Basın Bülteni Press Release (Please scroll down for English) ERGİN ÇAVUŞOĞLU & GÜLSÜN KARAMUSTAFA GUGGENHEIM, NEW YORK DA 29 Nisan 5 Ekim 2016 tarihleri arasında Guggenheim New York'ta Sara Raza küratörlüğünde düzenlenen, But a storm is blowing from paradise: Contemporary Art of the Middle East and Africa [Fakat Bir Fırtına Esmekte Cennetten Bu Tarafa: Ortadoğu ve Afrika'dan Güncel Sanat] başlıklı sergide yer alacak olan eserler müzenin kalıcı koleksiyonuna dahil ediliyor.
ERGİN ÇAVUŞOĞLU S & GÜLSÜN KARAMUSTAFA S WORKS AT GUGGENHEIM, NEW YORK Rampa is pleased to announce that works by Ergin Çavuşoğlu and Gülsün Karamustafa have been acquired and will be exhibited as part of the Guggenheim New York s show But a storm is blowing from paradise: Contemporary Art of the Middle East and Africa, curated by Sara Raza, the Guggenheim USB MAP Curator, Middle East and North Africa. The exhibition, which is on view from April 29 October 5, 2016, features works that have recently been acquired for the Guggenheim s permanent collection, and includes installations, photographs, sculptures, videos, and works on paper from several artists from the region. The exhibition will travel to Istanbul s Pera Museum in 2017. About the Acquired Works Ergin Çavuşoğlu, Crystal & Flame 2010, four-channel synchronized (1920x1080) video installation with sound, 00:38:15 Installation view from PEER, London, 2010. C. Dorley-Brown Crystal & Flame was commissioned and presented by Film and Video Umbrella in collaboration with PEER. Funded as part of Free to Air by London Councils. Supported by Arts Council England. In Ergin Çavuşoğlu s Crystal & Flame, the transitory aspects of everyday existence acquire an enduring, almost elemental significance. Shot on location across London, it continues a long line of videos by the artist in which everyday rituals or actions are prefigured by motifs from wellknown literary sources, in this case an especially lyrical passage from Italo Calvino s Six Memos for the New Millennium. The piece comprises three sets of imagery: the first of which depicts the interior of a small Turkish café in North London a home-from-home for its regular clientele, where the day-today sustenance of simple food (cooked on a rudimentary open grill) is amplified by the warmth of human company. Observing a party of friends at one of the restaurant s tables, Çavuşoğlu contrasts the intimacy and spontaneity of their interactions with the cold, hard material form of a precious stone that is being cut and polished. A symbol of the ineffable and the eternal, and an index of worldly wealth, this glittering gem is also a reminder of the former diamond trade of
the old East End; now almost gone, as the city, in the heat and flux of its continual transformation, has re-forged and re-made itself. These parallel scenes are counterpointed by a third component that shows a group of actors rehearsing an adaptation of a short story by Chekhov. In the story, the Utopian political sentiments of its artist-narrator are examined against the harsh realities of peasant life and subsequently challenged from the perspective of memory. As the actors and director go back over their lines, adding extra nuance and emphasis, the naturalism of the language is itself polished and honed, in pursuit of a lucidity of expression that both reflects and goes beyond the reality of the moment. text taken from the commissioners of the work, the FVU (Film and Video Umbrella), and funded by the London Councils and supported by Arts Council England. Gülsün Karamustafa, Create your own story with the given material 1997, fabric, synthetic cotton, 30 pieces at 30 x 50 cm Installation view from Environ 27 Ans: Pratiques Artistic et Feminism exhibition, Palais de l Athénéé, Geneve, 1997 Having lived through three severe military coups throughout her lifetime, Karamustafa s outlook on childbirth leans to the existential; the dual of life and death weighs heavy on the mind of those whose geography makes freedom and safety a question instead of a right. This installation relates to the insecurity in giving birth in places of instability, to controlled childhood, and to questions about the parameters of existence. The soft white undershirts, (a
baby s first garment in life), are sewn shut with black thread by the artist. Impossible to enter, and of stark contrast to the softness and associations of the cloths, here Karamustafa acts in place of the geographical realities she is privy to, restricting and controlling the materials with this black thread. In naming the work Create Your Own Story with the Given Material, Karamustafa smartly leaves interpretation of the work to the audience, but with restriction, with her materials of choice. This ironic give and take of free will is precisely what she speaks of with the piece. Taking the tabula rasa of the viewer, and then manipulating and subverting meanings in much the same way she believes certain cultures and societies do with their children. The viewers are free to interact with the materials as they wish. *please note that Karamustafa s work, while having been acquired, will not show in the New York version of the show but will show at the Pera Museum show in 2017.
