To say I am prettier than her in Turkish, you
say Pınar ondan daha güzel. Literally: From her, Pınar is more pretty. İstanbul, İzmir'den daha büyük. Istanbul is bigger than Izmir. Türk yemeği, Çin yemeğinden daha lezzetli. Turkish food is more delicous than Chinese food. Koşmak yüzmekten çok daha kolay. Running is much easier than swimming. Benden daha güçlüsünüz. You are stronger than me. Equality Comparisons To say a thing is as something as another thing in Turkish, you use the word kadar. Unlike the above comparison, this construction doesn't require -den or any other suffixes. One trick though - when using kadar with a personal pronoun (ben, sen, etc.), the pronoun must be put in its possessive form (benim, senin, etc.). Esma, Ceylan kadar güzel. Esma is as pretty as Ceylan. Esma, senin kadar güzel. Sen, onun kadar güzel. Esma is as pretty as you. You are as pretty as her. Orası, burası kadar soğuk. There is as cold as here. Her sabah saat altıda kalkmak, maratonda koşmak kadar zor. Waking up everyday at 6am is as hard as running the marathon. Negative Comparisons There are two ways to express that a thing is not as something as another thing in Turkish. First, you can use the same -den construction as in the first section above, but use daha az in place of daha. Ortaköy, Taksim'den daha az kalabalık. Ortaköy is less busy than Taksim.
