Ağırlıklı Müslümanların yaşadığı Hamra da hem sıcaktan korunmak hem de evin mahremiyetini gizlemek amacıyla büyük perdeler vardır. Şehrin doğusuna gittiğiniz de ise sizi Fransız mimarisinden etkilenmiş Art Deco balkonlar karşılar. Şehrin iç savaştan en çok etkilenen Achrafieh bölgesi adeta insanların hikâyelerini balkonlarıyla anlatır. Bazı panjurlar kapalıdır. Muhtemelen sahipleri savaştan bıkıp yurt dışına yerleşmiştir. Further East in the city, Art Deco balconies inspired by French architecture welcome you. The balconies of Achrafieh, the region most affected by the Civil war, tell the history of the people. Some blinds are shut; the owners were most likely fed up with the war and migrated abroad. Some are spotless; their owners have obviously been holding on to life. Another balcony is in ruins; its residents are too busy struggling with life in Beirut to pay attention to their balconies. Furthermore, these balconies make up the fabric of the city so well; they are in harmony like the 18 different religions and denominations living side by side in the city. Beirut is a small city. If the weather is nice, visit Harissa, half an hour from the city. You can take the cable car from 10 am to 10 pm every day, pass so close to the buildings that you could reach out and touch them and for 9,000 LBP, you can get to the top of the hill to the Virgin Mary statue. From Harissa, you can proceed to Byblos, a small coastal town that is today on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Byblos, the birthplace of the alphabet, is the oldest city in the world and lends its name to the Bible. You can taste the seafood (great calamari) at Chez Pepe in Byblos. What s more, you know you ll be dining where celebrities like Kim Novak, Ann-Margaret, Ginger Rogers, Anita Ekberg, and Ava Gardner dined before you. Byblos resembles the southern coastal towns of Turkey. My three favourite shops in the market: a souvenir shop called Memoire du Temps, the Diane Ferjane that offers modernised and Lebanese versions of 19th century clothing and the bookshop, Gibran s Lebanon, which primarily sells books by Khalil Gibran.
