5 GYPSY GIRL AND MONA LISA Turizmde müzeciliğin önemini söylemeye bile gerek yok. Türkiye nin son yıllarda müzecilik alanında attığı adımlar da ortada. Yine de, itiraf etmeliyim ki, TÜRSAB olarak o çabaların odak noktasında yer almış olsak bile, zenginliğimizin çok da farkında değilmişim. Hatta belki değilmişiz. Çabalara bir katkı olarak MÜZE adında bir dergi yayınlanmasına karar verdiğimizde, bir dizi soruyla karşılaştık. Konu sıkıntısı yaşanır mıydı? Müzecilik kimin, ne kadar ilgisini çekerdi? Dergi üçüncü sayısıyla elinizde. Bu soruların yanıtlarını veriyor. Verirken de Anadolu nun tarihi, kültürel zenginliğinin nasıl uçsuz bucaksız olduğunu gösteriyor. İşte Zeugma örneği. Roma İmparatorluğu nun dördüncü büyük / önemli kentinin mirası bir müzede hayat buldu. Gaziantep te açılan Zeugma Mozaik Müzesi, eğer tanıtıp duyurmayı da başarırsak, yüzbinleri kendisine çekecek. ÇİNGENE KIZI VE MONA LISA Başaran Ulusoy The importance of museums for the tourism sector is self-evident. The improvements accomplished by Turkey in recent years with regard to the management of its museums are also obvious. However, I have to admit that, although from the very outset, TÜRSAB was actively involved as a main actor in these rejuvenation efforts, I was not fully aware of the amazing dimensions of our wealth in terms of historical heritage. Or even, we were not As we were deciding, in order to support those efforts, to launch this publication devoted to museums, we were faced with a series of questions. Would there be a scarcity of themes to tackle? How far and which type of public would be interested in the subject matter? At this moment, you are holding the third issue of MÜZE DERGİ in your hands, providing a plethora of answers to the above questions. While doing so, it shows at the same time, the tremendous extent of the Anatolian historic and cultural heritage. Let us dwell upon the example of Zeugma. The legacy of the fourth largest and important city of the Roman Empire was brought back to life at the newly inaugurated Zeugma Museum of Mosaics in Gaziantep. Through an adequate introduction, the museum will reach the point of attracting thousands of guests and help insert Gaziantep on the map of major tourist destinations in Turkey. Those who visited the Louvre in Paris are familiar with the sight of the waiting lines forming in front of the Mona Lisa painting and consisting of visitors from around the world. Although, most of its departments are full of visitors at all times, no other hall of the Louvre is as crowded as the one housing the Mona Lisa. The Gypsy Girl mosaic of Zeugma, exerts an impact as strong as Mona Lisa on its admirers. But, will she be as fortunate as Mona Lisa in having long waiting lines in front of her? Yes probably, and I repeat, if we succeed in introducing her properly to the world!

10 odrum, yalnızca Muğla nın ve Ege nin değil tüm Türkiye nin çekim merkezi gibi. Ama, sadece günümüzde değil... Son 30 yılda da değil... Binlerce yıldır böyle. Gündoğan yakınlarındaki Peynir Çiçeği Mağarası nda bulunan taş ve bronz kalıntılar, bölgede yaşamın Bakır Çağı na, yani M.Ö lere kadar uzandığını gösteriyor. Heredot un yazılarından, ilk kentin de M.Ö yıllarında bugünkü kalenin bulunduğu yerde kurulduğunu öğreniyoruz. M.Ö. 4 üncü yüzyıldan itibaren altın yıllarını yaşayan ve antik çağda Halicarnassos olarak anılan şehir, Karya ya 24 yıl süreyle başkentlik etmiş. Dönemin en gelişmiş uygarlıklarından biri olan Karyalılar, arkalarında bir de dünyanın yedi harikası ndan birini bırakmış. Yani günümüze kadar uzanan mozole sözcüğünün kaynağı, Kral Maussollos un anıt mezarını. 10 Bodrum is like the attraction centre, not only of Muğla or the Aegean, but of whole Turkey. This is true, not only for our time or for the last 30 years, but it was the case for thousands of years. The stone and bronze artefacts discovered in the Peynir Çiçeği cave point to civilization on the peninsula as far back as 5,000 years ago, during the Copper Age. The father of history Herodotus, a native of Bodrum, estimated that the history of his birthplace dated to the first millennium BC, that the first town was established then at the site of the current castle. Bodrum, Halicarnassos with its ancient name, which experienced its golden age from the 4 th century BC onwards, was the capital city of the Carian civilization for 24 years. Bearers of one the leading civilizations of their time, the Carians erected a funeral monument, the Mauseleion, which was going to take its glorious place among the Seven Wonders of the Antique World, for their King Maussollos, whose name is at the origin of the word mausoleum, meaning funeral monument.

Zaman hızla geçip, Antik Çağ ın büyük uygarlıkları tarihin tozlu sayfalarında yer alırken, Ortaçağ Avrupası nın en önemli aktörlerinden Hıristiyan şövalyeler de Bodrum un önemini fark etti. Kendilerini Hıristiyanlık inancının koruyucusu ilan eden Saint Jean şövalyeleri, 1402 de Sultan Mehmet Çelebi den izin alarak kalenin inşasına başladı. Şövalyeler, iddialarını da, Kral Maussollos un dillere destan mezarının taşlarını kullanarak gösterdi. Anıt mezardan getirilen taş bloklarla, yüksekliği 47.5 metreye ulaşan, 180x185 metre ebatlarındaki kale ortaya çıktı. Şövalyeler, kalenin denize hakim kulelerine, içlerindeki her grubun geldiği ülkenin adını verdi: İngiliz, Fransız, İtalyan, İspanyol kuleleriyle Yılanlı Kule. Taş ve ahşap işçiliğinin en güzel örnekleriyle süslenen kale 16 ncı yüzyılda Osmanlılar ın eline geçti ve bir dönem hapishane olarak kullanıldı yılında Fransızlar tarafından bombalanan ve yıllarca kaderine terk edilen kale, 1964 yılında müzeye dönüştürüldü. Şimdi Türkiye nin tek sualtı arkeoloji müzesi olma unvanını taşıyan bu müze, birbirinden önemli binlerce kara ve sualtı bulgusunu içinde barındırıyor. Dünyanın en geniş koleksiyonu! Müzenin ziyaretçileri, şövalyelerin ejderha, eşit kollu ve klasik haçlarla süslediği 7 kapıdan geçerek iç kale bölümüne ulaşıyor. Bu bölüm, dünyanın en büyük amfora koleksiyonuna ev sahipliği yapıyor. Antik Dönem de şarap, zeytinyağı ve kuru gıda maddelerinin taşınıp depolanmasında kullanılan bu iki kulplu, sivri dipli testiler, kullanıldıkları dönemin ticari ve sosyal hayatını anlatan önemli ipuçlarını barındırıyor. Burada, M.Ö yılları arasında üretilen çeşitli amfora örnekleri ziyaretçilerle buluşuyor. Antik Çağ ticaretinin bel kemiği 12 Age of the Knights As the civilizations of the Antique Age took their place in the dusty pages of history, the Christian Knights, among the principal actors of medieval Europe, discovered the strategic merit of Bodrum. Proclaiming themselves protectors of the Christian belief, the St. John Knights launched there the construction of the St. Peter Castle in 1402, upon an authorization granted by the ruler of the Ottoman Empire, Sultan Mehmet Çelebi. They used stone blocks from the ruins of the famous Mauseleion (partially destroyed in an earthquake on 8 th August 1304) in the construction, eventually erecting a 47,5 meters high fortress covering an area of 180x185 meters. They gave the names of their countries of origin to the castle s high-towers overlooking the sea: French, English, Italian, Spanish Towers and the Serpentine Tower. Adorned with the most beautiful specimen of stone carving and wood craftsmanship, the fortress was conquered by the Ottomans in the 16 th century. It served as a prison during the late Ottoman period and was bombed by the French in 1915, during the First World War. In 1964, the Bodrum Castle was restored and inaugurated as a museum. Turkey s unique museum of underwater archaeology, it houses a vast number of terrestrial and underwater artefacts.

14 sayılan, bu zarif ama dayanıklı testi türünün nasıl şekillendirildiği, nasıl fırınlandığı gibi üretim aşamaları ile içlerinde nelerin saklandığı, gemilerde nasıl depolandığı çizimlerle anlatılıyor. Ziyaretçiler kalenin sağına döndüklerinde, Antik Çağın, Ortaçağ şövalyelerinin ve Osmanlı nın aynı mekanda iç içe geçen dünyalarına tanıklık etme fırsatı buluyor. Gotik mimarinin en güzel örneklerinden biri olan şapelin duvarları, Mausoleion dan getirilen yeşil taşlarla örülmüş. Görkemli taş işçiliği ile dikkat çeken şapelin köşe taşlarına ise bu bölümün yapımına-onarımına katkıda bulunan şövalyelerin armaları işlenmiş. Kalenin Osmanlılar tarafından fethinden sonra, yanına minareler ilave edilen bu bölüm camiye dönüştürülmüş. Birkaç dakikada tarih yolculuğu Üç ayrı zaman dilimi ve inanç sisteminin iç içe geçtiği şapelden çıkıp, sağa doğru ilerlendiğinde kulelere ulaşılıyor. Bu küçük yolculuğa, duvar kenarında sergilenen ostotekler (ölülerin küllerinin saklandığı kaplar) eşlik ediyor. M.Ö. 1 ve M.S. 2 nci yüzyıla tarihlenen bu kaplar üzerlerindeki, Eros, Zeus, Medusa başları ve öbür dünya tasvirleriyle World s largest collection! Visitors of the museum reach the inner castle, after crossing 7 gates, decorated with dragon figures, classical crosses and equal-armed crosses. That section is home to the world s largest collection of amphorae. Amphorae (amphoras) are this type of elegant vase-shaped earthenware vessels with two handles and a sharp-pointed bottom, used in vast numbers to transport and store various products, both liquid and dry, grapes, wine, olive oil, olives, grain, fish and other commodities in the Mediterranean world during the Antique Age and later the Roman period. They deliver us important clues as to the commercial and social life of their era. The production process of the amphora, how it was shaped, how it was dried and hardened in the furnace and what it was used for, the way they were stored on ships etc. is explained on several signboard charts with graphics. Entering the right wing of the castle, the guests are witnessing the worlds of the Antique Age, the Knights of the Middle Age and the Ottomans interpenetrating each other in the same area. 16 BODRUM dan BRITISH MUSEUM a Kral Maussollos M.Ö. 353 yılında bir anıt mezarın yapılması talimatını verdi. Yapımına Maussollos tarafından başlanan 32x38 metre ebatlarındaki devasa anıt mezarın inşaası Kraliçe II. Artemisia döneminde bitirildi. Bu yapının yüksekliği 40 metreyi aşıyor, mezar odası 4 yanı heykellerle çevrili bir kaidenin üzerinde duruyor, yapıyı piramit bir tavan örtüyordu. Bu tavanın üzerinde ise 4 atlı bir savaş arabası bulunuyordu. Mimar Pytheos tarafından yapılan ve tarihçilere göre bin 500 yıl ayakta kalan yapı, büyük bir depremle yıkılmıştı. Bu depremden geriye kalan taş bloklar Bodrum Kalesi nin inşasında kullanıldı. Geriye kalan parçaları ise 1800 lü yıllarda Anadolu topraklarında kazı faaliyetine girişen İngiliz arkeologlar tarafından Londra daki British Museum a taşındı. Müzede bu muhteşem anıtın maketi ve çizimleri sergileniyor. From Bodrum to the British Museum King Maussollos, the Satrap of Caria ordered the construction of a funeral monument in 353 B.C. The construction of the 32x38 meters large giant monument was completed under the reign of Queen Artemisia II of Caria. The burial chamber of the 40 meters high monument was raised on a high podium surrounded at its 4 flanks by statues. The 21 stepped roof was crowned by a pyramidal rooftop based on 36 ionic columns. Statues of Maussollos and Artemisia, riding a chariot drawn by four horses from the crest of that pyramid are now to be found at the British Museum. The Mauseleion, built by architect Pytheos remained intact for 1500 years until it was partially destroyed by an earthquake in the 14 th century and demolished by the Knights of Rhodes who used its stone blocks in the construction of the Bodrum Fortress (St. Peter Castle). The friezes were removed to the British Museum in 1856, by British archaeologists excavating in Turkey. Therefore, the Bodrum Castle Underwater Archaeology Museum houses only drawings and scale models of the Mauseleion, one of the Seven Wonders of the Antique World. 17 dikkat çekiyor. Bu yolun sonunda Antik Çağ ın en önemli eserlerinden olan Mausoleion un maketlerinin bulunduğu alana ulaşılıyor. Yolculuğun devamında ziyaretçiler, Antik Çağ ın zarif cam işçiliği örneklerinin sergilendiği Cam Batığı Salonu yla karşılaşıyor. Salonun sağında yer alan vitrinlerde, M.Ö. 16 ncı yüzyıla ait Miken cam boncuk dizileri ve Kaş taki Uluburun Batığı ndan çıkartılan aynı döneme ait cam külçeleri yan yana sergileniyor. Soldaki vitrinlerde ise Stratonikeia ve Kaunos gibi antik şehir kazılarında elde edilen cam buluntular yer alıyor. Ancak Cam Batığı Salonu da müze ziyaretçilerine unutulmaz bir sürpriz de hazırlıyor. Salonda, dünya sualtı arkeolojisinin en önemli eserlerinden biri olan Serçe Limanı Batığı da sergileniyor. M.Ö. 10 uncu yüzyıla tarihlenen bu gemi kalıntısı, Marmaris yakınlarındaki Serçe Koyu nda yılları arasında yapılan sualtı kazı çalışmaları sonucu gün ışığına çıkartılmış. Fatimi Limanları ndan aldığı hurda cam ile Bizans sularında seyrederken battığı düşünülen bu geminin içinden çıkan cam eserler ve mürettebatın eşyaları da müzenin ziyaretçilerini antik çağ denizcilerinin hayatına götürüyor. Sikke ve mücevherat salonu İtalyan Kulesi nin alt katında ise Sikke ve Mücevherat Salonu yer alıyor. Değiş tokuş sisteminin yarattığı zorluklarla başa çıkmak için Lidyalılar tarafından icat edilen ve sikke adı verilen madeni paralar burada sıra dışı bir yöntemle sergileniyor. Bu salonda, sadece M.Ö. 6 ncı yüzyıldan M.Ö.2 nci yüzyıla kadar uzanan dönemde basılan altın ve gümüş paralar sergilenmekle kalmıyor, paranın satın alma gücü with green stones stemming from the ruins of Mauselion (see above). The cornerstones of the chapel, standing out with its magnificent stone carving workmanship, are decorated with coats of arms of the knights who contributed to its construction and restoration. During the Ottoman period that section was supplemented with minarets and converted into a mosque. Thus, the particular marks of all three different eras and belief systems are visible in an intertwined togetherness at this chapel. Strolling through history in a matter of minutes Leaving the chapel and proceeding to the right, one reaches the towers. On the way are displayed ostoteks (containers used for preserving the ashes of the deceased) decorated with Eros, Zeus, Medusa heads and figures depicting the world after-death, originating from 1 st century BC to 2 nd century AD period. At the end of this road, are displayed scale model renditions of the Mauseleion, one of the seven wonders of the Antique world. Continuing their tour of the museum, the visitors arrive at the Glass Shipwreck Hall where one can admire the finest samples of glass craftsmanship of the Antique Age. In the display units on the right wing of the hall, the glass bead strings from the Mycenaean civilization (16 th century BC) and the glass chunks from the same period found on the Lycian Uluburun shipwreck at Kaş, are displayed side by side. Bu salonda ayrıca Mausoleion kazısında bulunan birbirinden kıymetli mücevherat da sergileniyor. Bu bölümde, her biri arkeoloji ve sanat tarihi açısından büyük önem taşıyan kolyeler ve diademler (taçlar) dikkat çekiyor. Diademlere ayrılan vitrinde üzeri zeytin ve defne yaprağı şeklinde kesilmiş altın parçalar sergileniyor. Karyalı Prenses ya da Kraliçe Ada Yapının Baltalı Kule olarak anılan bölümünde ise, ziyaretçileri Antik Çağ da Muğla bölgesinin tümüne hükmeden büyük bir kraliçe bekliyor. Karyalı Prenses Salonu nda, antik dünyanın en güçlü kadınlarından biri olan Kraliçe Ada, ham ipekten dikilmiş açık renkli elbisesiyle ve makyajıyla ziyaretçilerini karşılıyor. Bu görkemli karşılamanın öyküsü ise 1989 da Bodrum da bir temel kazısı sırasında ortaya çıkartılan bir lahitle başlıyor. Kısacası, Bodrum Sualtı Arkeoloji Müzesi nin her salonu, hatta her duvarı bile izleyicilerine bambaşka öyküler anlatıyor. An unforgettable surprise for the visitors of the Glass Shipwreck Hall is the presence there of the Glass Wreck of Serçe Limanı, an early 11 th century shipwreck excavated from sea bottom at Serçe Limanı, a natural harbour on the Turkish coast near Marmaris during the summers of 1977 through It is esteemed that the ship sunk while sailing in Byzantine waters, transporting glass weights for weighing coins and glass chunks originating from the southern shores of the Mediterranean, from the Moslem Fatimids. The glass articles from the ship and the belongings of the ship s crew on display in this hall are the object of the visitors keen interest. Coins and Jewellery Hall The Coins and Jewellery Hall is located on the ground floor of the Italian tower. Difficulties incurred during the swap trade instigated the Lydians to invent the metallic money known as coins. Golden and silver coins originating from 6 th to 2 nd centuries are exhibited here along with charts indicating their corresponding purchasing powers. For instance, on a tag placed under a large coin from the 2 nd century BC, a tetra drachmae (equal to 4 silver coins- a drachma being a silver

20 coin), it is indicated that the price to be paid for an ox was around 20 tetra drachmae. Precious jewellery originating from excavations at the ruins of Mauseleion, pieces bearing great value from the stand of archaeology and art history, necklaces, diadems are equally on display in this hall; gold leaves cut in the form of olive and laurel leaves are placed alongside diadems in the display cabinets. Ada, Carian Princess or Queen Baltalı Tower (Tower of Axes), situated at the highest point of the castle, houses the Carian Princess Hall, decorated with Carian battleaxes, Zeus figures and Medusa heads, where the visitors are welcomed by a queen who ruled over the Muğla region in the Antique Age, Princess Ada, one of the most powerful ladies of the Antique world, in her raw silk costume and with make-up. In 1989 a sarcophagus was found while digging foundations at a construction site outside Bodrum. In this sarcophagus was lying the skeleton of a woman, whose dying age was determined as 44, dressed up in a gold inlaid raw silk garment and wearing precious jewellery. The Bodrum Museum officials named her the Carian Princess. Following an in-depth examination of her skull and her jewellery by Manchester University scholars, she was identified as Princess Ada, who was also the adoptive mother of Alexander the Great. The University of Manchester plastered the skeleton of Princess to her state while living and she is now exhibited along with her jewellery in a niche in the hall, where also her life story is depicted on a chart in strip cartoon technique and, a documentary on the plastering work performed by Manchester University is shown on video screens. In short, the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology each hall, each wall reveals a variety of different stories to its visitors. The giant museum, located at London s city centre, houses a vast variety of works of art bearing the potential of straining Great Britain s relations with almost every country in the world. The tension s cause is that a large majority of the artefacts on display here, were removed from their countries of origin and brought thousands of kilometres away to the British Museum. The civilization of Ancient Egypt, with the mummies of its principal pharaohs, its statues, its treasures of jewellery and hieroglyph tablets keeping history s records, is almost completely revived here with its most essential components. The cultural heritages of Nigeria, Sudan and even Indonesia are all present... One of the most prestigious departments of the museum is also the one with the pieces hurting the most our Turkish souls, starting from parts of the Artemision (Temple of Artemis) of Ephesus, all the way to the vestiges, originating from Bodrum, of the Mauseleion, the famous funeral monument of Carian King Maussollos. Free entrance gesture The entrance to the British Museum is free of charge, as if it were a generosity towards the citizens of countries coming all the way to London to see their own cultural heritage; as if this gesture conveyed the message: We removed your heritage from its roots, but don t worry, you don t have to pay to see it here! Empire on which the sun never sets, the period where Asia and Africa were considered backyard of the Empire. The British Museum was established in 1753, largely based on the collections of the physician and scientist Sir Hans Sloane ( ). During the course of his lifetime Sloane gathered an enviable collection of curiosities and, not wishing to see his collection broken up after death, he bequeathed it to King George II, for the nation, for the princely sum of 20 thousand Pounds. At that time, Sloane s collection consisted of around 71,000 objects of all kinds including some 40,000 printed books, 7,000 manuscripts, extensive natural history specimens including 337 volumes of dried plants, prints and drawings including those by Albrecht Dürer and antiquities from Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Ancient Near and Far East and the Americas. On 7 June 1753, King George II gave his formal assent to the Act of Parliament which established the British Museum. The foundation collections included many of the most treasured books now in the British Library including the Lindisfarne Gospels and the sole surviving manuscript of 11 th century Old English epic poem Beowulf. The British Museum was the first of a new kind of museum-national, belonging to neither church nor king, freely open to the public and aiming to collect everything. The body of trustees decided on a converted 17 th -century mansion, Montagu House, as a location for the museum, which it bought from the Montagu family for 20 thousand Pounds. The Trustees rejected Buckingham House, on the site now occupied by Buckingham Palace, on the grounds of cost and the unsuitability of its location. The museum first opened to the public on 15 January 1759 in the Montagu House in Bloomsbury, on the site of the current museum building. In 1772 the Museum acquired its first antiquities of note; British Ambassador to Naples, Sir William Hamilton s ( ) collection of Greek vases. From 1778 a display of objects from the South Seas brought back from the round-the-world voyages of Captain James Cook and the travels of other explorers fascinated visitors with a glimpse of previously unknown lands. British Museum s expansion over the following two and a half centuries was largely a result of an expanding British colonial footprint. While the language and culture of the Empire on which the sun never sets was spreading out to four corners of the world, the cultural and artistic treasures of countries under British colonial rule were being transferred to the British Museum. The museum was expanding constantly through various acquisitions and donations and its reputation was growing. People from all parts of Britain were rushing into the museum to admire treasures of art, statues, jewellery and drawings depicting far away countries, originating from places and cultures whose existence they could not even imagine. Yunanistan topraklarından başlayan kültür ve tarih talanı daha sonra diğer Osmanlı topraklarına uzandı. Lord Thomas Bruce Elgin tarihleri arasında Atina Akropolis teki Parthenon dan Elgin Mermerleri olarak da anılan büyük heykel koleksiyonunu İngiltere ye getirdi yılında Birleşik Krallık tarafından satın alınan Elgin Mermerleri, British Museum da kendileri için özel olarak inşa edilen Duveen Gallery de teşhir edilmeye başlandı. Müzenin sahip olduğu eserler hızla artınca bina yetersiz gelmeye başladı. Nereid ve Payava Anıtlarının da aralarında bulunduğu onlarca paha biçilmez eseri ülkesine taşıdı yılında Sir Charles Newton başkanlığındaki bir başka ekip, M.Ö. 4 üncü yüzyılda bugünkü Bodrum yakınlarında inşa edilen ve dünyanın 7 harikasından biri kabul edilen Mausoleion kalıntılarının bir bölümünü ülkesine götürdü. Ancak Osmanlı topraklarındaki tarih talanı bununla da sınırlı kalmadı. Musul yakınlarındaki Ninova dan Efes teki Artemis Tapınağı na sayısız eser İngiltere ye taşındı. Müzenin sahip olduğu eser sayısı hızla artarken yılları arasında binaya iki kanat daha eklendi. Bina, Yeni Gine, Madagaskar, Guatemala, Endonezya, Mısır ve Sudan gibi ülkelerde yaptığı kazılarda her geçen gün daha da görkemli bir hal aldı. Günümüzde 75 bin metre kare sergileme alanda hizmet veren müze, yılda 6 milyondan fazla turisti ağırlıyor. Sadece Mısır ve Sudan Koleksiyonları 110 bin parçayı aşan müze, dünyanın en önemli kültür ve sanat harikalarını bünyesinde bulunduruyor. 27 Archaeology s greatest achievement The Museum owned a great number of amazing pieces. However, the foundations for an extensive collection of sculpture began to be laid in the early 19 th century, with Greek, Roman and Egyptian artefacts. An ancient Egyptian stele inscribed with a decree issued in 196 BC on behalf of King Ptolemy V, discovered in 1799 near the town of Rashid (Rosetta) in the Nile Delta by a French soldier during Napoleon s expedition to Egypt, led to a major breakthrough in archaeology. The Rosetta Stone, an ancient Egyptian stele inscribed in three scripts: Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, Demotic script (popular language in Ancient Egypt), and Ancient Greek, proved to be a most valuable tool for the deciphering of hieroglyphs. Because it presents essentially the same text in all three scripts, it provided the key to the modern understanding of Egyptian hieroglyphs. The Rosetta Stone, a 114 centimetres high, 72 cm wide, and 28 cm thick stone of black granite, paved the way to the inception of Egyptology as a science. Meanwhile, British troops defeated the French in Egypt in 1801, and the original stone came into British possession under the Capitulation of Alexandria. Transported to London, it has been on public display at the British Museum since It is the most-visited object in the British Museum. Gifts and purchases from Henry Salt, British Consul General in Egypt, beginning with the Colossal bust of Ramesses II the Great in 1818, laid the foundations of the collection of Egyptian Monumental Sculpture. Weighing 7 tons, this fragment of his statue was cut from a single block of two-coloured granite. He is shown wearing the striped nemes head-dress surmounted by a cobra diadem. It was retrieved from the mortuary temple of Ramesses at Thebes (the Ramesseum ) in The arrival of the head in England in 1818 not only aroused widespread interest by the public and the scientific community, but inspired poets like Percy Bysshe Shelley to write poetry glorifying Ancient Egypt. Ottoman lands were next The interest manifested towards Ancient Egyptian art, prompted the British to expedite their archaeological activity in the East. The plundering started in Greece spread out to other parts of the Ottoman Empire. In 1806, Lord Thomas Bruce, 7 th Earl of Elgin, Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1799 to 1803 removed the large collection of marble sculptures from the Parthenon on the Acropolis in Athens and transferred them to the UK. In 1816 these masterpieces of western art, were acquired by The British Museum by Act of Parliament and deposited in the museum thereafter at the Duveen Gallery built especially for the Elgin Marbles. With the progressive extension of collections, the construction of new wings became indispensable. The famous circular Reading Room was designed and built by neoclassical architect Sir Sydney Smirke from a sketch drawn by Sir Anthony Panizzi, Chief Librarian at the British Museum Library opened in In 1840 the Museum became involved in its first overseas excavations with Charles Fellows s expedition to the Antique settlement of Xanthos near Antalya Kınık in Turkey. 29 among them the priceless Nereid and Payava monuments. In 1857 Charles Newton was to discover the 4 th century BC Mausoleum of Halicarnassos, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and equally transferred various treasures, among them, friezes from the Mauseleion and statues of King Maussollos and Queen Artemisia, riding a chariot drawn by four horses from the crest of the monument to the British Museum. The dilapidation was continuing through further excavations in other parts of Ottoman territory. Several valuable pieces from the Nineveh Assyrian settlement near Mosul and the Temple of Artemis at Ephesos were transferred to Britain. Two more wings were added to the building between 1900 and Ethnographical fieldwork was carried out in places as diverse as New Guinea, Madagascar, Romania, Guatemala and Indonesia and there were excavations in the Near East, Egypt, and Sudan, adding to the museum s majesty. Today, the British Museum has grown to become one of the largest museums in the world, covering an area of over 75,000 m 2 of exhibition space, hosting yearly over 6 million tourists. The Department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan alone houses over 110,000 objects. The museum is a monument sheltering world s most outstanding marvels of culture and art. Against the background of intense controversy over the acquisition circumstances of a large portion of its treasures and calls for their restitution to their countries of origin, the British Museum continues to attract world s attention as a cosmopolitan Temple of Art and Culture. Up to this date, only Tasmania s (region in Australia) claim was brought to a successful conclusion, resulting in the restitution of the fossilized human body parts belonging to the Aborigines to their country of origin.
