PH.D. QUALIFIER EXAMINATIONS POLICIES AND PROCEDURES CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR MEDICINE PH.D. PROGRAM Updated: 19/12/2017 I. Candidates for the Ph.D. degree from the Cellular and Molecular Medicine (CAMM) Program must pass their qualifier examination by their fifth semester at Koç University if they have a master of science or MD degree; or seventh semester if they are starting PhD directly after receiving their bachelors degree. II. III. IV. Candidates must have completed their course work and the credit requirements before taking the qualifier examination, as per Turkish Council of Higher Education (YÖK) guidelines. Candidates will, as per YÖK guidelines, be provided with a written and oral examination, taken on separate days, both of which must be passed in order to continue within the program. The examinations will test the depth and breadth of knowledge of each candidate, along with their aptitude for analytical thinking. V. The specific format of the written and oral examinations is decided by the steering examination committee (Yeterlilik Sınav Komitesi) of the CAMM program according to discussions and suggestions by the program faculty. VI. The steering examination committee (Yeterlilik Sınav Komitesi) for the CAMM program includes the following faculty members: Prof. Dr. Mehmet Kaya, School of Medicine Yrd. Doç. The steering examination committee (Yeterlilik Sınav Komitesi) will form juries (Yeterlilik Sınav Jürisi) for each candidate s qualifier exams. As per YÖK guidelines, this jury will consist of five faculties, which will include the candidate s advisor, two faculties from the graduate program, and two outside faculties from other universities. This jury should be formed with the guidance of candidate s advisor. After deciding on the names of the jury members, the candidate s advisor should fill the qualifier exam jury assignment form (Yeterlilik Jüri Atama formu, EK 1) and submit it to GSHS office. This form should be submitted at least 1 month prior to the written exam date. The written examination will be in essay format. Questions will be prepared by the selected juries for each candidate. Questions should be sent to and compiled by the GSHS office and approved by the steering committee. As CAMM is a broad program, the candidates will be examined for their knowledge on general topics within the realm of cellular and molecular medicine. In addition, they will be tested for their knowledge on specific topics on one of the following study areas (tracks)*: 1) molecular and cellular biology 2) microbiology 1
3) biochemistry 4) physiology and biophysics 5) pharmacology 6) genetics 7) immunology 8) developmental biology Note: These tracks are chosen at the beginning of the candidates PhD study. X. The written exam will take 3 hours and will be taken by all of the candidates in the same room at the same time. XI. Suggested textbooks include, but are not limited to: Molecular and Cellular Biology: Alberts et al., Molecular Biology of the Cell Additional textbooks will be suggested by the candidates advisors according to their study areas. XII. XIII. XIV. XV. XVI. The written exam will be graded by the subcommittee; and the candidates will be notified of their grades in 7 days. A passing grade of 60% must be obtained on the written examination in order to take the oral examination. The oral portion of the examination will take place within 3 weeks after the written exam. The oral exam will proceed as follows: The candidate will be asked questions based on the fundamentals of his/her research description in addition to general subject matters. No faculty or students beyond those on the subcommittee will be present during the examination. Each examiner will question the candidate with no interruption from any other faculty member, and all faculty members of the jury will observe questioning by the other faculty members. The oral exam will take 1-1.5 hour. All examinations, without exception, will take place in the English language. Following questioning by each individual faculty, 15 minutes of free discussion and follow-up questioning will commence. Finally, the candidate will leave the room, and the jury will decide by majority decision whether the candidate has passed their qualifier examination. XVII. If the student fails, he/she should take the exam next semester. The student must pass the examination in his/her second trial. Note that there will be no third chance for the exam. XVIII. Exams are given twice a year, once in every semester. The date of the next Ph.D. qualifier examination Written part: 3 rd week of March 2018 (14th of March 2018) Oral part: 1 st week of April 2018 (4th of April 2018). XX. The jury and the steering committee must sign the necessary paperwork (Yeterlilik Sınav Jürisi Tutanağı ve Yeterlilik Sınav Komitesi Tutanağı, EK 2 ve EK 3). These forms should be submitted to GSHS office within 1 week after the examination. 2
XXI. Once a student passes the Ph.D. qualifier examination, a thesis progress committee (Tez İzleme Komitesi) (EK 4) will be formed within 1 month, and the student will write a thesis proposal. More details on thesis proposal and progress monitoring will be provided to those students who pass the qualifier exam in separate documents. 3
