PLEASE SEE ENGLISH VERSION ON PAGE 11 Sevgili Dostlar, Soğuk ve uzun bir kışı neredeyse arkamızda bıraktık, ilkbahar kapıda 2017 nin ilk çeyreğinde neler yaptık, köpeklerimiz ne durumda sizinle paylaşalım istedik. 2016 yılında 88 tane köpeğimiz yuvalandı. 88 az bir rakam değil; ama 2015 e oranla %25 gibi bir düşüş yaşamışız sahiplendirme sayımızda. Sebepler belli Biliyorsunuz geçen yıl turizm sezonu hiç parlak değildi. Dolayısıyla uçuş gönüllülerimizin sayısında inanılmaz bir düşüş oldu. Köpeklerimizi Pegasus Havayolları ile uçuruyorduk fakat Pegasus evcil hayvan taşımayı durdurdu. Bir de üzerine Avrupa Topluluğu Türkiye den evcil hayvan alımı kurallarını ağırlaştırıp oldukça yüksek giriş vergisine tabi tutunca sahiplendirme iyice zorlaştı. Bu bültende sizden ilk ricamız bu olsun; Dalaman dan Hollanda ve Almanya ya seyahat ederseniz bize haber verin lütfen. Uçuş gönüllüsü olmak tamamen yasal ve problemsiz bir süreç. Tüm işleri biz yapıyoruz siz sadece seyahat ediyorsunuz. Geçen yıl 88 köpeğimiz sahiplendi ama 148 yeni köpeğimiz oldu ve artık nüfusumuz 190-200 civarı oluyor. Yeni yerimize taşınalı ancak bir yıl oldu ama sayımızı 150 köpekte sabit tutma, geniş bahçelerde rahat ve özgür gezinmelerini sağlama hayallerimiz de suya düştü. Bir çok geniş alanı tekrar tekrar bölmek zorunda kaldık anormal nüfus artışımıza yetebilmek için.
Tırmanıcı canlar için teller daha da yükseltildi! Kaçaklar için bazı ünitelerin üstü tellendi. 200 köpeği doyurmak için ayda 2 tondan fazla kuru mama alıyoruz; bedeli neredeyse 8.000.-TL. Bu rutin gider bizi gerçekten çok zorluyor. O yüzden elimden bir şey gelmiyor diye düşünmeyin barınağa mama bağışı yapabilirsiniz. Köpeklerimizi doyurabilmek için veteriner faturalarımızı bekletiyoruz sürekli olarak ve veteriner borcumuz astronomik boyutta çünkü harcamalarımız sadece barınaktaki köpeklerimizle sınırlı değil. Maddi durumu iyi olmayan ya da köpek edinip bakımına para ayırmayan insanlara da yardım ediyoruz. Kısırlaştırma ameliyatlarını, veteriner müdahelesi gerektiren kaza veya hastalık gibi durumlarda tedavi masraflarını üstlenmek zorunda kalıyoruz. Hemen bir örnek verelim; Fıstık Fıstık ı ilk gördüğümüzde kahrolmuştuk. Had safhada uyuzu vardı, zaten yara bere içinde olan derisi pire ve kene kaynıyordu ve korkunç koşullarda bakılıyordu. Ev sahibi köpeğin ailesine yeni bir yuva yapması için izin vermiyordu. Olduğu yeri elimizden geldiğince dezenfekte edip uyuz tedavisine başladık. Yavaşta olsa uyuz iyileşmeye başladı. Köpeğin ailesi başka bir yere taşınınca elimizde olan eski kulübe ve çitleri kullanarak Fıstığa yeni evin bahçesinde tertemiz bir yuva hazırladık. Şimdi tamamen sağlığına kavuştu ve ailesiyle çok mutlu.

Bir de sırf yaşlandıkları veya hasta oldukları için terk edilen, atılan köpekler var; Happy gibi, Topal, Bonnie ve Ula gibi. İşte onların hikâyeleri:
Happy onu bulduğumuzda o kadar kötü, o kadar zavallı bir durumdaydı ki inanamazsınız. O güzelim hayvan bir deri bir kemik kalmış ve uyuzdan bedeninin her yeri kanlı yaralarla dolmuştu. Doğru bakım, sevgi ve şevkatle kısa zamanda sağlığına ve ihtişamına kavuştu. Fazla söze gerek yok fotoğraflar her şeyi anlatıyor zaten. Happy önce Happy sonra
Topal ı bulduğumuzda gençlik hastalığı vardı. Hastalığı ölmeden atlatmış ama merkezi sinir sistemini etkileyen bu hastalık Topal da bir çok arıza bırakmıştı. Hareketlerini koordine edemiyor, yürüyemiyor ve hatta yemek dahi yiyemiyordu. Fakat o kadar hayata bağlı ve tatlı bir köpek ki yaşamaya ve düzelmeye karar verdi adeta. Hâlâ çok kuvvetli ve çok pahalı bir tedavi görüyor ve bu tedavi en az 6 ay daha devam edecek. Topal ın tedavisine katkıda bulunmak isterseniz lütfen bizi arayın. Onun gerçekten iyileşme yolu uzun ve yardımınıza ihtiyacı var. Topal koruyucu ailesinin evinde engelli düzeneğini kullanmayı öğreniyor.
Bonnie aslında Göcek ten. Bize kardeşiyle beraber bir aileye verildiği söylenmişti. Geçen yıl Dalaman tarafında sakat bir köpek ihbarı geldi. Hemen gidip baktık ve karşımıza Göcek li Bonnie çıktı. Oraya nasıl gitti hiçbir fikrimiz yok. Hemen aldık kanatlarımızın altına tabii ki ama Bonnie nin sakatlığı burada tedavi edilebilecek cinsten değil. Aslında çok uğraştık protez bile yapıldı ama olmadı. Daha güzel bir şey oldu Bonnie yurtdışında sahiplendi ve yeni ailesi gerekli her türlü tıbbi müdaheleyi yaptıracak. Bol şans Bonnie! Ula ise daha geçen hafta bulundu. Aktif gönüllülerimizden biri onu Ula yakınlarında bir köyde görmüş. Köyün ekmek fırınının önünde duruyormuş. Fırın sahipleri acıyıp beslemeye başlamışlar ama çok ürkek olduğundan yanına yaklaşıp yakalayamamışlar ve en az 2 yıldır bu şekilde yaşadığını söylüyorlar. Sonunda tabii ki o köye kadar gidilip bu zavallı, muhtemelen acı içinde çaresizce yaşama tutunan vahşi kızı gidip aldık. İleri derecede uyuz, kulak uyuzu, pire ve kenesi var. Göğsünde alınması gereken bir ur var ve bağışıklık sistemi neredeyse tamamen çöktüğünden tedavisi çok uzun süreceğe benziyor. Şu anda klinikte ancak biraz toparlanınca koruyucu aile yanına geçecek. Ula ya yardım etmek isterseniz yine bizimle irtibata geçmeniz yeterli. Ula kapanda. Klinikte tedavisi başladı. Her zaman ki gibi kedi kısırlaştırma çalışmalarımız da devam ediyor. 2010 da başlayan Eleanor un Kedi Kısırlaştırma Projesi sayesinde bugüne kadar binlerce kedi kısırlaştırdık. 2016 da 108 de kalmışız. Havalar biraz daha ısınır ısınmaz tekrar harekete geçeceğiz. Bu sene en azından 2016 nin iki katına çıkmaya niyetliyiz çünkü sürekli kedi atılıyor ve nüfus asla sabitlenemiyor.

Dear Friends, Now that winter is nearly over, we would like to share with you our challenges for 2017. In 2016, 88 dogs were re-homed this is a big drop of more than 25 % compared to 2015. There are a few reasons why that happened the new EU rules make importing dogs from Turkey more difficult and much more expensive, the tourist situation was not brilliant last summer so we had less flight volunteers and Pegasus (which was our main carrier from Dalaman airport) stopped flying pets in cargo. So this year, more than ever, we need your help. If you happen to fly from Southern Turkey to Holland and/or Germany, please get in touch with us. Being a flight volunteer to accompany dogs is perfectly legal and trouble free. If we re-homed 88 dogs in 2016, we rescued 148 dogs during the same period We now have an average of 190 to 200 dogs under our wing. It has been one year since we are at our new shelter. Unfortunately our dream of having maximum 150 dogs running around in big gardens did not come true as we had to separate the bigger gardens to make room for 200 dogs. But we also separated the playground areas so that more dogs can run free at the same time. Our new sections and play grounds :
We had to raise some fences for the climbers! We had to cover some sections for the Houdinis To feed 200 dogs, we buy more than 2 tons of dry food per month appr. Euros 2,000 Euros. It is, of course, a challenge to find so much money every month. Unfortunately, far too often, we have to choose not to pay the vet bills to be able to buy food and our bills to the vet are astronomic The activity of the association does not stop with the shelter. We regularly help dogs whose owners are in a precarious financial position sterilisation, medical and veterinary care after accidents, medical help when ill etc Herewith a striking example, the story of Fistik : When we first went to visit Fistik, we were horrified. She had severe mange, was covered with fleas and was living in terrible conditions. Unfortunately, at the time, there was little we could do for her accommodation as the land lord refused us access to the site. We could only help with disinfection of the place and the medical treatment of the mange. Slowly mange got better. We collected material, second hand kennel etc and eventually, when Fistik and her family moved home, we could offer Fistik a clean and spacious shelter. She now has a very happy life with her very happy family.

There are also these unfortunate dogs who are very sick and no longer wanted by their owners or who were living on the streets, like Happy, Topal, Bonie and Ula. Herewith their story :
Happy was in such a bad condition when we found him very skinny and suffering of mange! Thanks to the good care he received, he is back to good health. Happy before Happy after Topal When we found her, Topal had survived distemper but she suffers of the consequences of the illness, which affects the central nervous system. Topal has great difficulties to coordinate her movements to walk, eat etc But she has an amazing spirit and wants to get better. Topal is having a very heavy treatment, also very expensive treatment The treatment should go ahead for the next 6 months. Bonnie Bonnie used to live in Gocek with her brother and we knew them. We were told that they had been given to another family. A few months ago, we heard of a handicapped dog found 15 km away from Gocek. We went to get her and were quite shocked when we recognised Bonnie! We have no idea how she arrived there! We took Bonnie under our wing. She is very handicapped and needs medical treatment she cannot receive locally. We tried very hard she even got a prosthesis but it was not enough to help her. Bonnie is now in Europe where she will get the right medical orthopedic treatment. Bonnie, we are so happy you are getting the life you deserve! Good luck with your operation! Unfortunately we do not know what happened to her brother.
Ula Ula is our last rescue. She was spotted in a village by a member of our association who went to rescue her. The bakery people of the village took pity of her and fed her but could not take her to a vet as she is quite timid. They think that she has been in that condition for at least 2 years! Ula has very severe mange, fleas, ear mites etc She has a tumor on her breast, which must be removed. Her immune system is very low and her treatment will be very long. She currently is at the clinic and will go to a foster home when she is a little better. Ula in the trap Ula at the clinic We also try to keep the stray cats population under control thanks to the Eleanor neutering project (which started in 2010) we neutered 108 cats in 2016. As soon as the weather is warmer next month, we will start catching cats again and we aim to double this number in 2017.
