumundan 7 milyar önceden beri yıldızlar oluşuyolar, yakıtlarını tüketiyorlar ve ölüyorlardı. Bizden önce teknolojik hale geçmiş medeniyetler var idiyse, bunların çoğu uzun süreler önce teknolojik düzeye erişmiş olmalılar.

7 FERMI S PARADOX ın A TEXTBOOK-5 Bunu daha iyi açıklamak için, somut bir örnek geliştirelim: Örneğin Fermi nin de makul bulduğu şekilde, şimdiye kadar (halen, o dönemde -1950ler- bile yıldızların 10 katı mertbesinde) var olduğu hesaplanan 1 trilyon gezegenden) 1000 tanesinde (10- **9 olasılık) teknolojik becerisi olan medeniyetler gelişmiş olsun (henüz Drake denemi ileri sürülmediğinden, Fermi nin argümanı kestirmeden bir varsayımla ilerliyordu! Ama daha sonraki analizler de temelde buna yakın sonuçlar verecektir.) Bu 1000 medeniyet Samanyolu nun 12 milyar yıllık ömrü boyunca farklı zamanlarda ortaya çıkmış olsun. Bu durumda, ortalama 12 milyon yılda 1 adet teknolojik medeniyet doğuyor diyebiliriz. (12 milyar / 1000 = 12 milyon) Bunun bir diğer anlamı da bizden önceki bu tür bir medeniyet 12 milyon yıl önce ortaya çıkmış olmalıdır. Bu rakam, «kısa yaşam süresi» hipotezine somut bir anlam yüklemektedir: Medeniyetler milyonlarca yıl sürmüş olabilirler mi? Tipik medeniyetler milyonlarca yıl yaşında değilse, binler mertebesinde medeniyetlerin doğumundan bahsediyorsak, şu anda çevremizde (Samanyolu içinde) bizimle hemzaman bir medeniyet beklememeliyiz! Yani Samanyolu nda bizden başka bir hem-zaman medeniyet yoktur!

8 RESULTS FROM FERMı-TYPE ANAYSıS: 1.We know of no reason why life cannot exist elsewhere. 2. We can "Do The Experiment" to find out if there is life out there, on a limited basis: A. We have not found it yet in the solar system. B. We have not found it via radio communication. C. We did find many other solar systems. D. Interstellar Travel is expensive,(if some new solution inside physics is found). E. We have no hard evidence for aliens neither now nor having been here in the past. 3.We can speculate about the possibilities, but must always remain within the hard physical realities, even if those hard realities are contrary to what we would want to believe.

Colors encode a person s status: blue for ignorants, who have not heard the rumor; red for spreaders of the rumor; purple for stiflers, who know the rumor but have lost interest in it. Each white vertical link indicates an encounter between two randomly selected individuals. Spreaders communicate the rumor to ignorants, turning them into spreaders; when two spreaders meet, both become stiflers; a spreader who meets a stifler also becomes a stifler. The process begins with a single spreader in a sea of ignorants. More spreaders are recruited, but by the end they have all become stiflers. Meanwhile, 7 of the 30 individuals pass through the entire simulation without ever hearing the rumor.

If the width of each row and column is made proportional to the number of members in the corresponding subpopulation (ignorants, spreaders and stiflers), then choosing two individuals at random is equivalent to choosing a point at random within the matrix; which of the nine boxes the point lies within determines what happens next. The three assignment statements within each box (the left arrow is usually read as gets or becomes ) indicate changes in the size of each subpopulation. Note that two of the nine boxes represent ignorantspreader interactions, and two more designate spreader-stifler encounters, but there is only one box for spreader-spreader meetings.

Each dot represents a single run of the rumor program, showing both how long the rumor survived and how many people remained ignorant of it at the end. The distribution of ignorants is about the same whether the rumor dies after 500 encounters or lasts for more than 1,000. But in the upper lefthand corner are a few exceptional cases (colored orange for emphasis) of rumors that died in infancy and reached very few people.

19 THE NEW SOLUTıON TO FERMı S PARADOX: (iv) We might be in the still-undiscovered 20% part of civilizations for the supercivilization discovering the galaxy! OR (v) We are destined to be the first supercivilizaion to discover the Milky Way! If we are going to «conquer» the Galaxy, we will probably give up after discovering the 80% of it.

24 THE TRESHOLD "We stand on a great threshold in the human history of space exploration." Dr. Sara Seager ( Professor of Planetary Science, Professor of Physics, Class of 1941; Professor Massachusetts Institute of Technology) before the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology/ United States House of Representatives December 4, 2013 Mr. Chairman and Members of the Committee, thank you for the opportunity to appear today to discuss astrobiology and the search for biosignatures in our Solar System and beyond. We stand on a great threshold in the human history of space exploration. On the one side of this threshold, we know with certainty that planets orbiting stars other than the Sun exist and are common. These worlds beyond our Solar System are called exoplanets, and astronomers have found (statistically speaking) that every star in our Milky Way Galaxy has at least one planet. NASA's Kepler space telescope has found that approximately one in five Sun-like stars should host an Earth-size exoplanet in the star's habitable zone, the region around the star that is not too hot, not too cold, but just right for life. On the other side of this great threshold lies the robust identification of Earth-like exoplanets with habitable conditions, and with signs of life inferred by the detection of "biosignature gases" in exoplanetary atmospheres. If life is prevalent in our neighborhood of the Galaxy, it is within our resources and technological reach to be the first generation in human history to finally cross this threshold, and to learn if there is life of any kind beyond Earth.
