1. TO BE (am,is,are) Cümleler yüklemlerine göre ikiye ayrılırlar; isim cümlesi ve fiil cümlesi. Örneğin Ben bir öğrenciyim(dir) cümlesinin yüklemi bir isim (öğrenci) olduğu için bu cümle bir isim cümlesidir. Ben yemek yerim cümlesinin yüklemi yemek fiilidir ve bir fiil cümlesidir. Fiil cümleleri ya da zamanlar ilerleyen konularda daha detaylı bir şekilde incelenecektir. Be (am-is-are) temel fiili isim cümleleri yapmak için kullanılır. Türkçedeki isimden fiil yapan dır ekini karşıladığı söylenebilir. Am, is, are kullanımları öznelere göre değişiklik gösterirler: Özne I ----------) You We -------) They Be am are He She---------) It is To be yardımcı fiilleri öznelerle birleştirilerek kısaltma yapılabilir: I am I m You are You re We are We re They are They re He is He s She is She s It is It s 1.1. Positive Statements To be filleriyle olumlu cümle kurmak için İngilizce deki sözcük dizilişine dikkat edilmesi gerekir; Özne + (ek) fiil + nesne + yer + zaman I am a student at Bayburt University He is my roommate Russia is a country They are my best friends Roses are flowers. Eğer cümlede çoğul bir özne var ise (they, we) yine yüklem de çoğul olmalıdır. İngilizcede çoğul eki ismin sonuna gelen s takısı ile yapılır. (Özne-yüklem uyumu) We are engineers David and I are brothers They are very good footballers David and John are neighbours 1.2 Negative Statements İngilizce de yardımcı ve ek fiillerin sonuna gelen not eki cümleyi olumsuz hale getirir. I m not at work now She is not a teacher We are not happy here Not eki am,is,are ile birleşerek kısalabilir: is not=isn t are not=aren t 1.3 Question Form İngilizce de soru cümlesi yapmak için yardımcı ve ek fiiller cümlenin başına; öznenin önüne getirilirler. Diğer bir deyişle am, is, are özneden hemen önce kullanılarak cümleyi soru cümlesi biçimine getirirler. Are you at home now? Is she a good dancer? Are Sue and Linda students? Aren t we friends? (Biz arkadaş değil miyiz?) Isn t he your father? (O senin baban değil mi?) Sorulara yanıt verirken kısa ve uzun olmak üzere iki şekilde cevap verilebilir. Are you hungry now? Özet 'To Be' temel fiili denine ilk olarak akla am-is-are ek filleri gelir. Bunlar Türkçe'deki - dır, -ım, --sin ekleri gibidir ve isim cümlelerinde kullanılır. Bir isim cümlesi kurmak istediğimizde am-is-are kullanmayı unutursak cümle hiç bir anlam ifade etmeyecektir. * He is a good friend.
