Contrary to what many people think, excavations in towns of ancient cultures have revealed that not all buildings were colourless. Indeed, many were decorated in powerful, radiant colours. The main reason for the white theory is that very few of the original facade colours have been preserved. Not only are colours important for the aesthetics of a building, they also play a key role in signifying a building's function. (1) Colour emphasises or conceals particular features as well as influencing shapes and volumes. (2) Colour can establish links and connections with the surroundings whilst (3) providing guidance. These three basic considerations determine to this day how colour is used in architecture. Colour, along with shape and size, is what makes a building unique. Colour can be used to exciting effect to make specific buildings stand out from their surroundings. Lighthouses, for example Lange Jaap in Den Helder in the Netherlands, are a classic example. Powerful colours are increasingly being used in contemporary architecture too. With the building of the Hans-Otto-Theater in Potsdam (2006), architect Gottfried Böhm created an unmistakable symbol of modern architecture. The building s roof shells, in a powerful red, contrast impressively with the surrounding greenery.

Binalar, yakın civarda mevcut malzemelerden yapılıyordu. Bu yüzden tek tek binalar gibi büyükçe yerleşimler bile etrafa mükemmel bir uyum içerisindeydi. Göze çarpmayan renk seçimi ayrıca olası düşmanlara karşı kusursuz bir kamuflaj sağlıyordu. Bunun en müthiş örneği, adeta doğa ile birleşen bir mimariye sahip Yemen deki kerpiç kentleridir (resimde: Al-Hajarayn). Modern mimariden güzel bir örnek, Hamburg Speicherstadt bölgesinde Am Sandtorkai 56 adresinde bulunan ve yine Hamburglu bir mimarlık bürosu olan APB tarafından oluşturulan Projekt 7 dir. Görselliği ile öne çıkan gölgelendirme sistemlerin tasarımı ile projenin sahipleri, belli ki tarihi ambarların tuğla cephelerine atıfta bulunuyor. Uygun renkler seçildiğinden modern mimari, tarihi binaların hakim olduğu çevreye tam bir uyum sağlıyor. Yön bulmaya yarayan renkler Kamuya açık büyük bina komplekslerinde yön bulma kolaylığı önemli bir rol oynar. Bu tür yapılarda cephenin renk tasarımı bir nevi yönlendirme sistemi gibi insanlara yol gösterebilir. Örneğin farklı renklerde tasarlanan pencere doğramaları, departman, kat ve binaları birbirlerinden ayırmak için kullanılabilir. They were built from materials which were available in the immediate surroundings. As a result, individual buildings and even entire towns were in perfect harmony with the landscape. This inconspicuous colouring had an added bonus it provided the perfect camouflage against possible enemies. The most impressive examples are the Yemeni clay towns such as Al-Hajjaraina above. Their architecture fits perfectly into the landscape. An example from the field of modern architecture is Project 7, Am Sandtorkai 56 in Hamburg s Speicher stadt. The project was carried out by APB, a Hamburg-based architectural office. The architects design for the visually striking shading systems was clearly inspired by the brick facades of the historical warehouse buildings. By choosing suitable colours, they seamlessly incorporated a piece of modern architecture into an area dominated by historical buildings. Colour for guidance The idea of guidance plays an important role in large building complexes used by the public. In such cases, the colour of the facade can act as a guidance system to show people the way. For example, window frames in different colours can be used to distinguish entire departments, floors and even buildings. Alternatively, a single striking colour could be used to indicate an entrance area and make it visible from a distance.

"People s first visual impressions of an object or room are influenced not only by its shape but also by its colour. These two factors therefore play a key role in determining how their senses react from that point onwards. The fact that our work covers a range of disciplines allows us to look in depth at how colours, shapes, materials and surface textures interact in various areas of application. Our graphic and motion-design projects in particular allow us to use colour in a much more experimental and trendy fashion than would be possible in architecture or interior design. Although colour is fairly permanent, this certainly does not mean that architects should shy away from using it! When carrying out most construction projects, it is important to come up with solutions which will not look old-fashioned after only a short period of time (even if architecture is supposed to be an expression of contemporary culture). Temporary buildings or interior-design projects provide greater freedom to experiment. When the Cocoonclub in Frankfurt was designed for star-dj Sven Väth, three separate atmospheres with individual colour worlds were created for the club and its exclusive restaurants. We used colour much more subtly but equally effectively in the Leonardo Glass Cube. The interior of the all-white corporate archi tecture is bathed in delicate shades of blue by the daylight shining through the coloured glass facade. The need to protect nature and conserve limited resources determines our actions in all areas of life. It is the mega trend which will shape our lives for years to come. Even modern architecture can no longer escape the trend. Far-reaching building regulations and tax incentives for environmentally-friendly construction underline this. As the world s population continues to grow, so too does the level of interest in projects whose aim is to allow people to live in harmony with nature (Venice Biennale Architecture). The current trend colours, which are equally influential in the fashion world, can be regarded as the colours of the ecology mega trend. Working together with the French stylist R.C.M., Monika Fecht, Head of Corporate Design Management at the film specialist RENOLIT in Worms, Germany, has put together the Colour Road colour trends. It is easy to see how these colours could be interpreted as the aesthetic version of various aspects of the ecology mega trend.

It is no coincidence that this world of unique colours and shapes is inspiring more and more design projects requiring a modern form of purism.

In modern architecture, the colour green is no longer limited to areas of greenery. When combined with organic textures, the facades themselves become green oases, whilst new materials with green pigments transform buildings into objects of nature. Green is synonymous with nature, creation and a paradise where people still lived in harmony with the earth. There is ample sun and water and no shortages of anything. Sustainability, recycling and environmental awareness are very important. Architects are increasingly discovering green facades too. Modern, environmentally-friendly materials are used, as are building materials such as bamboo and other renewables which are provided by nature. Indoors, printed fabrics, high-tech materials and modern plastic panels are becoming increas ingly popular.
