F irst of all, I have had the chance to love my profession. I carry on the business of my father; you know, there is no rule that says you must love your father s profession. Particularly at that time I believe I owe my success to my determination, my desire to prove to people around what I could do and to show how the best application should be. If you can set a good example, then you can manage well, and if you look for the best, then you have to work hard. I come to the company very early in the morning and go out late. What I mean is that you should not order what should be done, but set an example by doing it. You should establish your principles well and identify your targets clearly. One of my primary principles is honesty. They say, You don t have to tell what you think, but you must think about what you say. Another important principle is related to money: i.e. the principle of Win/Win. All those working with me should win, so that they work willingly. And then comes the love for human beings Even though I have an uncompromising and disciplined character, I love people. There are so many people out there, waiting for their capacity to be discovered. Such people s success is our success. I am just on the bridge and I only show the way. To be successful, you should be honest, set a long-term target, and then lock onto that target. Actually, it s quite simple. Perhaps, depending on different characters, the phase of getting locked onto targets may seem difficult. You should not get bored of it. I never get bored and lock onto the target. For example, we have been able to build this building of Arkas in 12 years. We 046

My objective is that the Turkish maritime industry attains a good position, be saved from being an amateur and personal game, and made a more professional community consisting of companies in dialogue with each other and capable of acting jointly when necessary. Unfortunately, institutionalization is something that s not much seen in the Turkish maritime companies. Your company is one of those that have succeeded in institutionalizing. However, anyway, we hear that you are the decision maker in all critical matters at Arkas. What do you want to say about this matter? Since I set the primary targets, they want me to check whether the decisions taken conform to the primary target. Other than that, I do not meddle in the routine business. Generally, we train our own personnel. Very good managers distinguish themselves from our young and dynamic personnel and consequently we can hand over our functions to them. In case they need, they consult us. I mean, my duty is to set the targets and ensure that everything goes right on the course. Our companies provide support to each other. You said you have an uncompromising character. How rigid are you in the working environment? First of all, I am very rigid and merciless against myself. I believe that I should work with zero mistake. Consequently, I sometimes break the heart of my staff and then I feel sorry about it. Because, even though I admit it to be impossible, I want them to perform with zero mistake. However, as people get to know me, they better understand that I do not intend to break their heart deliberately. Well, say that you have made a mistake. How do you cope with it? I try to forget it. I have to do it to be able to think positively. If you have entered a business and incurred losses as a result, then pay that loss and dissolve that business. Then forget it and enter a different business. The reason is that there is no other thing that is more difficult and energy consuming than turning a business that makes you incur losses into a profitable one. You say, One of the mistakes that I made in the past was the shipyard investment. Could you please tell us about it? That was a business I did not know. A partnership was considered in We wanted to enter that business on account of the fact that we were not able to import the ships we considered purchasing due to the difficulty in foreign exchange transfer transactions. But, then the partnership was separated due to disagreement and consequently we gave up. I sold my shares at a dirt-cheap price. I lost money in that sense. Currently, I do not consider turning towards that direction again, everyone has their own business. I place an order 048

What other profession would you have chosen if you had not carried on your father s business? I was born and bred on the seaside. I would spend almost all day in the sea during the summer. And they could leave a 9-year-old child in the sea for 4 to 5 hours without controlling what he is doing. Consequently, I am so bound to sea that nothing can beat my love for sea. Sea is difficult but bounteous. Let s talk about the industrial issues now. Which one of your activities is your flagship? This is something like a relay race. Flagship attribute depends on the time. 10 years ago, business of shipping agency was the flagship. Because we staggered in the business of shipping agency due to congestion at Haydarpasa port, we entered the business of port operation at the Kumport quays in Ambarli with the fear of losing our business. I mean we began port operation not by conducting a research to see if this business was profitable or not by for the purpose to be able to carry on our own business in an orderly manner. And such businesses certainly earn you money. Companies with agents in Turkey began opening their own offices. How do you ensure yourself against any break-offs when you conclude contracts: through personal dialogues or is institutional structure effective in that regard? You cannot prevent such developments. The solution is reciprocal interests. You should create the image and the environment to show that those companies working with you is the most profitable choice and that it is in line with their interests. You should create it to ensure that there would be no break-offs when a change occurs in management or in anything else. This is kind of buying and selling and a person who thinks that he is making profit out of that buying/selling, he does not spoil that order. Particularly the Europeans never spoil it. He will be paid his money in a timely manner, you will act in a quite friendly manner. 050

We will be a partner of the joint venture that will submit an offer for the Izmir Port. My family lives here for 2 and a half centuries, and, without struggling, I won t let others to have it. What are your opinions about the private port operations in Turkey? It is very new in Turkey. Turkey has not yet very well understood the profitability of this business. You should be very well organized in order to conduct the port operating business in the real sense. In my opinion, we will become a port operator when we tell a quay from a port. But we have not been able to get rid of the port and quay concepts. There are still those who think that a quay is a port. The government should see that Turkey needs serious ports and decide accordingly. Could you please tell us about the port you, as Arkas Group, build in Gölcük? We build that port particularly for automotive exports. There are very serious hardships in that field. New cars to be imported are first transported from Bursa to zmir on trucks. It is impossible! Consequently, a port is a must in that region. We had become the dealer of some automotive brands before we made this investment, thus we learned the hardships in the automotive industry by personally experiencing them. And then we commenced this investment. I believe that automotive industry is the second most important transportation factor after containers in Turkey. Consequently, I think that we have made a correct investment. We see that you prefer container carriers in your ship investments. Is it because of the fact that you engage in container transportation? That s because it s a part of our business. Containers will serve me for a very long period of time. 6 in that field both in and out of Turkey. Instead of learning the businesses I do not know, I prefer to make the best use of the many more possibilities of the business I know. We should be locked on this matter. In my opinion, container carriers are the type of vessels that are the least affected by the fluctuations in the industry. What is the proportion of capital and loans in your investments? I can say that it is fifty-fifty. Shipyards abroad come to us with the offer of the banks selling loans for newbuilding projects. The German are dominant in this field on account of their closeness to Turkey. The British ones are more hesitant, they are getting used to having dealings in Turkey. It is not important if they are German, British or Italian. The World Bank is part of this kind of dealings. We do not use loans that much. We only receive loans in shipping and port operating. We work with the Germans in port operating, but we have also worked with the World Bank. Our current total loan volume exceeds 250 million dollars. Do you have a specific fleet target for the next 5 to 10 years? We currently have 6 vessels on order. We also negotiate with new shipyards. This will bring unbelievable changes, which will affect both the world and Turkey. It reaches every single coast just like a very big wave. It will cause significant problems for feeder operators. There will be one agent instead of two. Unfortunately one of them will disappear. Even though a good person will always find a job to do, there will be a significant contraction. Some lines will disappear and those working on that line will be in a very difficult situation. It would take 2 to 3 years to recover the balances in the industry. Particularly when we consider the regional potentials, what can you say about your current position in transit transportation? We can do more than we do in transit transportation. However, it is met with a little suspicion. Our transit volume does not exceed 5%. There are no circulars relating to transits in Turkey. The current system is the transit regime.
