1 Uzaklar II Sails Around the Edge of the World Uzaklar II Dünyan n Ucu ndan Geçti irst, a world tour on board Fthe boat named Uzaklar between 1992 and 1997, and then a new voyage that started in October 2008 with the aim to become the first Turkish sailor to Cape Horn We are talking about Osman Atasoy. Atasoy succeeded in sailing around the Cape Horn, the southern-most tip of South America and also known as the Everest of the Seven Seas and the edge of the world, with his girlfriend, Sibel Karasu, a professional diver and underwater trainer, on board his 14-meter Uzaklar II boat. Facing many challenges on their way to Cape Horn through Gibraltar, Canary Islands, Brazil and Argentina, Atasoy and Karasu experience stressful times due to the tsunami that was generated after the recent powerful earthquake in Japan. Stating that there was a little control station belonging to the Chilean navy right beneath the lighthouse at Cape Horn and that a naval soldier named Miguel lived at this station with his wife and son, Atasoy tells about his experiences in his logbook on his website: We heard Miguel s voice on channel 16 of the radio in the morning. He kept on yelling Securite, Securite... The only things we could understand were the earthquake and the tsunami alarm. We only knew that the tsunami was on its way to South America. We were considering staying and resting for a few days at this secluded cove after sailing around the Cape Horn. It was not so nice to face the tsunami threat. The cove we were in is closed towards the west. So we did not think that the tsunami would make its way to the cove. But, because we had never experienced such a thing before, we didn t know what it would do. We hoped we did not face a bad surprise. According to the tsunami alarm given by the Chilean navy, the waves would reach our location after midnight. We started waiting for tsunami at the cove located some 10 miles to the north of Cape Horn. 2 wind increased. Even though the sails were furled securely, rigging was vibrating tremendously. From time to time we reached our heads out the hatch to see what is happening around. We could see nothing but snowflakes flying in the dead of the night. It seemed like the wind has brought the cold climate of Antarctica here. The cold would chill us to the bone as we made our way to the forecastle deck to check the stopper. I had never seen such a cold weather for years. I could see that my hands were almost frozen when I returned the cabin. We had received many s from Turkey thanks to the SSB radio. All warned us to be alert to the tsunami risk, for the earthquake was of the highest magnitude ever seen to date, and that the tsunami would be equally devastating. Our concerns increased more as we read them. We tried to guess what would happen when the tsunami arrived. The waters would recede first and then hit with all its speed. The depth of the cove was around 8 meters. Would Uzaklar II first hit the bottom and then rise on the waves? What would happen? We couldn t help thinking many unfavorable probabilities. There was nothing to do other than waiting and seeing. I felt that my stress had lessened around the midnight. Or, was it the alcohol I had drunk in the evening that calmed me down? But, even though she had not drunk, Sibel also looked quite calm. I think we had accepted our fate. We had the same calmness of people who bow to the inevitable. We didn t sleep a wink during the night, ready to meet any bad probability. We would immediately respond if the boat would drag anchor or wind changed direction. But, the current situation was different. What could we do against a tsunami that swallows huge ports, wipes villages off the map? What could we do? I changed my clothes and walked to the bed. It would not worth to be sleepless in vain! When I woke up in the morning, I found Sibel talking on the radio. She came to me saying that there was no tsunami threat anymore. Then she added: Shall I make the tea?... Why Cape Horn? Cape Horn had been the only alternative for sailing boats to pass from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean until the opening of the Panama Canal in Not all ships could pass through the Strait, which Magellan had discovered in 1520 and is known as the Strait of Magellan, due to both strong winds and the ban imposed by Spain. The horn had been first passed by the Dutch sailors Willem Cornelisz Schouten and Jakob Le Maire on January 29, Following this attempt of the Dutch sailors, sailing boats began to follow this route. 3 Water Transfer Between Basins Havzalararas Su Transferi solution has been produced for Athe Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) that has suffered water shortage since the 1960s; water will be transferred from Turkey by means of a pipeline. Among main causes of water shortage in the TRNC are uncontrolled use of sources, increasing population, polluted sources, increased vaporization, and salination of coastal aquifers due to excessive utilization of underground waters. According to recent data, of the annual utilizable water amount of million cubic meters, 89.1 million cubic meter go to underground waters, 1.4 million cubic meters to sources, and 27 million cubic meters to rivers in the TRNC. 79% of the water in the country is used for agricultural purposes, 13% for domestic use, and 8% for industrial use. Water is mainly obtained from coastal aquifers and the Guzelyurt Aquifer, the biggest aquifer on the island, is fed by the Trodos mountains. Studies conducted show that the TRNC has a total water requirement of million cubic meters. Taking into consideration the current utilizable water amount of million cubic meters, it is clear that the required water is supplied by means of excessive use of the aquifers. This situation shows that the underground water sources, the most important water source of the TRNC, is threatened with depletion risk in the future. A number of different solutions have been considered to solve the water problem of the TRNC during the course of time, including use of modern irrigation techniques, seawater desalination systems, supply of water on board tankers, and construction of water storage facilities. The idea to transfer water from Turkey was first introduced in the 1990s. Accordingly, water was transported to the TRNC using large water balloons with capacities ranging between 10,000 and 40,000 cubic meters in Approximately 4.1 million cubic meters of water was transported from the Soguksu water source located in the Ayvacik town of Anamur to the Kumkoy reservoir in the TRNC for 5 years for use as domestic water. However, this project came to an end by 2002 due to some technical problems. Final Solution: Pipeline The idea to transfer water by means of a pipeline from Turkey to solve water problem of the TRNC is considered the most convenient and practical solution. Within this framework, the foundation of the Alakopru Dam to be constructed in the Anamur town of Mersin was laid by the beginning of March as the most important leg of the TRNC Drinking Water Supply Project that will transfer total of 75 million cubic meters of water to the TRNC annually. The pipeline will be laid some 250 meters depth and have a length of 78 km under the sea, 23 km under the ground in Turkey and 3.2 km under the ground in the TRNC, with a total length of km. The project is scheduled to be completed in Total of 2.83 cubic meters of water will be transferred per second through the pipeline, which is the first in the world. The project will meet the water requirements of the TRNC and minimize excessive use of the underground waters in the country. What is more important, the TRNC will have clean drinking water, which is currently below world standards. Geçmifl y llarda yap lan çal flmalarda, KKTC nin toplam su ihtiyac n n milyon metre küp oldu u belirtiliyor. Kullan labilir y ll k su miktar n n milyon metre küp oldu u göz önünde bulundurulursa, ihtiyaç duyulan su miktar n n akiferlerin afl r kullan m ile sa land ortada. Bu durumsa, KKTC nin en önemli su kaynaklar olan yeralt su kaynaklar n n k sa bir süre sonra yok olma tehlikesi içinde olabilece ini gösteriyor. Modern sulama tekniklerinin uygulanmas, deniz suyu ar t lmas, tankerle su tafl ma ve su depolama yap lar n n infla edilmesi düflünülen çözüm yollar ndan birkaç tanesi. 5 Logistics Village at Iskenderun Bay Körfez de Lojistik Köy Kuruluyor elalettin Lekesiz, Governor of CHatay, stated that a logistics village would be established in the towns of Iskenderun. Following the meeting, the contract for the Logistics Master Plan Project covering Hatay and Osmaniye was signed by Mr. Lekesiz, Governor of Hatay; Mr. Tennioglu, Deputy Chairman of Iskenderun Chamber of Trade and Industry, and Mr. Serdengecti, Secretary General of Eastern Mediterranean Development Agency. Logistics Companies are Important Stating that the Logistics Master Plan that has the nature of feasibility study for the Logistics Village had been prepared with financial support from the Eastern Mediterranean Development Agency, Halil Sahin, Chairman of the Iskenderun Chamber of Trade and Industry, said, Opinions and recommendations of the companies providing logistics services such as land, rail, air and sea transportation, port services, warehousing and distribution services are considerably important in completion of the project. A logistics village is defined as an area within which all operations relating to national and international haulage of goods, provision of distribution, warehousing, and all other associated services exist. All activities relating to national, international, transit transportation, and distribution of goods need to be carried out a variety of operators within such areas. It is necessary that the village is provided with all required infrastructure. Loading, unloading, handling and weighing services are provided based on a centralized system. There are over 40 logistics villages in 8 countries around Europe. The major ones are located in France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Greece, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Poland, Ukraine, Hungary and Portugal. Approximately 2,400 transportation companies make use of these villages. All logistics villages are located at an average distance of 10 miles from big cities. Among major advantages of the logistics villages are: more efficient logistics chain owing to combining all commercial activities relating to transportation of goods in a single area; optimization of use of vehicles, workforce and warehouses; central management; decrease in total transportation, industrial and personnel costs; increase in transportation turnovers. Having achieved a market share of 49 per cent, Global Port, a per cent subsidiary of Global Investment company, has decided to go public. As a leading port operator in Turkey with modernization investments made in Antalya, Bodrum and Kusadasi ports, as well as with the capacity, volume and tourist number achieved, Global Port has filed an application with the Capital Markets Board and the Istanbul Stock Exchange. The initial public offering is planned to be made with shares with a total nominal value of TRY 50,000,000. In case of receipt of sufficient demand, additional shares with a nominal value of TRY 7,500,000 belonging to Global Investment may also be offered. In case of sale of the additional shares as well, total percentage of the public offering will become 46%. 8 New Port in Izmir zmir Hareketleniyor ids for construction of the BCandarli Port that will be among the top 10 ports in the world once completed will begin to be accepted on March 24. The port located in the Northern Aegean will play a key role in Turkey s opening to foreign markets. With a breakwater length of 800 meters and depth of 40 meters, the Candarli Port will be capable of accommodating vessels up to over 200 thousand dwt. Planned as a main cargo port, Candarli will also become an important competitor against the Greek Port of Piraeus in terms of the transit cargoes in the Izmir- Mediterranean basin. Candarli Port that will be four times larger than the Port of Piraeus is expected to make considerable contributions to the Turkish economy. The project that has been on the agenda of the Turkish government for some 20 years has remained on paper during this period of time due to requirement of considerable investments, environmental concerns and political disputes. Having been shelved due to unfavorable EIA reports twice, the project has once again brought on the agenda as it has gained importance recently.
