1 Possessive Endings In English, the possession of an object is described by adding an s at the end of the possessor word separated by an apostrophe. If we are talking about a pen belonging to Hakan we would say: Hakan s pen possessor possessed In English the s tells us that there is possession. In Turkish, the ending used will change depending on who is being talked about, just like the endings change for the to be verb. The other major difference between English and Turkish is that in Turkish both the possessor and the possessed will have an ending. So, in the above example both Hakan and pen would have an ending. Some of these endings will be similar to the to be endings we have already seen and as usual they will follow vowel harmony. Turkish For Beginners Page 1 Lesson 17

2 First person singular: my: ben im (i)m This ending is the same as the to be ending (i)m. By adding it onto ben it turns it from I to my. It also needs to be added to the object being possessed. ben ben im benim ev ev im evim ben im ev im benim evim my house ben im kalem im benim kalemim my pen Even though this ending is the same as the to be ending, one difference is how it deals with vowel clashes. If the word ends in a vowel then just add m to the end, do not use the buffer letter like we did with to be. benim araba m benim arabam my car benim kedi m benim kedim my cat Remember, with the buffer letter it means to be, with just m it means my. kedi y im ben kediyim I am a cat kedi m benim kedim my cat Both the possessor and the possessed have the endings that give information about possession, so it s not always necessary to say the possessor part. If the word ends in a vowel just add the n at the end. 4 Third person singular: his/her/its: o n un (s)i To turn turns he/she/it to his/her/its you add in to the possesor o. Because of vowel harmony with the o this changes to un. In order to prevent the two vowels clashing, a buffer letter n is needed, making onun. o o n un onun (s)i is added to the possessed object. The (s) is used as a buffer when the word ends in a vowel. This follows the e type vowel harmony and can be leri or ları. ev ev leri evleri onların ev leri evleri their house onların kalem leri kalemleri their pen onların kedi leri kedileri their cat In everyday speech, people just use the third person singular ending. So, you will hear that more often, but you have to use onların to distinguish the plural from the singular.
