Within this framework, the photograph exhibition titled Colors and Sounds from Baflak (Anther) Children consisting of photographs of works of art created by children between 2007 and 2009 will be held at the New Kadikoy Quay between January 9 and 14, 2010. Ship Finance Suffered Gemi Finans Kötüye Gidiyor T he annual 4th Turkish Shipping and Ship Finance Conference organized by Lloyd s Shipping Economist was held on 18-19 November at Point Hotel Barbaros, Istanbul. The most striking side of the two-day conference was the lack of participants. Unfortunately, it was the poorest conference in terms of attendance in its history. That is why it was carried from Ciragan Palace to Point Hotel. Obviously the financial crisis hit the conference badly. Neither the banks nor financial institutions were present in the conference as we used to see very often in the previous conferences. At the conference, attendees evaluated issues such as the effect of the global economic crisis on the Turkish shipping sector and the role of government in the sector. The opening speech was delivered by Metin Kalkavan, Board Chairman of the Chamber of Shipping, while the first panel featured Arkas Chairman Lucien Arkas, Geden Line Member of the Board of Directors Tu rul Tokgöz, Gemak Shipyard CEO Birol Üner and Global Oceanic Carriers CEO Michael Tartsinis under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Oral Erdo an. In this panel, the members shared their views about the effects of the global economic situation on the sector, the opportunities for financing and the prospects for the Turkish shipping industry. Although Metin Kalkavan draw rather a pessimistic approach upon the expectations in the near future, he also stated his opinion that 2010 would be Suay Umut, Lucien Arkas, Michael Tartsinis, Birol Üner, Tu rul Tokgöz better than 2009, that support provided by the government for the shipping industry would be important, and that the market needed support to improve. I received delivery of the last two vessels this year. The German government and banks provided assistance to both the shipyard and to us to finance these two vessels. We were able to receive delivery of our ships this year because the financing was resolved.
