The project, called LiquefAction, aims to better understand the physical properties of cargo liquefaction in order to prevent bulk carrier casualties. It is being carried out by a consortium of Europe s top research institutions, including Germany s Hamburg Ship Model Basin (HSVA) and Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), as well as France s Ecole Central de Nantes (ECN) and the Institute of Science and Technology for Transport, Development and Networks (IFSTTAR), with support from German shipowner Oldendorff Carriers. The project is being sponsored by Germany s Federal Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy (BWMi) and France s Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy (MEDDE). Cargoes that may liquefy, which include nickel ore and a variety of other cargoes including other ore fines, are widely recognized as one of the leading causes of bulk carrier casualties. Over the past decade such cargoes have been linked to loss of more than a dozen bulk carriers and the deaths of more than 70 sailors. While awareness of the risks of such cargoes has grown over the past several years, little is still known about the factors that cause cargo liquefaction - especially what effect dynamic motions from waves and ship propulsion have on such cargoes. Understanding such factors is key to preventing future casualties, and is the driving force behind the new project. ClassNK is the world s leading classification society in the dry bulk sector, providing survey and classification services to more than one-third of the world s bulk carrier fleet. The society has been widely recognized for its work related to the safe transport of nickel ore, which BIMCO and other industry groups have named the world s most dangerous cargo. ClassNK s Guidelines for the Safe Carriage of Nickel Ore, which include both best practices for carrying nickel ore as well as standards for the construction of specialized ships designed to carry such cargoes, have been widely praised throughout the maritime industry. First published in 2011, with a revised edition in 2012, the Guidelines earned ClassNK the Safety Award at the Lloyd s List Global Awards 2012 and the Safety at Sea Award at the Seatrade Awards in 2013, among others. ClassNK Chairman and President Noboru Ueda said: Our goal is to support the safe growth and development of the maritime industry, not only in Japan or Asia, but in Europe and all around the world. The week of March 2-6, 2015 has been chosen as the date for the inaugural European Shipping Week (ESW) when shipping industry leaders from Europe and around the world will descend on Brussels to meet and network with top legislators from the European Commission, European Parliament and the Council of Ministers. The week-long series of high level events will bring together the major players in the shipping industry with the primary aim of promoting the strengths and significance of European and global shipping to these important regulatory bodies in Brussels. As reported, the European Commission, through DG MOVE (Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport), has endorsed European Shipping Week and formal patronage is already being sought from it as well as from the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers. Welcoming the announcement of the European Shipping Week dates, Patrick Verhoeven, Secretary General of the European Community Shipowners Associations (ECSA), said: The first week of March is ideal since EU institutions will by then be fully operational in their new composition. The whole idea behind this important event is to give European shipping the opportunity it needs to impress upon what is a new European Parliament and a new College of Commissioners. The Malta flagged 9,400 TEU container vessel CMA CGM ELBE, built by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. (DSIC) in China, has joined the CMA CGM fleet to be operated on one of the emblematic lines of the Group, the Bosphorus Express, (BEX). The vessel will offer direct service between Asia, Turkey and the Black Sea. Accordingly, it will call Dalian, Tianjin, Kwangyang, Busan, Shanghai, Ningbo, Chiwan, Yantian, Tanjung Pelepas, Izmit, Istanbul Ambarli, Constanza, Odessa, Ilyichevsk, Port Said, Port Kelang, Singapore, and once again Dalian. 300m in length and 48m in width, the vessel was designed to offer maximal loading capacity while meeting the technical constraints necessitated by the Istanbul Strait (Bosphorus). With a capacity of 1458 reefer plugs 40 feet, which is the largest so far on such a ship, it embodies the Group s ambition to be a leader in this growing market. The CMA CGM ELBE is the second of a series of 28 container ships from 9,400 TEUs to 10,900 TEUs vessels which will be delivered from now to the third quarter of 2016. The product will be available to customers from December 2014 in major ports. SMP now offers a complete suite of lubricants for all types of engines. Shell Alexia S3 is the latest in Alexia line of twostroke engine oils, and is formulated for use with low sulphur and distillate fuels up to 0.5% sulphur. The company also offers lubricants for mediumspeed four-stroke engines and gas powered engines like Shell s chartered barge Greenstream, the world s first 100-per cent LNG-powered barge which carries goods along Europe s River Rhine. The introduction of Shell Alexia S3 completes our portfolio, ensuring all our customers will have the right lubricant suitable for their shipping needs, said LNG Fuelled Shipping in APEC Region The classification society Korean Register (KR) and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Secretariat (APEC) will work alongside to promote the use of LNG fuelled ships in the APEC region. APEC has awarded a contract to further the understanding of the current state and future potential for LNG fuelled vessels to serve the region s maritime trade requirements. Work will also include a programme to share knowledge and best practice across the APEC region with the aim of promoting this new technology. The global maritime industry will see more stringent sulphur oxide (SO X ) restrictions in ECA areas, such as the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, North America and the United States Caribbean Sea in the coming years. From 1 January 2015, ships entering these areas will have to use fuels with 0.1% sulphur content, such as marine gas oil or liquefied natural gas (LNG). There have also been discussions among regulators of further expansion of ECAs into the entire Atlantic seaboard of Europe, the Mediterranean Sea, coastal Korea, the Sea of Japan, the Australian coast, the shipping lanes of Singapore, Malaysia & Indonesia, as well as coastal China. KR is to lead the APEC funded project supported by Japanese and Canadian representatives within APEC s Maritime Expert Group and Transport Working Group. The class society will undertake an extensive programme of research focusing on the current application of LNG technologies, associated safety aspects, seaborne trade statistics and best practice. Results will be shared with APEC member economies to help narrow the technology gap between countries. The project gets underway shortly and is expected to be completed by the end of 2015. Integrated Ulstein Design For Van Oord Rock Installation Vessel Van Oord Kaya Montaj Gemisi çin Bütünleflik Ulstein Tasar m Ulstein has been awarded the design and equipment contract for Van Oord s new subsea rock installation (SRI) vessel Bravenes. Working in close cooperation with Van Oord, this is the first fully integrated design where Ulstein is responsible for the development and integration of both the mission equipment and vessel design. The vessel will be constructed at Sinopacific Shipbuilding Group in China and be delivered in 2016. The dynamically-positioned vessel is a unique, innovative design featuring a DP-3 system, the distinct Ulstein X-Bow hull line and meets the requirements for Clean Design Notation, Green Passport and Ice Class 1A - PC7. Furthermore the vessel and its equipment are designed for year-round operability in harsh weather and high-sea states. Under the contract Ulstein will also supply the main Fall Pipe Deployment system and the majority of the ancillary systems of the SRI tower. Ulstein put a strong focus on simplicity, by mechanising the systems as much as possible, enabling higher levels of safety and control and as such minimising human interaction during the deployment and recovery of the fall pipe. The resulting system is robust and fully customised, able to efficiently switch between various rock installation modes and a wide range of rock sizes. Working with Van Oord on this project has been close, pleasant and pragmatic, says Arjan Boezeman, Director Sales and Concept Development at Ulstein Idea Equipment Solutions. We started developing a new, innovative fall pipe deployment system in summer 2013 and proved its feasibility by testing a real scale model early this year. It has been engineered to provide bestin-class installation cycle times in water depths up to 600 m and beyond.
