CONTAINER TRANSPORTATION INCREASES KONTEYNER TAfiIMACILI I ARTIYOR Dünyada birçok liman, artan kargo hacmine yönelik kapasite problemleri yafl yor ve kapasite artt r m na gidiyor. Many ports in the world experience capacity problems against the increasing cargo volumes and make investments to increase their capacity. This problem is tried to overcome with new terminals. Certainly, apart from capacity increases, there are also ports that find opportunities for alternative investments and to expand their service range. We had an interview with Galip Kendigelen, General Manager of Mardeniz, Kardeniz, Mardas Group of Companies, about Mardas and port business in Turkey. T uzla tersanelerinin yeni infla gereksinmelerine yeterince yan t verememesi nedeniyle, Yalova Alt nova bölgesindeki yeni tahsis tersane alan nda iki adet ve toplam 80,000 m 2 alana sahibiz. Yeni siparifl- Kapt. Galip Kendigelen lerimizin 2009 ile You have a new shipyard investment. Could you please give us brief information about this investment? D ue to the fact that the shipyards in Tuzla fail to meet the newbuilding demand adequately, we acquired two lands covering total of 80,000 square meters area at the newly allocated shipyard zone in Altinova, Yalova region. Furthermore, we also purchased 32,000 square meters of land in the industrially zoned area just behind these areas. We are currently working on the layout and production plans in cooperation with the Japanese shipyard consultants, and the constructions are scheduled to begin in 2008. We plan to complete the shipyard constructions within 2 years and to begin limited production as from the last 6 months of the construction calendar. Our goal is to build supramax and postpanamax vessels, i.e. 56-58,000 dwt and 82,000 dwt dry cargo vessels. The production model to be applied at our shipyard will be like that of the Far Eastern shipyards, particularly of the Japanese shipyards. We adopt the model of serial production by concentrating on a specific design and a ship type and with the application of the rules that change in due course of time. Do you aim to become specialized in certain types of vessels? What is the current situation of order in newbuildings? Currently we have 11 newbuilding order contracts, all of which are with the Japanese shipyards. These are five 56,000 dwt, three 58,000 dwt, three 82,100 dwt vessels, and they are expected to be added to our fleet between 2009 and 2012. Our primary strategy is to continue these investments until 2020 and increase the number of ships in our fleet to around 25 and our total tonnage to 1.5-2 million dwt. But certainly, the determining factor behind all these expected developments are related to the developments in the world trade and shipping. 052

2012 y llar aras nda gemi filomuza kat lmalar n bekliyoruz. Bu an- On the other hand, with the assumption that involving in more than one type of shipping would create difficulties, we intend not to invest in any vessel types other than dry cargo, in which we think we have got specialized. Do you have contacts in other countries? Since 2004, we have conducted observations and researches at shipyards in Far Eastern countries like China, Vietnam, Philippines, Korea and Japan with various reasons. We decided to make our investments in Japan, which we consider more reliable in terms of quality, timing, and design. However, we have succeeded to overcome the difficulties of being accepted as an investor in Japan in 2 years at a time when almost all shipyards in the world experience abundance in orders. As it is known, the Japanese shipyards give priority to 1- Japanese owners who are their old customers, 2- Japanese owners, 3- Old customers of European origin that are defined first-class, and 4- First-class European owners respectively. We, as a Turkish shipping company, have tried to overcome the difficulties of securing a place in this order. In general, companies with steel and iron plants have shipyard plans. What are your opinions in this matter? Almost all companies with an iron and steel plant begin to feel the need to open to ports, to establish port facilities arising from necessities, and then to make investments in vessels because they pay big freight charges in the course of time. This ends up with establishment of their own shipyards. These are the investments that become inevitable due to importation of iron and steel. How do you see the current Turkish shipbuilding industry? Saying that the Turkish shipbuilding industry ranks 7 th or 8 th in the world in general would be deceptive, even though it sounds favorable. In the present sense, there are around 340 million dwt on order at world shipyards. The situation would look different with the information that China accounts for approximately 150 million dwt, Korea for 100, and Japan for 90 million dwt, and that the total orders in the order books of the Turkish yards is only around 3 million dwt. On the other hand, we also know that the total capacity of vessels flying the Turkish flag in the Turkish merchant marine fleet is around 7.5 or 8 million dwt, and that the total capacity increases to only 12-14 million dwt when we also add the vessels owned by Turkey owners but flying foreign flags. The total capacity of Greece s merchant marine is around 180 million dwt. The newbuilding orders of the Turkish companies have reached 15.8 million dwt. Again when we compare it with our close neighbour Greece, the newbuilding investments of the Greek companies are around 59 million dwt. The Turkish Merchant Marine fleet ranks 8 th or 9 th in the world. Although these figures are not so pessimistic, it would be more accurate and appropriate to say that the Turkish maritime industry would rank higher with continuous development and sensitivity of the public authorities relating to the maritime industry in following and execution of the international rules, as well as with the existence and increasing number of shipping companies that rapidly restructure and try to base their business mentality on modern and current requirements. 054
Yine yak n komflumuz Yunanistan ile k yaslad m zda Yunan firmalar na ait yeni infla yat r mlar n 59 milyon dwt oldu unu görüyoruz. How would the maritime industry and the markets be affected by the political developments? Even though shipping is an international business and it would not be correct to assume that it is connected with political developments, it is possible to say that it would be positively affected by any political stability, just like any other industry. Do the recent political developments affect you? It is a fact that the current conditions in one way or another affect everyone who loves their country. Perhaps, even though there might be an ignorable decrease in cargo operations at the Turkish ports at the most, I believe that the economy and dynamism, as well as the total power of our country, are sufficient to overcome such things. And I also believe that it would be beneficial if all elements existing in any point of the economy have high morale and abstain from panic. Does the container transportation have a more active period? We can say that the average annual growth in the world economy is around 2.4-2.5 per cent, and that, in economic cargo transportation and movements, shipping secures far more share in this overall growth rate. On the other hand, increasing goods movements by sea and shifting to container transportation, the container transportation activities gradually gain momentum. Could you please provide us with information about the capacity of the Mardas Port and the cargoes handled at the port? Mardas was established as an iron and steel logistics port between the years 1991 and 1992. However, the developments in Turkey, increasing demand and the current conditions have all acted to change the structure of the port in a way not related with our skills. The iron and steel port has transformed into a container port in the course of time. When the current conditions are considered, the Mardas Port has transformed into a terminal that handles 285-290 thousand containers and 1.5 million tons 056
Geçmifl senelerde Marmara bölgesinde sat lan birkaç limana talip olmam za ra men sonuçland ramad k. Ancak Türkiye nin genel gidifline bak ld nda konteyner potansiyeli her y l %20 art fl e ilimi gösteriyor. Anadolu yakas nda, konteyof dry cargoes according to 2007 data. When we look back to the year 2000, it was a port that handled 3.5 million tons of dry cargo and approximately 20 thousand containers. There is a rapid increase in container output between 2000 and 2007, while on the other hand there is a decrease in dry cargo output. As for the next year, we estimate that we will handle approximately 400 thousand containers as a result of the new contracts and capacity increases. The purpose of establishment of your port was to provide services mainly to your group, but then you began to provide services to others as well. Currently, 80-85 per cent of our services are provided to other establishments. As from the next year, our services to our own group will be around 10%. Can the port experience a capacity problem? Do you have any new plans? Even though we submitted bids for several ports sold in Marmara region in the last few years, we were unable to conclude them. We can achieve a 20 per cent capacity increase every year at Mardas port with continuous investments. However, our goal for an investment in a state-of-the-art port equipped with modern technologies in the Marmara region still continues. What are your short-term goals? We aim to become a specialized container port and continue the same system at ports we will acquire. The new ports we will acquire should be convenient for container flow. What is the situation of competition in port business in Turkey? Absolutely, the conditions of competition are more intense compared to the past. But, when we consider the overall progress of Turkey, the container potentials have a 20% increasing trend every year. There are 7 ports that have begun to become container ports in the Anatolian side. Even though there would be an instant intense competition, 50-51 per cent of the containers in Turkey are handled in the Marmara Region. It looks that the capacities of these ports would become hard to be adequate in the course of time. Unless there are far more state-of-the-art port facilities, I believe that there is a lace for everyone in the existing competition environment. What kind of a picture emerges if you compare the Turkish ports with the others in the world? Frankly speaking, it is possible to say that the Turkish ports are rather underdeveloped when compared with the world ports in terms of layout Dünya tersanelerinde 340 milyon dwt kadar bir siparifl söz konusu. There are around 340 million dwt on order at world shipyards. China accounts for approximately 150 million dwt, Korea for 100, and Japan for 90 million dwt. MARINE & COMMERCE NOVEMBER 2007 057
With a simple approach, even when we have a look at the international container magazines, we can see that many African and Far Eastern ports are more developed in this sense. With this determination about the port layouts and equipment, the problems relating to railways and convenient land routes to ports are clear. Are there any ports you, as the company, take as an example? If we find the chance to establish convenient port facilities, I would like to establish ports similar to those established or operated by establishments such as Hutchison Group, Dubai Port and PSA. Can we get information about the vessels in your fleet? Currently, we have total of 7 vessels in our fleet. 5 of them are overaged vessels, and 2 are super handymaxes built in 2003 and 2004. The same problem with almost all Turkish fleet also applies for our fleet: gradually aging fleet. All our investments are related to maritime industry and we desire to maintain and expand our fleet. Once our own shipyard begins production, we will build new vessels for our own fleet. We are trying to act with correct strategies and make our investments in a timely and appropriate manner. On the other hand, the reason why we are in this industry is not a temporary enthusiasm inspired by the favorable market conditions. We consider it an honor and duty to be inside and in the forefront of a variety of goals ranging from serving the Turkish maritime industry, growing in the international sense, increasing the number and tonnages of the Turkish flagged vessels, as well as elevating the operating standards. What can you say about your tourism investments? In recent periods, we have invested and are investing around 700 millions of dollars. Even though we are not so experienced in it, these investments also contain tourism investments. The Susesi Hotel, which was opened in Belek in September and has received great interest from the public even though it is a new facility, is an investment belonging to the Mardas Group. Meanwhile, as a group of companies that has made investments in almost all sectors of the maritime industry and added to these the tourism investments as well, our operations aimed at gathering all our Mardas companies under the roof of a holding are still underway. & 058
