EDITORIAL The events of 9/11 spurred an intense interest in terrorism, which became immediately a core subject of political dialogue and academic debate. The then-coined term new terrorism came to dominate the security agenda on both sides of the Atlantic stimulating, at the same time, a tremendous amount of scholarly effort and policy initiatives so as to respond to the challenges posed by 21 st century terrorism. Yet, as Richard English lucidly points out: We face two kinds of terrorist problem. One is practical, the other analytical, and our difficulties in responding to the former have been significantly exacerbated by our failings in regard to the latter. 1 The fact that September 11, 2011 marked ten years since the terrorist attacks on America and the start of the global war on terrorism invites us to pause and reflect critically on what those events have meant in the context of the historical evolution of terrorism. This is exactly the purpose of this special issue and of each one of its contributions. Surely, no amount of analytical precision will rid us of the existence of terrorism, but if we want to respond effectively to the policy challenge that it poses we need first to respond effectively to its analytical challenge. 2 Therefore, the special issue at hand is a contribution to the ongoing attempt at addressing this analytical challenge by means of taking stock of the progress achieved thus far in the study of terrorism and of addressing the analytical (and policy) challenges that lie ahead. We believe that what emerges out of this issue provides further confirmation to Richard Jackson s estimation that we can be cautiously optimistic that the next decade of terrorism studies will see a great many exciting new developments and genuine advances in knowledge. 3 1 Richard English, Terrorism: How to Respond.
