X Bachelor Master (No Thesis) Master (Thesis) PhD Catalog Information Program Description The Undergraduate Program of International Relations prepares students to understand and contribute to a dynamic world. It is designed to equip our students with the knowledge and applicable skills that will serve them and their communities. As a Department we also strive to contribute to the wider academic community through original research and publication. Graduates of International Relations find career opportunities in both the public and private sectors. Several of our graduates have found employment in the diplomatic services of their home countries. Many have entered other areas of the public services. Indeed, among our master program graduates are notables including the President of the T.R.N.C., and a T.R.N.C. Supreme Court Justice. Other graduates now also work as diplomats and others for international organizations and the NGO sector. There is no shortage of job opportunities in the private sector, either. Our graduates have found employment in media, communications and banking. Some of our graduates, in pursuit of academic careers, have enrolled in and graduated from M.A. and Ph.D. programs in prestigious universities including Cambridge and Cornell. Through January 2004, the department graduated 914 students, including 863 undergraduate students and 51 graduate students. There are 400 undergraduates and over 30 graduates currently enrolled in the program. The Undergraduate Program of International Relations offers Student Assistantships to those graduate students who show distinction in their course work and are considered efficient at teamwork, and the Department confers internationally accredited Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Master of Arts (MA) degrees. Undergraduates follow a general education curriculum concerned with sociology, economics and other humanities courses. Junior and Senior level courses build on this foundation to enable students think theoretically and practically about world politics. The Program offers an interdisciplinary approach to the subject of International Relations. The curriculum includes a wide spectrum of courses including international relations theory, international political economy, international law, international security, foreign policy analysis, and area studies. A particular emphasis of our programs is placed on the post-cold War transformation of the world system. Globalization, supranational integration and disintegration are common themes, which form the basis of the contemporary debate on world politics. Equipped with this background, our graduates are well placed to contribute to the public and private sectors, as well as academically for graduate and post-graduate level studies and research. We include many elective courses on the European Union and the Middle East. Our geographic location offers insight into the processes of continuity and change in these two important regions of the world. In conjunction with the Cyprus Policy Center located on the campus, students can benefit from interaction with renowned scholars and attend international conferences. Even though most of the students enrolled in the Program are from Turkey and Northern Cyprus, a significant number of students also come from almost all parts of the world including a number of countries from Eastern and Central Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Russia and Central Asia. The diverse backgrounds of our students contribute to the program through intercultural exchange. INTL310 Politics of Development Central to this course is the question what the conditions of successful economic development are. It focuses on political institutions and development policies in the process of late-industrialization and analyzes divergent paths of modernization. The course will place a strong emphasis on the changing international contexts of development, and chart the transformation of development paradigms and strategies within these contexts. Particular attention will be given to the export-orient reorientation of development strategies of the last two decades. INTL403 Politics of Cyprus During the first half of the semester, we examine the major milestones in the Cyprus Conflict with a special emphasis on the process of the Cyprus negotiations. After a brief introduction of the historical background of the Cyprus Conflict, we focus on the major actors interests and positions on the fundamental issues of the Cyprus negotiations in critical milestones such as the 1977 and 1979 High Level agreements, the Set of Ideas (1992) and the Annan Plan (2002-2004). During the second half of the semester, the students, under the supervision of the course instructor, prepare a presentation for the class and a final term paper on an important aspect of the Cyprus Conflict.
