B orusan Logistics history dates back to 1973, when Boru Nakliyat was established to provide services primarily to sister companies in the Borusan Group. With the aim to offer the experience and know-how acquired for many years in the field of logistics to other companies in Turkey, three companies within the Borusan Group were restructured in 2000 to form Borusan Logistics. As from that date, the company has positioned itself in the market as an integrated logistics service provider. According to the 6 Sigma approach, using number of defects per unit, 3 to 4 failures or defects per million are targeted and it is aimed to eliminate any such negativities. Ibrahim Dolen, Assistant Managing Director of Borusan Logistics said, The 6 Sigma methodology adopted by all companies of the Borusan Group enables us to increase our level of quality, efficiency and customer satisfaction. Our activities are focused on three strategic business units. We provide customer-focused, quality services in the fields of port services, integrated logistics and customs clearance services. We have completed our structuring process to manage all logistics processes from a single point. We provide general cargo, container discharge, loading and warehousing services from a single source at our port facilities in Gemlik. We also provide PCC (Pure Car Carrier) and RO-RO terminal services at our port. We closed the year 2005 with a 31 per cent growth, just as we targeted. Our investments in 2005 focused mainly on increasing our capacities in our warehousing and domestic transportation business units. We have increased our service capacity in a covered area of 30,000 m 2 under one roof at our bonded and non-bonded warehousing facilities opened in Tuzla region in Istanbul. In addition to our physical investments, we further strengthened our IT infrastructure to be able to meet the ever changing customer requirements. We started to support all operations, movements and processes within the scope of our field of activity with the most efficient software. Total cost of all these investments was around 9 million dollars. We expect that our investments in new warehouses and motor vehicle fleet will further reinforce our growth impetus in 2006. The growing foreign trade volume of Turkey increases the need for warehousing both raw materials and end products. We have put forth great efforts to increase the capacity of our warehousing services in line with this change in the market and demands of our customers for the last two years. Additionally, we plan to commence a new investment in our port in Gemlik, Bursa this year. With this investment, we aim to make up for any possible future deficiencies in supply in the Gemlik region and to respond to our customers needs more rapidly and with high efficiency. What is logistics in Turkey? What are your views about the sector? The concept of logistics dates back to antiquity. Today, logistics services are considered as ensuring the coordination among all sub-functions required by the process from provision of raw materials to consumption of the end product, and management of the process from a single point and with less cost. The dynamism created in all sectors by the economic recovery in recent years has created a considerable potential for growth. Rapid modernization of the sector and the fact that the concept of transporter is replaced by modern integrated service provider play an important role in exploitation of this potential. Important roles fall upon the establishments that strengthen their infrastructure with new investments and keep up with the international developments. We are one of the establishments that aim to pioneer the development of the sector in that respect. We believe the Traffic Law that will come into force and regulations to be introduced in connection with it would contribute to the overall quality of the sector. Our economy that has demonstrated considerable growth particularly after 2001 crisis allowed the companies prepared for change in the logistics sector to achieve growth rates far beyond their overall growth rates. We anticipate that this growth trend of our sector would continue with the increasing foreign trade. The logistics sector should also get specialized and develop parallel to the growth achieved. In an attempt to provide support to the sector in this field, we sponsored the seventh Logistics Management Summit last year. The summit that brings together 060

In what respects? Our current customer portfolio includes almost all automotive, durable consumer goods and steel-iron companies in Turkey, particularly major companies in the high technology, chemical and fast-moving consumer goods sectors. All our customers are indispensable for us. Our aim is to grow by meeting the customers needs with the most efficient and appropriate solutions. What countries fall within your field of activities the most? As Borusan Logistics, we have aimed to operate over an area covering Turkey and the neighboring countries. We currently provide services in Zaho-Iraq and in Ukraine. We will focus our activities on one more country this year and increase our efficiency within close geography. What are your views about the development of port business in Turkey? What are your expectations with respect to the future? Our ports are among the principal factors that would enable our country to become the logistics hub in its geographical area. However, unfortunately, we are unable to exploit the potential of our ports today. Another requirement of becoming a logistics hub is the regulation of the legislation relating to ports, particularly the customs legislation that applies to transit cargoes. Currently, the red-tape and consequently the delays in transit cargoes are a deterrent factor for the owners of the cargoes. The fact that the ports do not have adequate road and railway connections is another important problem. The transportation systems should be interconnected so that the logistics activities can be handled in a satisfactory way. New investments should be made to establish road and railway connections to ports. The Bonded Warehouse is located 1.5 km from the motorway, 8 km from the Mersin Free Zone, and 10 km from the Mersin Port. With our bonded warehouse, we will meet the requirements of our customers in Mersin, an important crossing point in regional and international trade, in the best way. I believe that ports in Turkey would be able to meet the trade volume that increases with a great impetus. Do you plan to remain a general purpose port or become specialized in the long-term? As Borusan Logistics, we are active in all main service areas in our port in Gemlik. We do our best to fulfill our responsibilities imposed on us by our hinterland in the fields of container, general cargo and automotive. The speed, service quality, and efficiency we provide in all our services actually give our port the status of a ports specialized in all these three fields. We aim to achieve an increase in all three fields with the investments we will make in the long term. What are your opinions about the privatization of the ports? I consider privatization as a step necessary to be taken for solving the problems of the ports. On condition that required infrastructure investments (e.g. railway and road connections, etc.) are made, the government should open new ports with the revenues to be obtained from these privatizations and then privatize the operation of the same. It is highly important to act in a planned manner in such strategic areas like ports. We believe that it would be highly beneficial for the country if companies with sufficient port management experience obtain the contract for the tenders held for privatization to eliminate the congestion and increase efficiency at state ports. I believe that the less the state s share in economic production and life, the higher the country s competitive power. The concept was developed by Motorola Inc. as a common measurement unit to define the level of quality of all working groups regardless of their field of activity, whether production or service.
