In an exciting final over 48 boards the Dutchies beat Team Angelini by 93 to 72. Highly competitive bridge and friendly Turkish atmosphere proved to be a wonderful combination. And of course we would like to express our special gratitude towards the players who succeeded to get the most out of almost every hand. Alltogether it was great fun being here and to produce the bulletins. Hope to see you again next year at the 10th EC Cup which we very much hope will be held in Iceland. 3 page 3 - EC Cup Izmir - Bulletin o. 5 HAD OF THE TOURAMET (SO FAR) Earlier (bulletin no. 4) we noticed that Tor Helness is addicted supporting his partner with a void. Here as well. Six spades by the way is on a heart finesse. When Helgemo kept on bidding spades, Helness made a slamtry. With his nice ten count Helgemo showed interest bidding 4. One round later however from his point of view a heart control was lacking and therefore Helgemo passed 4. Twelve tricks. If unes knew West was short in diamonds he might have led something else then the K. ow he did. With the finals still to be played we spotted a deal from the semi-finals which could easily qualify as Hand-of-the- Tournament so far. It's all about board no. 4. Let's first have a look at what happened in the match Angelini v. If the clubs were 3-2 he could claim now. Unfortunately for him the clubs didn't break. Even worse, he couldn't make his contract any more. Even with all hands open one probably has to study for quite a long time before the killing defence is spotted, but Fulvio Fantoni found it at the table. Declarer played two high spades and Fantoni ducked twice! On the third spade unes pitched his remaining diamond, Fantoni took the ace and returned a diamond. This way defence established a trump trick. Apparently declarer was doomed after two rounds of clubs. Double dummy he should have played only one round of clubs and then switch to spades to make the contract. But even then he has to stop after two rounds of spades (south ducking twice), and fall back to the heart finesse. Then the cross-ruff ensures twelve tricks. Of course this is an inferior line, because a 3-2 trump break is more likely. When Dr. Michael Elinescu, the npc of the Bamberger Reiter, saw the hand, he enthousiastically stated that to his humble opinion Brink's 3 was the bid of the tournament: "He smelled at the table what was going on. Quite some table presence!" When Khiuppenen doubled 3, Kholomeev tried to find a way to bid gameforcing and launched 3. Brink-Drijver play 'undoubles' in this situation. So Drijver had to double with two small spades. When this was passed out, 3 doubled was made with three overtricks: EW 830. How bad was this result for the Dutch? De Wijs Matushko Muller Khokhlov 2 Pass Pass Dbl All Pass 2 already promised a minor (Muiderbergski), so Khoklov saw no reason to run like Brink did and therefore passed. De Wijs of course did the same and so did orth. S duly took their twelve tricks: "Minus 830, sorry", "Wins 13". The Dutch way of scoring. CAREFUL PLAY BY THE PROFESSOR (PART 2) Semi-finals, Onstein v. Gromov discouraged hearts playing 8. Muller won and played a diamond. South took the jack and switched to the 10: queen, king and small. A spade back to the nine. Here Drachev had to switch to a heart to defeat the contract, but he did not know who had the Q. The discouraging heart by partner and opening a strong club on 15 HCP did the job. Drachev exited with a 'safe' diamond. Muller played all his diamonds arriving in this position: 3 A J 4 W E A9 2 S K K 7 - J 10 7 On the last diamond Muller pitched a heart from hand. Drachev still could afford to pitch a spade, but then Muller cashed A and south sueezed. If he pitches a club, Muller would set up the suit. If Drachev pitches a heart, Muller would cash his ace of hearts and play the 9. Very nice played by Bauke Muller. revolutionary treatment The play did not take very long. That came a littlebit as a surprise since the Professor usually takes his time analyzing all possibilties. Reliable sources informed us that Bauke Muller got revolutionary sleeping pills, prescribed by his personal psychiatrist, who came all the way to Izmir as a supporter and medical consultant. These pills not only allow Muller to sleep well, but let his mind work crystal-clear, when he is awake.

Avrupa ampiyon Kulüpler ampiyonasına Türkiye yi temsilen katılan takımlar dereceye giremediler. ampiyonaya iyi başlayıp eleme gruplarını birincilikle tamamlayan İzmir Büyükşehir Belediye Spor takımı, yarı finalde, ve daha sonra yapılan 3. lük playoff maçında yenilince dördüncülük ile yetinmek zorunda kaldı. Çerkezköy Belediye Spor takımı ise grup maçlarında ilk 2 takım arasına giremeyince son gün 9. luk için playoff maçına çıktı ama bu maçı da kaybederek ampiyonada 10. oldu. İzmir Büyükşehir Belediye Spor: Mehmet Günel (PC), Bülent Aslan, Salvador Assael, Mert Bilgen, Hakan Göksu, ezih Kubaç, afiz Zorlu. Bazı maçlarımızda, boardların oyuncularımız tarafından aşırı hızlı oynanmasından kaynaklanan basit hatalar sonucu puanlar verdik. Ekiplerimizde, hemen her maça farklı ortaklıklar (dolayısı ile farklı ortaklık anlaşmaları) ile çıkılması da dikkati çeken bir nokta oldu. ampiyona sonucuna bakarak bu durumdan bir ders çıkarabilir miyiz acaba? Bunu zaman gösterecek. Pazar geceleri futbol maçları bitiminde yapılan röportajlarda sıkça duyduğumuz bir özdeyiş ile konuyu kapatalım: Bu ampiyona geride kaldı. Luckily for Bauke Muller he rarely makes one. Let's have a look at this hand from the first quarter of the final Onstein versus Angelini. Being the professor - green against red - you pick up: Q A J De Wijs unes The Professor Fantoni Pass Pass Pass 1 Pass 2 Pass 2 Pass 3 Pass 3T All pass 1 is 14+ and forcing, the rest is natural. Against this contract partner leads the 7 (attitude), and dummy comes down: K A Q J 5 2 Declarer plays low from dummy: queen and ace. South cashes the A and continues with the Q. Partner pitches 2, so you know Fantoni has the jack. You win the king and return another spade, declarer takes the king (the six by partner). Declarer advances 9 (diamond from dummy) to your ten. Partner pitches his last spade. ow waht? At this point the professor played back a club, ruining declarer s communications! The whole board: Board W/S 4 3 K A Q J Q K W E Q 7 2 AJ 6 S AK J A Q J K Fantoni took in his hand and cashed his hearts. Unfortunately for him the A was offside and he went down. At the other table Helness opened 1 as East. Brink had no trouble finessing the 10 in 3T. He even made eleven tricks.
