19 22 April: Electronic Music Workshop Richard Boulanger Richard Boulanger was born in 1956 and holds a Ph.D. in Computer Music from the University of California, San Diego where he worked at the Center for Music Experiment's Computer Audio Research Lab. He has continued his computer music research at Bell Labs, CCRMA, the MIT Media Lab, Interval Research, and IBM and worked closely for many years with Max Mathews and Barry Vercoe. Boulanger has premiered his original interactive works at the Kennedy Center, and appeared on stage performing his Radio Baton and MIDI PowerGlove Concerto with the Krakow and Moscow Symphonies. His music is recorded on the NEUMA label. Currently, Dr. Boulanger is a Professor of Music Synthesis at the Berklee College of Music where he has been honored with both the Faculty of the Year Award and the President's Award. He has published articles on computer music education and composition in all the major electronic music and music technology magazines. Müzikte Açık Yapıt ve Grafik Notasyon (Yah#ibey Atölyesi 23) Yah!ibey workshop calı!maları içinde yer alan ve 16-31 Temmuz 2010 tarihleri arasında gerçekle!en "Müzikte Açık Yapıt ve Grafik Notasyon" ba!lıklı atölye çalı!masına, lisans, yüksek lisans ya da doktora düzeyinde e"itim gören, kompozisyon, grafik tasarım ve çalgı ö"rencileri katıldi. Çalı!manın ana hedefi, besteci ve grafik tasarımcıların ortak çalı!masıyla, açık yapıt niteli"i ta!ıyan müzik yapıtlarının üretilmesi ve ortaya konan bu çalı!maların icracılar tarafından seslendirilmesi oldu. Hedeflenen üretimin açık yapıt olması, hem bestecinin, hem grafik tasarımcının, hem de icracının yaratım sürecinde e! düzeyde rol almasını getiriyor. Atölyeye 3 besteci, 3 grafik tasarımcı ve 4 icracı katıldi, ayrıca 3 konuk icracı da çalı!malar içinde yer alacak. Besteciler ve grafik tasarımcılar, her ekipte 1 besteci ve 1 tasarımcının yer aldı"ı 3 ekip olu!turdu ve her ekip kendi özerk çalı!malarını gerçekle!tirdi. Besteciyle tasarımcının çalı!ması "açık yapıt" ve "grafik notasyon" ilkelerini gözeten ortak bir üretim ba"lamı olu!turdu. Ba!ka bir deyi!le, besteci belirledi"i müzikal yapıyı, geleneksel notasyondan tümüyle ba"ımsızla!tırarak, narratif bir anlatımla (yani herhangi bir görsel kodlamaya ba!vurmadan) tasarımcıya aktardı, tasarımcı da yapıtı tüm parametreleriyle (yükseklik, süre, tını, gürlük, yer [topos]) aktaran görsel kodları tasarladı. Burada üretilen gerçeklik bir yandan müzikal bir yapı tanımladı, ama bir yandan da müzikal üretimi tamamlayan görsel bir estetik içerdi. Sonuçta belirli bir temsille ortaya çıkan "açık yapıt", icracıların üretimiyle ses ortamına aktarıldı. #cracılar sadece yapıtların nihai seslendirmesinde yer almadı, ekiplerin çalı!ma sürecine de katılacak, gerek bestecinin müzikal yapıyı olu!turmasında, gerekse de besteciyle tasarımcının ileti!im kurmasında etkin bir rol oynadı. Atölye çalı!ması, tartı!ma ve seminerlerle desteklendi. Çalı!ma süresince gerçekle!tirilen seslendirmeler kaydedildi, daha sonra da bunlar seminerlerde irdelendi, tartı!ıldı. Ayrıca atölye yönetmeni ve e!yönetmenleri tarafından gerçekle!tirilen seminerlerde, gerek notasyonun tarihi, gerekse de müzikte açık yapıt üretimi ve grafik notasyon, yapıtlar üzerinden ele alındı, ses ortamına aktarılmı! örnekler dinlendi. Atölye, çalı!ma sürecinde ortaya çıkan yapıtların, grafik notasyonların sunumu e!li"inde seslendirildi"i genel bir dinletiyle sona erdi. Post-Tonal Müzik Dersi Ö"renci Konseri The course will concentrate on post-tonal repertoire and will deal how analytical approaches can enrich our experience of modern musical works. This is a course aiming to understand new music by analyzing early atonal repertoire, Second Viennese School (Schoenberg, Webern, Berg), post-war serialism, aleatory music, minimalism, and spectral music. The focus of the seminars is listening music, analyzing it, and then discussing how the analysis contributes to our understanding of the works under study. Creative Workshop and Ensemble Dersi Konseri This course is planned as a continuation of the Introduction to Composition course. Students will be working on a systematic approach to the art of composing through analyzing different styles of music and writing pieces for a specific instrumentation and duration as directed by the instructor. The students will regularly listen to, analyze and discuss many styles and forms of various music, from western classical music to most contemporary genres. Weekly assignments of written projects are required. The projects of the students will be performed regularly by a student ensemble. SGA Workshop The concept for this workshop was inspired by John Maeda s Human Powered Computer Experiment http://www.imrf.or.jp/hpce.html. In this experiment Maeda recreated the internal operations of a simple computer using people to physically transport handwritten instructions and data to and from the CPU, RAM, FPU, etc. Participating in this type of experiment enables one to transfer abstract concepts from their body to their brain. In a similar spirit, this workshop develops a group workflow using the model of a simple genetic algorithm (SGA) with the result being an emergent work of music/sound art. Participants need only bring a laptop (Ethernet and/or Wi-Fi card is needed), their favorite audio software tools, a web browser and a spirit of experimentation and exploration. The idea of using a SGA as a conceptual framework evolved out of my research in information flow used as a catalyst to construct emergent content. Also, while doing research for a project that utilized genetic algorithms I saw that many of the ideas embodied in the SGA could also be used to construct a framework for my open source content creation workshop.the SGA workflow for the group is constructed in the following fashion: A random pool of open source sound files is established on a server and will serve as the gene pool a fitness function is applied to sound files (implementation of the fitness function is still being developed) the resulting parent files are then moved into a mating pool two parent files are randomly chosen by workshop participants to mate mating is accomplished by applying various crossover operations to the parent sound files resulting in the creation of two offspring random mutation is also applied to the offspring all of the offspring sound files are moved into the gene pool and the parents are killed in both the mating and gene pools the process is iterated until a work starts to take shape The primary purpose of mapping the simple genetic algorithm to content creation is to stimulate new ways of working with open source materials. Participants must bring a laptop (Ethernet and/or Wi-Fi card is needed), their favorite audio software tools, a web browser and a spirit of experimentation and exploration. Kim Cascone Kim Cascone has been involved with electronic music for more than 20 years since his studies at Berklee College of Music and at the New School (with Dana McCurdy) during the 1970s. In the 1980s Cascone worked with David Lynch as Assistant Music Editor on both Twin Peaks and Wild at Heart. He left the film industry in 1991 to concentrate on Silent Records, a label that he founded in 1986, transforming it into the U.S.'s premier electronic music label. He sold Silent Records in 1996, at the height of its success, in order to pursue a career as a sound designer. He has worked for Thomas Dolby's company Headspace as a sound designer and composer and for Staccato Systems where he oversaw the design of new sounds for games using algorithmic synthesis. Since 1980, Kim has released more than 15 albums of electronic music and has collaborated with Keith Rowe, Peter Rehberg, Oval, Scanner, Carsten Nicolai, Doug Aitken, and David Toop among others. He has performed at festivals in North America and Europe (Lovebytes, Micro 2 Mutek, Transmissions, Observatori) and has lectured on Post-Digital Music internationally.
