1 Printer & Signage Expo Larger, More printer brands, More attendance Sign Istanbul 2012 Nicholas Hellmuth December

2 Introduction Sign Istanbul is the leading printer trade show in this part of the world. Actually you would have to travel another thousand kilometers or more to find an expo on printers comparable to Sign Istanbul. FLAAR Reports has attended several years in the past and we have now found that this expo is larger than in any recent year. But Sign Istanbul offers a lot more than printers, inks, media, substrates, laminators, CNC routers and flatbed cutters: this expo offers the city of Istanbul, one of the great centers of ancient civilization (under the original name, Constantinople). So you can bring your entire family, or bring your companion for a romantic get-away. PLUS, hotels are not overpriced like those in Duesseldorf for drupa. But try to select a hotel that has a shuttle. For sightseeing, before or after the expo, you might want to explore hotels in other parts of the city (the expo center is far away from the historical city center). 3 UV-cured printers at Sign Istanbul exhibitor list 2012 Agfa, efi VUTEk, efi Rastek, dilli, HP, Mimaki and Roland are exhibiting UV-cured printers. Much to my surprise I found more brands of UV-cured printers here than most other expos. Even Neolt had a UV-cured printer here. Even SigmaJet (GRAPO) was present. Plus Durst had at least it s entry level UV-cured printer on display. Anderson (DPC) from Taiwan was present as well as many brands from China, such as Docan, HiJet and more. But more important, why were other major Chinese brands completely absent, such as Teckwin? In the TRENDs level report from FLAAR you can read the complete list. But one thing we will mention in advance is that efi VUTEk clearly had more UV-cured printers than any other brand at the expo. Plus, efi VUTEk had a much wider range: entry-level, mid-range, and full-production models. VUTEk has two distributors for Turkey. Most important are all the brands which are NOT present: missing from China and missing from Korea. In the TRENDs level we explain why some brands are not present. 4 Aristo Aristomat GL 2432 Summa flatbed cutter. Here is a giant Zünd cutter. FLAAR has been at the Zünd factory in Switzerland and can attest to their quality. The recent year there was a printer expo in Hamburg there was a quick visit to the Aristo factory but I had so many products to take notes on that I was not able to get to the factory myself. There is a separate FLAAR Report with photographs of more of the brands and a list. Flatbed cutters in the Sign Istanbul exhibitor list 2012 Zünd, Kongsberg, Aristo, and now Summa had their flatbed cutters on display. But more than digital flatbed cutters; what you tend to find here are over a dozen brands of CNC routers. Many brands are made in Turkey, but these are rarely visible at any expo outside of Turkey. Most brands of 6 CNC routers are made in China. Until it is possible to visit the factory of a brand, it is not realistic for us to know which brands are reliable. 7

5 Eco-solvent printers at Sign Istanbul exhibitor list 2012 Roland now has a series 4 printer. Still using older generation Epson printheads. Mutoh claims to have a more recent printhead. Mimaki is cleverly moving to Ricoh printheads since Mimaki finally woke up to the reality that Epson wants all the signage market share for the new SureColor eco-solvent printers. So Mimaki is offering a more robust, more industrial (more long-lasting) printhead. billion. If true this is the best comparison; you get what you pay for. But every head has its positive features, including Epson heads of all recent generations. It is nice to see Seiko II exhibiting. Their lite-solvent inks give you maximum color pop. Plus their neon ink offers something different. It is noticeable that there are more Mimaki printers than any other brand at the expo. PIMMS is their largest distributor. 6 DX5 printheaded printers at Sign Istanbul exhibitor list 2012 In addition to Mimaki, Mutoh, Roland and Epson you can expect a few brands from China which feature DX5 printheads. Sometimes DX6 and DX7 printheads are also found, but they are rare. We will have a separate PDF on all the printers Made in China. 7 Textile printers at Sign Istanbul exhibitor list 2012 Several Mimaki textile printers are exhibited. A sophisticated 3.2m textile printer from ATPColor is in the booth of flexmedia. Two days before this expo started I was in a printing company in Europe which had two of these ATPColor printers simultaneously at work. In order to photograph the booths we needed to not have people in the aisle (as otherwise the photo would be blurred due to the 12 crowds). So we did photography very early in the morning. 13

8 Dye Sublimation Systems at Sign Istanbul We are making a list of every single brand and model of calendaring machine as well as other dye sublimation equipment (such as future digital). This 14 will be a separate PDF, in full color on textile printers at Sign Istanbul, such as those of EUROTECH. 15

9 Media and Substrates at Sign Istanbul exhibitor list 2012 Since nowadays most media comes from China, Korea, and some from Taiwan, it is crucial to meet and get to know these factories. The media you buy from major brand names is seldom made by that brand name. So it really helps to learn the reality of inkjet media today by visiting an expo. Often it is best to obtain from a local distributor; but still it is informative to learn how all the sources of media are doing business today. The most innovative media that I saw so far was in the booth of Agfa, a new media they name SYNAPS. I appreciate their managers taking the time to show me this material and explain its many applications. Of the scores of booths of Chinese media, the sample book that I enjoyed looking at was from Shanghai DER New Material Co., Ltd. In order to photograph the booths we needed to not have people 16 in the aisle (as otherwise the photo would be blurred due to the crowds). So we did photography very early in the morning. 17

10 Lost Opportunity Honeycomb sandwich board is increasingly popular in some countries, and almost totally absent in other countries. VISCOM Paris circa 2011 or 2010 had the best exhibits of this material. Other expos have almost nothing. Sign Istanbul had honeycomb sandwich board visible up front in at least two booths. It would be great to see honeycomb more featured in So here is a great opportunity for manufacturers and distributors of honeycomb sandwich board, as Turkey is a growing market

11 Aluminum composite material Whereas presence of honeycomb sandwich material was weak, the presence of aluminum composite material was strong. There is not any American or European expo where so much aluminum composite material and aluminum panels were so readily visble as you walked the aisles. It was ironic that most brands were local. I would estimate that some was made in China. The brand from Japan was nowhere visible whatsoever. So if they have a distributor, their brand name was well hidden

12 After-market Ink at Sign Istanbul 2012 Many brands of after-market ink are available from Sign Istanbul. The ones we know the best are Sam Ink (have been in their R&D lab and factory in Singapore twice) and Inkwin (I have been to their R&D labs and factory twice also). Some expos are weak in after-market ink (such as Reklama Moscow where I was a month ago), but Sign Istanbul offers a full choice of inks from Korea, China, Singapore, and also made in Turkey itself. So if you wish to interact with ink company personnel, of companies which are not at other expos, consider coming to Sign Istanbul. In our separate FLAAR Report on ink we show every booth. Here in the general introduction I show the companies where they have arranged a visit so I can inspect print-shops which are actually using their ink. For Sam Ink I have inspected printshops in Istanbul, near Los Angeles, Sao Paulo (Brazil) and in Singapore which are using their ink for Roland, another of their inks for HP latex printers, and for HP 5000, 5500, as well as mild solvent for HP 8000s, 9000s, and 10000s. During 2013 if other ink companies bring us to their factories, then we can write a FLAAR Report on their ink. Many companies had an ink logo on their booth 22 wall but it was not easy to find the actual ink. With Sam Ink it was clearly displayed. 23

13 Sign Graphic booth was in Hall 6. Official Trade Magazine at Sign Istanbul The official trade magazine of the expo is Dijital teknik. This company has an additional trade magazine, tekstil & teknik. The booth of Dijital teknik is at the far end of Hall 7. Sign Graphic magazine was at the end of Hall 6. They had their regular magazine, a newspaper of advertising for companies at the expo, and a monumental hardbound directory of all the printshops and printing companies and sign making companies in all of Turkey

14 Attendance at Sign Istanbul 2012 Printer and Signage Expo Sign Istanbul 2012 The first two days (Thursday and Friday) there were plenty of people attending. Saturday however, the expo was packed solid with people. The only other expo in the world where I have seen this many people is at the July expo in Brazil (it has an attendance significantly more than either SGIA or ISA; actually if the Brazil show has a truthful count their attendance is more than SGIA + ISA put together). The only honest count is unique visitors or how many individual people are registered and actually attend. FESPA seems to have an honest count. Other expos count as a visitor any time any person passes through the entry gate. So if you attend three days in a row you are counted as three people. This is typical. We have no way to know whether the summer Brazil count is unique visitors, or a typical trade show exaggeration. We will try to find out, but if the expo organizers don t say up front, it is logical to have some doubts. At Sign Istanbul I do not myself count visitors: instead I note how the flow of people is in the aisles and coming in the main entries. By noon the final day the expo was packed. By early afternoon the crowds were still coming in the main entrance. In summary: two good days and then two days of the aisles packed with people. I have not seen any expo other than Serigrafia, Sign, Future Textil (sic) in Brazil with as many people every day all four days. SGIA 2012 had healthy crowds first two days but third day attendance was noticeably weak. Still, SGIA had about 20,000 attendees. During conversations with people at Sign Istanbul I was told that one of the expos elsewhere in Europe was cancelled (a polite way to say it went out of business since it no longer attracted enough exhibitors or attendees). Six years ago that sign printer expo was substantial and I attended at least two or three years in a row. Most of us in the industry are also familiar with the several expos in USA which disappeared totally: DPI (was always small, but was a great expo) COMDEX (once one of the largest expos in North America) There are separate FLAAR Reports which discuss the rise and fall of printer trade shows. What I notice is that it is the expo organizers own style which causes them to collapse or go bankrupt. It is easy to blame the downfall of all the VISCOM expos on the failing EU economy. But the failure of most VISCOM venues is based much more on total failure to be realistic. Since an expo is first and foremost understandably a commercial endeavor, profit takes precedence over investing in long-term improvements. But since most expos have managers with experience in the expo industry, it is logical that they feel all their decisions are ideal. I enjoyed attending all VISCOM expos but did not provide consulting services because they felt they already had all the knowledge that they needed. We appreciate that Sign Istanbul organizer (ifo) provides a true unique visitor count: total visitor number for 2012 was 21,579, Professional sector. 26 Seybold (was once as large as SGIA or ISA are 27 today).

15 Other printer expos in Turkey Printer and Signage Expo Sign Istanbul 2012 In 2006 and a few years of that epoch I also attended a printer trade show in Turkey named Outdoor & Indoor. It was held in late August and/or early September in the expo center that is near the airport. The organizers were pleasant and hospitable but I never heard from them in many years. But Sign Istanbul, later in the year, apparently was more successful. I have returned to Sign Istanbul in 2010 (and earlier years). The same phenomenon is happening in most countries: one expo is popular and competing expos last only a few years. We at FLAAR Reports support printer trade shows, photo equipment expos, and 3D scanning and technology events. But in today s economy it is better to have one popular event. The USA can support two international events: one in spring and one in autumn (plus local regional expos). But in Brazil it will be tough for any expo to match the success of Serigrafia Sign Futur Textile (48,000 claimed attendees; even if a how-many-people-entered-each-timecount, it is still more than ISA and SGIA put together!). 28 But businesses do engage in competition, so there will be new expos for 2013 in 29 several areas of the world.

16 The organizer of Sign Istanbul is ifo Their web sites are: Because the entry area is always so crowded, the photo we use to show ifo is their info booth in the back corner of Hall 7. There were two other much much larger ifo booths elsewhere. There is always a separate FLAAR Report on the positive features and the occasional weak aspects of an expo. Even drupa has many many features which are a nuiscence and need to be improved (such as the extravagant excess period of 14 days, now shortened to 11 days (based on irritated wide-format and other digital exhibitors who don t need two weeks). It would have been more realistic to cut down to 8 or 9 days. But at least 11 is less senseless than 14 days (we do try to find something positive even about drupa). So there will be an upcoming discussion (separately) of ifo, organizer of Sign Istanbul. In the meantime we can say that the organizers are pleasant and hospitalble. I also met a representative of the company in the UK which is an owner

17 FLAAR Services for exhibitors FLAAR Services for exhibitors Starting in 2011 we began to take notes on good booth design and bad booth design. Starting in 2010 we began to publish notes on how to make your booth so awful that potential clients will not bother to visit. We also have a FLAAR Report on how to train your booth personnel to act in a manner to cause attendees walking the aisle not to want to come and visit your booth. These FLAAR Reports received close to a standing ovation of praise since no other consultant dared to mention these aspects of how to improve your booth. Obviously our list of bad booths was to show how to help your booth become better (we do not list the names of the awful booths, we simply indicate what kinds of mistakes they make to become uninviting for attendees). For Sign Istanbul we will prepare a short FLAAR Report on good booth design. For us to analyze all the booths at the expo would require a third staff person to attend the expo, but at least we want to show a few of the booths which attracted attention. It was a challenge to find a place to photograph both aisles simultaneously, but I brought my 17mm prime lens and by waiting about 20 minutes it was possible to get views without crowds of people obscuring the two logo walls. 18 How to get to Istanbul? Most international airlines have flights to Istanbul. The airport is at one edge of the city. US, EU and citizens of most countries simply pay $20 in cash upon arrival and they get a visa onthe-spot. The airport is well organized; getting the Visa takes 5 minutes (and you do not even have to fill out any silly paperwork)

19 What to do in Istanbul? The two best-known places in Istanbul would be the Hagia Sophia and the Topkapi Museum. But the city is such a treasure of history that you could spend many days here. Plus, we have found it a hospitable city (not to mention one of the largest cities in the world outside China). The major distributors of Turkey are also visitors to the other international expos around the world. So I see colleagues from Turkey almost every two months somewhere in the world. Plus Turkey is a great travel destination. We look forward to seeing more of Istanbul at Sign Istanbul View of the water from the TUYAP expo area.
