As far as it is known they are not more than 20 in the world. Turkey has already proved its power and quality in naval and marine industry, essentially driven by naval projects such as MILGEM. Turkish Maritime & Naval Summit took place for the second time in Hamburg on September 9, 2014 during SMM exhibition in order to promote the capabilities of Turkish naval and maritime market and the growing potential of its size to all shipping and naval experts. The event highlighted the course of Turkish Shipbuilding Industry and presented the latest information about Turkish shipbuilding market in collaboration with and support of the Turkish Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM), Turkish Ship&Yacht Exporters Association, and some leading companies of Turkish maritime, naval and defense industries; Havelsan, Aselsan, Roketsan, Turk Loydu, STM, Ares Shipyard, SEFT Ship Design, Sanmar Shipyard, Soyaslan Denizcilik & Yacht Design, Data Hidrolik Makine Sanayi A.S. At the conference, first hand informations were delivered on Turkish maritime & naval industries, special purpose vessels & megayacht construction in Turkey, Turkish marine systems & equipment for naval and merchant shipbuilding market, and also MILGEM-Turkish National Corvette. In the last two decades parallel to the growth of the world trade, increased freight rates and the requirements of international rules and regulations for merchant ships boost the improvement and development of Turkish maritime and shipbuilding industry and it has evolved from an old traditional activity to an internationally recognized trade mark. Turkish naval industry has come to a level that a complex warship can be designed, constructed and integrated using indigenous technical and industrial resources, whilst maximizing local content. COMPETITIVE, FLEXIBLE, IN TIME However, because of the recent global economical crises the Turkish maritime and shipbuilding industry significantly affected as elsewhere in the world. As a consequence, the Turkish shipbuilding industry in spite of having the capability and capacity of designing and building of a wide range of commercial vessels, nowadays successfully deals with niche market vessels such as offshore supply boats, fishing boats, tugs, and mega yachts and ship conversion projects and particularly with naval ship constructions. Today, by combining the traditional shipbuilding skills enhanced by modern design applications with contemporary construction techniques, Turkish naval shipbuilding industry has become an internationally known trade mark. This phenomenon is called as MILGEM which is the acronym of national ship (Turkish Milli Gemi ). The short and mid-term goals of MILGEM have been reached and first two ships of the Ada class corvettes (TCG Heybeliada and TCG Büyükada) were built and delivered by Istanbul Naval Shipyard. The 3rd and 4th ships of the class are under construction in Istanbul Naval Shipyard with the contribution of local industry, and the whole project (12 ships in total) has been planned to be completed with the construction of the remaining eight corvettes by private shipyards in the near future. Additionally; negotiations are still ongoing and planned to be signed for the acquisition of a large multipurpose landing platform dock (LPD) for Turkish Navy till the end of this year 2014. As declared by SSM officials, 19 contracts have been signed so far with a total price of more than USD 7 billion, and another 13 naval vessel acquisition project with approximately USD 8 billion total price is planned to be on the front burner. In his speech Mr Baflaran Bayrak, Chairman, Turkish Ship and Yacht Exporters Association, underlined that Turkey is a rising power with fast growing economy with competitive price level and has the second largest and the youngest population in Europe. He made an overview of the industry: Turkey is one of the largest shipbuilder in Europe, having a large and dynamic shipbuilding industry (71 yards). Turkish-owned merchant fleet is growing and is the 15th largest in the world. Turkish ship and yacht building industry offers competitive prices, flexibility and customized design/production as well as competitive repair and maintenance. Precise delivery time and quality on outfitting of complex turn key vessels are also other major point. Tuzla and Yalova, as the local maritime clusters in the Marmara area, are active with advanced marine operations including many ship owners, design companies, ship yards, equipment suppliers, skillfull employees. The main ship and yacht types produced and exported include: petrol, chemical, oil and serving tankers; fishing and speed boats; container and cargo ships; bulk carriers; off-shore supply vessels; small to mega yachts; coast guards; multi and special purpose ships; military vessels; bunker barges; tugboats. WIDE RANGE OF NAVAL PROJECTS Turkish Navy planned to modernize and grow the fleet in the middle of 2006. The other aim of naval forces was to design and develop national naval ships. TL has involved in the following projects so far: auxiliary tankers, training boats (8 boats), LCT - Landing Craft Tank (8 sister ships), patrol boats (total 16 vessels, 14 of them delivered), aluminum patrol boats (10 sisters ships delivered), LST - Landing Ship Tank (2 vessels, block constructions have been started), MOSHIP - Submarine Deep Rescue Ship (launched), Offshore Rescue / Towing Ship (total 2 vessels, the first ship launched), Seismic Research Vessel, and only plan approval of MILGEM Corvettes (total 6 ships, first two completed). Among the future projects are LPD - Landing Platform Dock, logistic support vessels, Turkish Design TF 2000 Frigate (total 4), and Coast Guard search&rescue ship 600 Class (total 8). Turk Loydu s international references include patrol boats, fast interceptor boats (FIC), naval tug boat, LCM, aluminium sea bus, HSV (Hydrographic Search Vessel). Turk Loydu is a member of INSA (International Naval Safety Association), established in 2008 in order to develop and maintain the Naval Ship Code, and NSCA (Naval Ship Classification Association), founded by 7 NATO member Classification Societies to develop naval ship classification rules. COMPLEX PROJECT Speaking on Aselsan & Havelsan Joint Venture, Ms Arzu Canlı, Aselsan Naval Surface Systems Director, explained the success story of MILGEM Corvette Combat System Project Management. MILGEM Combat System Project was contracted by Aselsan Havelsan partnership and the project management has being undertaken by Aselsan as a pilot organization. It is an example of a complex project management. Mr. Kalafato lu highlighted the trends in construction and compared Sealium versus aluminum 5083 in alloy builds as well as epoxy versus ester resins in composite builds. Sealium offers 15% higher welded yield strength than standard aluminum 5083 alloy, increased margin of safety from same scantlings, significant weight savings, increased fatigue strength, and improved corrusion resistance. For composite builds, epoxy has advantages over vinylester and polyester in terms of adhesive properties, mechanical properties, micro-cracking, fatigue resistance, and osmosis. Founded in Istanbul in 1976, Sanmar delivered 14 tugs so far in 2014 and exported the most to mainly Norway and the other countries; UK, UAE, Peru and Italy. Since the establishment, the total of 65 tugboats delivered to 20 countries and also 24 tugboats were sold in Turkey. Sanmar s current order book contains 25 projects for Turkey, UAE and the Netherlands, to be delivered in 2014 and 2015. THIRD MEGAYACHT BUILDER IN THE WORLD Sharing some samples of megayacht projects built in Turkey, Mr Turhan Soyaslan, Naval Architect & Marine Engineer, Soyaslan Denizcilik Yacht Design, underlined that Turkey is the third megayacht builder country in the world. Currently 55 megayacht projects (over 24 m), for mostly international clients, are under construction in Turkey. The total value of the boats under construction is EUR 576 million (the average value is EUR 10.5 million), and the average length is 40 m whereas the average beam is 8.2 m. The projects comprise of 34 (62%) motor yachts, the total value of which is EUR 495.5 million (86%), and 21 (38%) sailing yachts, EUR 80.7 million (14%). Antalya and Istanbul hold the leading positions. Bodrum, Fethiye and Bartin are the other builder locations. The world s largest wooden sailing yacht with 141 m leght is also under construction. & 040 olmak üzere, ngiltere, Birleflik Arap Emirlikleri, Peru ve talya ya ihraç etti.
