Poor but determined, Medine puts the family to work cutting branches to earn something towards the price of the sheep they need. Ismail, Medine s unemployed husband, is worried by his wife s assertive behaviour. Envious of the attention Mert gets, his elder sister, Vicdan, makes Mert believe that if a sheep isn t found, he will be slaughtered instead. A singer-prostitute arrives in town. The village leader finds Ismail a job at the slaughterhouse. Friends there lead Ismail astray, and his weakness makes it even harder to buy the sheep. Medine persists. Mert has his own motivation to search for an animal, with a determination that rivals his mother s. Refusing even her grandmother s support, Medine receives help and solidarity from an unlikely source. Kutluğ Ataman (Istanbul, 1961) won rapid acclaim and awards for his first feature, Serpent s Tale. Lola+Bilidikid opened the Panorama section of the 49th Berlinale, won the Best Film award at New York s The New Festival and the Jury Special Prize in Berlin. 2 Girls confirmed his position in the top rank of Turkish filmmakers, national and international prizes. Journey to the Moon is a full-length film which, in its installation version, forms part of Ataman s artwork series, Mesopotamian Dramaturgies. Screened at festivals including Istanbul and London, it was shown on the occasion of Ataman s appointment as laureate of the 2011 Routes Award. Being subordinate to Ali and sharing a rundown room with Mehmet are not what he expected of life. His only comfort is an older woman, Denise, a foreign botanist who works at the local research centre. They meet secretly in a cottage by the sea and make love to the crashing of the waves. Denise is suspicious of Hamit but asks no questions, and Hamit doesn t tell much anyway. But the sea is unforgiving and pressure builds as a new group of refugees arrive and are unable to leave the village. Their relationship is buffeted like plants in the harsh coastal wind. And then, one a stormy night, Hamit decides to change his destiny. Melisa Önel (Izmir, 1980) completed her Master s degree in Film Studies at Istanbul Bilgi University after studying International Relations at Tufts University. A filmmaker and photographer, Önel is a member of the photographers initiative, RecCollective. In the past two years, her work has been shown at many international exhibitions. Her first short film, Omega Fox (2007), was selected for the Hisar Short Film Festival, a collection of the 10 best short films of the year in Turkey. Her mediumlength documentary, Me and Nuri Bala (2009), won Best First Documentary award at the 46 th Antalya Film Festival. The circumscribed life he has built himself comes to an end during a hypnotherapy session, which releases him from the aquarium where he is stuck into the freedom of the sea. At the end of their lives, their memories are erased and replaced with new ones. These new memories are tweaked so that everybody remembers themselves as if they have always been living as that character. This leaves him with no choice but to live with fragments of memory belonging to other people. Tayfun Pirselimoğlu (Trabzon, 1959) studied painting and engraving at the University for Applied Arts in Vienna after graduating from the Middle East Technical University in Ankara. He has held exhibitions all around the world. He is a co-founder of the independent art initiative, Akademie Genius, for which he lectured on screenwriting, cinema and painting. He has written four novels and two short story collections. He began his film career as a screenwriter, writing scripts for both shorts and features. In 2002 he shot his first feature film, Innowhereland, which received many awards. Tevfik, a retired bank employee (70), leads a moderate life with his wife, Neriman (60), and two sons, Selim (40) and Zafer (25), in Bakırköy, Istanbul. Selim s disabilities have dominated the household for years and the family has abandoned Neriman to face these challenges alone. Selim s disabilities arise from his severe mental retardation: his perception is slow, and though he recognizes family members and adores them, he can t express himself in any way. He s entirely dependent on his caretaker. Here lies Neriman s biggest fear in life: she can t help but worry what would become of Selim if something were to happen to them. This was the reason for having a second child, Zafer. Zafer s scorn for his family is also rooted in this: constantly overshadowed by his older brother s condition, Zafer is unable to assert himself. On the other hand, Zafer s fiance, Hale, clings to him with hopes of moving to Canada to distance herself from her mother.
