A kdeniz mimarisinin efsanesi kimi zaman gerçeğini geride bırakır. Bunun yeni tamamlanan bir MYTHS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN DIVERCITY ARCHITECTS EXTENDS THE IDEA OF MEDITERRANEAN ARCHITECTURE IN THE PSYCHIKO HOUSE IN SUBURBAN ATHENS. The legend of Mediterranean architecture sometimes outstrips its reality. As with many other living traditions, the architecture of the Mediterranean has a historical identity that is in contrast to newer, more contemporary developments. The fact that the idea of Mediterranean architecture started off as a historicist style known as Mediterranean Revival in the U.S. in the early 20th century further complicates the issue. The Mediterranean Revival influenced by Spanish precedents was a popular style of architecture from the 1910s to 1940s in America s warm weather states such as California and Florida. This historicist style was characterized by stuccoed wall surfaces, flat or low-pitched terracotta and tile roofs, arches, scrolled or tile-capped parapet walls. The image of hilltop mansions of Hollywood stars in the Mediterranean style visible in films such as Sunset Boulevard was the impetus for the further popularity of Mediterranean architecture in millions of examples in post-war American suburbia. In contrast, in Europe the Mediterranean modern evolved not as a style but as an approach developed in a more organic way in line with modernism s interest in space and light. In this architecture, flowing space connecting indoor to outdoor areas integrated with the dramatic topography of rock, sea and vegetation highlighted the environment more so than style or form. In an important aspect of his legacy, Le Corbusier would spend the end of his life in a basic example of this architecture in a small wood cabin on a stone base of his own design integrated into the seaside of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France, swimming everyday in the Mediterranean. Today the ideals of this modern Mediterranean architecture are showing new and distinct tendencies especially in the Mediterranean countries in parallel to the evolution of new modes of living. Historicism and rehashed late modernism in Mediterranean architecture is now being replaced by a direct engagement with more complex client needs, increasingly urbanized conditions and desire to connect to nature and the past. Mimar bu duvarlardan evin khthonik çekirdeği for their strong integration of architecture and lifestyle. Led by founding partner Nikolas Travasaros in a practice that is aligned with his father Takis Travasaros firm trac, the design for the Pyschiko House is a dramatic example of how contemporary living and urban conditions can generate new architectural design. The 600 m2 residence for a family of five is located on a 1,000 m2 plot in Psychiko, a hilly low-density upscale suburb in the northeast of Athens overlooking the 2004 Olympic Park in nearby Marousi. The designers needed to integrate the diverse interests of the clients leading an active social life with immediate and extended family and friends, and also acc0mmodate a substantial art and design collection. At an urban scale the design also had to balance the openness needed to take advantage of the dramatic views towards the city from the sloping site, while providing privacy from adjacent homes. The architect s strategy was to align each level of the home with one of these programs: the lower floor for their collection, the upper floor for family life and the middle floor for indoor and outdoor socializing. The design consists of a number of sweeping forms that project through the site organizing a free flow of space for various functions. These shapes and volumes typical of the computer generated design idiom of the 21st century expand the use of space and volume 96 NATURA MART - NİSAN 2013 / MARCH - APRIL 2013

Moreso these open, sunlit spaces are in line with the style of modern Mediterranean architecture, but advance it further through a basic yet profound use of stone. This is achieved through a series of raking lines and arcs in white walls that slice through the site generating living spaces as they intersect with the stone clad walls of the houses lower floor. This stone, a grey quartzite arranged in strips, is the primary element connecting the house to its site and geography. According to the architects, the stone quarries that dot the landscape of Attica, Greece inspired the use of quartzite. These walls resolve symbolically and practically ground and sky, matter and space in a multivalent design strategy. The architect refers to these walls as the chthonic core of the house with the word chtonic meaning in Greek in, under, or beneath the earth, in reference to the earthy and subterranean but also pertains to deities or spirits of the underworld where it has connotations of the fertility of the earth and fertility in general. The quartzite walls are buried into the ground creating the foundations of the house structurally and symbolically. This symbolism is especially of interest in how the architects desire to connect to the meanings behind material, history and religion in a very spare design for a decidedly contemporary social setting. The physical and spiritual properties that stone has always conveyed for human civilization are readily apparent here in Divercity s design. The application of stone is forceful, elemental yet subtly existential. But importantly this expansive use of stone throughout the project, (white marble is used in the lower floor, a veined white marble for the kitchen), shows the potentials of a new type of Mediterranean architecture with material and spiritual tendencies. In the case of the Psychiko House the architects have met the needs of an open, indoor and outdoor space to take advantage of the Mediterranean climate and natural/urban setting. But they have taken a subtle and existential step further with stone as their means of material and symbolic expression. In their understated architecture, Divercity has given stone a deeper meaning tied to the land and it symbolic power but in vital forms and volumes tied to 21st century design.
