15 LAND AND RIVER DILEMMA: A DISCUSSION OF RACE IN ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN Özlem KARAGÖZ GÜMÜġÇUBUK * ÖZET Bu çalıģmanın amacı Mark Twain tarafından yazılmıģ olan Huckleberry Finn in Maceraları isimli romana odaklanarak, Amerikan toplumunda ırk kavramının nasıl tanımlandığını tartıģmaktır. Anahtar Kelimeler: Irk, nehir, kara, beyazlık, biyolojik ırk/ sosyal ırk tanımları ABSTRACT The purpose of this article is to make a discussion of race in the framework of American society by focusing on the novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn written by Mark Twain. The reason why we chose to analyze this novel is because although many discussions have made about the 19th century understanding of race, this article proposes to create a dichotomy of river and land intertwining contemporary theories of race. * Ege Universitesi, Edebiyat Fakültesi, Amerikan Kültürü ve Edebiyatı Bölümü. 1
The discussion of race in this article goes hand in hand with theories of whiteness. Since whiteness is considered a privilege in American society, the article also proposes that non-white races in the American society were treated to be inferiors while preserving the purity of the white race. The last aim of this article is to reveal how the river in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn becomes a tool to represent both the ideal race relations while it also symbolizes Huck Finn s process of maturity. As a result, while focusing on theories of race and whiteness, the article concludes in the attempt to provide an analysis of race that is unique to American society. This analysis brings forth a sociological picture of American society of race by using the metaphor of river and land dichotomy. Key Words: Race, river, land, whiteness, biological race /social construction of race LAND AND RIVER DILEMMA: A DISCUSSION OF RACE IN ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN Hemingway declared All modern American literature comes from Huck Finn, and called it the best book we ve had. (Hemingway, 22). Hemingway s comment about Adventures of Huckleberry Finn can be justified for two reasons. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has become a classic of American literature. Besides this fact, with its themes, sense of humor and the representation of vernacular language, it has also become a classic of world literature since it has achieved blending qualities or information identified with American society such as the racial concerns and the more universal theme related to humanity, disregarding borders and stereotypes related to race in a unique way. The friendship of Huck and Jim and their journey on the Mississippi river becomes a metaphor of 19 th century race relations in America. Both of them exist as outsiders to civilized society. Huck is the happy homeless son of the town drunk, constantly running away from all the attempts to civilize him. Jim is a slave escaping to freedom in the North. He faces terrible racism and oppression both in the condition of being a slave and his unrevealed freedom until the end of the novel. This essay aims to make a discussion of race in Huck Finn in a land and river dichotomy. The issue of race will provide us information about how the American society in the nineteenth century perceived racial relations. Moreover, while discussing race, it is impossible to neglect the importance of whiteness since whiteness is considered a racial privilege. This perspective will help us understand how the non-white races in the American society were treated to be inferiors while preserving the purity of the white race was a racial privilege. Next, how the river is connected to the analysis of race relations will be 2
revealed whereas the river becomes a tool to represent both the ideal of race relations while it also symbolizes Huck Finn s process of maturity. Race cannot be defined in a single way. The difficulty of racial discussions stems from the variety of approaches there is to it. The main controversy over race has been on whether it should be defined biologically or socially. The classification of people according to their biology or physical appearance goes back to prehistorical times. Later the modern concept of race took place with the rise of Europe and the colonization of lands. The rise of Europe includes an up rise in political and economic power along with the emergence of the bourgeois class. The concept of race was born in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century colonial expansion of the Western Europe nation-states. Increased competition among these nation states of Europe and cultural and phenotypic differences between Europeans and the populations of the Americas, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and Africa; and the relative ease with which the Europeans were able to dominate those populations influenced European perceptions of all non-europeans. (Daniel, 9) This condition formed the ground for the formation of racial categories and justified conquests to serve the system of slavery. The etymological roots 1 of the word race can be traced in Middle French around 1500 to refer to people of common descent. It was referred to in Italian from the word razza to mean race, breed and lineage. The meaning tribe or nation emerged in the seventeenth century. Among race scholars, the dominant view both in Europe and in the United States during the end of the eighteenth century and at the beginning of the nineteenth century was scientific racism. This term was used by scientists who believed that race could only be explained by biological traits. One of the supporters of biological racism was Joseph Arthur Comte de Gobineau 2 who believed in the supremacy of the white race. Gobineau thus structures his argument on the supremacy of the white race like many other followers of scientific racism. Among the followers of scientific racism who held similar views during the nineteenth century were Josiah Clark Nott and George Robbins Gliddon. These two scientists exemplified how believers in biological racism reacted to mixed-race relationships. These scientists reacted to the mulatto race which was the first term used to designate the children of a black and white relationship. Such children were categorized as the short lived of any class of the human 1 Online Etymology Dictionary. Ed. Douglas Harper. 18 race. (Nott and Gliddon, 42) they were considered to have a shorter life expectancy because they had aberration. Besides being considered unintelligent, mulattos were also considered to lack physical power when compared to whites or African Americans. During the nineteenth century it was believed that each racial group had social and cultural boundaries that they could not cross over. This containment of races in their places served primarily to protect the superiority of the white race. Indeed, Darwin s theory of evolution opened up a new field of discussion in the twentieth century to go beyond biological classifications of races. For instance, the European-American settlers address the African race as inferior, so that they could exploit them as a labor force in the newly colonized America. Later the European immigrants emphasized so powerfully that the Africans were inferior that the blacks were brainwashed into believing that they had no other choice other than obeying the rules of the superior whites. In this manner, the whites tried to classify skin colors in a hierarchical way to emphasize their own superiority to other races. During the colonial period, the discussion of race was only limited to the European white settlers and the African American slaves who were exploited because of their skin color. In the colonial period, being a slave was identified with being black. As long as a person was non-white, the white race demonized them since they were a threat to the purity of the white race and not much has changed since the colonial period. The enforcement of anti-miscegenation laws was justified by emphasizing that such laws functioned to preserve the racial integrity of white citizens. Even if the legitimate purpose of the miscegenation laws was to protect racial purity, the only race that was protected from contamination was Caucasian. As Zabel states in his article, if the purpose of such laws was to protect racial purity then the same should have been done in other racial categories: If racial purity is a desirable goal, then why are only Caucasians protected, and why should a pure Negro be allowed to marry a person who is seven eights Caucasian and only one eight Negro? This occurs not from a lack of logic or from ignorance, but because these laws are designed to preserve the purity of the majority Caucasian race which in itself is one aspect of their larger, unexpressed goal of preserving what may think as our white American culture. (Zabel, 59) Zabel s comment on racial purity reveals the hypocrisy in defining which race is pure and which race is not. In this case, the attitude about defining the pureness of a race is that only the Caucasian race is designated to pureness whereas, all the other races are kept out of the pureness territory. Race is the first thing that Americans notice when they meet somebody new because they tend to believe that race provides the most significant clues 4
about who they really are. As López states in the introduction to his book titled White By Law: The Legal Construction of Race, the physical appearance of individuals, such as their hair and skin color, influences whether we are figuratively free or enslaved. (López, 3) Society assigns people racial categories by opinion and social experience rather than biological criteria. Although the meaning of race begins from perceived biological differences between groups what increases racial discrimination is a social construction. Since its publication Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been both criticized for being a racist novel and at the same time it has been praised for bringing out the virtues of the African-American tradition as represented through the character of Jim. His sense of honor, loyalty and the importance of the nuclear family are some of the issues which exemplify that Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a novel which in most cases overcomes racial prejudices and classifications. Since the publication of Huckleberry Finn, much debate has been focused on the issue of race. Many who do not view the novel as racist often only see Jim s humanity and friendship with Huck others, however, view the text as racist and see African Americans as dehumanized and stereotyped. Though set in the antebellum period, Huck Finn was written in the period following the Civil War. So legally, it is when the thirteenth Amendment and the fourteenth amendment were passed, abolishing slavery and giving blacks the right to vote. At every opportunity, Twain uses most of the scenes in the novel to criticize America s treatment of blacks even after slavery was abolished. Most of the instances that will be provided from the novel will reveal that even after legally abolishing slavery and assuming the biological definitions of race false, the social construction of race continues in the nineteenth century Sothern society. In order to exemplify the social construction of race as mentioned above, Huck s father comments on the issue of race in chapter six. As a white person, he can not stand the fact that blacks will have access to opportunities and rights like that of the white people. He also states that he will protest black citizens right to vote by not voting himself at the elections. Huck s father continues to draw clear cut lines between whites and blacks and racially classifies the blacks as an inferior racial class: Oh, yes, this is a wonderful govment, wonderful. Why, looky here. There was a free nigger there from Ohio a mulatter, most as white as a white man. He had the whitest shirt on you ever see, too, and the shiniest hat; and there ain t a man in that town that s got as fine clothes as what we had; and he had a gold watch and chain, and a silver-headed cane the awfulest old grayheaded nabob in the state. And what do you think? They said he was a p fessor in a college, and could talk all kinds of languages, and knowed everything. And that aint the wust. They said he could vote when he was at home. Well, that let me out. Thinks I, what is the country a-coming to? It was lection day, and I 5
was just about to go and vote myself if I warn t too drunk to get there; but when they told me there was a state in this country where they d let that nigger vote, I drawed out. I says I ll never vote ag in. Them s the very words I said; they all heard me; and the country may rot for all me I ll never vote ag in as long as I live. And to see the cool way of that nigger why, he wouldn t a give me the road if I hadn t shoved him out o the way. (Twain, 35) The comments of Huck s father about blacks show that beyond biological classifications of race there is a social aspect to the maintenance of racial classifications and consistently defining the blacks as inferiors. Since blacks are classified as inferiors according to Huck s father, he can not stand the possibility that a black man can wear clothes resembling a white man. Besides their physical appearances, white man does not want them to have legal rights such as voting, since they are perceived as intellectually inferiors. The right to vote for blacks is like equalizing a black man with a white man that is why Huck s father rejects voting for the rest of his life. While discussing race in Huckleberry Finn, most of the examples related to this issue are provided by our aspect of how we perceive the character of Jim. Because Jim is black, his identity is defined chiefly by slavery. Huck first refers to Jim as Miss Watson s big nigger. (14) Being on the raft for Huck and Jim is also an allegory of idealistic race relations in the American society. Whenever Huck and Jim are lonely on the raft, neither have concerns related to racism. However, the intrusion of the Duke and the King on the raft leads Huck to define how they should treat each other on the raft: The duke done it, and Jim and me was pretty glad to see it. It took away all the uncomfortableness and we felt mighty good over it, because it would a been a miserable business to have any unfriendliness on the raft; for what you want, above all things, on a raft, is for everybody to be satisfied, and feel right and kind towards the others. It didn t take me long to make up my mind that these liars warn t no kings nor dukes at all, but just low-down humbugs and frauds. But I never said nothing, never let on; kept it to myself; it s the best way; then you don t have no quarrels, and don t get into no trouble. (127) In terms of metaphorical race relations, the river or the raft becomes a symbol of an ideal where racial categories or classifications do not exist. What exists on the river is humanity and friendship, disregarding the character s color. The juxtaposition between land and river is composed in such a way that the river where it is assumed to a symbol of nature and wilderness and natural law subverts and becomes a symbol of civilization. The land, on the other hand, is far away from providing Jim and Huck Finn a peaceful ground for friendship and humanity because on the land, race is socially constructed and defined by social laws of the society. Race does not exist on the raft however, when society 6
