WASTE RECEPTION C;;anakkale, with its lands in the Europe and Asia in the northwest of Turkey, unites the waters of the Aegean Sea with the Marmara Sea through its strait, which hosts thousands of ships every year. While the intense ship traffic of the Strait increases the importance of C;;anakkale, the importance of the port greatly increases also as regards the human and nature in the surroundings. The dangerous cargo carried ships passing through the C;;anakkale Strait in total amounts to 150 million tons each year. That is, each ship passing through the strait brings the risks they hold together with the commercial acquisitions. Although the loads carried by the ships and the wastes of their main and ancillary machinery poses a great risk for the environment when the number of the ships annually passing through the C;;anakkale Strait, this risk is eliminated with the processing and transforming of the wastes in the C;;anakkale Port and the Waste Receiving Facility. While main missions of the C;;anakkale Port is to process and transform the wastes originating from the ships or the remains of the loads they carry, to welcome the 15,000 foreign tourists visiting the city each year with cruises in addition to the loading and unloading services given to any type of ships. The port has an important place in the domestic and global economies, and produces an important cultural value in addition to its commercial contributions to the country. The operation of the C;;anakkale Port and the Waste Receiving Facility, wh ich is a member of the European Waste Treatment Facilities Associaion, "Euroshore ", is implemented according to the international standards. The Waste Receiving Facility in C;;anakkale Port is established on a port area of 40,000 square meters, customs warehouse of 3, 000 square meters, the Marine Fleet and the Land Fleet. The procedures in the C;;anakkale Port, which has the biggest waste receiving facility in Turkey and one of the biggest in Europe, start with the notification of waste delivery request. This request is evaluated by the relevant institutions and the waste receiving tanker approaches the ship that will deliver the waste. The authorities of the waste receiving tanker and the ship that will deliver the waste will be in continuous wireless communication in order to prevent any danger during the connections

Following the completion of the waste transfer, the captains of the ships fill the required official forms and the waste receiving ship leaves the delivering ship. The unloading procedures start immediately following the approach of the tanker loaded with the waste. The petrol derivative wastes that can be recycled are delivered to storage tanks, and those that cannot be recycled are delivered disposal facilities or to treatment facilities. Out of the waste accumulated in the tanks, water that is separated physically is brought to adequate discharge standards in the chemical treatment facility and then regained to the nature. The wastes that are partially separated from water are processed to make them suitable for recycling procedures. The initial phase of the process is carried out in the Separation unit. In this unit, water and solid materials remaining in the unprocessed waste are removed and lastly, the waste is dewatered completely by removing the emulsified water. In this stage, the dewatered wastes are taken to the Dewatered slop tank or to the dewatered bilge water sludge tanks. While the bilge and sludge wastes are sent to suitable incineration plants to be used in the temperature recycling, the dewatered slop and waste oil are taken to the Evaporation stage, which is the next step of the process. The wastes taken to the Evaporation stage are separated into 2 groups as the Waste Oil and the Waste Solvent, and each of these are taken to their own tanks. The separated Waste Oil and Solvents are now ready for recycling. Suring these stages, all the treatment processes are kept under control in the digital medium in real time thanks to the SCADA system. Following the separation processes, the wastes collected in the plant are transferred to the last ring of the energy transformation, that is, to the relevant industrial operations with a commissioning work. The wastes that controls in terms of cubic meters and tonnage have been performed are safely dispatched to the plants they will be used in by a licensed land fleet with GPS monitoring systems.
