It is also reported that a Japanese shipbuilder received an extra US$ 4 million from a shipowner for a 28 thousand DWT vessel, which had been ordered by the end of 2002 at a price of US$ 16 million. Named Safe Effective Deactivation of Non- Indigenous Aliens (SEDNA), this new system will be installed inside the vessels and occupy a small space. SEDNA comprises of hydro-cyclones for sediment removal, a self-cleaning 50 micrometer filter for the effective removal of a wide range of organisms, and a dosing station for the fully biodegradable oxidant for and effective inactivation of all remaining organisms. The system has been proven to conform to the D2 treatment standard of IMO s Ballast Water Convention as a result of tests that lasted more than 2000 hours. Demolition of the boathouse and training facilities of the MSC that has served the sport of sailing in Turkey for 47 years was met with a strong reaction from the sailing and yachting world in the country and the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality was protested with full-page ads placed in newspapers. It was stated in a statement made by Kadir Topbafl, Mayor of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, that the place in question was registered as a public garden and filled land in the plan, and that therefore the facilities located in that place were demolished because that meant they had been built without permit. Mayor Topbafl further stated that they would make necessary modifications in the plan to register the land as a water sports center. Following the statement of Mayor Topbafl, MSC also made a statement and pointed out to the fact was a result of an unfortunate misunderstanding. Stating they would meet Mayor Topbafl and discuss the issue, club s directors also added that Kadikoy Mayor Selami Öztürk had promised that the facilities would be rebuilt in the shortest possible time.
