2 2 Bediüzzaman Said Nursî The Third Word 1 - If you want to understand ص, what great profit and happiness lie in worship ق, and what great loss and ruin lie in vice and dissipation ى listen to and take heed of the following story which is in the form of a comparison: - One time, two soldiers received orders to proceed to a distant city. 1 O you people! Worship [Qur'an, 2:21]

3 THE THIRD WORD: Worship ÜÇÜNCÜ SÖZ: İbâdet 3 Üçüncü Söz 2 - İbadet, ne büyük bir ticaret ve saâdet ق ; fısk ve sefahet, ne büyük bir hasaret ve helâket olduğunu ى anlamak istersen ص, şu temsilî hikâyeciğe bak, dinle... - Bir vakit iki asker, uzak bir şehire gitmek için emir alıyorlar. 2 Ey insanlar! İbâdet edin

4 4 Bediüzzaman Said Nursî They set off and travelled together until the road forked. At the fork was a man who said to them : "The road on the right causes no loss at all, and nine out of ten of those who take it receive a high profit and experience great ease ( ح ). While the road on the left provides no advantages, and nine out of ten of its travellers make a loss. But they are the same as regards distance. Only there is one difference : those who take the left-hand road ن, which has no rules and no one in authority ى, travel without baggage and arms ( ز ). They feel an apparent lightness and deceptive ease. Whereas those travelling on the right-hand road ص, which is under military order, are compelled to carry ن. a kit-bag full of nutritious rations four kilos or so in weight and a superb army rifle of about two kilos which will overpower and rout every enemy..."

5 THE THIRD WORD: Worship ÜÇÜNCÜ SÖZ: İbâdet 5 Beraber giderler; tâ, yol ikileşir. Bir adam orada bulunur, onlara der : "Şu sağdaki yol, hiç zararı olmamakla beraber, onda giden yolculardan ondan dokuzu büyük kâr ve rahat görür ( ح ). Soldaki yol ise, menfaatı olmamakla beraber, on yolcusundan dokuzu zarar görür. Hem ikisi, kısa ve uzunlukta birdirler. Yalnız bir fark var ki : intizamsız, hükûmetsiz olan ى sol yolun yolcusu ن, çantasız, silâhsız gider ( ز ). Zahirî bir hıffet, yalancı bir rahatlık görür. İntizam-ı askerî altındaki sağ yolun yolcusu ص ise, mugaddi hülâsalardan dolu dört okkalık bir çanta ve her adüvvü alt ve mağlub edecek iki kıyyelik bir mükemmel mîrî silâhı taşımaya mecburdur ن."

6 6 Bediüzzaman Said Nursî After the two soldiers had listened to what this instructive man had to say, the fortunate one took the road to the right. HE LOADED the weight of ten kilos ONTO HIS BACK, but his heart and spirit were saved from thousands of kilos of fear and feeling obliged to others. As for the other, luckless, soldier, he left the army. He did not want to conform to the order, and he went off to the left. HE WAS RELEASED from bearing a load of ten kilos, but his heart was constricted by thousands of kilos of indebtedness, and his spirit crushed by innumerable fears. He proceeded on his way both begging from everyone and trembling before every object and every event ص until HE REACHED HIS DESTINATION. And there he was punished as a mutineer and a deserter. - As for the soldier WHO LOVED THE ORDER OF THE ARMY, had guarded his kit-bag and rifle, and taken the right-hand road,

7 THE THIRD WORD: Worship ÜÇÜNCÜ SÖZ: İbâdet 7 O iki asker, o muarrif adamın sözünü dinledikten sonra şu bahtiyar nefer, sağa gider. Bir batman ağırlığı omuzuna ve BELİNE YÜKLER. Fakat kalbi ve ruhu, binler batman minnetlerden ve korkulardan kurtulur. Öteki bedbaht nefer ise, askerliği bırakır. Nizama tâbi olmak istemez, sola gider. CİSMİ bir batman ağırlıktan KURTULUR, fakat kalbi binler batman minnetler altında ve ruhu hadsiz korkular altında ezilir. Hem herkese dilenci; hem her şeyden, her hâdiseden titrer bir surette ص gider. [ yetişene kadar] Tâ, MAHALL-İ MAKSUDA YETİŞİR. Orada, âsi ve kaçak cezasını görür. ASKERLİK NİZAMINI SEVEN, çanta ve silâhını muhafaza eden ve sağa giden NEFER ise, -

8 8 Bediüzzaman Said Nursî he had gone on his way being obliged to no one, fearing no one, and with an easy heart and conscience until he reached the city he was seeking. There he received a reward ف. worthy of an honourable soldier who had carried out his duty faithfully. - O rebellious soul, know that one of those two travellers represents those who submit to the Divine Law, while the other represents the rebellious and those who follow their own desires. The road is the road of life, which comes from the Spirit World, passes through the grave, and carries on to the Hereafter. As for the kit-bag and rifle, they are worship and fear of Allah [Allah-fearing behavior]. There is an apparent burden in worship, but there is an ease and lightness in its meaning that defies description. [in another word: can t be described]

9 THE THIRD WORD: Worship ÜÇÜNCÜ SÖZ: İbâdet 9 kimseden minnet almayarak, kimseden havf etmeyerek rahat-ı kalb ve vicdan ile gider. Tâ o matlub şehire yetişir. Orada, vazifesini güzelce yapan bir namuslu askere münasib bir mükâfat görür ف. - İşte ey nefs-i serkeş! Bil ki: O iki yolcu; biri, muti-i kanun-u İlahî, birisi de âsi ve hevaya tâbi insanlardır. O yol ise, hayat yoludur ki; âlem-i ervahtan gelip kabirden geçer, Âhirete gider. O çanta ve silâh ise, ibadet ve takvadır. İbadetin çendan zahirî bir ağırlığı var. Fakat manasında öyle bir rahatlık ve hafiflik var ki, tarif edilmez.

10 10 Bediüzzaman Said Nursî For in the prescribed prayers the worshipper declares, 3 THAT IS TO SAY : HE FINDS the door of a treasury of mercy in everything ( ق ) because of that he is believing and saying ( ى ), "THERE IS NO CREATOR AND PROVIDER OTHER THAN HIM. HARM AND BENEFIT ARE IN HIS HAND. HE IS BOTH ALL-WISE; HE DOES NOTHING IN VAIN, AND HE IS ALL-COMPASSIONATE; HIS BOUNTY AND MERCY ARE ABUNDANT." And HE KNOCKS ON the door with his supplication ص. Moreover, he sees that everything is subjugated to the command of his own Sustainer, so he takes refuge in Him [his Sustainer]. He places his trust in Him and relies [leans] on Him, and is fortified [protected] against every disaster; HIS BELIEF gives him complete confidence. 3 "I bear witness that there is no god (deity) but Allah."

11 THE THIRD WORD: Worship ÜÇÜNCÜ SÖZ: İbâdet 11 Çünki âbid, namazında der: 4 YANİ : "HÂLIK VE REZZAK, ONDAN BAŞKA YOKTUR. ZARAR VE MENFAAT, ONUN ELİNDEDİR. O HEM HAKÎM'DİR, ABES İŞ YAPMAZ. HEM RAHÎM'DİR; İHSANI, MERHAMETİ ÇOKTUR" diye itikad ettiğinden ( ى ) her şeyde bir hazine-i rahmet kapısını BULUR ( ق ). Dua ile ÇALAR ص. Hem her şeyi kendi Rabbisinin emrine müsahhar görür, Rabbisine iltica eder. Tevekkül ile istinad edip her musibete karşı tahassun eder. İMANI, ona bir emniyet-i tâmme verir. 4 "Ben şehâdet ederim ki, Allah tan başka hiçbir ilah yoktur."

12 12 Bediüzzaman Said Nursî Indeed, like with every true virtue ( ع ), the source of courage is belief in Allah, and worship. And as with every iniquity, the source of cowardice is misguidance. In fact, for a worshipper with a truly illuminated heart, it is possible that even if the globe of the earth became a bomb and exploded, it would not frighten him. He would watch it with pleasurable wonder as a marvel of the Eternally Besought One's power. But when a famous degenerate philosopher with a socalled enlightened mind but no heart saw a comet in the sky, he trembled on the ground, and exclaimed anxiously: "Isn't that comet going to hit the earth?" (On one occasion, America was quaking with fear at such a comet, and many people left their homes in the middle of the night.) Yes, MAN [mankind] is in need of numberless things, HIS CAPITAL IS AS NOTHING, and although he is subject to endless calamities, his power too is as nothing.

13 THE THIRD WORD: Worship ÜÇÜNCÜ SÖZ: İbâdet 13 Evet her hakikî hasenat gibi ( ع ) cesaretin dahi menbaı, imandır, ubudiyettir. Her seyyiat gibi, cebanetin dahi menbaı, dalalettir. Evet tam münevver-ül kalb bir âbidi, küre-i arz bomba olup patlasa, ihtimaldir ki, onu korkutmaz. Belki hârika bir kudret-i Samedaniyeyi, lezzetli bir hayret ile seyredecek. Fakat meşhur bir münevver-ül akıl denilen kalbsiz bir fâsık feylesof ise; gökte bir kuyruklu yıldızı görse, yerde titrer. "Acaba bu serseri yıldız Arzımıza çarpmasın mı?" der; evhama düşer. (Bir vakit, böyle bir yıldızdan Amerika Çokları gece vakti hanelerini terkettiler.) titredi. Evet İnsan, nihayetsiz şeylere muhtaç olduğu ; SERMAYESİ HİÇ HÜKMÜNDE... Hem nihayetsiz musibetlere maruz olduğu halde; iktidarı, hiç hükmünde bir şey...

14 14 Bediüzzaman Said Nursî Simply, his capital and power extend only as far as his hand can reach. However, his hopes, desires, pains, and tribulations reach as far as the eye and the imagination can stretch. - [ح] Anyone who is not totally blind can see and understand then ع bounty what a great profit, happiness, and for the human spirit, which is thus impotent and weak,, ] ز [ wanting and needy and are worship, affirmation of Allah's unity, and [ص] Him. reliance on Allah and submission to It is obvious that a safe way is preferable to a harmful way, even if the possibility of its safety is only one in ten. But on the way of worship, which our matter here, there is a nine out of ten possibility of it leading to the, ط treasury of eternal happiness. ن as well as its being safe

15 THE THIRD WORD: Worship ÜÇÜNCÜ SÖZ: İbâdet 15 Âdeta sermaye ve iktidarının dairesi, eli nereye yetişirse o kadardır. Fakat emelleri, arzuları ve elemleri ve belaları ise; dairesi, gözü, hayali nereye yetişirse ve gidinceye kadar geniştir. - Bu derece âciz ve zaîf, fakir ve muhtaç olan ruh-u ] ز [ beşere [ص] teslim; ibadet, tevekkül, tevhid,, ع olduğunu ne kadar azîm bir kâr, bir saadet, bir nimet. [ح] bütün bütün kör olmayan görür, derk eder Malûmdur ki: Zararsız yol, zararlı yola -velev on ihtimalden bir ihtimal ile olsa- tercih edilir. Halbuki mes'elemiz olan ubudiyet yolu, ن zararsız olmakla beraber ondan dokuz ihtimal ile bir saadet-i ebediye hazinesi. ط vardır

16 16 Bediüzzaman Said Nursî While it is established by the testimony -which is at the degree of consensus- of innumerable experts and witnesses that besides being without benefit ى, and the dissolute even confess to this, the way of vice and dissipation ends in eternal misery. According to the reports of those who have uncovered the mysteries of creation this is absolutely certain. - In Short: Like that of the hereafter ص, happiness in this world too lies in worship and being a soldier for Almighty Allah. In which case, we should constantly say: 5 and we should thank Him that we are Muslims... 5 "Praise be to Allah for obedience to him and success."

17 THE THIRD WORD: Worship ÜÇÜNCÜ SÖZ: İbâdet 17 Fısk ve sefahet yolu ise; -hattâ fâsıkın itirafıyla dahimenfaatsız olduğu halde ى, ondan dokuz ihtimal ile şekavet-i ebediye helâketi bulunduğu; icma ve tevatür derecesinde hadsiz ehl-i ihtisasın ve müşahedenin şehadetiyle sabittir. Ve ehl-i zevkin ve keşfin ihbaratıyla muhakkaktır. Elhasıl: Âhiret gibi ص, - dünya saadeti dahi, ibadette ve [Cenâb-ı] Allah'a asker olmaktadır. Öyle ise, biz daima 6 demeliyiz. Ve müslüman olduğumuza şükretmeliyiz. 6 "Bütün hamdler Allah a olsun, itaat ve tevfîkından dolayı."

Elinizdeki bu çalışmanın en hususi farkı: Cümledeki kısacık ifadeleri dahi karşı satırla birbirine tevâfuk ettirmesi; etmeyenleri ise renkler ve Arabca harflerle işaretler belirtmesidir (aynı ifadelere aynı işaret ve aynı renklerle).
