7 WITH SORROW AND HOPE Türkiye, 2011 yılını turizmde güzel haberler, çıtayı yükselten başarılarla geçirdi. Gerek turist sayısı, gerekse turizm geliri açısından hedefler aşıldı. Bu tablonun çok önemli bir parçası olan müzelerde de 2011 kelimenin tam anlamıyla hamle yılı oldu. TÜRSAB-MTM ortaklığının Kültür ve Turizm Bakanlığı ile işbirliği daha ilk yılda meyvelerini verdi. Müzeler daha çağdaş bir çehreye kavuşturuldu, ziyaretçi sayısı da hızla arttı. Elinizdeki dergi de, bir bakıma bunun kanıtı. Peşpeşe Türkiye ye dönüşü sağlanan eserlerin de katkısıyla müzeciliğin, özellikle arkeoloji müzelerinin altın dönemi yaşanıyor. Müze Dergi de bunun getirdiği bir ihtiyaçla ve böyle bir döneme tanıklık etmek hedefiyle sizlere ulaşıyor bizler için bu güzel tabloda ve daha şimdiden başladığımız 2012 yılı hazırlıklarıyla geçti. Ancak ne yazık ki, ülkemizin bütünü için bunu söylemek çok zor. Depremlerin ve şehitlerin haberleriyle, kendimizi adeta acının enkazı altında hissettik. Bütün dileğimiz, acıların 2011 de kalması. Umudumuz da, yaralarımızı saracak gücümüz de var. Yeni bir yıla girerken, sizlere ve elbette bütün Türkiye ye ve dünyaya bu duygularla iyi haberler diliyorum. ACI VE UMUTLA Turkey had quite a successful touristic season behind, in terms of tourists inflow as well as income volume, outreaching estimated target figures. In this respect, museums, which are a fundamental component of tourism industry experienced a real year of boom in The TÜRSAB-MTM cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism yielded already in the first year reasonably positive results. Museums underwent a modernizing facelift and reached a rapid increase in the number of visitors. The publication you are holding in your hands is evidence to that reality. Particularly the archaeological museums are experiencing their golden era, among other, thanks to the repatriation to Turkey of various antique treasures which were previously uprooted from their homeland. Müze Dergi is published out of a need resulting from these gratifying developments and reaches its reader as testimony to this success story. We can proudly announce that 2011 has been a very good year for us, during which we surely did not fail to fulfill the necessary preparations for an equally fruitful year However, it is difficult to argue the same for our country in general. The recent tragic earthquakes and martyrdoms caused great pain to our people. We only hope that the suffering lies behind us. We do possess the strength and trust to heal our wounds. 10 The most renowned oracle-centre of the Antique world TELL ME DIDYMA Didyma was the most significant cult centre on the territory of the great classical city Miletos, pre-eminent science and art cradle of the Ancient world. Didyma, the largest and the most prosperous Ionian temple erected in Anatolia, famous for its relics, its sacred spring, its sacred laurel grove remained standing for 3 thousand years against all odds, wars, earthquakes and destructions. anadolu topraklarında kurulan en büyük ve en zengin ion tapınağı. kutsal emanetleri, kutsal kuyusu ve kutsal defne korusuyla ünlü. bilim ve sanatın merkezi milet in kutsal alanı. savaşlara, depremlere, yıkımlara inat dıdyma yaklaşık 3 bin yıldır ayakta... idim, eski adıyla Didyma... Aydın ilinin Yenihisar köyü yakınlarında, yeşilin maviye karıştığı, Menderes nehrinin denizle buluştuğu yerde kuruldu. Apollon Tapınağı ile tanındı. Didyma nın hazinesi sayılan Apollon Tapınağı, o zamanki adıyla Didymaion M.Ö. 560 ta inşa edildi ve antik dünyanın en önemli kehanet merkezlerinden biri haline geldi. Efsaneye göre, tanrı Apollon bir gün Didim yöresinde çobanlık yapan Brankhos a rastladı. Brankhos tan çok hoşlandı ve ona kehanetin sırlarını öğretti. Çoban Brankhos, defne ormanı ve su kaynağının bulunduğu, bugünkü tapınağın yerinde, Apollon adına ilk tapınağı yaptı. Zaman içinde Brankhos soyundan gelenler Brankhidler olarak anıldılar. Tapınak, uzun süre, orada yaşayan ve Brankhidler adı verilen aile tarafından yönetildi. Ta ki M.Ö. 494 te Persler Miletos a saldırıncaya kadar. Pers saldırısı sırasında, Miletos şehri ile Apollon Tapınağı da yerle bir oldu. Tapınakta bulunan, Apollon un bronz heykeli Pers başkenti Ekbatan a götürüldü. Ünlü tarihçi Herodot olayı şöyle anlatır: Brankhidler tanrılarına sadakatsizlikle suçludurlar; tanrıya sunulmuş hazineleri hiç duraksamadan Pers kralına teslim etmiş ve ihanetlerini izleyecek olaylardan kurtulmak için de onun peşinden Pers ülkesine kaçmışlardır. Yüz elli yıl sonra İskender buraya dek geldi. Ordusundaki Miletoslular a ne yapması gerektiğini sorduktan sonra, yerleşmeyi yerle bir etti. Böylece babalarının işlediği suçun cezasını oğullar ödemişlerdir. 8 Didim, Didyma with its ancient name was founded near the Yenihisar village of the Aydın province, where green mixes with the blue, where the Maeander river meets the Aegean sea. Didyma, known for its Apollo Temple, its treasure, the Didymaion erected in 560 B.C. grew into the main oracular shrine of the Antique world. According to the myth, Apollo met one day in the area the shepherd Branchos whom he loved and revealed the secrets of divination. Branchos established the first Apollo temple inside the laurel forest, near the water source, on the placement of the current sanctuary. In time, the line of priests who claimed descent from Branchos were called the Branchidae. Until its destruction by the Persians in 494 B.C., Didyma was the major Anatolian sanctuary dedicated to Apollo, administered by the family of the Branchidae. The Branchidae were expelled by Darius Persians, who burned the temple and carried away to their capital Ecbatana the archaic bronze statue of Apollo. According to ancient Greek historian Herodotos, the Branchidae were guilty of sacrilege and treason towards their gods; they supposedly delivered the treasures offered to gods to the Persian king and followed him into Persian lands to escape the consequences of their treason. 150 years later, Alexander the Great supposedly destroyed the villages of the Branchidae descendants upon the exhortation of his Milesian soldiers, thus punishing the sons for the sins of their ancestors. After his capture of Miletos in 334 B.C. Alexander the Great reconsecrated the Apollo oracle but placed its administration in the hands of the city of Miletos, where the priest in charge of the oracle was annually

Ve hemen yıkılan tapınağın yerine, hatta onun temelleri üzerine, İon dünyasının en büyük tapınaklarından birinin yapımına başlandı. Daha sonra, Apollon Tapınağı ndan çalınan bronz Apollon heykeli Suriye Kralı I. Seleukos tarafından bulundu ve Didyma ya geri verildi. Miletoslular, M.Ö. 300 dolaylarında başladıkları tapınağı tamamlayabilmek için iki yüz yıl boyunca çalıştılar ama ölçüleri çok büyük tutulan tapınağı bir türlü bitiremediler. Tapınağa götüren Kutsal Yol Şiirin, ışığın, müziğin, hekimliğin tanrısı Apollon aynı zamanda kehanetin de tanrısıydı. İsterse, kâhinlik yeteneğini diğer insanlara verebilirdi. Kehanet antik çağın en gözde yönetim aygıtı ve inancın temel taşlarından biriydi. Rasyonel düşüncenin ilk filizlerini verdiği, bilimin ilk merkezlerinden biri sayılan Miletos ta bile... elected. Following Alexander s victory over the Persians, the Apollo oracle spoke again and supposedly announced that Alexander was son of Zeus. Alexander ordered the reconstruction of the temple, but it was left to Seleucus I Nicator, the founder of the Syrian Seleucid Empire, who conquered this part of Alexander s empire, to make a beginning with the project. About 300 B.C. Seleucus I Nicator brought the bronze cult image, the Apollo statue back, and the Milesians began to build a new temple, which, if it had ever been completed, would have been the largest in the Ionian world. Even though the construction continued for two hundred years, the shrine was never completed. The Sacred Road leading to the Temple Apollo god of poetry, light, music and medical science, was also the god of oracular divination. He possessed the ability to transfer his oracular powers to humans. Divination was the favourite method of ruling and the basis of belief systems in the ancient world, which is true even for Miletos considered one of the first centres where rational and scientific thinking began to develop... Didyma Antique City is also admired for its remarkable stone reliefs depicting plants and animals (aside). 150 yıllık bir öykü! Tapınak hakkında ilk bilgileri Anadolu yu gezen Fransız seyyah Charles Texier ve İngiliz arkeolog Newton topladılar. İlk kazılar ise 1858 yılında İngiliz, daha sonra da Fransız heyetleri tarafından yapıldı, ama bir sonuç alınamadı. Sistemli kazı çalışmalarına ancak 1904 te Berlin Müzesi adına, devrin ünlü arkeoloğu Prof. Theodor Wiegand başkanlığında başlandı ve 1913 yılına kadar devam etti. Kazılarda elde edilen bilgiler, 1941 yılında H. Knackfuss tarafından Didyma adlı bir kitapta yayınlandı den sonra kazıları Alman Arkeoloji Enstitüsü adına Klaus Tuchelt sürdürdü yılından itibaren Kutsal Yol un çevresinde yapılan kazılarda imparatorluk dönemine ait bir hamam ve ona ait galeriler yanında devasa büyüklükte bir su sarnıcı bulundu. Halen Almanya Halle Üniversitesi nden Prof. Dr. Helga Bumke başkanlığında devam eden kazılar, yazıtlardan elde edilen bilgileri doğrulayan sonuçlar verdi. Özellikle Roma İmparatorluğu döneminde rağbet gören ve dört yılda bir yapılan Didyma şenliklerinde, çeşitli spor karşılaşmaları yanında, hitabet, müzik ve tiyatro konularında da yarışmalar düzenleniyordu. Şenliğin bir kısmı Miletos, bir kısmı da Didyma da gerçekleşiyordu. Özellikle tragedya dalındaki yarışmaların Miletos taki görkemli tiyatro yerine, neden bir tiyatrosu olmayan Didyma kutsal alanında yapıldığı merak konusuydu. Bu sorunun cevabını 2010 yılı kazı çalışmalarında 23x20 metre büyüklüğünde bir duvar yapısına ulaştıklarını söyleyen Prof. Dr. Bumke veriyor. Dairesel şekilde devam eden ve teras duvarı olarak adlandırdıkları bu yapının bir tiyatro olabileceğini belirtiyor. A 150 years old story! The initial data on Didyma sanctuary was collected by French traveller Charles Texier and British archaeologist Newton. First excavations were carried out in 1858 by British and later by French archaeological teams without yielding satisfactory results. Systematic excavations were performed in 1904 under the leadership of Prof. Theodor Wiegand through the auspices of the Royal Berlin Museums (Königliche Museen zu Berlin) and carried on until The findings of the exploration were published in 1941 by Hubert Knackfuss in a book entitled Didyma. From 1962 on, excavation work was carried out by Klaus Tuchelt under the auspices of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI-Deutsches Archäologisches Institut). The research conducted after 2000 in the periphery of the Sacred Road led to the discovery of a Roman bath and its adjoining galleries along with a giant size water cistern. Excavations currently continued under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Helga Bumke from Germany s Halle University led to findings confirming data obtained from earlier discovered tablets. This is particularly true concerning information on the popular Didyma festivities organized every four years during the Roman period where various sportive competitions along with competitions in the field of oratory art, musical and theatrical performances took place. The festival was held partly in Miletos, partly in Didyma. Why the tragedy performances were staged in Didyma rather than at the magnificent Miletos amphitheatre remained an intriguing question mark for many years. The answer to that question is probably provided by Prof. Dr. Bumke who declares that, during their 2010 excavations, they found a 23x20 metres large terrace wall extending in circular form which might well belong to a theatre structure that previously existed and was later destroyed. 10

15 Kutsal alana çoğunlukla deniz yoluyla gelen ziyaretçiler, Panormos limanından karaya çıkar, Miletos u Didyma ya bağlayan, Kutsal Yol dan yürüyerek tapınağa ulaşırlardı. Ziyaretçiler arasında, geleceğini öğrenmek isteyen sıradan insanların yanı sıra, bir savaşın karar arifesindeki krallar da olurdu. Bayram alayları bu kutsal yoldan harekete geçer, tapınağın çevresinde meşale koşuları, çeşitli yarışlar yapılır, şenlikler düzenlenirdi. 18 kilometrelik Kutsal Yol un Didyma ya yakın son iki kilometresinde ziyaretçileri, geniş koltuklarda oturan kadın ve erkek Brankhidler in heykelleri karşılardı. M.Ö. 6. yüzyılda yapılan bu heykellerden pek çoğu 1858 yılında İngiliz arkeolog Newton tarafından British Museum a gönderilinceye kadar orijinal yerlerinde, ait oldukları topraklarda, ziyaretçilerini karşılamaya devam ettiler. Kutsal kaynağın suyu Tapınağın girişindeki merdivenlerin yukarısında yükselen devasa çift sıra sütunların sonunda tapınağın üç girişi vardı. Yanlarda iki küçük giriş ve her zaman açık olan orta giriş... Ortadaki büyük kapıyı kullanmak yasaklanmıştı. Yalnızca rahipler bu bölüme girebiliyordu. Burada Apollon un kadın kâhinleri, kendilerinden geçmiş bir halde yalnızca rahiplerin tercüme edebildiği anlaşılmaz sözlerle sorulan soruların yanıtlarını verirlerdi. Tapınağın diğer bölümlerini görmek için küçük yan girişler kullanılırdı. Küçük girişlerden zemin kata inilir, uzun koridorun sonunda tapınağın ana bölümüne ulaşılırdı. Etrafı duvarlarla çevrili ve çatısız bu bölümde büyük bir defne korusu, kutsal bir su kaynağı ve Apollon un heykelinin bulunduğu küçük bir tapınak daha vardı. Biri yukarıya çıkmak, diğeri de aşağıya inmek üzere kullanılan merdivenler de bu bölümde yer alıyordu. Efsaneye göre Persler tarafından yakıldığı ve yağmalandığı için kurumuş olan kutsal kaynağın suyu, tapınak yeniden inşa edildikten sonra akmaya başlamıştı. Apollon un kadın kâhinleri Kâhin kadınlar bu kutsal alanda yaşar ve ellerinde tanrı tarafından verildiğine inanılan bir asa taşırlardı. Ayaklarını, giysilerinin ucunu tapınağın kutsal suyunda ıslatır ya da suyun buharını soluyarak kendilerini tanrının vereceği esinlere açık tutarlardı. Ayrıca kehanette bulunmadan önce yıkanmaları ve üç gün oruç by the sea disembarked. They reached Didyma by walking through the Sacred Road connecting Miletos to Didyma. The oracle was consulted by ordinary people as well as kings on the eve a decision to wage war. Festive processions started from the Sacred Road, torch runs, various competitions and festivals were organized around the temple. Statues of male and female Branchidae seated on large-size armchairs met the visitors at the last two kilometres portion of the 18 kilometres long Sacred Road. These statues erected in the 6 th century B.C. remained in place at their homeland to welcome their visitors until British Archaeologist Newton transferred them in 1858 to the British Museum in London. The water of the Sacred Spring After climbing the stairs to the temple, a walkway bordered by a double range of giant columns led to three adjacent entrances, the main entrance in the middle and two smaller entrances on each side of the main entrance... It was not allowed for ordinary people to use the main entrance, open only to priests. At this point, sibyls in trance provided responses to the inquiries of the pilgrims by pronouncing unintelligible phrases discernible only to priests who translated them to the public. The two lateral entrances were used to visit the remaining parts of the sanctuary. After crossing through the small entrances, one had to climb down the stairs to a long corridor leading to the main court of the temple. The entry route lay down either of two long constricted sloping passageways built within the thickness of the walls which gave access to the inner court without a roof, still open to the sky but isolated from the world by the high walls of the cella: there was the ancient Sacred Spring, the naiskos-which was a small temple itself, containing in its own small cella the bronze cult image of Apollo-and a grove of laurels, sacred to Apollo. According to Callisthenes, a court historian of Alexander, the spring dried up following the plundering by the Persian invaders, began once more to flow after Alexander passed through and the temple was rebuilt. Apollo s Sibyls Female prophets or priestesses called sibyls in the ancient world were carrying a sceptre believed to have been bestowed to them by gods. They wet the bottom of their garments in the sacred water of the spring or inhaled the mist emanating from the spring with a view to keeping themselves ready to receive the prophecies believed to be inspired to them by gods. They also had to observe a fast for three days and take 13

Tarihçiler, bunu ilk Hıristiyanlar ın pagan kültürünü yok etme çabasına bağlıyor. Bu nedenle yazıtların kırılıp yok edilmeye çalışıldığı sanılıyor. Bir başka hayal kırıklığı da, bulunanlar üzerindeki metinlerden; kehanetlerdeki öğüt ve önerilerin pek parlak olmamasından kaynaklanıyor! M.Ö. 560 da inşa edilen Apollon Tapınağı Antik Çağ ın en büyük kehanet merkeziydi. The Apollo Temple erected in 560 B.C. was the principal oracle-centre of the Antique Age. purifying ablutions before prophesying. They went into trance by chewing laurel leaves and transmitted to humans prophecies provided to them by gods. Nevertheless, the transmission did not occur directly between priestesses and pilgrims, since the inquirers were not allowed to get into direct contact with the sibyls, but received the responses to their inquiries through further sacred mediums as intermediaries. Put into rhymed verses, the prophecy was submitted in writing to the inquiring pilgrims by Apollo s spokesman. Apollo s announcer was the annually elected highest ranking official of Miletos. A second spokesperson assisted him in fulfilling his duties. Generally, this person was selected from among people possessing the talent to translate the prophecies into poetic language. Sometimes, Emperors acted as Apollo s announcers, leading to think that the tradition of choosing a literarily gifted assistant was established by those emperors without poetic talent. As to the question why emperors would take on such a task, the answer is probably the aim to immortalize their names. Evidence to this assumption are the stone blocs of the temple on which the names of 200 Apollo spokespersons are inscribed as a lasting sacred legacy to generations of following centuries. Unfortunately, epigraphs containing the texts of prophecies proper are of disappointing rarity. A very limited number of such tablets were found during excavations and most of them were shattered into pieces. Historians explain the disappearance of such inscriptions with the effort of Early Christians to destroy reminiscences of pagan faith and culture, who probably crushed the tablets. A further disappointment is the fact that the admonitions and intimations contained in the rarely found prophecies are of a gloomy nature! 15

General Belisarios un başkanlığında süren onarım çalışmaları sırasında Sümela biraz daha büyütülür tarihinde kurulan Trabzon Komnenosları Prensliği manastıra büyük destek verir ve Sümela nın parlak yılları başlar. Osmanlı İmparatorluğu döneminde de hakları korunan manastır, padişah fermanlarıyla yeni imtiyazlar kazanır. 18. yüzyıla gelindiğinde Sümela bir kez daha onarılır ve yeni freskler eklenir. Nihayet 19. yüzyıla gelindiğinde daha büyük yapılar eklenerek bugünkü muhteşem görünümünü kazanır. Bu dönemde Sümela nın şöhreti Avrupa ya kadar uzanır, manastırı ziyaret eden pek çok gezgin, kitaplarında Sümela yı anlatır yılları arasında Rus işgali altında kalan Trabzon ile birlikte Sümela nın da kaderi değişmeye başlar. İşgal yıllarında el konulan manastır, yavaş yavaş terkedilmeye başlanır ve 1923 yılında tamamen boşaltılır. Uzun yıllar harap halde kalan manastır, 1987 yılında içinde bulunduğu ormanlık alan ile birlikte milli park ilan edilerek koruma altına alınır. What is more admirable, the fact that it is carved in the steepest rocks, the fact that it is standing there since the 4 th century or the frescoes inside the monastery? The perfection of the dwellings carved on a steep cliff hard to reach even under present-day circumstances creates amazement. Admiration and amazement are the two words summarizing each visitor s reaction in front of the Sümela wonder... Together with the Hagia Sophia (Church) Museum, Sümela Monastery is one of the two historical buildings which attribute worldwide renown to Trabzon. Sources claim that the monastery was built by two priests, Barnabas and Sophranius from Athens under the reign of Byzantine Emperor Theodosius ( ). The Greek word melas meaning black is at the origin of the name Sümela, due to the name of the mountain against which the monastery is leaning called the Black Mountain (Karadağ) and to the black colour of a fresco depicting Virgin Mary inside the building. In the 6 th century, Emperor Justinianus orders the worn-out monastery to be restored. The restoration work undertaken under the supervision of General Belisarios leads the way to an extension of its dwellings. The Trebizond (Trabzon) Komnenos Principality founded in 1204 provides large-scale support to the monastery, thus contributing to its golden period. Sümela continues to flourish under the Ottoman Empire as well and enjoys additional privileges granted by Sultans decrees.
