Metric Expressions Circuit quantities and component values have extreme ranges in electronic circuits. It is not uncommon to have values such as 1,200,000,000 Hz and F in the same circuit. For this reason, metric prefixes and engineering notation are used to simplify communications and computations.

Bit 0/1 den oluşan bilgi Bits are the units used to describe an amount of data in a network 1 kilobit (Kbit) = 1 x 10 3 bits = 1,000 bits 1 megabit (Mbit) = 1 x 10 6 bits = 1,000,000 bits 1 gigabit (Gbit) = 1 x 10 9 bits = 1,000,000,000 bits Bit/Saniye: Bit/sec 1 sn. ye de bir noktadan diğer noktaya iletilen bilgi. BPS (Bit Per Second); Saniyede iletilen bit sayısına BPS denir. Seconds are the units used to measure time 1 millisecond (msec) = 1 x 10-3 seconds = seconds 1 microsecond (msec) = 1 x 10-6 seconds = seconds 1 nanosecond (nsec) = 1 x 10-9 seconds = seconds Bits per second are the units used to measure channel capacity/bandwidth and throughput bit per second (bps) kilobits per second (Kbps) megabits per second (Mbps)

MIPS MIPS (Millions of Instructions Per Second saniyedeki milyon komut sayısı) bilgisayar işleme hız ölçüsüdür.

Sembol ASCII EBCDIC A B C Z !

Transmission Mode Simplex transmission: Only one way communication Half duplex transmission: Two ways communication, but one at a time; not simultaneously Full duplex transmission : Simultaneously in both directions Unicast, Multicast, Anycast, Broadcast

Microprocessor Pins and Signals

Common signals AD 0 -AD 15 (Bidirectional) Address/Data bus Low order address bus; these are multiplexed with data. When AD lines are used to transmit memory address the symbol A is used instead of AD, for example A 0 -A 15. When data are transmitted over AD lines the symbol D is used in place of AD, for example D 0 -D 7, D 8 -D 15 or D 0 -D 15. A 16 /S 3, A 17 /S 4, A 18 /S 5, A 19 /S 6 High order address bus. These are multiplexed with status signals 24

Common signals BHE (Active Low)/S 7 (Output) Bus High Enable/Status It is used to enable data onto the most significant half of data bus, D 8 -D bit device connected to upper half of the data bus use BHE (Active Low) signal. It is multiplexed with status signal S 7. MN/ MX MINIMUM / MAXIMUM This pin signal indicates what mode the processor is to operate in. RD (Read) (Active Low) The signal is used for read operation. It is an output signal. It is active when low. 25

Common signals TEST TESTinput is tested by the WAIT instruction will enter a wait state after execution of the WAIT instruction and will resume execution only when the TEST is made low by an active hardware. This is used to synchronize an external activity to the processor internal operation. READY This is the acknowledgement from the slow device or memory that they have completed the data transfer. The signal made available by the devices is synchronized by the 8284A clock generator to provide ready input to the The signal is active high. 26

Common signals RESET (Input) Causes the processor to immediately terminate its present activity. The signal must be active HIGH for at least four clock cycles. CLK The clock input provides the basic timing for processor operation and bus control activity. Its an asymmetric square wave with 33% duty cycle. INTR Interrupt Request This is a triggered input. This is sampled during the last clock cycles of each instruction to determine the availability of the request. If any interrupt request is pending, the processor enters the interrupt acknowledge cycle. This signal is active high and internally synchronized. 27

Min/ Max Pins The 8086 microprocessor can work in two operations : Minimum mode and Maximum mode. modes of In the minimum mode of operation the microprocessor do not associate with any co-processors and can not be used for multiprocessor systems. In the maximum mode the 8086 can work in multi-processor or co-processor configuration. Minimum or maximum mode operations are decided by the pin MN/ MX(Active low). When this pin is high 8086 operates in minimum mode otherwise it operates in Maximum mode. 28

Minimum mode signals Pins For minimum mode operation, the MN/ MX is tied to VCC (logic high) 8086 itself generates all the bus control signals DT/R (Data Transmit/ Receive) Output signal from the processor to control the direction of data flow through the data transceivers DEN (Data Enable) Output signal from the processor used as out put enable for the transceivers ALE M/IO (Address Latch Enable) Used to demultiplex the address and data lines using external latches Used to differentiate memory access and I/O access. For memory reference instructions, it is high. For IN and OUT instructions, it is low. WR INTA Write control signal; asserted low Whenever processor writes data to memory or I/O port (Interrupt Acknowledge) When the interrupt request is accepted by the processor, the output is low on this line. 29

Minimum mode signals Pins For minimum mode operation, the MN/ MX is tied to VCC (logic high) 8086 itself generates all the bus control signals HOLD Input signal to the processor form the bus masters as a request to grant the control of the bus. Usually used by the DMA controller to get the control of the bus. HLDA (Hold Acknowledge) Acknowledge signal by the processor to the bus master requesting the control of the bus through HOLD. The acknowledge is asserted high, when the processor accepts HOLD. 30

Maximum mode signals During maximum mode operation, the MN/ MX is grounded (logic low) Pins are reassigned S 0, S 1, S 2 Status signals; used by the 8086 bus controller to generate bus timing and control signals. These are decoded as shown. 31

Maximum mode signals During maximum mode operation, the MN/ MX is grounded (logic low) Pins are reassigned QS 0, QS 1 (Queue Status) The processor provides the status of queue in these lines. The queue status can be used by external device to track the internal status of the queue in The output on QS 0 and QS 1 can be interpreted as shown in the table. 32

Maximum mode signals During maximum mode operation, the MN/ MX is grounded (logic low) Pins are reassigned RQ/GT 0, RQ/GT 1 (Bus Request/ Bus Grant) These requests are used by other local bus masters to force the processor to release the local bus at the end of the processor s current bus cycle. These pins are bidirectional. The request ongt 0 will have higher priority thangt 1 LOCK An output signal activated by the LOCK prefix instruction. Remains active until the completion of the instruction prefixed by LOCK. The 8086 output low on the LOCK pin while executing an instruction prefixed by LOCK to prevent other bus masters from gaining control of the system bus. 33

CPU (CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT) MERKEZİ İŞLEM BİRİMİ CPU iki bölümden oluşur. Aritmetik ve Mantık Birimi (Arithmetic & Logic Unit -ALU) : Dört işlem, verilerin karşılaştırmak Kontrol Ünitesi ( Control Unit -CU) : Işlem akışını düzenler, komutları yorumlar ve bu komutların yerine getirilmesini sağlar. Mikro işlemcide temel parametre clock hızıdır. Clock speed(hızı): sayısal veri işlemede veriler 1 ve 0 dan oluşur. Verilerin işlemesinde clock a ihtiyaç vardır. Clock un periyodu veri uzunluğunda olmalıdır. Clock süreklidir. Data width (veri genişliği): 8,16,32,64 bit olarak karşımıza çıkar. Bellek birimi 8 bittir.

System Bus

A computer consists of 1) Central Processing Unit 2) Memory unit 3) Input/Output units 4) Buses 5) Address decoding units

Basic Operations Input data is to feed information which can be supplied by any person, environment or other computer. Processing data is manipulating data by performing calculations, sorting lists of words or numbers, drawing pictures. Storing data is for future retrieval and processing. Memory holds data that is waiting to be processed, and storage areas hold data permanently until the data is deleted. Output data is the result produced by a computer, which includes reports, documents, music, graphs and pictures.

System Bus The SYSTEM BUS connects the various components of a computer. A bus is a collection of wires. The busses carry address, data, and control information between the various unit. The bus consist of three parts: a) Address Bus (output) b) Data Bus (input - output) c) Control Bus (input - output)

Typical PC Interconnections Bus interface bridges connect different bus types 7-54

Bus Interconnection Scheme

Data bus (Write /Read to memory or I/O units) 8-bits (8088) 16-bits (8086 /80286 /80386SX/SL/SLC/EX) 32-bits (80386DX / /Pentium) 64-bits (Pentium Pro /II /III) 128-bits 256-bits

Address Buses Adres yolu, bilginin bulunduğu yeri işaret eder. They are incorporated into the system to address the memory and the I/O equipment. Address buses in various microprocessors differ only in width (numbers). Most address buses are three-state connections, which will goto their high- impedance state at sometime during normal microprocessor operation. n-bit address bus is addressed 2 n address locations from 0 to 2 n-1. If I/O, a value between 0000H and FFFFH is issued. If memory, it depends on the architecture: 20-bits (8086/8088) 24-bits (80286/80386X) 32-bits (80386DX / /Pentium) 36-bits (Pentium Pro/II/III)

Adress Buses The address bus width in bits is based on the microprocessor chip family. Each time a bit is added to the address bus width, the amount of memory (RAM: Random Access Memory) that can be addressed is doubled. 4 bit addresses allow the addressing of 16 bytes of memory (and extra work is necessary to address 256 bytes of memory). 8 bits allow the addressing of 256 bytes of memory (and extra work is necessary to address 65,536 bytes of memory). 16 bits can address 65,536 bytes of memory. 32 bits can address 4,294,967,296 bytes of memory (about 4 billion bytes).

Control Bus Control and timing information Determines what modules can use the data and address lines If a module wants to send data, it must (1) obtain permission to use the bus, and (2) transfer data which might be a request for another module to send data Typical control lines Memory read Memory write I/O read I/O write Interrupt request Interrupt ACK Bus Request Bus Grant Clock signals

Control Signals Clock One micro-instruction (or set of parallel micro-instructions) per clock cycle Instruction register Op-code for current instruction Determines which micro-instructions are performed Flags State of CPU Results of previous operations From control bus Interrupts Acknowledgements

Control Signals - output Within CPU Cause data movement Activate specific functions Via control bus To memory To I/O modules

BUS INTERFACE UNIT (BIU)

Bus Interface Unit (BIU) Segment Registers 1-megabyte memory is divided into segments of up to 64K bytes each. The directly address four segments (256 K bytes within the 1 M byte of memory) at a particular time. Programs obtain access to code and data in the segments by changing the segment register content to point to the desired segments. 74

Bus Interface Unit (BIU) Segment Registers Code Segment Register 16-bit CS contains the base or start of the current code segment; IP contains the distance or offset from this address to the next instruction byte to be fetched. BIU computes the 20-bit physical address by logically shifting the contents of CS 4-bits to the left and then adding the 16-bit contents of IP. That is, all instructions of a program are relative to the contents of the CS register multiplied by 16 and then offset is added provided by the IP. Instruction Pointer 16-bit Always points to the next instruction to be executed within the currently executing code segment. So, this register contains the 16-bit offset address pointing to the next instruction code within the 64Kb of the code segment area. Its content is automatically incremented as the execution of the next instruction takes place. 75

Bus Interface Unit (BIU) Segment Registers Data Segment Register 16-bit Points to the current data segment; operands for most instructions are fetched from this segment. The 16-bit contents of the Source Index (SI) or Destination Index (DI) or a 16-bit displacement are used as offset for computing the 20-bit physical address. Stack Segment Register 16-bit Points to the current stack. The 20-bit physical stack address is calculated from the Stack Segment (SS) and the Stack Pointer (SP) for stack instructions such as PUSH and POP. In based addressing mode, the 20-bit physical stack address is calculated from the Stack segment (SS) and the Base Pointer (BP). Extra Segment Register 16-bit Points to the extra segment in which data (in excess of 64K pointed to by the DS) is stored. String instructions use the ES and DI to determine the 20-bit physical address for the destination. 76

Bus Interface Unit (BIU) Instruction queue A group of First-In-First-Out (FIFO) in which up to 6 bytes of instruction code are pre fetched from the memory ahead of time. This is done in order to speed up the execution by overlapping instruction fetch with execution. This mechanism is known as pipelining. 77

Segment Registers Bellek başlangıç adresini gösteren saklayıcılardır. CS - points at the segment containing the current program. DS - generally points at segment where variables are defined. ES - extra segment register, it's up to a coder to define its usage. SS - points at the segment containing the stack.

EXECUTION UNIT

Execution Unit The Execution Unit (EU) has Control unit Instruction decoder Arithmetic and Logical Unit (ALU) General registers Flag register Pointers Index registers

Execution Unit (EU) EU decodes and executes instructions. A decoder in the EU control system translates instructions. 16-bit ALU for performing arithmetic and logic operation Four general purpose registers(ax, BX, CX, DX); Pointer registers (Stack Pointer, Base Pointer); and Index registers (Source Index, Destination Index) each of 16-bits Some of the 16 bit registers can be used as two 8 bit registers as : AX can be used as AH and AL BX can be used as BH and BL CX can be used as CH and CL DX can be used as DH and DL 81

Execution Unit (EU) EU Registers Accumulator Register (AX) Consists of two 8-bit registers AL and AH, which can be combined together and used as a 16-bit register AX. AL in this case contains the low order byte of the word, and AH contains the high-order byte. The I/O instructions use the AX or AL for inputting / outputting 16 or 8 bit data to or from an I/O port. Multiplication and Division instructions also use the AX or AL. Base Register (BX) Consists of two 8-bit registers BL and BH, which can be combined together and used as a 16-bit register BX. BL in this case contains the low-order byte of the word, and BH contains the high-order byte. This is the only general purpose register whose contents can be used for addressing the 8086 memory. All memory references utilizing this register content for addressing use DS as the default segment register. 82

Execution Unit (EU) EU Registers Counter Register (CX) Consists of two 8-bit registers CL and CH, which can be combined together and used as a 16-bit register CX. When combined, CL register contains the low order byte of the word, and CH contains the high-order byte. Instructions such as SHIFT, ROTATE and LOOP use the contents of CX as a counter. Example: The instruction LOOP START automatically decrements CX by 1 without affecting flags and will check if [CX] = 0. If it is zero, 8086 executes the next instruction; otherwise the 8086 branches to the label START. 83

Execution Unit (EU) EU Registers Data Register (DX) Consists of two 8-bit registers DL and DH, which can be combined together and used as a 16-bit register DX. When combined, DL register contains the low order byte of the word, and DH contains the high-order byte. Used to hold the high 16-bit result (data) in 16 X 16 multiplication or the high 16-bit dividend (data) before a division and the 16-bit reminder after division. 84

8086 Microprocessor Execution Unit (EU) Architecture EU Registers Stack Pointer (SP) and Base Pointer (BP) SP and BP are used to access data in the stack segment. SP is used as an offset from the current SS during execution of instructions that involve the stack segment in the external memory. SP contents are automatically updated (incremented/ decremented) due to execution of a POP or PUSH instruction. BP contains an offset address in the current SS, which is used by instructions utilizing the based addressing mode. Source Index (SI) and Destination Index (DI) Used in indexed addressing. Instructions that process data strings use the SI and DI registers together with DS and ES respectively in order to distinguish between the source and destination addresses. 85

FLAGS

Flags Overflow Direction Interrupt enable Auxiliary flag Parity flag Carry flag Trap Zero 6 are status flags 3 are control flag Sign

Execution Unit (EU) Flag Register Auxiliary Carry Flag This is set, if there is a carry from the lowest nibble, i.e, bit three during addition, or borrow for the lowest nibble, i.e, bit three, during subtraction. Carry Flag This flag is set, when there is a carry out of MSB in case of addition or a borrow in case of subtraction. Sign Flag Zero Flag Parity Flag This flag is set, when the result of any computation is negative This flag is set, if the result of the computation or comparison performed by an instruction is zero This flag is set to 1, if the lower byte of the result contains even number of 1 s ; for odd number of 1 s set to zero OF DF IF TF SF ZF AF PF CF Over flow Flag This flag is set, if an overflow occurs, i.e, if the result of a signed operation is large enough to accommodate in a destination register. The result is of more than 7-bits in size in case of 8- bit signed operation and more than 15-bits in size in case of 16-bit sign operations, then the overflow will be set. Tarp Flag If this flag is set, the processor enters the single step execution mode by generating internal interrupts after the execution of each instruction Direction Flag This is used by string manipulation instructions. If this flag bit is 0, the string is processed beginning from the lowest address to the highest address, i.e., auto incrementing mode. Otherwise, the string is processed from the highest address towards the lowest address, i.e., auto incrementing mode. Interrupt Flag Causes the 8086 to recognize external mask interrupts; clearing IF disables these interrupts. 90

Memory

MEMORY ORGANIZATION Memory Hierarchy Main Memory Auxiliary Memory Associative Memory Cache Memory Virtual Memory Memory Management Hardware` 92

Memory Hierarchy The main memory occupies a central position by being able to communicate directly with the CPU and with auxiliary memory devices through an I/O processor A special very-high-speed memory called cache is used to increase the speed of processing by making current programs and data available to the CPU at a rapid rate 93

Memory Hierarchy CPU logic is usually faster than main memory access time, with the result that processing speed is limited primarily by the speed of main memory The cache is used for storing segments of programs currently being executed in the CPU and temporary data frequently needed in the present calculations The typical access time ratio between cache and main memory is about 1to7 Auxiliary memory access time is usually 1000 times that of main memory 94

Memory Main memory consists of a number of storage locations, each of which is identified by a unique address The ability of the CPU to identify each location is known as its addressability Each location stores a word i.e. the number of bits that can be processed by the CPU in a single operation. Word length may be typically 16, 24, 32 or as many as 64 bits. A large word length improves system performance, though may be less efficient on occasions when the full word length is not used 95

MEMORY HIERARCHY Memory Hierarchy Memory Hierarchy is to obtain the highest possible access speed while minimizing the total cost of the memory system Auxiliary memory Magnetic tapes Magnetic disks I/O processor CPU Main memory Cache memory Register Cache Main Memory Magnetic Disk Magnetic Tape 96

Memory Memory is a place to where the programs and data are loaded in order to be executed. RAM ( Random Access Memory ) and ROM ( Read Only Memory ). RAM is read /write memory while ROMisread-onlymemory; RAM is volatile, (the contents are lost when power is removed ) while ROM is nonvolatile (the contents are not lost when power is removed). Dynamic Ram (DRAM), Static RAM (SRAM), Cache, Read only memory (ROM), Flash Memory,...

Random-Access Memory (RAM) Static RAM (SRAM) Each cell stores bit with a six-transistor circuit. Retains value indefinitely, as long as it is kept powered. Relatively insensitive to disturbances such as electrical noise. Faster and more expensive than DRAM. Dynamic RAM (DRAM) Each cell stores bit with a capacitor and transistor. Value must be refreshed every ms. Sensitive to disturbances. Slower and cheaper than SRAM. 98

ROM ROM is used for storing programs that are PERMENTLY resident in the computer and for tables of constants that do not change in value once the production of the computer is completed The ROM portion of main memory is needed for storing an initial program called bootstrap loader, witch is to start the computer software operating when power is turned off 99

Main Memory Most of the main memory in a general purpose computer is made up of RAM integrated circuits chips, but a portion of the memory may be constructed with ROM chips RAM Random Access memory In tegated RAM are available in two possible operating modes, Static and Dynamic ROM Read Only memory 100

Main Memory A RAM chip is better suited for communication with the CPU if it has one or more control inputs that select the chip when needed The Block diagram of a RAM chip is shown next slide, the capacity of the memory is 128 words of 8 bits (one byte) per word 101

RAM 102

ROM 103

Cache memory If the active portions of the program and data are placed in a fast small memory, the average memory access time can be reduced, Thus reducing the total execution time of the program Such a fast small memory is referred to as cache memory The cache is the fastest component in the memory hierarchy and approaches the speed of CPU component When CPU needs to access memory, the cache is examined If the word is found in the cache, it is read from the fast memory If the word addressed by the CPU is not found in the cache, the main memory is accessed to read the word 104

Cache memory The performance of cache memory is frequently measured in terms of a quantity called hit ratio When the CPU refers to memory and finds the word in cache, it is said to produce a hit Otherwise, it is a miss Hit ratio = hit / (hit+miss) The basic characteristic of cache memory is its fast access time, Therefore, very little or no time must be wasted when searching the words in the cache The transformation of data from main memory to cache memory is referred to as a mapping process, there are three types of mapping: Associative mapping Direct mapping Set-associative mapping 105

Cache memory To help understand the mapping procedure, we have the following example: 106

Memory Mapping

Memory, I/O Mapping Primary or Main Memory Storage area which can be directly accessed by microprocessor Store programs and data prior to execution Should not have speed disparity with processor Semi Conductor memories using CMOS technology ROM, EPROM, Static RAM, DRAM Secondary Memory Storage media comprising of slow devices such as magnetic tapes and disks Hold large data files and programs: Operating system, compilers, databases, permanent programs etc. Memory mapping, I/O mapping When memory mapping is used for I/O devices, full memory address space cannot be used for addressing memory.

Memory Address Generation The BIU has a dedicated adder for determining physical memory addresses Offset Value (16 bits) Segment Register (16 bits) Adder Physical Address (20 Bits)

Intel Example Address Calculation If the data segment starts at location 1000h and a data reference contains the address 29h where is the actual data? 2 9 Offset: Segment: Address:

Segment:Offset Address Logical Address is specified as segment:offset Physical address is obtained by shifting the segment address 4 bits to the left and adding the offset address Thus the physical address of the logical address A4FB:4872 is A4FB A9822

The Code Segment 0H CS: 0400H 4000H IP 0056H 4056H CS:IP = 400:56 Logical Address Segment Register Memory Offset Physical or Absolute Address 04056H 0FFFFFH The offset is the distance in bytes from the start of the segment. The offset is given by the IP for the Code Segment. Instructions are always fetched with using the CS register. The physical address is also called the absolute address.

The Data Segment 0H DS: 05C0 05C00H SI C50H DS:EA Segment Register 05C0 0 Memory Offset Physical Address 05C50H 0FFFFFH Data is usually fetched with respect to the DS register. The effective address (EA) is the offset. The EA depends on the addressing mode.

The Stack Segment 0H SS: 0A00 0A000H SP A100H SS:SP Segment Register 0A00 0 Memory Offset Physical Address 0A100H 0FFFFFH The offset is given by the SP register. The stack is always referenced with respect to the stack segment register. The stack grows toward decreasing memory locations. The SP points to the last or top item on the stack. PUSH - pre-decrement the SP POP - post-increment the SP

Memory Address Map Memory Address Map is a pictorial representation of assigned address space for each chip in the system To demonstrate an example, assume that a computer system needs 512 bytes of RAM and 512 bytes of ROM The RAM have 128 byte and need seven address lines, where the ROM have 512 bytes and need 9 address lines 116

Memory Address Map 117

Memory Address Map The hexadecimal address assigns a range of hexadecimal equivalent address for each chip Line 8 and 9 represent four distinct binary combination to specify which RAM we chose When line 10 is 0, CPU selects a RAM. And when it s 1, it selects the ROM 118

Direct Mapping Associative memory is expensive compared to RAM In general case, there are 2^k words in cache memory and 2^n words in main memory (in our case, k=9, n=15) The n bit memory address is divided into two fields: k-bits for the index and n-k bits for the tag field 119

I/O read/write The I/O read and write operations are similar to the memory read and write operations. A processor may use: memory mapped I/O (when the address of the I/O device is in the direct memory space, and the sequence to read/write data in the device are the same with the memory read/write sequence) isolated I/O the process is similar, but the processor has a second set of control signals to make the distinction between a memory access and an I/O access (memory locations and I/O devices can be located at the same address, which makes this extra control signal necessary); for I/O operations, the processor holds IO/M (or similar) signal high for the duration of the I/O operation

Addressing Modes Immediate Direct Indirect Register Register Indirect Displacement (Indexed) Stack 136

Every instruction of a program has to operate on a data. The different ways in which a source operand is denoted in an instruction are known as addressing modes. 1. Register Addressing 2. Immediate Addressing Group I : Addressing modes for register and immediate data 3. Direct Addressing 4. Register Indirect Addressing 5. Based Addressing 6. 140 Memory Access Offset Value (16 bits) Segment Register (16 bits) Adder Physical Address (20 Bits) 140

Memory Access To access memory we use these four registers: BX, SI, DI, BP Combining these registers inside [ ] symbols, we can get different memory locations (Effective Address, EA) Supported combinations: [BX + SI] [BX + DI] [BP + SI] [BP + DI] [SI] [DI] d16 (variable offset only) [BX] [BX + SI + d8] [BX + DI + d8] [BP + SI + d8] [BP + DI + d8] [SI + d8] [DI + d8] [BP + d8] [BX + d8] [BX + SI + d16] [BX + DI + d16] [BP + SI + d16] [BP + DI + d16] [SI + d16] [DI + d16] [BP + d16] [BX + d16] BX BP SI DI + disp 141

Memory Access 20 Address lines 8086 can address up to 2 20 = 1M bytes of memory However, the largest register is only 16 bits Physical Address will have to be calculated Physical Address : Actual address of a byte in memory. i.e. the value which goes out onto the address bus. Memory Address represented in the form Seg : Offset (Eg - 89AB:F012) Each time the processor wants to access memory, it takes the contents of a segment register, shifts it one hexadecimal place to the left (same as multiplying by ), then add the required offset to form the 20- bit address 16 bytes of contiguous memory 89AB : F012 89AB 89AB0 (Paragraph to byte 89AB x 10 = 89AB0) F012 0F012 (Offset is already in byte unit) AC2 (The absolute address) 142

1. Register Addressing 2. Immediate Addressing 3. Direct Addressing 4. Register Indirect Addressing 5. Based Addressing 6. Indexed Addressing 7. Based Index Addressing 8. String Addressing 9. Direct I/O port Addressing 10. Indirect I/O port Addressing Here, the effective address of the memory location at which the data operand is stored is given in the instruction. The effective address is just a 16-bit number written directly in the instruction. Example: MOV BX, [1354H] MOV BL, [0400H] The square brackets around the 1354 H denotes the contents of the memory location. When executed, this instruction will copy the contents of the memory location into BX register. This addressing mode is called direct because the displacement of the operand from the segment base is specified directly in the instruction. 11. Relative Addressing 12. Implied Addressing 143

1. Register Addressing 2. Immediate Addressing 3. Direct Addressing 4. Register Indirect Addressing 5. Based Addressing 6. Indexed Addressing 7. Based Index Addressing 8. String Addressing 9. Direct I/O port Addressing 10. Indirect I/O port Addressing 11. Relative Addressing 12. Implied Addressing In Register indirect addressing, name of the register which holds the effective address (EA) will be specified in the instruction. Registers used to hold EA are any of the following registers: BX, BP, DI and SI. Content of the DS register is used for base address calculation. Example: MOV CX, [BX] Operations: EA = (BX) BA = (DS) x MA = BA + EA (CX) (MA) or, (CL) (MA) (CH) (MA +1) Note : Register/ memory enclosed in brackets refer to content of register/ memory 144

1. Register Addressing 2. Immediate Addressing 3. Direct Addressing 4. Register Indirect Addressing 5. Based Addressing 6. Indexed Addressing 7. Based Index Addressing 8. String Addressing 9. Direct I/O port Addressing 10. Indirect I/O port Addressing 11. Relative Addressing 12. Implied Addressing In Based Addressing, BX or BP is used to hold the base value for effective address and a signed 8-bit or unsigned 16-bit displacement will be specified in the instruction. In case of 8-bit displacement, it is sign extended to 16-bit before adding to the base value. When BX holds the base value of EA, 20-bit physical address is calculated from BX and DS. When BP holds the base value of EA, BP and SS is used. Example: MOV AX, [BX + 08H] Operations: 0008 H 08 H (Sign extended) EA = (BX) H BA = (DS) x MA = BA + EA (AX) (MA) or, (AL) (MA) (AH) (MA + 1) 145

Direct I/O port Addressing 10. Indirect I/O port Addressing 11. Relative Addressing 12. Implied Addressing SI or DI register is used to hold an index value for memory data and a signed 8-bit or unsigned 16-bit displacement will be specified in the instruction. Displacement is added to the index value in SI or DI register to obtain the EA. In case of 8-bit displacement, it is sign extended to 16-bit before adding to the base value. Example: MOV CX, [SI + 0A2H] Operations: FFA2 H A2 H (Sign extended) EA = (SI) + FFA2 H BA = (DS) x MA = BA + EA (CX) (MA) or, (CL) (MA) (CH) (MA + 1) 146

Direct I/O port Addressing 10. Indirect I/O port Addressing 11. Relative Addressing In Based Index Addressing, the effective address is computed from the sum of a base register (BX or BP), an index register (SI or DI) and a displacement. Example: MOV DX, [BX + SI + 0AH] Operations: 000A H 0A H (Sign extended) EA = (BX) + (SI) + 000A H BA = (DS) x MA = BA + EA (DX) (MA) or, (DL) (MA) (DH) (MA + 1) 12. Implied Addressing 147

1. Register Addressing 2. Immediate Addressing 3. Direct Addressing 4. Register Indirect Addressing 5. Based Addressing 6. Indexed Addressing 7. Based Index Addressing 8. String Addressing 9. Direct I/O port Addressing 10. Indirect I/O port Addressing 11. Relative Addressing 12. Implied Addressing Note : Effective address of the Extra segment register Employed in string operations to operate on string data. The effective address (EA) of source data is stored in SI register and the EA of destination is stored in DI register. Segment register for calculating base address of source data is DS and that of the destination data is ES Example: MOVS BYTE Operations: Calculation of source memory location: EA = (SI) BA = (DS) x MA = BA + EA Calculation of destination memory location: EA E = (DI) BA E = (ES) x MA E = BA E + EA E (MAE) (MA) If DF = 1, then (SI) (SI) 1 and (DI) = (DI) - 1 If DF = 0, then (SI) (SI) +1 and (DI) = (DI)

Direct I/O port Addressing 10. Indirect I/O port Addressing These addressing modes are used to access data from standard I/O mapped devices or ports. In direct port addressing mode, an 8-bit port address is directly specified in the instruction. Example: IN AL, [09H] Operations: PORT addr = 09 H (AL) (PORT) Content of port with address 09 H is moved to AL register In indirect port addressing mode, the instruction will specify the name of the register which holds the port address. In 8086, the 16-bit port address is stored in the DX register. Example: OUT [DX], AX 11. Relative Addressing 12. Implied Addressing Operations: PORT addr = (DX) (PORT) (AX) Content of AX is moved to port by DX register. whose address is specified 149

1. Register Addressing 2. Immediate Addressing 3. Direct Addressing 4. Register Indirect Addressing 5. Based Addressing 6. Indexed Addressing 7. Based Index Addressing 8. String Addressing 9. Direct I/O port Addressing 10. Indirect I/O port Addressing 11. Relative Addressing 12. Implied Addressing In this addressing mode, the effective address of a program instruction is specified relative to Instruction Pointer (IP) by an 8-bit signed displacement. Example: JZ 0AH Operations: 000A H 0A H If ZF = 1, then EA = (IP) + 000A H BA = (CS) x MA = BA + EA (sign extend) If ZF = 1, then the program control jumps to new address calculated above. If ZF = 0, then next instruction of the program is executed. 150

1. Register Addressing 2. Immediate Addressing 3. Direct Addressing 4. Register Indirect Addressing Instructions using this mode have no operands. 152 Instructions

Assembly language Assembly language is a low level programming language.

Instruction types Instructions fall into several broad categories that you should be familiar with: Data movement. Arithmetic. Boolean. Bit manipulation. I/O. Control transfer. Special purpose. 156

CPU Function Instruction cycle The instruction cycle is the procedure of processing an instruction by the microprocessor: Fetches (reads) the instruction from the memory Decodes the instruction, determining which instruction is to be executed (what instruction has been fetched) Executes the instruction performs the operations necessary to complete what the instruction is suppose to do (different from instruction to instruction, may read data from memory, may write data to memory or I/O device, perform only operations within CPU or combination of those) Each of the functions fetch -> decode -> execute consist of a sequence of one or more operations inside the CPU (and interaction with the subsystems)

Fetch Cycle In the first phase, the processor generates the necessary timing signals to fetch the next instruction from the memory system. The instruction is transferred from memory to an internal location inside the processor (the instruction register) In the above image, the processor is ready to begin the Fetch cycle. The current contents of the instruction counter (program counter) is address This value is placed on the address bus, and a READ signal is activated on the control bus. The memory receives this and finds the contents of the memory location 0100, which happens to be the instruction MOV AX, 0. The memory places the instruction on the Data Bus, and the processor then copies the instruction from the Data Bus to the Instruction Register.

Decode Cycle The processor transfers the instruction from the instruction register to the Decode Unit. It compares the instruction to an internal table, and when a match is found, the table contains the list of macro instructions (a number of steps) which are required to perform the instruction. In our case, the instruction means place the value 0 into the AX register. The decode unit now has all the details of how to do this. During this phase the processor (if required by the instruction) will get any operand's required by the instruction. The final effect of instruction MOV AX, 0 is to set the value of the AX register of the processor to the constant value 0. The processor has the instruction (MOV AX), but now needs the constant value 0 to complete the instruction before executing it. In this instance, the processor will fetch the constant value 0 from the next location in memory (it is found immediately after the instruction, in the next memory location 0101)

Execute Cycle In the last phase, the processor executes the instruction. In the example above, this involves setting the contents of the internal register AX to the constant value 0 The final part of execute phase is to adjust the Instruction Counter to point to the next instruction to be executed, which is found at address 0102

Fetch/Decode/Execute Animated fetch decode execute
