3 'S Y E h & İstanbul Byzantium, Constantinople, Istanbul; three magic names that recall the city s glorious past. Byzantium, the city founded by Megarian colonizers 2,600 years ago... Constantinople, built like a second Rome on seven hills by the Emperor Constantine... and Istanbul, the city that links Europe and Asia, the fabulous capital of the Ottoman sultans and the heart of an Empire that stretched from the gates of Vienna to the Persian Gulf. Of Istanbul Lamartine said: «There God, Man, Nature and Art, have together created and placed the most marvellous point of view that the human eye can contemplate on Earth.» Indeed, the setting is superb, with the city rising up from both banks of the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus, the magnificent straits that connect the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara. To this natural beauty man has added as Gautier said; «The most beautiful skyline that undulates between Heaven and Earth.» Istanbul is not only a city with a brilliant past reflected in its buildings, but it is a city full of present day life and colour as well. VISITING THE CITY Few cities are so enticing and so delightful to discover as Istanbul. By looking at a map one can plan one's own tour of the city depending upon the time one has. However, any tour should begin in the old city, the triangle of land between the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus. Within this small area one can see some of the finest monuments of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. No visit to the city is complete without a visit to the Grand Bazaar and a trip up the Bosphorus. 4 the mosques SULTANAHMET CAMİİ : This mosque was built by Sultan Ahmet I in the 17th century, and it is better known as the Blue Mosque because of its beautiful blue tiled interior. It is the only mosque with six minarets, and it is to these and its cascade of cupolas that the mosque owes its wonderful elegance of form. SÜLEYMANİYE CAMİİ : Built in honour of the great sultan, Suleiman the Magnificent, it is one of Istanbul s most splendid mosques. It was built by Turkey s greatest architect, Sinan, between 1550 and The decoration is truly sumptuous with its rich tiles, brilliant stained glass windows and antique columns. FATİH CAMİİ : This mosque of Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror was built ten years after the conquest of Istanbul. It is a mosque of monumental proportions with its many dependencies including a hospice, medrese, hospital, caravanserai, library and baths. EYÜP CAMİİ : Dating from the 15th century, this mosque is built over the tomb of Eyüp, the standard bearer of the Prophet Mohammed, who died in a siege of Istanbul in 670. The tomb is venerated by Moslems and every year it is visited by thousands of pilgrims. On the hill on which the mosque is situated there is a vast and beautiful cemetery. The Mosque of Rustem Pasa

6 Dolmabahçe Mosque BEYAZIT CAMİİ : The Mosque of Beyazıt II is a perfect example of the classical Turkish style. It was built between 1501 and 1505 and contains magnificent jasper columns and a very beautiful mihrab. YENİ CAMİ : The «New Mosque» is situated at one end of the Galata Bridge. It has twin minarets with triple balconies and was built in the 17th century. The imperial box in the mosque is remarkable for its beautiful İznik tile decoration. RÜSTEMPAŞA CAMİİ : This mosque was constructed around 1550 by the architect Sinan. The colours and patterns of the İznik tiles decorating the interior are delightful. Several other mosques are worth visiting such as the ŞEHZADE CAMİİ, built by Sinan; the NURUOSMANİYE CAMİİ, a perfect example of the Turkish baroque; and the MOSQUE OF SULTAN SELİM, attributed to Sinan. r i t (HV iv i W iff The Mosque of Siiieymaniye The Blue Mosque

7 the palaces TOPKAPI SARAYI : This magnificent Oriental Palace is situated on a triangular promontary dominating the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn. It was the residence of the sultans from the 15th to the mid 19th century. The palace is a fascinating collection of buildings built at different times, and is surrounded by immense gardens and an outer wall. Today it is one of the world's richest museums. The former imperial kitchens house the w orld s finest collection of Chinese porcelain and there is a sumptuous display of the sultans' costumes. The Treasury is a breathtaking blaze of jewels. Emeralds, rubies and diamonds adorn turban crests, swords and even tea cups, and there are golden thrones encrusted w ith gems and satins embroidered w ith pearls. The Baghdad Kiosk is magnificently decorated with blue tiles and there is a sanctuary containing the relics of the Prophet Mohammed. Also there are exhibitions of paintings and manuscripts and finally there is the fascinating harem, where all the wives and concubines of the sultans were kept. Open every day, except Tuesday, from to DOLMABAHCE SARAYI : The Palace of Dolmabahge was built by Sultan Abdulmecit in 1854 on the banks of the Bosphorus, and it was the residence of the last Ottoman sultans. The white marble palace is basically of European baroque style w ith oriental touches. The interior is sumptuously decorated, with gilded mirrors and giant chandeliers and an alabaster Turkish bath, all reflecting the grandeur of the epoch. The palace is now closed for restoration.

8 Mosaic in St. Sophia YILDIZ SARAYI : This palace is made up of many pavillions, kiosks and villas, built in the 19th century, and scattered over a magnificent park overlooking the Bosphorus. The porcelain factory of Yıldız, in one of the pavillions, was founded by Sultan Abdulhamit II and was reopened in The factory now produces the finest porcelain. Open every day, except Monday and Tuesday, from 9.00 to and from to BEYLERBEYİ SARAYI : The Palace of Beylerbeyi is on the Asian side of the Bosphorus, and was built in 1865 by Sultan Abdulaziz. The interior is decorated w ith fine white marble, and the gardens and terraces and little kiosks on the Bosphorus are delightful. The palace is now closed for restoration. ÇİNİLİ KÖŞK : This tiled kiosk was built in 1472 after the conquest of Istanbul by Sultan Mehmet II. With its fine blue and green tiled interior, it is one of the most outstanding monuments of that period. Inside, many of Sultan Mehmet s possessions are displayed. Open every day, except Monday, 9.30 to the churches AYASOFYA : The huge church of St. Sophia is one of the world's greatest architectural works. Built by Constantine in 325, it was reconstructed in its present form by the Emperor Justinian in 532. A fter the conquest of Istanbul it was turned into a mosque by Mehmet II, and it is now a museum. The scale of the buifding is awe-inspiring and there are several fine Byzantine mosaics. Open every day, except Monday, from 9.30 to THE CHURCH OF ST. IRENE : This old Byzantine church, second in importance after Ayasofya, was where the Ecumenical Council of 381 was held. 9 The Harem in Topkapi Palace KAARİYE CAMİİ : The old Church of St. Saviour in Chora. It was built in the 5th century and has been restored many tim es as w ell as being converted Into a mosque. Today the church is a treasure house of Byzantine frescoes and mosaics, depicting the life of C hrist and scenes from the Old Testament, all of which have been restored to their form er beauty. Open every day, except Tuesday, from 9.30 to FETHİYE CAMİİ : The old church of St. Mary Panmakaristos. In this church, transformed into a mosque, there are beautiful gilded Byzantine mosaics from the 14th century. Open every day, except Wednesday, from 9.30 to Also worth visiting are the MOLLAZEYREK CAMİİ, the old Church of Christ Pantocrator, the İMRAHOR CAMİİ, the old Church of St. John of Stoudion and KÜÇÜK AYASOFYA CAMİİ, the Church of St. Sergius and St. Bacchus. the castles YEDİKULE This seven towered castle is well preserved and situated at the junction of the Byzantine sea and land walls, which encircle the old city. ANADOLU HİSARI : This fortress on the Asian side of the Bosphorus was built by Sultan Beyazıt I, and it is situated at the narrowest point on the Bosphorus. RUMELİ HİSARI : This castle on the European side of the Bosphorus faces the Anadolu Hisarı. It was built by Mehmet the Conqueror in In summer, open air theatre and folklore performances are given here. Open every day from to OTHER BYZANTINE AND OTTOMAN MONUMENTS THE RAMPARTS : The great Byzantine defences stretch from the Golden Horn to the Sea of Marmara. These were the strongest fortifications of the Mediaeval world, which the Turks managed to breach in The walls were begun by the Emperor Theodosius II in 413, and they are 6.5 km. lung and punctuated with massive bastions. 10 The Grand Bazaar THE AQUEDUCT OF VALENS : This aqueduct was finished in 378, in the reign of the Emperor Valens, and it provided the Byzantine palace with water. It is 800 metres long and consists of two storeys of arcades. YEREBATAN SARAYI : This great Byzantine underground cistern was connected to the Aqueduct of Valens and supplied water to the imperial palace. It is built with 336 columns with Corinthian capitals. Open every day from 9.00 to BiNBiRDiREK : The Cistern of A Thousand and One Columns. In fact it has only 224 and today the cistern is dry. AT MEYDANI : The ancient Hippodrome of Constantinople, where the chariot races took place. Three columns line the centre of the Hippodrome: OBELISK OF THEODOSIUS, (D ikilitaş), a porphyry monolith 20 metres high, with carved hieroglyphics, which was taken from the Temple of Karnak; the COLUMN OF SERPENTS (Yılanlı Sütun), which was taken from the Temple of Apollo at Delphi and consists of three intertwined serpents; and the OBELISK OF BRICKS (Örme Sütun).

11 The Blue Mosque The other main columns of the city are the COLUMN OF THE GOTHS, in Gulhane Park, near Topkapi Palace, and the tall COLUMN OF CONSTANTINE, known as the Burnt Column or Qemberlita?. THE GALATA TOWER : At the top of this old Genoese tower is a luxurious restaurant from which there is a panoramic view of the city, the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus. THE BEYAZIT TOWER : Built i n white marble, the tower possesses a gallery, from which one can have a splendid view of the city. THE TOWER OF LEANDER : This tower is set on an island at the entrance to the Bosphorus. A legend says that a beautiful maiden named Hero lived on the island and her lover l.eander used to swim to the island to meet her, until he was drowned in a storm. THE FOUNTAINS Istanbul's fountains, often in the Ottoman baroque style, appear at the corners of the streets, adding a delightful freshness to the city. The most beautiful fountain is that of AHMET III behind St. Sophia, and which dates from The TOPHANE FOUNTAIN, beside the Bosphorus, is built of beautiful sculptured marble.

14 The Archaeological Museum the museums Besides the aformentioned monuments, which have been turned into museums, such as Topkapi Palace and St. Sophia, there are also the following museums: ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM (Arkeoloji Müzesi). This contains an immense collection of classical sculptures, sarcophagi, tombstones, pottery, figurines and Graeco-Roman and Byzantine coins. Open every day, except Monday, from 9.30 to MUSEUM OF THE ANCIENT ORIENT (Eski Şark Eserleri Müzesi). Situated beside the preceding museum, it is full of Assyrian, Babylonian, Sumerian and H ittite treasures. MUSEUM OF MOSAICS (Mozaik Müzesi). This museum is beside the Blue Mosque and contains many Roman mosaics taken from the Palace of the Byzantine Emperors. Open every day except Tuesday, from 9.30 to MUSEUM OF TURKISH AND ISLAMIC ART (Türk ve İslam Eserleri Müzesi). This museum is in the imaret or hospice of the Süleymaniye Mosque. On display are illuminated Korans, miniatures, antique carpets and reliefs from the Seljuk period. Open every day, except Monday, from to MUNICIPAL MUSEUM (Belediye Müzesi). 16 <r One can never be bored in Istanbul. As a change from touring the city sites, some entertainment and relaxation is always welcome. One can enjoy sitting in a cafe or going to a night-club, or perhaps to a play or a concert. For pure relaxation there are Istanbul s beaches, and there «re sports for those who feel more energetic. For a really unusual diversion one could try a Turkish bath. CAFES : One can find many charming old cafes all along the Bosphorus, where old men still smoke hookahs. One particularly colourful spot to drink beer and eat delicious snacks is the Çiçek Pasajı or Flower Market, just off İstiklal Caddesi. Near the cemetery of Eyüp Mosque is the Pierre Loti Cafe, where the nineteenth century romantic wrote of the splendid panorama of the Golden Horn as seen from that spot. NIGHT-CLUBS AND CABARET : Like all great cities, Istanbul possesses many night-clubs but they all have a special oriental flavour with their exotic eastern music and dancing. Large hotels like the HILTON, TARABYA, CARLTON and ÇINAR possess their own night-clubs, and there are many discotheques in Cumhuriyet Caddesi. İstiklâl Cad entertainment o THE ARTS : One can hear classical music concerts by the Istanbul Symphony Orchestra in the concert season, (October to May). Turkish plays and works from the international repertoire are performed in the City Theatre. In summer there are performances held in the Rumeli Hisar and in the open theatre beside the Hilton. The Istanbul Opera has a rich repertoire and the Ankara Ballet gives regular performances in Istanbul.

BEACHES : There are many beaches around Istanbul: FLORYA and ATAKÖY on the European side of Marmara. On the Bosphorus there are many places where one can swim: LİDO, BEBEK, YENİKÖY, TARABYA and BÜYÜKDERE (on the European side), and SALACAK and KÜÇÜKSU (on the Asian side). A t the end of the Bosphorus on the Black Sea there are the beautiful beaches of KİLYOS (European side) and ŞİLE (Asian side). On the Asian coast of Marmara there are MODA (Kadıköy), FENERBAHÇE, CADDEBOSTAN, SUADİYE, SÜREYYA, BOSTANCI and KARTAL beaches. Also there are beautiful beaches on the PRINCES' ISLANDS. TURKISH BATHS : There are many Turkish baths or hamam in Istanbul. Especially fo r tourists is the GALATASARAY HAMAMI, istiklâl Caddesi, Suterazi Sok. 24, which is an authentic old Turkish bath. Also there is the CAĞALOĞLU HAMAMI, Hilalihamer Caddesi 34, Cağaloğlu. SHOPPING There are three big shopping centres for tourists in Istanbul. In the old city there is the GRAND BAZAAR, in Beyoğlu there is İSTİKLÂL CADDESİ, (avenue), and behind Taksim Square there is the elegant CUMHURİYET CADDESİ, which leads to Şişli via Halaskârgazi Caddesi. The Grand Bazaar, known in Turkish as the Kapalı Çarşı or Covered Bazaar, is a labyrinth-like city of over 4,000 shops. The variety and colourfulness of the bazaar is a feast for the eyes. Each trade has its own street, such as the goldsmiths' street, the carpet sellers' street or the leather sellers street. Craftsmen s work from all over Turkey is displayed in these fascinating streets. Among all the temptations offered to the visitor there are the classic souvenirs in onyx, copper, meerschaum and ceramics, also there are oriental carpets, fabulous jewellery and antiques in the Bedesten in the centre of the bazaar. İstiklâl Caddesi is a street of elegant and luxurious shops selling fine clothes, jew ellery and antiques. The ready-to-wear boutiques for the latest fashions, and carpet, ceramics and porcelain shops are situated all along Cumhuriyet Caddesi. There are also many hotels and night-clubs along this street. EXCURSIONS THE BOSPHORUS : The Bosphorus or Boğaziçi, is one of the most beautiful sights in the world and no visitor should miss a trip up these magnificent straits. The Bosphorus winds around the tree clad hills of the Asian and European sides, measuring 30 km. in length and varying between 0.7 and 3.5 km. in width. The boats which leave from Karaköy, near the Galata Bridge, zig-zag up the Bosphorus and one can stop for a couple of hours at one of the little villages close to the Black Sea, before making the return journey. Travel agencies also organize half-day tours of the Bosphorus. All along the Bosphorus there are old wooden villas or yah, Ottoman palaces, castles and fishing villages, where one can eat a tasty lunch of freshly caught fish. The newest sight on the Bosphorus is the suspension bridge, one of the longest in the world (1074 m.), and a perfect symbol of the link between East and West.

18 THE PRINCES ISLANDS : Boats depart from Karakôy for the 1 1/2 hour journey to Büyükada, the biggest of the Princes' Islands, which was a pleasure island for the Byzantine princes. The island is covered with scented pines and there are beautiful beaches. There are no cars on the island and instead one can take a phaeton for a tour of the island, through the pine trees and ending up for lunch in one of the excellent restaurants by the sea. 19 practical information * CHOICE OF A DATE SDrina and early summer are perhaps the most charming times in Istanbul. At the height of summer it is more crowded and hot, though there are always cooling Black Sea breezes. At the end of September and the beginning of November the weather can be beautiful. Winter temperatures vary between 2 and 10C., sometimes with rapid changes of temperature. MEANS OF ACCESS BY AIR Most airlines have flights to Istanbul s international airport at Yeşilköy. 21 TRANSPORTATION The city buses and dolmuş (shared taxis) leave from Taksim and Eminönü squares, on the European side, and from the quays at Üsküdar and Kadıköy, on the Asian side. There are taxi ranks everywhere. One should count 4 TL as a basic charge and 2 TL for every kilometre. The boats which serve the Bosphorus, Golden Horn, Kadıköy and the Princes Islands leave from Karaköy, beside the Galata Bridge. Ferry boats for crossing the Bosphorus: KABATAŞ ÜSKÜDAR (cars), departing every minutes from both sides, crossing in 15 mins. (10 TL per car and 1 TL per person). SİRKECİ-HAREM (buses), services every half hour, crossing in 25 mins.
