A. THE PURPOSE OF THE INTERNSHIP To provide the development of the learning outcomes of the internship courses, to lay the groundwork for the courses students are going to take in the following semesters, to introduce the students to the environment of the industry and the institutions related to their educations, with the accumulation of knowledge in the courses given in the related undergraduate program. The philosophical core of the internship is the detailed observation of the system as a whole, along with the components of the system and the interrelation between them, without adhering to a single unit. The objective here should be the extensive analysis of the tasks done in the institution of one's internship. Thus when it is going to be decided where they will be doing their internship, meeting the education output of the internship courses in their departments should be taken note of. Furthermore, in doing the aforementioned internship, students will be experiencing the institution/corporation-administration-employee relationships and interactions. B. THE DEFINITION, DATE, AND DURATION OF THE INTERNSHIP B.1. The internship is a vital part of the preparation process for the business life in public and private sectors for the students of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences. B.2. For the undergraduate students, in order to be eligible for bachelor's degree, they are required to complete 40 days compulsory internship in related commercial and industrial corporations, research institutions and corporations in the service industry. B.3. The first internship can be applied in the summer period following the 2 nd year. The internship should be done in two separate periods, each consisting of at least 20 continuous working days. Internship should start after the final exams and should be completed before the lectures start as announced in the academic calender. Similarly, for the students attending the summer school, the internship period should not conflict with summer school dates (including final exams). B.4. Departmental Internship Committees decide whether the internships can be done or not during the winter break, on the condition that the minimum duration of working days to complete the internship can be found in the related break period. Internship should not conflict with the final exams. B.5. Students can do only one of their internships in the related faculties of the university by the decree of Departmental Internship Committee. Departmental Committee determines the discipline-specific principles for this application and announces them on the department web pages.i n this case; the Department informs the Dean of the Faculty about the responsible academician of the control of the internship and the workplace safety.
C. INTERNSHIP COMMITTEE C.1. Each department with an undergraduate program and compulsory internship requirement should have a Departmental Internship Committee. The Departmental Internship Committee consists of a chairman and 2 members. Head of Departmental Internship Committee is run by the Head of Department or an academic member. If an academic member other than the Head of Department is tasked as Head of Departmental Internship Committee, it must be reported to the Dean s Office. C.2. In each academic year at November/December, Departmental Internship Committee gives a briefing to students about internship. D. PROCEDURE OF INTERNSHIP D.1. Students, who would like to do a compulsory (domestic or international)/voluntary internship, should fill the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences Internship Form given in Appendix-1. Students are resposible for finding the institution/corporation for themselves and they should apply to their Deparmental Internship Committee with the Internship Form. The approval of the Head of the Department and Dean s Office should be taken. D.2. Students need to take the form to the related institution/corporation and take the approval of the authorized person. Next, this form should be approved by the Head of the Department and then this approved form, along with a copy of the Natioan ldentity Card, should be submitted to the Faculty Secretariat for compulsory internships, and to the Career Center for voluntary internships. D.3. Students may also do their compulsory internships abroad on condition that their regular academic program will not be affected. All the responsibilities belong to students when the internship is done abroad. Acceptance forms of international internships are evaluated by Departmental Internship Committee and the Committee decides on whether the internship can be done abroad or not. D.4. Students, apart from compulsory internships, may do voluntary internship in an institution/corporation, on condition that the regular academic program will not be affected. D.5. Students need to print out the Training Diary (given in Appendix-2) and take it to the internship site with them. All the pages of the Training Diary must be signed and stamped by the authorized person in the institution/corporation. D.6. After students complete their compulsory internship, they must deliver the Training Diary, the Internship Report (the cover page of the internship report is given in Appendix 3), the Intern Evaluation Form (given in Appendix-4) and the Internship Place Evaluation Form (given in Appendix-5) to the Faculty Secretariat until the end of the add / drop period mentioned in the academic calendar. The Intern Evaluation Form should be delivered in a sealed envelope containing the custody of the institution/ corporation, filled in and approved by the authorized person in the institution/corporation. Training Diary, Internship Report and Intern Evaluation Form are not required in voluntary internships. D.7. Students completing their internship must register for one of their courses (200/300) in the semester following the completion of the internship.
E. TRAINING DIARY AND INTERNSHIP REPORT GUIDELINES E.1. The daily records of the training diary should be written at the internship place every day and the daily work should be summarized in maximum three sentences. At the end of each week, the relevant page should be signed and stamped by the authorized person in the institution/corporation. The training diary can be prepared either in Turkish or in English. E.2. The internship report should be prepared in English. The Internship Report is a report containing the specific work and/or drawings required to be done by the students in the internship. The report should include the answers to the questions given in Section G. E.3. The Internship Report must be written in electronic format (e.g. MS Word). The paper size must be A4. Times New Roman fonts with a font size of 12 points and 1½ line spacing should be used. E.4. The language used in the Internship Report must be chosen correctly; titles,sections,subsections and paragraph indents must be standard and in particular, attention must be paid to spelling and punctuation. E.5. Unnecessary information and documents must not be included in the Internship Report, while all the necessary information must be cited with reference numbers, which will be listed in the Appendices section. The appendices must not exceed 5 pages. F. EVALUATION OF TRAINING DIARY and INTERNSHIP REPORT Acceptance of the internship as successful depends primarily on the following conditions: F.1. Training Diaries and Reports that are not prepared according to the Internship Training Diary and Report Guidelines (given in Section E) will not be taken into consideration. Template, organization and the other context of the report are taken into account in the evaluation. Departmental Internship Commission may request from students to rewrite some sections. F.2. The Training Diary, Internship Report and Intern Evaluation Form will not be evaluated unless they are delivered on time (until the end of the course add / drop period). The student is responsible for the delivery of the related forms on time. If the required forms are not delivered on time, the student will be evaluated as unsuccessful for the internship. F.3. The evaluation of the internship courses at the end of the year is carried out in two categories as Pass-P or Fail-F. F.4. Students evaluated as failed must repeat the related internship. Graduation and exit process of students, who do not accomplish the internships, will not be carried out.
G. QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED IN THE REPORT Internship Report must include detailed answers to the questions given below. Other questions are prepared by the related academic department and released to the students via web sites, e-mail etc. QUESTION 1) Give information about the institution in which the internship is performed. (Up to 2 pages): a) Complete (Full) Name and Address b) A Brief History of the Development c) If any, Parent organization d) Existing facilities e)the numbers and classifications of employees. (worker, technician, engineer, administrative personel etc.) QUESTION 2) Give information about the hardware and software you used during your internship. QUESTION 3) Describe the duties assigned to you by the institution / corporation. Did you participate in a project? If so, provide a detailed description of the project and give some information about the teams you work with. QUESTION 4) Indicate any special situations, problems and solutions you have encountered during your internship. QUESTION 5) Give information about the professional skills and achievements you have gained at the end of the internship. QUESTION 6) Do the overall assessment of your internship.
