MONUMENTS AND MUSEUMS TOPKAPI P A LA C E Overlooking the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn stands the labyrinthine residential palace of the Ottoman sultans from the 15th to the mid 19th century. Today this palace is one of the richest museums in the world. (Open every day except tuesdays.). Beside the monumental gate to the palace is the fountain of Sultan Ahmet III. In the first court you will find the ancient church of Saint Irene, one of the first Christian sanctuaries in Istanbul. On the left of the second court is the palace kitchen now housing an exquisite collection of Chinese porcelain. The fascinating Harem now beautifully restored is the secluded quarters for the wives and the concubines of the sultan. It is en tered through a gate by the right side of the court. In the third, following one another is the audience hall of the sultan, the library of Sultan Ahmet III, an exposition of the silken kaftans and tapestries of the sultans, the objects belonging to the sultan and his family and a room containing an exhibition of miniatures. In the fourth court you will find the Pavillion of the Holy Mantle containing sacred relics belonging to the Prophet Mohammed, as well as various other pavillions of interest. TH E A R C H E O LO G IC A L MUSEUM is situated on the boundary of the first court belonging to the Topkapi Palace. It holds one of the richest collections of classical antiquites. Next to this museum is the Museum of the Ancient Orient displaying antiquites belonging to the Hittite, Assyrian, Babylonian, and Summerian civilizations. In front of the Archeological Museum is the Çinili Köşk (museum of tiles ). A Y A S O FY A The construction of this ancient church was started by Justinian in the 6th century. It was one of the greatest architectural pieces of all times, decorated with gold leaf mosaics and polychrome marbles brought from all over the world. (Open every day except Mon.) SU LTA N AHM ET CAM İİ (Blue Mosq ue' 1609-1616) Facing St. Sophia, is the supremely elegant Mosque of Sultan Ahmet I, popularly known as the Blue Mosque Because of its magnificient interior decoration of blue İznik Tiles. It is the only mosque which has six minarets. On summer evenings there is a sound and light show presented in different languages. A T M EYDANI In front of the Blue Mosque is the ancient Hippodrome ; the scene of chariot races and the center of Byzantine civic life. Of the monuments once lining the spina (the Hippodrome's central axis) only three remain : The Obelisk of Theodosius, the Bronze Serpentine Column (from the Temple of Apollo) and the Obelisk of Bricks. M OZAİK M ÜZESİ To the eastern side of the Blue Mosque is the mosaic museum, erected on the site of the Byzantine Great Palace where a fine mosaic of the 5th or 6th century can be seen. (Open every day except Mon.) Y ER EB A TA N SA R A Y K V Ith century) T o the west of St. Sophia is the Byzantine cistern known as the Yerebatan Sarayi or the Underground Palace. It is constructed of 336 Corinthian columns. (Open every day except Mon.), B E Y A Z IT CAM İİ The Mosque of Beyazıt II Is one of the oldest mosques Galata Tower in Istanbul, (1505), and is surrounded by a complex of religiuos foundations. The mosque has a beautiful colonnaded courtyard and the rare marbles of the sultan's lodge are particularly striking. SÜ LEYM A N İY E CAM İİ Standing on the third of the city's seven hills is one of Istanbul's grandest mosques, the Mosque of Sultan Suleyman. Built between 1550 and 1557 by the great architect Sinan, the mosque has four minarets with ten "şerefe" (balconies) denoting that Suleyman was the tenth Ottoman Sultan. The sculptured white marble mihrab and mimber of the mosque are particularly. Fine. Adjoining the mosque are medresses, a school of medicine a refectory, asylum, caravenserai and a Turkish bath. TÜ R K V E İSLAM E S E R L E R İ MÜ ZESİ The museum of Turkish and Islamic arts is located in the "im aret" (hospice) of the Siileymaniye Mosque. It contains many beautiful Turkish and Persian miniatures, Selçuk tiles, korans and antique carpets. (Open every day except Mon.) RÜSTEM PAŞA CAMİİ The mosque of Rüstem Pasha standing on the banks of the Golden Horn was built by Sinan on the orders of Rüstem Pasa. the Grand Vizier of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. The interior is decorated with beautiful İznik tiles..y EN İ CAMİ (1597-1663) A familiar sight located at the Eminönü end of the Galata Bridge is the New Mosque. This fine 17th century mosque is preceded by a large courtyard with a particularly elegant fountain for ablution as well as the kiosk decorated with İznik tiles. G A LA T A K U LE Sİ (1348) This huge tower was built by the Genoese in 13-48. A t a hight of 120 m. one can appreciate the lovely panoramic view of the city, the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus. TH E AQUEDUCT OF V A LE N S Built by the Emperor Valens in 375 A.D. this aqueduct supplied the Byzantine and later the Ottoman Impreial palaces with water. B E L E D İY E M ÜZESİ (1946) The Municipal Museum Is located at the foot of the aqueduct in an old medresse. Here are selections from the way of life in Istanbul, along with selections from the theatre play Karagöz etc. Z E Y R E K CAMİİ The ancient church of Christ Pantocrator was constructed by the Empress Irene in the early 12th century, later having been converted into a mosque and now a museum. FA TİH CAMİİ Originally built between 1463 and 1470, this Mosque of Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror is well noted for its vast complex of annexes including medresses, imarets (hospices) hospital, baths, caravansarai and library. F E T H İY E CAM İİ The ancient church of the Most Blessed Virgin with its fine 14th century mosaics dates from the 12th century. (Open every day except Mon.) K A R İY E CAM İİ The church of St. Saviour in Chora from the 11th cen tury is, after St. Sophia,the most important Byzantine building in Istanbul. There is a beautiful display of Byzantine mosaics and frescoes of the 14th century. (Open every day except Mon.) EYÜP SU LTA N CAMİİ The Great Mosque of Eyüp is the holiest mosque Sultan A hm et Mosque (Blue Mosque) in Istanbul because It is the burial place of Eyüp, the standard bearer of the Prophet Mohammed, who died in an assault on the walls of Constantinople in 670. The mosque and türbe (mausoleum) were originally built in 1458 but the mosque itself was rebuilt in 1798. TH E LAND W A LLS Built in the 5th century by the Emperor Theodosius II, these walls stretch 7 km. from the Sea of Marmara to the Golden Horn and were once the mightiest fortifications in Christendom. SHOPPING IN ISTANBUL Shopping in Istanbul one of the delights of being in the city where one can enjoy wandering through the colorful bazaars as much as browsing in the modern shops choosing things from simple handicrafts to the most sophisticated jewellery. The favorite shopping centre is, of course, the "Kapalı Çarşı" or the Covered Bazaar in the old city. Here is a labyrinth of shops where each trade has its own street such as the goldsmith's street or the carpet seller's street". In the Bazaar there is something to suit every taste. There is a tremendous selection of jewellery from traditional pieces like Harem rings to modern settings. The carpet shops present a lovely arrangement of vivid colors and Intricate designs. If a carpet seems too expensive then one should not forget the kilim and cicim (a kind of rug) with their bold Anatolian designs and bright colors. The best sort of souvenirs are the genuine products of ancient Turkish crafts such as the hand painted ceramic plates, and the hand-beaten copper and brassware, trays, water ewers, cauldrons, etc.) which make beautiful decorative pieces; or the "heybe" (pouches) and the "yastık" (pillows) made out of wool in the traditional Anatolian maze of colors. Also something memorable to take back are the vases and plates in the beautiful green or gold onyx stone and in addition pipes carved out of the soft white meerchaum stone. There are the gaily embroidered blouses in şile bez, ideal for summer wear as the yemeni edged with "oya", (lace). If one is interested then it is worth looking at the great range of antiques in the Old Bedesten in the centre of the bazaar. There is an endless array of authentic antiques and souvenirs: Copperware, lamps, arms, jewellery, tiles, silver and glassware. Behind the Yeni Cami (New Mosque) is another charming bazaar of a d ifferent sort, the Mısır Çarşısı or the Spice Bazaar. Here the air is filled with the enticing aroma of open sacks of mint,thyme, cinnamon and allspice. Contrasting with the gay atmosphere of the bazaars are the sophisticated shops of İstiklal Caddesi and Cumhuriyet Caddesi both branching o ff Taksim Square. Here are the most fashionable shops where one can find the most exquisite jewellery and clothing as well as fine quality leather goods such as suede coats, jackets and well designed handbags and shoes.

BOSPHORUS A stay in Istanbul should not be completed w ithout the traditional and unforgettable excursion by boat along the Bosphorus, the winding straits separating Europe and Asia. Along its shores one w ill find a delightfully surprising m ixture o f the past and the present, as well as a range of grand splendor and quaint beauty: The modern hotels and ancient villas o f wood "ya h ", palaces of marble and fortresses, small vacationing spots and the charming fishing villages. The best way o f seeing the Bosphorus is to board one o f the passenger boats that regularly zigzag up the Bosphorus from the point of Karaköy. Stopping alternatively on the Asian and European side, this round trip excursion takes about 7 hrs. and the fare is very reasonable. Along the excursion you w ill encounter the magnificent Palace of Dolmabahçe, the residence o f the last Ottoman sultans. Further up the Bosphorus you w ill find the gardens and imperial pavilions of the Y ıld ız Palace. Elegantly spannin the Bosphorus and linking Europe and Asia fo r the first time is the Suspension Bridge. And along the Boshorus are contrasting elements of old and new such as the Ottoman wooden villas or "y a lı" of Arnavutköy and the luxurious apartments of Bebek. Facing each other across the Bosphorus are the fortresses o f Rumeli Hisarı and Anadolu Hisarı. During the summertime there are a series o f shows including folklore performances (celebrating the A rt and Culture Festival of Istanbul from the 20th June to the 15th o f July,). Facing each other across the straits are the elegant villas of Emirgan (on the European side) and Kanlıca (on the Asian side) famous fo r its yoghourt. Further along the European side is the beautiful bay of Tarabya, w ith its yachts at anchor and its many seafront tavernas, continuing on to the charming villages o f Büyükdere and Sarıyer. A t the same tim e it is possible to contact agencies which specialize in the organization of "mini-cruises" on the Bosphorus or trips by car along its shores. The shores o f the Bosphorus are filled w ith fine restaurants and night clubs. In the many restaurants along the Bosphorus one can enjoy the delights o f good food and entertainment. The traditional fare in such restaurants is "m eze" (hors d'oeuvres) followed by freshly grilled fish and accompanied by the excellent Turkish w hite wines or the traditinal "ra k ı" (aniset), which is drunk w ith water and ice. A colorful array o f meze is presented, choosing such tempting disher as "m idye dolması" (stuffed mussels), "taram a" (fish roe salad), "çerkez tavuğu" (Circassian chicken-cold chicken in walnut puree w ith garlic), and "yaprak dolması" (stuffed vine leaves). The fish is always fresh and we would recommend you the "lü fe r" (blue-fish), "kalkan" (turbot), "levrek" (bass) and "barbunya" (red mullet). The colorful night clubs, "gazino", provide splendid entertainment thoughout the whole dinner ranging from a selection of Turkish songs to the famous and unforgettable belly dance. Bosphorus and Rumeli Hisarı

VICINITY OF ISTANBUL TH E PR IN CES'ISLA N D S These nine islands at the mouth of the Gulf of İzmit are famous for their beautiful pine wooded scenery and sandy beaches probably taking their name from the fact that they were once the pleasure islands of the Byzantine princes. The largest and most enjoyable of the Islands is the Büyük Ada, an hour's journey by ferry departing from the Eminönü side of the Galata Bridge. On the island you'll have the memorable pleasure of taking a ride by phaeton among the pine trees after having relaxed on the many little beaches in the numerous coves surrounding the island. TH E B EA CH ES OF ISTANBU L Istanbul is surrounded by beaches on the European and Asian sides of the Sea of Marmara and on the Black Sea. On the European side of Marmara are the resorts of Ataköy, Yeşilköy and Florya, all with fine restaurants. On the Asian side of Marmara are the beaches of Moda, Fenerbahçe, Caddebostan and Suadiye. A t the end of the Bosphorus on the Black Sea are the large sandy beaches of Kilyos (on the European side) and Şile (on the Asian side). PANORAM IC TOUR O F ISTANBU L This tour takes approximately 4 hrs. by car and gives a good all around impression of the city. Leaving from Taksim Square you follow Cumhuriyet and Halaskargazi Avenues to the peripheral road taking you across the Bosphorus bridge. After crossing the bridge on the Asiatic side you can go up the Bosphorus to Kanlıca. Before returning past the bridge on the Asian side following the main road is Küçük Çamlıca (splendid panoramic view of the Bosphorus, Sea of Marmara and the Princes' Islands). Continuing along this ring road you arrive at Harem quay and take the ferry across the Bosphorus (excellent view of Topkapi Palace). After arriving at Sirkeci you take the coast road along the Sea of Marmara, passing around the sea walls, Yedikule and the land walls. The first gate in the land walls Is the Topkapi Gate, and passing through this gate you continue along Millet Caddesi and Atatürk Boulevard, under the Aqueduct of Valens, over the bridge to Galata Tower (Panoramic tour of the whole city). From here you can return to Taksim Square via İstiklal Caddesi. URBAN TRANSPORTATION The Bus The cheapest, but relatively a slow means of transport. On the European side, the main bus lines start from the Taksim Square, Eminönü Square (near the Galata Bridge) and the Hürriyet Square (near the Covered Bazaar). On the Asian side, there are departures from Üsküdar and from Kadıköy. There is also a regular bus service every half hour between the Yeşilköy Airport and the THY Airline terminal in Şişhane. Dolmuş (shared taxi) A practical and a cheaper means of transport when compared to the taxi. The "dolmuş" recognized by its yellow band is a shared taxi that serves for parts of the city and for the suburbs (especially for the localities situated on both sides of the Bosphorus). Each passenger pays according to the distance travelled and the fares are fixed by the municipality. The main "dolmuş" stations are at Taksim, Eminönü, Sirkeci (in front o f the train station), Üsküdar and Kadıköy. Taxi The taxi stations are numerous in the city. Taxies are easily recognizet by their chequered black and yellow bands. They are not equipped with taxi-meters, but each has an official tariff (for to get on, for the first three kilometers, and for every kilometer travelled over). In the Yeşilköy Airport, a taxi tariff is found on the taxi station that shows the fares for various parts of the city. Steamer A practical, enjoyable and a cheap means of transport. There are departures from Karaköy (Galata Bridge), to the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn, Üsküdar, Kadıköy, Haydarpaşa (railway station) and the Princes Islands. 1,2, 3, 4 ports are on the side of Eminönü 5, 6, 9 are on the foot of the bridge 7, 8 are on the side of Karaköy. 1 Kadıköy, Boğaziçi (Bosphorus) 2 Üsküdar, Boğaziçi (Bosphorus) 3 Boğaziçi (Bosphorus) 4 Boğaziçi (Bosphorus) 5 Adalar (The Princes Island) 6 Adalar (The Princes Islands) 7 Kadıköy 8 Haydarpaşa 9 Haliç (The Golden Horn) Ferry Boat To cross the Bosphorus: Kabataş- Üsküdar and Sirkeci- Harem. A frequent service from both sides and the crossing takes 15-20 minutes. Train The local trains that depart from Sirkeci Station, serve for the beaches on the European side of the Sea of Marmara and those that depart from Haydarpaşa train station serve for the beaches on the Asian side. Car In Istanbul, the traffic moves relatively freely and has become much more easy with the suburban roads and the Bosphorus Bridge. The car is the best vehicle to go to the beaches of Marmara and to go about on the two sides of the Bosphorus. To cross the Bosphorus is by toll: A return toll for cars 60 TL for buses 200 TL.
