Kınalıada, eski adıyla Proti (Birinci), Prens Adaları nın Sarayburnu na en yakın olanıdır. Sirkeci den Adalar vapuruna bindiğinizde, Topkapı Sarayı nı, Ayasofya yı, altı minaresi ile muazzam bir görüntü arzeden Sultanahmet Camii ni geride bırakırken, Anadolu yakasındaki, Florence Nightingale in temel hemşirelik ilkelerini geliştirdiği görkemli Selimiye Kışlası ve çift kulesi ile Haydarpaşa Garının çekim alanına kapılıverirsiniz. Deniz üstündeki bu tarih yolculuğuna fazla dalmayın, çünkü çok geçmeden birinci adaya, yani Kınalıada ya varacaksınız. Kınalı ilk bakışta çok da cazip görünmeyebilir. Ancak İstanbul un her yeri gibi burası da keşfedilmeye değer tarihî ve doğal güzelliklerle doludur, merak etmeyin. Kınalıada, once known as Proti meaning first', is the closest o f the Princes Islands to the headland on which Topkapı Palace is situated. When you hoard the ferry from Sirkeci to Adalar (Islands) your gaze is attracted first to Topkapı Palace, Haghia Sofia, and Sultanahmet Mosque with its six minarets, and then as you approach the Asian shore, you are captured by the gravity field of Selimiye Barracks where Florence Nightingale developed the principles o f modern nursing and Haydarpaşa Station with its twin towers. But do not let yourself get too carried away by this journey into history, because soon you will arrive at Kınalıada, the first island. At first sight Kınalıada looks bare and treeless

After visiting the island s historic buildings take time out for a delicious meal at one of the small fish restaurants. Until the late 19th century most of the island s inhabitants were Greek and Armenian, but gradually from 1846 onwards, with the introduction o f a steam ferry service to the islands, Km aliada becam e a popular summer resort, particularly among the tradesmen of the Covered Bazaar. Bu süreçle birlikte artan Müslüman nüfus, adada bir cami ihtiyacını doğurdu. 1950 lerde Karaköy bölgesinin düzenlenmesi nedeniyle yıkımla karşı karşıya kalan, ünlü İtalyan mimarı Raimondo d Aronco nun Art Nouveau eseri Karaköy Mescidi nin Kınalıada ya taşınması söz konusu olmuş, ancak bu gerçekleşmemiş; bunun üzerine, oldukça modern mimarisiyle dikkat çeken, üçgen minareli, vitraylı bir cami inşa edilmiş. Adalara mahsus tarzda yapılmış ahşap konakların çoğu, çıkan yangınlar dolayısıyla bugüne kadar ulaşamamış. İlkbaharda gül ve hanımelleri ile süslenen küçük evler, onların yerini almış. 1942 yılında adaya elektriğin getirilmesini sağlayan Ali Boran ın adının verildiği iskele meydanının iki sokak ilerisinde bulunan Rum Ortodoks cemaatının kilisesi Panaghi nin, Bizans döneminde yapılmış üç önemli manastırdan birinin yıkıntılarının üzerine inşa edildiği sanılıyor. 1886 yılında inşa edilen kilisenin temelleri kazılırken Bizans tan kalma birçok eser bulunmuş. Bu tarihi eserlerin bir kısmı İngiltere ye kaçırılmış, bir kısmı da kaybolmuş. Elde kafinally, towards the middle of the 20th century it was decided that the island needed a mosque. When the roads at Karakóy were being widened in the 1950s it was at first decided to relocate Karakóy Mescid, a small art nouveau mosque constructed in the late 19th century by the Italian architect Raimondo d Aronco, on Kmahada. When this plan fell through an interesting modern mosque with a triangular minaret and stained glass windows was constructed. Being vulnerable to fire, few o f the original wooden houses o f Kmaliada and the other islands have survived to the present day. Bu sarnıçtan da bugün hiçbir iz yok. İkinci büyük manastır da adanın tepesinde bugünkü M etamorphosis Manastır K ilisesi nin bulunduğu Electricity came to the island in 1942, and the square near the pier is named after the man who made it happen, Ali Boran. Two streets beyond is the Greek Orthodox Panaghi Church, built in 1886 on what is thought to he the site o f one of the three main Byzantine monasteries on the island. When the foundations were being excavated large quantities of Byzantine artefacts were found, some o f which were smuggled to England. The others have never been traced. All that remains is a marble cornice carved with an acanthus leaf motif

Near the church was a cistern where in 1807 some ships belonging to the British fleet under the command o f Admiral Duckworth stocked up on water after anchoring off the island. Gustav Schlumberger in the 1890s and Ernest Mamboury in the 1940s both report seeing the mins of this cistern, although no trace o f it remains today. The second large monastery on Kmaliada stood on the hilltop where the monastery church o f the Metamorphosis is located today. All that remains of the monastery is a magnificent Byzantine column capital at the church door. The Byzantine emperor Romanus Diogenes (1067-1071) was imprisoned in this monastery after his defeat by the Seljuks at the battle o f Malazgirt (Manzikert) in 1071, and later buried here. The monastery was founded in the 9th century an d rebuilt on numerous occasions over the centuries, the last time being in the 19th century. The Armenian community on the island worships at the church o f St. Gregory the Illuminator, another sight not to be missed. This tiny island reflects the colourful cultural mosaic o f Istanbul, and its long history.
