Our student has been awarded the Top in Cyprus award for Art & Design IGCSE. Ecem also received the High Achievement Award for IGCSE Turkish. Ecem has been invited to attend the Outstanding Cambridge Learners Awards Ceremony in south Nicosia in February. Ecem said that she is obviously thrilled to have received these awards and paid particular thanks to her art teacher Miss Kennington, for believing in her and inspiring her with a love of art. All of us at ESK are very proud of Ecem s achievements and wish her every success in her IB Diploma studies. Öğrencimiz, IGCSE Resim ve Tasarım sınavında Kıbrıs Birinciliği ödülüne layık görülmüştür. Ecem aynı zamanda IGCSE Türkçe sınavında Yüksek Başarı Ödülü almıştır. Ecem Şubat ayı içerisinde güney Lefkoşa da gerçekleşecek Cambridge Olağanüstü Başarı Ödülleri Töreni ne katılmak üzere davet edilmiştir. Ecem bu ödüllere layık görüldüğü için çok mutlu olduğunu belirtirken, özellikle ona inanan ve sanat aşkını aşılayan Resim Öğretmeni Sharon Kennington a teşekkür etti. ESK olarak Ecem in başarısıyla gurur duyuyor, ona IB Diploma eğitiminde başarılar diliyoruz.

2 Page 2 Principal s Letter Hello to all of the students, parents, and staff of The English School of Kyrenia, After three months of service I am so struck by the quality of the teams that have been assembled here at ESK. In 37 years of work at some of the finest schools in the world like Sevenoaks School in Kent, and The International School Bangalore, India, I have never encountered better. Recently I had the pleasure of meeting the TA Coordinators whose enthusiasm, expertise, and foresight in establishing policy and process that will give us strength long into the future was deeply impressive. I ve often used the phrase for a successful school that attitude is everything, and the professional structures that have been established by so many at ESK are deeply impressive, based upon the expression of this phrase. The school is coming of age, and is maturing into what was discussed in the original dream of what we could be, an exceptional school, a world leader rather than a follower. Underneath all that is celebrated in these pages are countless hours of dedicated and highly skilled service from colleagues. In readiness for the next academic year we are establishing a number of activities for our students that will lead to world certified awards. In bringing in courses in leadership for example we are looking into a future for our students where they will assume positions of responsibility throughout their careers, and we hope reach a point when they instinctively want to give back to Cyprus some of the advantages they have experienced by studying here. Boarding will become a feature of the school, with talented students from China, Bulgaria, Russia, Germany, and the Middle East and Turkey to name but a few, coming to ESK. This will provide our students with the opportunity to forge friendships that will last a life time, and compare cultures identifying what we have in common as global citizens without stripping any of us of our important cultural heritages. Our pages resound with energy, creativity, successes, effort, and truly celebrate how we as a community have embraced the challenges of creating such a fine school. My thanks go to our founders and co-dreamers, the Nevzat family, for their singular contribution to world-class education, and to all of my colleagues and the students themselves for sharing the dream. 4 Page 4 University Applications By Mrs Sue Williamson, Head of Humanities and Careers Progression Officer I am happy to announce that the first university applications for English School of Kyrenia are almost complete, and we have many of our students receiving good offers from reputable universities in the UK and America. If they achieve their predicted grades all of our IB students will be on their way to their chosen universities. Bath, Durham, Newcastle, Nottingham, Queens College London, York, Brighton, and Westminster and Northumbria to name but a few. Two students have already had offers from all five of their UK universities of choice, and two students who applied to colleges in the USA have offers and awards of no less than $ 10,000 per year. The full picture will not be known until April, but this is a heartening start we wish all of our students well as they gain places. Top Universities visit ESK On Friday 7 th February, we will have a visit of representatives from Imperial College London, Kings College London, The London School of Economics & Political Science and University College London (UCL). ESK will be the only school they are visiting in the North of the Island. They will talk to students in Year 11 and 12 about what their universities have to offer and about university applications in general. This visit is part of the ongoing progression service offered by the school.

Öngörülen notları almayı başardıkları takdirde, tüm IB öğrencilerimiz seçmiş oldukları üniversitelere girmeye hak kazanacaklardır. 6 Page 6 ESK Winter Bazaar 17 December 2013 The ESK Winter Bazaar proved to be a wonderful family afternoon with lots of fun and games as well as a flash mob show! Each class put together their own stall with some really inventive and creative ideas on display. The event raised more than 7,000 TL which will be split between several charities and the Primary student council projects. The gardening club will be using the proceeds of their produce sales towards buying seeds and supplies for next season. Funds raised by the sale of the two official charity calendars in memory of Paul Allen will benefit the charities of the Helping Hands club. A big thank you to all of the staff, children and parents who helped make the event so special and a big thank you also to all those who came along and joined in the fun and helped make the day so much fun.

7 Page 7 ESK Kış Pazarı 17 Aralık 2013 ESK Kış Pazarı, bir flash mob* gösterisi dahil, ailelere yönelik pek çok eğlence ve oyunla geçen harika bir etkinlik oldu. Her sınıf, bazıları oldukça özgün ve yaratıcı fikirlerle oluşturulan, kendi tezgahını hazırladı. Etkinlik sonucunda hem hayır kurumları, hem de İlkokul öğrenci konseyi projeleri arasında paylaştırılacak 7,000 TL den fazla bağış toplandı. Bahçivanlık kulübü ürünlerinin satışı sonucunda elde edilen gelir bir sonraki dönem ihtiyaç duyacakları tohum ve malzemelerin alımı için harcanacaktır. Paul Allen anısına hazırlanan iki resmi hayırkurumuna ait takvimlerin satışı ile toplanan gelir Helping Hands Yardımseverlik Kulübü yardım kurumlarına bağışlanacaktır. Bu etkinliği bu kadar özel yapmak adına, hem canla başla uğraşan personelimize, çocuklara ve velilere, hem de gelip eğlenceye katılarak bu günü daha da anlamlı kılan sizlere yürekten teşekkür etmek istiyoruz. *bir anda belirip bir eylemi ortaya koyan ve ardından hızlı bir şekilde dağılan insan topluluğu olarak Türkçe'ye çevrilebilir.

8 Page 8 Year 2 Children Recreate the Scutari Hospital 6 February 2014 By Miss Rebecca Simmons, Year 2 Teacher & Y1-2 Coordinator Year 2 boys chose to be wounded soldiers and Colonel Düşlem Korkmazel, who was the only female solider of the day, lead her troops from the battle field to the hospital. They took part in many activities including: writing letters home for the injured soldiers, recording injuries, and cleaning and setting up a field hospital. The children had a fantastic day and teachers would like to thank parents for their excellent costumes. Year 2 children have been learning about how Florence Nightingale helped the soldiers at the Crimean War, and how her ideas about nursing changed the face of nursing as we know it today. They completed homework projects and fact files about Florence Nightingale and her life. On Thursday, 6 th February, Year 2 at ESK was transformed to the Scutari Hospital for a fun packed role play day about Florence Nightingale. Children and teachers dressed as nurses, doctors and wounded soldiers, and acted out a hospital day caring for their friends. The children were supported by the CESV (Civil Emergency Service Volunteers), who came to teach children how to administer emergency first aid. Gözde Akıncı lead the year group as Florence Nightingale, assisted in her training by Miss Simmons.

9 Page 9 2. Sınıf Çocukları Scutari (Üsküdar) Hastanesini Yeniden Yarattılar 6 Şubat 2014 Yazan Miss Rebecca Simmons, 2. Sınıf Öğretmeni ve 1-2. Sınıf Koordinatörü 2. Sınıf çocukları Florence Nightingale in Crimean (Kırım) Savaşı sırasında askerlere nasıl yardım ettiği, ve hemşirelikle ilgili fikirlerinin hemşireliği nasıl değiştirerek, bugün bildiğimiz anlamdaki hemşireliği yarattığını öğrenmişlerdir. Çocuklar Florence Nightingale ve hayatı ile ilgili ev ödevi olarak projeler hazırlamışlardır. 6 Şubat, Perşembe günü ESK nın 2. Sınıf bölümü, Florence Nightingale temalı rol yapma etkinlikleriyle dolu eğlenceli bir gün için Üsküdar Hastanesi nde dönüştürülmüştü. Çocuklar ve öğretmenler hemşireler, doktorlar ve yaralı askerler olarak giyinip, arkadaşlarının bakımını üstlenecekleri bir hastane gününü canlandırdılar. Çocuklara CESV (Sivil Acil Durum Hizmet Gönüllüleri) destek vererek ilk yardım prosedürlerini nasıl yapacaklarını gösterdiler. Gözde Akıncı Florence Nightingale rolü ile grubun liderliğini üstlenip, eğitimi için Miss Simmons dan yardım aldı. Yaralı askerler olarak gelmeyi seçen 2. Sınıf erkekleri, tek bayan asker olarak Albay Düşlem Korkmazel liderliğinde savaş alanından hastaneye yönlendirildiler. Gün boyunca çok çeşitli faaliyetlere katıldılar: bunlardan bazıları yaralı askerler için ailelerine mektup yazmak, yaralanmaları kaydetmek, ve alan hastanesini temizlemek ve düzenlemekti. Çocukların harika zaman geçirdiği günde, öğretmenler olarak ailelere yarattıkları mükemmel kostümler için teşekkür etmek istiyoruz.

12 Page 12 Primary Flash-mob 16 December 2013 By Miss Polly Gough-Olaya, Year 5 Teacher & Dance Club Instructor This year, I wanted to make dancing more popular at ESK. So, in October, the primary girls and boy in dance club started learning two dances to perform at different events. They worked really hard and remembered a complicated dance routine, ready to open the Secondary winter performance of A Midsummer Night s Dream. The children danced at two of the three sold-out shows and left the audience smiling and wanting more. The 31 club children then went on to perform to the rest of the school in a flash-mob style dance, which also included 15 members of staff. Years 2 to 6 children were all together on the main playground for the first time this year and looked rather confused when the music started blasting out of the school building. Soon, the club children started dancing: just a few at first, followed by the others and finishing off with staff joining in too. We even had some non -club children take part which was fantastic! Overall, I m really impressed with all of the hard work that the dance club children put in to both performances and would like to say a massive thank-you to them, and to the staff that took part, for making the first Primary ESK Flash-mob a big success!

13 Page 13 İlkokul Flash-mob u* 16 Aralık 2013 Yazan Miss Polly Gough-Olaya, 5. Sınıf Öğretmeni ve Dans Kulübü Çalıştırıcısı Bu yıl ESK bünyesinde dansı daha popüler bir hale getirmek istedim. O nedenle, ilkokul dans kulüplerindeki kız ve erkek öğrenciler Ekim ayından itibaren farklı etkinliklerde sunulmak üzere iki dans üzerinde çalışmalarını yoğunlaştırdılar. Tüm dans öğrencileri çok yoğun çalıştılar; Orta Öğrenim kış performansı A Midsummer Night s Dream (Bir Yaz Gecesi Rüyası) oyununu açmak üzere çok karmaşık bir dans rutinini ezberlediler. Çocuklar kapalı gişe oynanan üç gösterinin ikisinde danslarını sergileyerek seyircilerin yüzlerinde bir gülümseme bıraktılar. Dans kulübünün 31 öğrencisi, artı 15 personel daha sonra flash-mob * stili danslarıyla okulun geriye kalanına bir gösteri yaptılar Sınıf çocuklarının tümü bu yıl ilk kez ana oyunalanında hep birlikteydiler ve okul binasından gelen yüksek sesli müziği duyunca çok şaşırdılar. Ardından dans kulübü çocukları danslarına başladılar, kısa süre sonra onlara başkaları katıldı, sonunda ise personelin de dahil olmasıyla dans sona erdi. Dansımıza kulüpte olmayan çocukların da katılmış olması harikaydı! Genel olarak söyleyebilirim ki, dans kulübündeki çocuklarının tümünün bu iki performans için ortaya koydukları yoğun çalışmaya hayran kaldım; hepsine tek tek teşekkür etmek istiyorum. Ayrıca ilk ESK İlkokul Flash-mob*unun bu kadar başarılı olmasına katkı koyan tüm personele de kocaman bir teşekkürler! *bir anda belirip bir eylemi ortaya koyan ve ardından hızlı bir şekilde dağılan insan topluluğu olarak Türkçe'ye çevrilebilir.

14 Page 14 Year 5 Trip to Kumyali and Cayirova - 26 November 2013 By Miss Muge Beyzade, Year 5 Teacher BACK TO OUR ROOTS Year 5 pupils were in for a real treat, as they travelled back in time during a visit to the villages of Cayirova and Kumyali. The children who are currently studying the topic of Our Island Cyprus had a most fitting trip to learn about and see some original Cypriot traditions. On the trip the children first visited the Olive mill in Cayirova. Here they were shown the old milling techniques and equipment. The children were told how the power to operate these machines has changed dramatically over the years; from humans, to animals to diesel and then electricity. Then they visited the modern mill where they got to taste the pure olive oil literally as it was coming out of the tap! Their journey then took them to the Nitovikla Garden Hotel in Kumyali, the home of retired Professor Zekai Altan. He has turned his home into a feast of Cypriot artefacts and he even has a cave in which tombs were discovered. Mr Altan, assisted by his staff, shared many old traditions with the children, most of which related to food. The children made their own bread, hand-made pasta and even dribidez, which is a form of pancake. The children left exhilarated by what they had learnt and full from all of the cooking and food tasting. A most educational and enjoyable day was had by all. Mr Altan was a super host and most knowledgeable on the traditions of Cypriot life, many of which he was trying to share with the children so that they too may one day pass them onto their own children. The children particularly loved the hands on experiences they had. The opportunity to eat the bread that they d made themselves was one that saw every child leave with a smile on their face.

15 Page Sınıfların Kumyalı-Çayırova Gezisi 26 Kasım 2013 KÖKLERİMİZE DÖNÜŞ Yazan Miss Müge Beyzade, 5. Sınıf Öğretmeni 5. Sınıf öğrencilerini, Kumyalı ve Çayırova köylerine düzenledikleri gezileri sırasında zaman içerisinde geriye gidecekleri büyük bir sürpriz bekliyordu. Halıhazırda Adamız Kıbrıs temasını işleyen çocuklar, konuya çok uygun düşen bir geziyle Kıbrıs a özgü bazı gelenek ve görenekleri görme ve öğrenme olanağı yakaladılar. Gezi sırasında çocuklar önce Çayırova daki Yağ Değirmenini ziyaret ettiler. Burada çocuklara eski değirmencilik teknikleri ve bu işlem için kullanılan araç gereçler gösterildi. Çocuklar yıllar içerisinde bu makineleri çalıştırmak için kullanılan gücün nasıl ciddi şekilde değiştiğini öğrendiler; insan gücü, hayvan gücü, mazot ve daha sonra da elektrik. Daha sonra modern değirmeni de ziyaret eden öğrenciler burada çeşmeden yeni çıkan saf zeytin yağının tadına bakma şansı buldular! Gezileri daha sonra onları emekli profesör Zekai Altan ın evi olan Kumyalı daki Nitovikla Garden Hoteli ne götürdü. Evini Kıbrıs a otantik eşyalardan oluşan bir şölene dönüştüren Zekai Altan ın eski gömütler bulunan bir mağarası bile bulunmakta. Zekai Altan, personeli ile birlikte çocuklarla çoğu yemekle ilgili olan pek çok eski geleneği paylaştı. Çocuklar kendi ekmekleri yapmak yanında, elyapımı makarna ve hatta krepe benzeyen dribidez bile yaptılar. Çocuklar oradan, edindiklerini bilgilerden coşkulu, yaptıkları ve tattıkları yiyeceklerden tok ayrıldılar. Bu herkesin çok şey öğrendiği, eğlenceli bir gezi oldu. Sevgili Zekai Altan, Kıbrıs yaşantısının gelenek ve görenekleri konusundaki engin bilgisiyle bizlere harika bir evsahibi oldu. Bildiklerini çocuklarla paylaşırken, bir gün onların da öğrendiklerini gelecek nesillerle paylaşmaları umudunu taşıyordu. Çocuklar özellikle kolları sıvayıp kendilerinin de deneme şansı buldukları aktiviteleri çok sevdiler. Kendilerinin yoğurduğu ekmekleri yeme olanağı bulmak, her çocuğun yüzünde bir gülümseme bıraktı.

16 Page 16 Secondary Fashion Day 20 December 2013 Think not what you are but what you can become By Mr Seamus Donahue, Secondary Mathematics Teacher At ESK we like to encourage our pupils to think widely about the world and their role with in it: not only what they will do with their own lives but what they can contribute to the whole world. They go from subject to subject throughout their school day and every term we like to take some time to consider how this learning connects up and what it means. One such day was Friday 20 th December when we held a Celebration of Fashion Day. The day started with morning workshops where students had the opportunity to learn how to knit (yes knitting is the new hobby of 2014, forget ipads and mobile phones), and make clothes and accessories out of things we would normally throw away: newspaper, plastic shopping bags, and bottles. There were two film workshops on the fashion industry: one on the opportunities and abuses of garment manufacture; the second hosted by Mrs Williamson on the role fashion has played in women s lives. In a second session our students put some of these ideas into action, choosing and dressing four models from each house and preparing display materials. The day climaxed with a Fashion Show put together by some of our IB students and hosted by Mrs Donohue. Zhanar Nur- Ahkmet (Year 13) and Olga Yashcenko (Year 12) gave our models the final splash of hair design and fashion runway walking. A team of students, led by Noah Swanson (Year 10), set up the hall, lighting and audio. The show started off to Cypriot music as Year 6 students performed a dance in stunning traditional dress. This gave way to the Banghra beats of our recent play A Midsummer Night Dream as the cast, in full Indian costume, danced their way through the dramatic opening to Ms Keller s interpretation of Shakespeare s work. Mrs Donohue then hosted a didn t they do well game show (okay, you have to be a certain age to remember the catchphrase but old Brucie is still using it on Strictly Come Dancing). Student teams had a minute to reproduce the results of our expert teachers (Ms Damar, Mrs Turnbull and Ms Kadri) in accessories, face painting and hair design. The Fashion Parade demonstrated the huge enthusiasm our students put into the day with fantastic costumes. Our team of judges thought long and hard before choosing Sevgi Oscar and Evrensel Sebep as winners of competition, with special mention to Hannah Ruby and it doesn t matter what you wear but who you are model, Uraz Şentürk. Finally, we finished with seasonal songs from Mr Phil Smith on ukulele, Mr Jutkiewicz on mandolin and a group from Year 7: Ahmet Atasoy, Mehmet Atasoy and Berke Emerce. Our Headmaster, Mr Brian Smith, summed up what all our staff felt: that the students once again demonstrated their huge capacity for creativity and thoughtful ingenuity. A big thanks was given to all the staff and IB students who also worked hard to make such a successful event.

19 Page 19 Orta Öğrenim Moda Günü 20 Aralık 2013 Ne olduğunu değil, ne olabileceğini düşün Yazan Mr Seamus Donahue, Orta Öğrenim Matematik Öğretmeni ESK olarak öğrencilerimizi dünya ve dünya üzerindeki rolleri üzerine; sadece kendi yaşamları ile ilgili yapacaklarını değil de, dünya geneline yapabilecekleri katkıları; daha geniş düşünmeye teşvik etmeye çalışıyoruz. Okul günleri süresince bir ders konusunda ötekine girip çıkarlarken, her dönem öğrencilere öğrendikleri bu şeylerin birbirleriyle nasıl ilişkilendirildiklerini ve uygulamada ne anlama geldiklerini düşünecekleri fırsatlar yaratmaya çalışıyoruz. Böylesi bir etkinlik 20 Aralık, Cuma günü düzenlediğimiz Moda Kutlaması günü çerçevesinde gerçekleşti. Gün öğrencilerin örgü örmeyi öğrendikleri (evet, ipad ve cep telefonlarını unutun, örgü 2014 ün yeni hobisi), gazete, plastik poşet ve şişe gibi atıl malzeme kullanarak giysi ve aksesuvar yaptıkları sabah atölye çalışmalarına katılmaları ile başladı. Moda endüstrisi üzerine iki sinema atölyesi de gerçekleşti: biri kumaş üretimi sektöründeki olanakları ve istismarı konu alırken, diğeri Mrs. Williamson un evsahipliği yaptığı ve modanın kadınlar hayatındaki yerini konu alan bir filmdi. İkinci seans öğrencilerin bu fikirlerini uygulamaya koymalarını gerektiriyordu; her takımdan dört model üzerinde karar verdikten sonra bu modelleri giydirdiler, görsel malzeme hazırladılar. Gün bazı IB öğrencilerimizin organize ettiği ve Mrs. Donohue tarafından sunuculuğu yapılan Moda Gösterisi ile zirvesine ulaştı. Zhanar Nur-Ahkmet (13. Sınıf) ve Olga Yashcenko (12. Sınıf) modellere saç tasarımlarının son rötüşlerini ve moda defilesi yürüyüşü üzerine tiyolar verdiler. Noah Swanson (10. Sınıf) liderliğinde bir ekip salonu, ışık ve ses sistemini hazırladı. Gösteri 6. Sınıf öğrencilerinin muhteşem geleneksel kıyafetler içerisinde sundukları Kıbrıs halk dansları ile başladı. Ardından, okulun son tiyatro oyunu Bir Yaz Gecesi Rüyası oyuncu kadrosunun Hint kostümleri içersinde tempolu Banghra ya dansederek, Ms. Keller in bu Shakespeare oyununu adaptasyonunun etkileyici başlangıcını sergilediler. Mrs. Donohue daha sonra gerçekleşen ne kadar iyiydiler değil mi yarışma programını sundu (peki, bu ünlü soruyu hatırlamak için belli bir yaşın üzerinde olmanız gerekiyor evet, ama yaşlı Brucie Strictly Come Dancing de hala sık sık kullanıyor onu). Öğrenci takımlarına, uzman öğretmenlerimizin (Ms. Damar, Mrs. Turnbull and Ms. Kadri) gösterdiği aksesuvar yapımı, yüz boyama ve saç tasarımını yeniden yapmak için bir dakika verildi. Moda defilesinde öğrencilerin arkadaşları için tasarladıkları harika kostümler duydukları coşku ve gayretin göstergesi oldu. Jurimiz yarışmanın galiplerini seçerken epeyce zorlanırken; yarışmanın birincilerini Sevgi Oscar ve Evrensel Sebep olarak belirlediler. Yarışma sonucunda Hannah Ruby ve ne giydiğin değil, kim olduğun önemli mankeni Uraz Şentürk özel mansiyon aldılar. Gün, 7. Sınıf öğrencileri Ahmet Atasoy, Mehmet Atasoy ve Berke Emerce ile ukelelede (Hawaii ye özgü dört telli bir saz) Mr. Phil Smith ve mandolinde Mr. Jutkiewicz in çaldığı şarkılarla son buldu. Müdürümüz Mr. Brian Smith personel olarak hepimizin hislerini özetledi: öğrencilerimiz yine yaratıcılık ve incelikli hünerlerle dolu kapasitelerini sergilemiş oldular. Bunun bu kadar başarılı bir etkinlik olması için canla başla çalışan tüm IB öğrencilerimize ve personelimize teşekkür ederiz.

Dan ve Çocuk Psikolojisi Uzmanı Sınav kaygısı, sınava girecek olan kişide sınav öncesinde kendini gösteren ve sınav sırasında devam ederek, bedensel, duygusal ve zihinsel değişimlerle kendini gösteren bir uyarılmışlık durumudur. Sınav öncesi duyulan kaygı doğal olan bir durumdur ve aşırı olmayan, yeterli düzeyde hissedilen kaygı, bireyin performansını yükseltir; zihni ikaz eder ve odaklanmayı kolaylaştırır. Aşırı kaygı ise, öğrenilen bilgilerin hatırlanmasını engellediği için sınav performansını düşürür. Kaygı problemi yaşayan birey, fizyolojik, bilişsel ve dugusal olarak etkilenmektedir. Fiziksel olarak kişi, genellikle kalp çarpıntısı, titreme, sıcak basması, bulantı, halsızlik yorgunluk gibi belirtilerden yakınır. Duygusal olarak, huzursuzluk duyar, endişe veya korku yaşar ve sinirlilik hali meydana gelir. Bilişsel anlamda ise, kişi sürekli kendine olumsuz yorumlarda bulunur (ör. ben başarısızım/yapamam vb.), düşüncelerini organize etmede, tümlemede ve ifade etmede zorlanır. Aşırı kaygı, zamanı etkili kullanamama, yanlış ders çalışma alışkanlıkları, mükemmeliyetçilik düşüncesi, başarısızlık korkusu veya aile baskısından kaynaklı olabilir. Aileler özellikle sınav döneminde, çocuklarına karşı farketmeden de olsa, aşırı yüklenebilir ve bu durum kaygı düzeyini arttırabilir. Aileler özellikle, kardeşler veya arkadaşlar arasında yaptıkları karşılaştırmalarla onların yetersiz olduğunun altını çizmektedirler. Sana güveniyoruz. Sen başaracaksın. Sende o potansiyel var. O nedenle, aileler çocukları ile yakın ilişkiler kurmalıdırlar. 21 Page 21 Test Anxiety By Süheyla Timuçin, Guid. Cons. and Child Psychology Specialist Exam anxiety is an excited state that affects the individual taking the exam mentally, physically and emotionally both before and during the exam. The anxiety an individual feels before an exam is normal and generally not extreme. In fact adequate exam anxiety can be beneficial for the individual by raising the standard of their performance; keeping them mentally alert and make it easier for them to focus. Conversely, extreme anxiety can affect the memory and lowers the standard of performance. Individuals that suffer from extreme anxiety problems mean that their mental, cognitive and emotional state will be affected. They may also be physically affected, the symptoms being heart palpitations, shivering, hot flushes, nausea, feeling tired and weak. Emotionally they tend to feel anxious, they may feel worried or even scared and anger could surface. Cognitıvely the individual will constantly doubt and feel negative about themselves (eg. I m a failure/ I can t do it), they will also have difficulty in organising, completing and verbalising their thoughts. Extreme anxiety can be caused by a number of reasons such as not being able to manage time effectively, having a habit of studying incorrectly, being a perfectionist, fear of failing and family pressure. During exam time families in particular without realising tend to put excessive pressure on their children causing their level of anxiety to rise even more. We believe in you. You will be successful. You have the potential. If you don t pass your exams you can forget your holiday. You can see the sacrifices we have made for you can t you? These type of statements are the type to cause extreme anxiety in students. Because of this families need to form close relationships with their children. They need to show them that they are special and they are proud of them for reasons other than their test results. Individuals that suffer from extreme test anxiety need to: Have a more systematical approach to revising and make a point not to leave everything to the last minute. Eliminate thoughts that will increase anxiety eg. It s impossible for me to pass this test. and replace it with more positive, realistic thoughts such as I am going to do everything I can to pass this exam. Make it a priority to eat well and sleep well. Do breathing exercises before going into the test and during as well. This will help keep the anxiety to a normal level. GOOD LUCK...

22 Page 22 Year 4 Student s Christmas Day Swim for Charity By Sue Tilt & Carole King, Tulips/Help Those With Cancer Association On the 25th December 2013 a Christmas Day Swim was organised in aid of Tulips/Help Those With Cancer Association at Kervansaray Beach. The swim took place at 11am with nine swimmers braving the cold waters, one of which was Isabella Partington (an ESK Year 4 student). Isabella was the only person of school age to attend. The total money raised by these nine brave swimmers was 3,351TL (which is a fantastic for just nine people)! We would like to thank ESK for allowing us to attend the school assembly to thank Isabella for taking part in our swim, and helping cancer patients with her efforts. Well done Isabella!

23 Page Sınıf Öğrencisinin Yardım İçin Noel Günü Yüzüşü Yazanlar Sue Tilt ve Carole King, Tulips Kanser Hastalarına Yardım Derneği 25 Aralık 2013 tarihinde Tulips Kanser Hastalarına Yardım Derneği yararına, Kervansaray sahilinde Noel Günü yüzüşü gerçekleşmiştir. Sabah 11:00 de gerçekleşen yüzüşün soğuk sulara meydan okuyan dokuz yüzücüsü arasında ESK 4. Sınıf öğrencisi Isabella Partington da bulunuyordu. Isabella, katılanlar arasında okul yaşında olan tek kişiydi. Bu dokuz cesur yüzücü ile o gün toplam 3,351TL yardım toplandı (ki bu sadece dokuz kişi oldukları düşünülürse harika)! Bizlere okul toplantısına katılıp Isabella ya yüzüşe katılıp bu çabası ile kanser hastalarına yardım ettiği için teşekkür etme olanağı veren ESK ya teşekkür ediyoruz. Aferin Isabella!

26 Page 26 Year 3 Save the Rainforest Performance 4 & 5 February 2014 On the 4th and 5th of February, Year 3 performed their wonderful show Save the Rainforest. After weeks of preparation and lots of hard work by all of the children involved the show was a massive success. It highlighted the need to care for the rainforests around the world, and gave the audience lots of information about the importance of rainforests. There was lots of excellent singing, acting and dancing creating a visual masterpiece for all. Well done to everyone that took part!!

27 Page Sınıf Yağmur Ormanını Kurtar Gösterisi 4 ve 5 Şubat ve 5 Şubat tarihlerinde 3. Sınıf öğrencileri Yağmur Ormanını Kurtar adlı harika gösterilerini sahnelediler. Haftalar süren hazırlıklar ve görev alan tüm çocukların yoğun çalışmaları sonucunda gösteri büyük bir başarı oldu. Oyun dünya genelindeki yağmur ormanlarını korumanın gerekliliğinin altını çizerken, seyirciye yağmur ormanlarının önemi hakkında pek çok bilgi verdi. Herkes için görsel bir şölene dönüşen oyunda bolca şarkı, oyunculuk ve dans vardı. Görev alan herkesi tebrik ederiz!!

28 Page 28 Games Con 25 January 2014 Great Part 2 s By Mr Seamus Donahue, Secondary Mathematics Teacher The Godfather (part 2); Toy Story 2; Games Con (part 2): bigger and better than last year! The Games Con was conceived last year by the Coding Club as a way pupils for to get together to pursue their interest in gaming in a safe, exciting environment. The hope is for it to turn it into an annual event with further activities intended throughout the year. Saturday 25 th January was the date of the bigger and better Games Con II. The Games Con team (led by Noah Swanson with Sam, Morgan, Jemal, Koray, Tariq, Vladimir, Caleb from Year 8, Deniz from Year 9 and Tumen from Year 10) kept over 70 ESK pupils fed and entertained all day. The food and drink was supplied courtesy of the Kaner Group, via their Coco Cola and Domino Pizza franchises. Over 600TL was raised which has been donated to the Helping Hands of ESK. Helping Hands will ensure these funds go to Miti Mingi School in Kenya via Build Africa.org. This year there were four tournaments. Atahan (Year 9) beat last year s winner, Kash (Year 11) in FIFA 14. Alara in Year 6 won the Just Dance 4 competition. Controversially Mr Janes won an all teacher Need for Speed final. I say controversially as it seems an amazing achievement to win after failing even to qualify at first. A big thanks is owed to the Kaner Group for their sponsorship, along with the ESK IT department for all their hard work; the kitchen staff and to all of the teachers who helped out. I hope you are all looking forward to Games Con (PART 3)!

Games Con etkinliği geçen yıl, öğrencilere biraraya gelmeleri ve bilgisayar oyunlarına olan ilgilerini güvenli ve heyecanlı bir ortamda yürütmeleri için Kodlama Kulübü tarafından yaratılmıştı. Bu etkinliği yıl boyunca devam eden başka etkinliklerle gelenekselleştirebilmeyi umut ediyoruz. 25 Ocak, Cumartesi daha büyük, daha geliştirilmiş Games Con II etkinliğinin gerçekleştiği gündü. The Games Con ekibi (Noah Swanson liderliğindeki, 8. Sınıftan Sam, Morgan, Jemal, Koray, Tariq, Vladimir, Caleb, 9. Sınıftan Deniz ve 10. Sınıftan Tumen) yaklaşık 70 ESK öğrencisini gün boyunca tok tutup eğlendirdi. Yiyecek ve içecekler, Coco Cola ve Domino Pizza bayilikleri aracılığı ile Kaner Grubu nun nazik müsaadesi ile temin edildi. Günde ESK Helping Hands Yardımseverlik Kulübüne bağışlanmak üzere 600TL üzerinde yardım toplandı. Helping Hands Yardımseverlik Kulübü bu bağışların Build Africa.org aracılığı ile Kenya daki Miti Mingi Okuluna ulaşması sağlanacaktır. Bu yıl dört turnuva yapıldı. FIFA 14 te Atahan (9. Sınıf) geçen yılın şampiyonu olan Kash ı (11. Sınıf) yendi. 6. Sınıf öğrencisi Alara Just Dance 4 yarışmasında birinci geldi. Mr Janes öğretmenler arasında gerçekleşen Need for Speed finalinin tartışmalı birincisi oldu. Tartışmalı darken, ilk başta katılma hakkı bile elde edemeyen birisi için bu oldukça şaşırtıcı bir galibiyet. Kaner Grubu na sponsörlükleri, ESK Bilgisayar Departmanı na yoğun çalışmaları, etkinlik boyunca yardımları için mutfak personeli ve tüm öğretmenlere teşekkür ederiz. Games Con (3. 30 Page 30 Last term the ESK Helping Hands Charity Club organized a photography contest in memory of our much missed colleague, teacher and friend, Paul Allen. The theme was Old Cyprus as we wanted to show newcomers the essence of our wonderful island. Despite the deadline being very tight we received some fantastic entries all of which reflected the uniquely Cypriot culture and history. The task to choose between the pictures was impossible; for 3 days the judges debated until finally it was decided to have 3 winners; an overall winner and two runners up. See for yourself how daunting the task was: Paul Allen Photography Competition We held an Oscars style event in the hall. The pictures were displayed and the winners announced. Mr Smith presented the overall winner, Beste Misirlisoy, with the Paul Allen Cup for Photography and she also received a small trophy which she will keep. The two runners up were Derin Eralp and Suhila El-Abbar. All the pictures including some of Mr Allen s own photographs have been collated into a beautiful calendar and are now being sold to raise funds for the charity that Mr Allen supported, Pro-Cancer Research Fund.

31 Page 31 Paul Allen Fotoğraf Yarışması Geçtiğimiz dönem ESK Helping Hands Yardımseverlik Kulübü, çok özlenen öğretmenleri, iş arkadaşları ve dost insan Paul Allen adına bir fotoğraf yarışması düzenledi. Yarışmanın teması, Kıbrıs a yeni gelenlere bu harika adanın ruhunu göstermek istedikleri için Eski Kıbrıs olarak belirlendi. Son katılım tarihinin yakın olmasına rağmen tümü de Kıbrıs kültürü ve tarihini özgün bir şekilde yansıtan muhteşem başvurular yapıldı. Fotoğraflar arasında seçim yapmakta çok zorlanan jüri üyelerinin 3 gün süren müzakereleri sonucunda 3 kazanan; bir genel birinci ile iki adet ikinci olmasına karar verildi. İşimizin ne kadar zor olduğunu gelin kendiniz görün: Yarışma sonrasında okulun Büyük Salonu nda Oscarlar tarzı bir ödül töreni düzenlendi. Tören sırasında fotoğrafların tümü gösterildi ve kazananlar açıklandı. Okul Müdürü Mr Smith genel birinci seçilen Beste Mısırlısoy a Paul Allen Fotoğrafçılık Kupası nı takdim etti, ayrıca kendisine hatıra olarak saklayabileceği küçük bir kupa da verildi. Yarışmanın ikincileri ise Derin Eralp ile Suhila El- Abbar dı. Beste receiving her award. Beste ödülünü alırken. Fotoğrafların tümü, kendisi de bir fotoğrafsever olan Paul Allen ın çektiği fotoğraflardan bazıları ile birlikte güzel bir takvim olarak birleştirmiş ve Mr Allen ın desteklediği Kanser Araştırma Vakfı na (Pro-Cancer Research Fund) bağış toplamak üzere satışa sunulmuştur.

32 Page 32 ESK Primary Student Council Elections 21 January 2014 By Cemal Aktansoy, Year 3 Teaching Assistant & ESK Student Council Leader The ESK Primary Student Council is a representative structure for students only, through which they act upon issues and concerns raised by their peers, working in partnership with school management, staff and parents for the benefit of the school and its students. A Student Council gives pupils the chance to voice their views & opinions about any issue in school. Two students from each year (1 boy & 1 girl) were to be elected to represent their peers. The voting system was separated into three different phases; the first phase was where each class were to nominate 4 candidates (2 boys & 2 girls) for a Class Election. Round Two consisted of a class election where fellow class pupils had a fair election to nominate 1 boy and 1 girl from each class, who would then move on to the third and final round where by the whole year level would have an election in which they voted for 1 boy and 1 girl to represent there year at the School Council. After a very overwhelming and exciting election period where each candidate made their speeches and presented it in front of their whole year, our 1 boy and 1 girl representatives where elected after a very fair voting system. The 8 School Council members where then presented a certificate on 21th January by Mrs Green at the Key Stage 2 assembly to identify their acceptance as a School Council Representative. Sınıf Öğretim Asistanı & ESK Öğrenci Konseyi Lideri ESK İlkokul Öğrenci Konseyi, sadece öğrencilerin temsiliyeti için oluşturulmuş, okul ile öğrencilerinin yararı adına ve akranlarının dile getirdiği konular ve sorunlar doğrultusunda okul idaresi, personeli ve veliler ile işbirliği içerisinde çalışan bir oluşumdur. Öğrenci Konseyi, öğrencilere okul içerisindeki herhangi bir konu ile ilgili olarak görüş ve fikirlerini dillendirmek için olanak tanır. Akranlarını temsil etmek üzere her yıl grubundan iki öğrenci (1 kız ve 1 erkek) seçilecekti. Seçim sistemi üç farklı süreçten oluştu: ilki, Sınıf Seçimi için her sınıfın 4 aday (2 kız ve 2 erkek) belirlemesi idi. İkinci turda gerçekleşen Sınıf Seçimi sırasında sınıf arkadaşları adil bir seçim sistemi ile, üçüncü ve son turda yarışacak 1 kız ve 1 erkek aday seçtiler. Üçüncü turda ise tüm yıl grubunun katıldığı ve Okul Konseyi bünyesi içerisinde kendilerini temsil edecek 1 kız ve 1 erkek öğrencinin seçimi yapıldı. Çok yoğun ve heyecanlı geçen seçimler sırasında her aday tüm yıl grubuna hitaben konuşmasını yaptıktan sonra, 1 kız ve 1 erkek öğrencinin seçidiği adil oylama sistemine geçildi. Seçilen 8 Okul Konseyi üyesine, 21 Ocak tarihinde gerçekleşen Yukarı İlkokul toplantısı sırasında Mrs Green tarafından Okul Konseyi Temsilcisi olarak kabullerini onaylayan sertifikaları sunuldu. 34 Page 34 Year 11 Business Trip 15 January 2014 By Mrs Askgul Suman, Secondary Business Teacher The trip to KMG provided an opportunity for students to gain an insight into the different forms of media used for advertising. They visited the different departments and had the opportunity to ask questions and observe practice. The Director s provided a warm welcome with refreshments and the opportunity for a question and answer session. Before the trip, Domino s pizza provided a brief to students requiring them to come-up with a promotional strategy to improve business during off-peak periods. Students were placed in teams and designed and presented promotional strategies to increase revenue for the new franchise store in Nicosia. On the day, the teams presented their promotional ideas and received feedback from Mr. Baha Yahya, Franchising Manager for the Kaner Group. The girls outshone the boys and received praise for their inspired promotions. Mr.Yahya also discussed the benefits and drawbacks of franchising and the difficulties that businesses can face when first starting up, especially in the TRNC. The tour ended with a delicious meal from Domino s.

Farklı departmanları ziyaret edip hem çalışmaları izlediler, hem de bazı sorular sordular. Yöneticiler öğrencileri içecek ikramları ile çok sıcak karşılarken soru cevap seansı için olanak yarattılar. Gezi öncesinde, Domino s Pizza öğrencilere kısa bir bilgilendirme sunup, onlardan talebin az olduğu dönemlerde işi artırmaya yönelik promosyon stratejileri geliştirmelerini istemişlerdi. Öğrenciler takımlara ayrıldıktan sonra, Lefkoşa daki yeni şubenin gelirini artıracak promosyon stratejileri tasarlayıp sunmaya yönelik çalışmalar yaptılar. Gezi gününde takımlar promosyon önerilerini Kaner Grubu nun Bayilik Müdürü sayın Baha Yahya ya sunup geribildirim aldılar. Kızlar ilham verici promosyon fikirleri ile övgüler alarak erkekleri gölgede bıraktılar. Sayın Yahya ayrıca bayiliğin avantajları ile dezavantajlarından; ve özellikle KKTC de, işe ilk başlarken işletmelerin karşılaşabilecekleri zorluklardan bahsetti. Gezi Domino s Pizza da yenen lezzetli bir yemekle son erdi.

36 Page 36 Magical Stage Puppet Theatre 23 & 31 January 2014 The Magical Stage Puppet Theatre visited our school on Thursday 23rd and 31st January to perform their new puppet theatre performance Easy Bread, which was derived from a tale from Belarus, taken from Ataol Behramoglu s book World Folk Tales. The children were fascinated with the performance and the characters in the story; the hardworking caring farmer, the lazy wolf looking for easy bread, the energetic prize winning horse, the romantic but forgetful lamb... However when asked at the end of the performance they all agreed that their favourite character was the very jolly and talkative Cypriot goose teyze (aunt goose)... Eight performances were held in the Hall and all Primary children had the opportunity to attend.

Çocuklar gösteri ve hikayedeki karakterler karşısında büyülendiler; çalışkan sevecen çiftçi, kolay ekmek arayan tembel kurt, enerji deposu ödüllü at, romantik ama unutkan kuzu... Ancak oyun sonunda kendilerine sorulduğunda hepsi en sevdikleri karakterin neşeli ve konuşkan Kıbrıslı kaz teyze olduğu konusunda hemfikir oldular... 39 Page 39 Emine Sömek Visits Our School 10 January 2014 By Mrs Güler Şahin, Primary Turkish Teacher To commemorate the anniversary of Dr. Fazıl Küçük and Raif Rauf Denktaş, we invited the author of Kıbrıs Türkünün Milli Mücadelesi (The Turkish Cypriots Struggle for Independence) Emine Sömek to our school. Emine Sömek, being a first hand witness of our recent history, gave our Year 5 students a history lesson they will not forget. She explained the Turkish communities struggles in a simple language which the children could understand. On behalf of ESK, we are incredibly grateful to Emine Sömek. Memorial Ceremony for Dr. Fazıl Küçük and Rauf Denktaş On Friday 10th January 2014 ESK students organised a Memorial Ceremony to remember Dr. Fazıl Küçük and Raif Rauf Denktaş. Both leaders lives and their service to the Turkish Cypriot Community was remembered. The audience listened very carefully as Year 10 student Seren Beyaz read an emotional poem which she had written and dedicated to Rauf Denktaş.

40 Page 40 Golden Diners By Mr. Aiden Roberts, Year 6 Teacher ESK has recently seen a re-vamp of the Primary dining experience with the introduction of the Merit Card System. Children have been encouraged to behave and act in a responsible manner with particular attention paid to the noise level. The system uses visual cue cards which are green, orange and red. If the pupils are behaving well and conversing at a acceptable level, their table is awarded a green card. This lets them know that all is great! If however, the noise level increases then an orange card may be placed on the table, which warns the children to speak quietly or behave in a more sensible manner. After an orange card has been shown, the children can adjust their volumes and go quickly back onto a green card but if they continue to be too loud then a red card is issued and the children instantly lose 10 minutes of their playtime. The system has be incredibly well received and a remarkable difference has been noticed by staff and pupils. As an extra reward, a Golden Diner s Card was also introduced which means that one table per year group can be selected each day for a special dining experience they have the privilege of smart table-cloths, flowers and vases, battery powered candles and holographic table mats. We have also arranged special Fun Friday events which include live music, entertainment and a light show.

41 Page 41 Altın Masa Uygulaması Yazan Mr. Aiden Roberts, 6. Sınıf Öğretmeni ESK geçtiğimiz haftalarda uygulanmaya konan Ödüllü Kart Sistemi ile İlkokul yemekhane saatlerini revizyondan geçirdi. Çocuklar, özellikle ses düzeyine dikkat çekilerek sorumlu davranışlarda bulunmak üzere teşvik edildiler. Sistem yeşil, turuncu ve yeşil renk olan görsel işaret kartlarını kullanmaktadır. Öğrenciler olumlu davranışlarda bulunuyor ve makul bir ses düzeyinde sohbet ediyorsa, masaları yeşil kart ile ödüllendirilmektedir. Bu onlara herşeyin harika gittiğini söylüyor! Fakat, eğer ses düzeyi yükselirse, masalarına, onları daha sessiz konuşmaları ya da daha sorumlu davranmaları yönünde uyanran turuncu kart konmaktadır. Turuncu kart konduktan sonra çocuklar ses düzeylerini alçaltıp hemen yeşil karta geri dönebilirler; ancak gürültü yapmaya devam ederlerse masalarına konan kırmızı kart ile otomatik olarak tenefüs saatlerinde 10 dakika kaybetmektedirler. Sistem çok iyi kabul görmüş ve hem personel hem de öğrenciler tarafından dikkat çekici bir fark gözlenmiştir. Ekstra bir ödül olarak Altın Masa Kartı uygulanmaya konmuştur; bu kartla her gün her yaş grubundan seçilen bir masa sık masa örtüsü, çiçekler ve vazolar, pille çalışan mumlar ve hologram tabak altlıklarıyla özel olarak hazırlanmış bir masada yemek yemeye hak kazanmaktadır. Aynı zamanda Eğlenceli Cumalar adı altında, canlı müzik performansı, eğlence ve bir ışık gösteri dahil, özel etkinlikler de gerçekleşmesi planlanmaktadır.

42 Page 42 Fun Fridays As a reward for the excellent dining hall behaviour of Primary School children a new tradition of Fun Fridays has been started. The idea is to introduce an extra treat for ESK s Primary school lunch-times with a live performance or event. To get us started, we were visited by Secondary School student and ESK rock star Ivan Fidrovskiy from Year 13. Ivan played and sung The Beatles classic favourite Yellow Submarine before delivering a stomping performance of Queen s We Will Rock You. Everyone joined in and the dining hall felt more like a concert hall. It was a simply brilliant occasion and a memorable way to start the new ESK tradition of Fun Fridays.

Düşüncemiz ESK İlkokul ögle yemeği saatlerinde canlı bir performans ya da etkinlikle çocuklara sevecekleri bir sürpriz hazırlamaktı. İlk etkinlik olarak Ortaokul-Lise Bölümü öğrencisi ve ESK rock yıldızı 13. Sınıf Ivan Fidrovskiy tarafından ziyaret edildik. Ivan önce Beatles grubunun sevilen klasiği Yellow Submarine şarkısını çalıp söyledikten sonra, çocukların da ayaklarını ve ellerini vurarak tempo tuttukları Queen grubunun We Will Rock You şarkısını seslendirdi. Herkesin eşlik ettiği etkinlikle yemekhane daha fazla bir konser salonunu andırdı. Bu harikulade bir etkinlik olmakla birlikte yeni ESK Eğlenceli Cumalar geleneğine unutulmaz bir başlangıç oldu.

44 Page 44 Year 3 Kyrenia Harbour Visit 30 & 31 October 2013 By Miss Megan Raeburn, Year 3 Teacher On Wednesday 30 th and Thursday 31 st October, Year 3 went on an exciting trip to Kyrenia Harbour. When we arrived we met Mr Cemal Okul, the harbour Quay Master, who was to be our guide for the day. First of all we went on a large ferry boat to eat our snack a very different experience from our usual snack time! We then went on a much bigger boat, which belonged to Eastern Mediterranean University. On this boat we saw where the cars drive on, the inside deck of the boat; and most excitingly, the captain s deck. The Captain of the ship explained to us that this is where they navigate the boat from, and we got to see the maps they use and all the different buttons and levers that help the boat to work. We also got to see the helipad where helicopters would land if the boat was in trouble. We learnt a lot on our trip and had a really great day out!

Sınıf öğrencileri Girne Limanı na heyecanlı bir gezi düzenlediler. Limana vardığımızda bizi, gün boyunca rehberimiz olacak olan limanın Rıhtım Amiri Cemal Okul karşıladı. İlk önce, yanımızda götürdüğümüz atıştırmalık yiyeceklerimizi yemek için büyük bir feribota bindik bu normal atıştırma saatlerimizden çok farklı bir deneyimdi! Daha sonra, Doğu Akdeniz Üniversitesine ait daha büyük bir gemiye bindik. Bu gemide arabaların alındığı yeri, geminin iç güvertesini, ve en heyecanlısı olarak Kaptan a ait güverteyi gördük. Geminin Kaptanı bizlere, orasının geminin idare edildiği yer olduğunu açıkladı ve kullandıkları pek çok farklı haritayı ve geminin çalışmasına olanak veren çok farklı düğme ve kumanda kollarını gösterdi. Aynı zamanda, geminin başı derde girdiği takdirde helikopterlerin iniş yapabileceği helikopter pistini görme olanağımız oldu. Bu gezide hep çok şey öğrendik, hem de çok iyi vakit geçirdik!

46 Page 46 ESK PE Department News By Mr. Craig Reece, Head of PE The ESK PE department are opening up a wide range of extra training sessions for students of all ages. The extra training will start with lunchtime clubs which currently include Fitness, Table tennis, Badminton and we will be pushing for Volleyball, Football and Basketball too. This is followed up by afterschool clubs in Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Fitness, Dance, Badminton and Swimming. These after -school clubs will now be focused training sessions angled towards dedicated pupils representing the ESK school team. If we get teams that attend regularly and are improving we will enter them for interschool fixtures in the next school year. For ESK to stay in line with the North Cyprus Ministry rules, students can represent the school in one of the following sports:- Football, Footsal (Indoor Football), Basketball, Badminton, Swimming, Volleyball and Tennis. Any student can take Athletics and Cross Country (road race) as additional options. There are 3 age groups that can play within the sports fixtures. These are the age groups for the school year 2013/14: Upper primary inclusive Lower secondary inclusive Upper secondary inclusive. We will also select a Pre Team for each sport this will consist of Year 3 and 4 students and they will start training ready for the Upper primary teams. The after-school club that you are selecting for your child will be vitally important because this is where the dedicated, sensible and talented students will be picked to represent their school. If at any time a student lacks the commitment or is breaking the schools procedures and policies then we have the right to take them out of the after-school training. The reports we make for the students within their PE lesson during the curriculum will also play a part in our selection process. An example of this would be constantly forgetting PE kit or poor behaviour. We do keep records of this and parents will be contacted. To show our commitment to improving the performance of our school teams, we will place extra training sessions where possible. During 2013 the PE department developed rapidly and produced 2 winning teams with the Lower secondary Boys and Girls. The Badminton team also came a very close second and third. I am very positive about our chances next year because we have extended our training to Monday s and Friday s. Our badminton players are showing vast improvement because of our stroke analysis techniques and multiple volunteering parents. Our PE department would not be able to function without our team of volunteers in Badminton and Volleyball so if there are any more qualified parents who would be interested helping take Basketball or Football please contact Mr. Reece in the PE department with details of your experience c.reece@englishschoolkyrenia.org.

47 Page 47 ESK PE Department News ESK are supporting the Esentepe Fun Run on the 6 th April 2014 which is in aid of Tulips charity. We would like to get as many students and parents from ESK to enter as possible. Applications, sponsorship forms and T-shirt applications will be available soon from Mr. Crebier in the PE department. The important upcoming sporting dates are:- Lower Secondary Girls Volleyball on 19 th and 26 th February. Lower Secondary Boys and Girls Basketball on 21 st February. Upper Primary, Lower Secondary and Upper Secondary Swimming Gala 10 th /11 th March. Primary Sports Days: Year 1 on 6 th May, Year 2 on 5 th May and Key Stage 2 Classes on 7 th and 8 th May (exact dates for each year group to be confirmed). Primary Sports Days will be held at the PERCINKARDESLER SPOR KOMPLEKSI, Bellapais. Secondary Sports Day on 3 rd April when year 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 students will travel to the Ataturk Stadium for the day. PE Uniform Information All Primary School students must get changed into their PE kit for their PE lessons. If they are unwell or injured then we will supply them with a bib and they will analyse performance and help the teacher. The school supply parents with the option of a full tracksuit and students do not take part in PE outside during the bad weather. It is hugely important that every student is involved during their PE lesson so that they can achieve their lessons Learning Objective and constant progression is made. Students should not wear tights under their shorts. Students should not wear school cardigans or jumpers during PE lessons. All students must wear ESK PE kit during after-school clubs. Diet and Nutrition Recommendation of a healthy diet in North Cyprus is very easy with the large amounts of fruits and vegetables on offer. In the UK they promote 5 a day which refers to 5 different fruits or vegetables consumed in a day. In China and Japan they promote 17 a day which is why they are so much healthier as a nation. Try and count at home to see how many you have in a day. Things that can help you achieve a higher fruit and vegetable count and a healthier lifestyle are fresh juices (NOT from a packet). This is where fruit and vegetables are made with a juice machine. Many recipes can be found from the internet. They are a great source of energy, healthier skin and silkier hair.

49 Page 49 Working and Studying By Julide Secer, TAL Teacher (Teaching Turkish as an Additional Language) Is working full- time and studying at the same time possible? Well, I have tried it and yes it is possible. Last year I completed IPGCE (International Post Graduate Certificate in Education) at the University of Nottingham with a Merit. The IPGCE focusses on the improvement of individual teaching practice, through critical reflection and action research. I attended a week of face-to-face introduction programmes in the UK, after which everything else was taught via distance learning. After completing my PGCE I am now studying towards gaining an MA in Education at the same university. The overall purpose of the Masters programme is to deepen and refine the capacity for critical reflection on teaching practice. My Masters will be completed in July Studying and also working full time is one of the hardest things in life. But with good management skills nothing is impossible. In life you never stop learning. I believe that learning is a lifelong process and we learn something new every day. Gaining a qualification in any subject, shows that you have knowledge in a certain area. The reason I chose to study online is that I wanted to take steps forward to improve my career. Although difficult, it is quite possible to balance your family, job and obligations while studying. I plan daily depending on my commitments for the week and try to stick to my plans. The holidays are a good chance for me to catch up and read articles in order to critically evaluate and answer the necessary questions. If I meet my goals, I reward myself. Furthermore, I found contacting friends on the online module motivating, as studying online it s conceivable to lose motivation easily. Working and studying is an excellent way to enhance your knowledge. Another advantage is that by providing real life insights and examples from your work experience, it can help you better understand your studies. Good time management is the key to success in studying online and working full time. If you wish to pursue your education then distance learning is a great way to do so! Caleb Ruby, Caleb Romans, Koray Ibrahim, Sami Kotak & Hannah Ruby who are all taught guitar by Victor Nechetov, played improvisation on electric guitar. Improvisation is a significant musical skill as it involves playing melody in a specific key from the top of their heads, which makes it a very unique talent. says Victor. The launch, which took place at Pine Bay Club Hotel on 4 th February, hosted the press and over fifty guests. A local TV channel is interested in interviewing the students about the experience and wants to film a live jam session. CD s are available for 20TL from the Secondary Music department. Many ESK students were fortunate enough to attend. King Rat Billy and the Ratettes were the baddies. The Ratettes tried to poison the audience! Every time they came on stage the audience booed and hissed, which was great. Alice Fitzwarren was played by Miss Simmons who teaches at ESK in Year 2. Fairy Bo Bells was played by Mrs Simmons, Miss Simmons s mum! Other favourite characters were Richard Whittington, Idle Jack and Sarah. The costumes were loved by all! The music was brilliant and you could hear Miss Simmons clearly which was wonderful. The performance was absolutely amazing and at the end some children and other teachers had to get on stage and dance Gangham Style! Miss Simmons said I m glad that everyone enjoyed it. ESK students were very pleased they had a chance to go and see the show. 54 Page Sınıfların Türkçe Kısa Film Projesi Yazan Mrs Meryem Gürkut, Orta Öğrenim Türkçe Öğretmeni 10. sınıf Türkçe sınıfı öğrencileri tarafından bu dönem okunan kitaplardan biri de Nobel Edebiyat ödülü kazanmış romanlardan biri olan Albert Camus imzalı Yabancı ydı. Eserin, öğrenciler tarafından kısa bir filmi de hazırlandı. Eserin Konusu: Meursault, Cezayir de yaşayan bir devlet memurudur. Annesinin ölümünden sonra eski iş arkadaşı Marie ile nışanlanır. Bu sırada oturduğu apartmanda Raymond ile tanışan Meursault onun Araplarla olan kan davasına yardım etmeyi kabul eder. Ani bir kararsızlık sonucu bir Arap ı öldürür ve birden kendini idam edilmenin döşeğinde bulur. İdam edilmeden önce hapishanede geçirdiği bu süreçte hayata ne kadar yabancılaştığını dile getirir. 10.
