2 MATERIALS USED IN THE MODULE Main video: 2011 Falınız. This video is designed as a radio show that has two versions. One of the versions makes use of the full text (see Appendix II) and the other version (mmla ) makes use of partial information from the text (only information about some of the Zodiac signs is given). The instructor and the learners can use either depending on how much time they would like to spend on this module. Main text: "2011 Falınız" (See Appendix II) 1) BAĞLAM/CONTEXT In this module, you will explore the meanings of horoscope signs in Turkish. You will learn the general characteristics of each zodiac sign. Then, there will be a list of 2011 predictions for each sign made by expert astrologists. MEKAN VE ZAMAN / SPACE AND TIME There are many people in the world who still believe in some form of fortune- telling. Fortune- telling can be regarded as an activity that helps predict and, at the same time, order space and time in the future. 2

3 2) TEMATİK PROJE / THEMATIC PROJECT One project is suggested for this module. Project 1: Falınıza Bakarak Geleceği Görün/Inquire into your future The project consists of a text on zodiac signs, in which there are general characteristics of the signs and 2011 predictions for each sign. It is suggested that you read and listen to the text and analyze the predictions for your own sign. After reading and listening to the text and analyzing it in class, you are asked to explore fortune telling and superstition in Turkey (such as the coffee- reading tradition). After becoming familiar with one of these traditions, you are asked to perform a session (preferably coffee reading) and film it. EXCHANGE AND ACT Pre- reading: warm- up discussion on zodiac signs. After reading: Compare the signs; and discuss compatibility of signs with people's characters. Film a fortune- telling activity (preferably coffee reading) ACTION: Compare horoscope signs; film a coffee- reading activity. THEME: Write a process paragraph or a paragraph on new year predictions. OPERATIONS: Form adjectives and use them in context; use future tense markers and possibility markers in both oral and written contexts. 3

This presentation focuses on different techniques and superstitions that are used (in Turkey and maybe some other parts of the world) to predict the future. 9) YARDIMCI KONUŞMA KALIPLARI / PRE- ORAL ACTIVITY SHEET In this module, you will come across many personality adjectives, so it is good to know how some of these adjectives are formed. The most common way of forming adjectives is to derive them from noun and verb stems. The following suffixes are used to derive adjectives from noun stems: - CA: Çocukça (childish), yaşlıca (oldish, this - CA is used to reduce the intensity of the adjective) - CI: yalancı (liar), şüpheci (skeptical), hayalci (dreamy), inatçı (stubborn). - li: sıcakkanlı (amiable), neşeli (cheerful), akıllı (clever), mantıklı (reasonable), iyi niyetli (favorable), merhametli (compassionate, gracious), gizemli (mysterious), disiplinli (organized). - sal: duygusal (emotional). - siz: dikkatsiz (careless), acımasız (merciless, ruthless). The following suffixes are used to derive adjectives from verb stems: - (y)ici: koruyocu (protective), kalıcı (permanent). - (A)cAn: sevecen (loving). - GAC: utangaç (shy). - GAn: konuşkan (talkative), çekingen (timid, shy). Analyze the other adjectives (see Appendix I) and group them according to the suffixes they take; see if there are irregulars, and those with different suffixes. 8
