From the Editor! As the editor-in-chief of KADIN/WOMAN 2000 - Journal for Woman Studies, I am happy to address the readers once again. Although we could not publish this issue in time due to delays for several reasons, we still hope to catch up with our calendar and continue our contribution to academic publications on several aspects of women s issues. We encountered several technical problems during the editing and publishing process of this issue as well as the previous ones. Although it was stated in our previous volume to publish two issues in one volume for some issues, in accord with the academic indexing principles we have to shift to our normal routine and publish each issue separately. Sticking to our strict policy we did our best to accept or reject papers after blind screening by experts and qualified referees, as well as, the editorial board s decision. Thus speedy work was not possible within the evaluation process and acceptance or rejection of each paper was sometimes concluded in two years time. However, the referees decisions were not usually the end of the process. It was the task of the editors then to deal with other problems regarding the format of the articles, copyright laws and other matters. And finally we faced other serious problems since usually most of the articles submitted are not in accordance with our journal s format and after a long work of editing, some of these were resubmitted to other journals for publication. We expect academics to submit unpublished papers for publication in our journal. This present volume includes four articles, a bibliographical work and three book reviews on various topics including gender studies in linguistics, psychology, history and architecture. The article of Alissa Tolstokorova is a study concerning women s rights from a linguistic perspective. An interesting study by Türkan Ulusu Uraz and Nilay Ünal Gülmez discusses the issue of woman in relation to space in particular regarding her long term struggle to appear in public space and professional life within a long time period. Andaç Demirtafl-Madran argues a psycho-sociological issue concerning gender differences in the concept of jealousy in close relations from empirical and theoretical point of view. The last article is about Ottoman women in Turkey based on Sheriye Records (Court Registers). Hava Selçuk s article deals with the women converted to Islam and their social status in Kayseri province according to the court registers during the years 1650-1750. We are happy to inform that KADIN/WOMAN 2000 will be included in the EBSCO database in addition to GenderWatch, Contemporary Women s Issues, General Academic ASAP International, IT One File, General Reference Center, General Reference Center Gold, IT Custom, MLA International Bibliography, Index Islamicus and Turkologischer Anzeiger through which together with the former three
viii databases the journal will continue to appear as an electronic journal as well. Although women and gender studies have become important global research topics, we still feel the uneasiness not to have been able to give much assistance to millions of helpless women and children facing rather serious problems due to the lack of education or facilities to keep them secure in the world. Still many women and girls are subjected to sexual harassment, violence, discrimination in legal matters or forced labouring even in modern countries while rape is another serious problem in lands under war. Lack of education, unhygienic living conditions and forced migrations are mostly affecting the lives of children and women while forced marriages, child marriages, honour killings and female genital mutilations are serious problems on Asian and African continents. As it was recently published by WUNRN (The Women s United Nations Report Program and Network) one of the most devastating consequences of the HIV/AIDS epidemic is the growing number of children the disease has orphaned. Accordingly globally, 15.2 million children under the age of 18 have lost one or both parents to AIDS. By 2010, this number could reach 25 million. These orphans unfortunately are subjected to illiteracy, malnourished and ill-health since they have to work at early age so as to take care of their families while a majority of them are also infected with HIV/AIDS virus like their deceased parents. Therefore, we intend to publish our forthcoming issues in 2007 and 2008 on special issues such as Women and War, Women and Migration, Violence and Gender and Health and Women. I would like to express our acknowledgements to all those who did serious work for the reviewing and editing of the papers, and publicity of the journal. We are indebted to Prof. Dr. Ufuk Taneri, the rector of Eastern Mediterranean University, the first democratically elected rector of EMU, as well as one of the co-founders of Centre for Woman Studies, for her supports for providing the necessary funding, as well as to Prof. Dr. Halil Güven, the former rector of Eastern Mediterranean University, for his encouragements and help in keeping this journal running, as well as, selecting the Centre for Women Studies as the centre for excellence given the past success of the journal. Special thanks goes to Prof. Dr. Ayhan Bilsel, the Chair of the Executive Board of Emupress, Assist. Prof. Dr. Fatma Güven-Lisaniler, the director of the Center for Women Studies, to my colleagues Prof. Dr. Hülya Argunflah, Donna M. Ruzzano, Assist Prof. Isaac Z. Lerner, Assist.
