The Second International Congress on the History of Money and Numismatics in the Mediterranean World organised by the Suna & İnan Kıraç Research Center for Mediterranean Civilizations of Koç University will be held at the Center s facilities in Antalya on 5-8 January 2017. The aim of the Congress is to bring together the leading scholars working on the monetary history and numismatics of the Mediterranean world in order to share the results of their original research, to draw attention to the cultural and economic variety observed across the Mediterranean from the Lydians to the Islamic states, and to contribute to the scientific studies in the field. Within this frame, the scope of the papers to be delivered will focus on the emergence of the concept of money and monetary and economic history of Mediterranean cultures from the earliest coinage to the end of the Byzantine period as well as coinage struck or circulated within this geographical region. Also to be discussed are commercial weights, which were among the most important public instruments alongside coins for running the market economy and value assessment. Koç Üniversitesi Suna & İnan Kıraç Akdeniz Medeniyetleri Araştırma Merkezi (AKMED) tarafından organize edilen İkinci Uluslararası Para Tarihi ve Numismatik Kongresi, 5-8 Ocak 2017 tarihlerinde Antalya daki merkez binasında toplanacaktır. Coğrafi kapsamının Akdeniz coğrafyasıyla sınırlı tutulacağı bu Kongrenin amacı, Akdeniz Dünyası na ilişkin para tarihi ve numismatik konularında çalışan değerli bilim insanlarının bir araya getirilerek özgün araştırma sonuçlarının paylaşılması, Lidyalılardan İslam devletlerine Akdeniz de şekillenen kültürel ve ekonomik çeşitliliğe dikkat çekilmesi ve bu alana bilimsel bir katkı sağlanmasıdır. Bu çerçevede, Kongrede sunulacak bildirilerin konularını, para kavramının ortaya çıkışı ve en erken sikkelerden başlayarak Bizans Dönemi nin sonuna kadar Akdeniz e damgasını vurmuş kültürlerin para ve ekonomi tarihinin yanı sıra bu coğrafyada üretilmiş veya dolaşım görmüş sikkeler ile pazar ekonomisinin işlemesinde ve değer belirlemede en önemli kamusal araçlardan biri olan ticari ağırlıklar oluşturacaktır. Each paper is limited to 20 minutes and must be presented in English only. Simultaneous translation, however, will NOT be provided. The handover of PowerPoint presentation files with their checks and return will be handled at the delegate preparation room, which is open 4 7 January from 8.30 am to 6.00 pm. Publication of the Proceedings In order to publish the papers as soon as possible, the delegates are requested to provide a copy of their manuscripts to AKMED either during the Congress or by 1 March 2017. Each manuscript is to be prepared in accordance with AKMED s publishing guidelines (see www.akmedadalya.com/yayin_en.php). Travel The travel expenses of the participants presenting a paper at the Congress will be covered by AKMED. Transfers will be done by SETUR from the airport or inter-city bus terminal to the hotel (to be announced). Accommodation Delegates presenting a paper at the Congress will be hosted gratis by AKMED in the conference hotel on a bed and breakfast basis beginning 4 January 2017 in a room reserved in their name by SETUR. Lunches are arranged by AKMED during the Congress. Dinners are on the participants' own. Since the last day of the Congress is Sunday, 8 January, guests need to vacate their rooms by noon Monday, 9 January. Delegates who would like to extend their stay in Antalya at their own expense need to contact SETUR to make an additional reservation. About Us The Suna & İnan Kıraç Research Institute on Mediterranean Civilizations was founded as a private academic institution in 1996 within the Vehbi Koç Foundation. As of 1 January 2016, it became the Suna & İnan Kıraç Research Center for Mediterranean Civilizations of Koç University. The Center continues to encourage and support research to study, document, protect and present the historical, archaeological, anthropological and relevant humanities as well as fields such as art, architecture and cultural heritage concerning, above all, Anatolia s Mediterranean areas as well as the wider Mediterranean world. The Center supports archaeological excavations and surveys in the region, provides grants to master s and doctoral students, organises national and international academic congresses and events, and publishes monographs and journals. In addition, its growing library and archives are available to scholars for research purposes. The Kaleiçi Museum of the Center contributes to the cultural and touristic activities of Antalya with its authentic architecture and unique displays that present scenes from nineteenth-century life in Antalya s old city.
