A fter working 25 years for BC Ferries which is the largest ferry operator in Canada, 6 years ago Mr. Len Roueche was recruited by Interferry to become their first full time CEO. Interferry has been in existence now for 33 years. During the last 5 years its membership has been doubled. There are 215 member companies from 25 countries now. One of the main activities of Interferry is the annual conference which we hold in a different city every year, says Mr. Roueche. The conference was held in Hong Kong last year, this year it is going to be in Istanbul and in the upcoming year, New York city. Approximately delegates come to the conferences with their about 75 spouses for the spouse programmes as well. We talked with Interferry CEO, Len Roueche on the upcoming Interferry Conference, IDO s presidency, financial crisis and the ferry industry. He points out, City chosen must be the central place of the industrial activities and Istanbul fulfills this. It is historically and culturally a very attractive city and also in business manner as well. 2 remarkable. There is such a large operation going on- probably the largest in the world in terms of types of ferries and types of services they have. How was the process to choose IDO for the Interferry presidency? It is not a very exact process. The Board of Directors is always working to 4 years ahead of our conferences. We are now thinking for the conferences in 2011 and One thing we do is to do conference in Europe every second year. Two years ago we were in Stockholm and this year we are in Europe and in 2011 we will be in Europe again. That is one of the criteria. We look for the city that is attractive for number of reasons and also look for a company whose head become recruitable to the Board of Directors. That was 3 years ago we elected Dr. Paksoy to the Board of Directors. By his enthusiasm and his interest in Interferry we knew that he would be a good president for Interferry and a good host for the conference. How are the outcomes of the conferences? 3 advantages do these conferences provide for the members and also for the host country? Reasons for moving the conference to different cities each year is to attract more numbers and more interest to Interferry. We are a global association but our main strength is in Europe, North America, Australia. Asia, Africa are places where we want to continue to grow much strongly. For our members it is really the opportunity to see a new region and to see a new ferry operation. The conference itself is international but the presentations will focus on Istanbul with the topics certainly in the interest of the members but still there is a certain highlight and focus on Istanbul. What is important for our members is to see the operation first hand, like seeing the operation of a company like IDO first hand. And many companies think they are really good at what they do and everybody can learn things seeing other companies in operation and different applications. There are a number of cities now in the North America and Europe such as London, New York city, San Francisco, Vancouver These cities were doing transportation by means of ferries before but then they developed very good tunnels, bridges, roads and ferry services declined over the years. Now there is great congestion in many cities. They are turning back to the water again. Many of the large cities like Hong Kong, Istanbul have well developed urban ferry systems and then we have some cities which have completely new urban ferry Len Roueche transportation. Hong Kong daki konferansa hemen hemen hiç feribot hizmetinin verilmedi i ve trafi in büyük bir sorun oldu u Nijerya dan 9 delege gelmiflti. Geliflmek istiyorlar ve stanbul daki konferansa son derece güçlü bir flekilde kat lacaklar. Çünkü burada nelerin oldu- unu ö renmek istiyorlar. 4 ferry service to solve their congestion problems and looking to Istanbul for advice and assistance. In Hong Kong we had 9 delegates from Nigeria- very congested city virtually no ferry service and they want to develop and they will exist with a very strong presence in the conference in Istanbul. Because they want to learn what is happening here as well. It is an opportunity to learn how other people are doing the things but also of course creates network between people that is one of the main outcomes of the conference. It is important to contact with people for all the year not in the conference only. Most of the members attend the conference, is it right? Out of 250 people; 75 percent of the attendance will be members and the rest will not be members but hopefully potential. You expect potential numbers to join despite the financial crisis? What are your expectations for the future? That is truly a challenge for our industry and our conference. What we need to emphasise from our conference point of view, this is an opportunity to help companies survive this crisis. If you are in good times, in good economic conditions it is not hard to find customers. In the past five years if you were an engine manufacturer you did not need to worry about finding a customer. If you were a shipbuilder, you had an orderbook full three to four years. Now times get tighter. You need to start make more contacts instead of working with the old ones. Our association and conference brings these people together who are the senior people of ferry industries around the world. The operators themselves also need to continue look for new ideas to make their business more efficient and to get through this. According to forecasts 2008 was the peak in orders and 2010 will be the peak in deliveries. But in upcoming 10 years the world will never order such again, as forecasted. What about the ferries? That is true in terms of shipping generally. But not in terms of ferries. It is much more stable. We haven t had the huge peak that container ships, bulk carriers have had in the past five years. It was more steady. The other very interesting point is globally the age of ferry fleet which is quite old. It is not uncommon to find companies with ships average in years old. There is still a great need for replacing these. Over the past 5 years some ferry companies who would normally have been replacing ferries over that period, could not, because of the huge demand from other sectors of shipping like bulk carriers and container ships the prices were gone up very quickly. The orderbooks were delayed, delivery times had extended out and they chose not to replace this time and continue to going on with their older ships. Still there is a need for replacing ferries. Ferry industry is going up and down but it tends to be more steady. It did not experience so huge decreases and rises. Bu genel olarak denizcilik sektörü için do ru. 5 Over the past 5 years some ferry companies who would normally have been replacing ferries over that period, could not, because of the huge demand from other sectors of shipping like bulk carriers and containerships the prices were gone up very quickly. Are there any new developments in terms of technology used in the ferries? Is there any new development attracted your attention in Hong Kong? Anything or any technology that will save fuel, attracts my attention. For example, there is an Australian company called Solar Sailor which is primarily using solar cells for operating ferries. They are small passenger ferries; not very big or not very fast but a quite good technology interesting to watch. Also the new materials such as carbon fiber are important. In terms of fuel one of the very interesting possibilities is using natural gas for propulsion in ferries. I think now there are 5-6 natural gas ferries in Norway and it has interesting possibilities because of the fuel efficiency of natural gas and also due to reduced air emissions since regulations keep getting tighter for air emissions. What do you think about the Turkish shipbuilding and ferry industry s future? I know IDO which has come a long way in a very short time and it has a fantastic future and it is very remarkable to me. The new equipment that is being purchased; the new types of ferries and the variety of ships, they are all very good. IDO buys the best ships and the best technology from wherever it can, it is the fact. This is one of the problems we have in North America, Canada and US. They have some restrictions on where they can purchase the ships. If you operate a ship domestically in US then it has to be completely built in US. This limits them in terms of technology they can use and in terms of the prices they can get. Whereas a company like IDO says where is the best technology around the world, let s go look at it and if that works best for us we will use that. I think high demand on the local shipbuilding industry to come up to that standard too; to be part of that process they need to compete at the highest level. Generally the idea of having a completely open economy in terms of shipbuilding and shipping is the way to have huge advantages for a country. & yasla daha dengeli. Do algaz yak t olarak verimlili i ve ayr ca düflük zararl emisyonlar sayesinde ilginç imkanlar sunuyor. Zararl emisyonlar konusundaki düzenlemeler gün geçtikçe daha da s k lafl yor. Türk gemi infla ve feribot sektörünün gelece i hakk nda neler düflünüyorsunuz? DO çok k sa bir süre içerisinde çok yol aflt ve ola anüstü bir gelece i oldu unu düflünüyorum. Sat n al nan yeni donan mlar, yeni feribot tipleri ve gemi çeflitlerinin tümü çok iyi. DO alabilece i her yerden en iyi gemileri ve en iyi teknolojiyi sat n al yor. Bu bir gerçek. Kuzey Amerika, Kanada ve ABD deki problemlerimizden biri de bu. Gemilerin sat n al naca yerler konusunda baz k s tlamalar söz konusu. E er ABD de bir gemi iflletiyorsan z, tamamen ABD de infla edilmifl bir gemi olmak zorunda. Bu da kullanabilecekleri teknoloji ve alabilecekleri uygun fiyatlar aç s ndan onlar k s tl yor. Di er yandan DO En iyi teknoloji dünyan n neresindeyse gidip görelim ve e er en iyisi ise onu kullan r z diyor. San r m yerli gemi infla sektörü de bu yüksek talep sayesinde bu standarda ulaflacak. Sürecin bir parças olmak için en yüksek düzeyde rekabet etmeleri gerekiyor.
