Konane (Conana) 2012 Yılı Yüzey Araştırması Archaeological Surveys at Konane (Conana) in 2012 Bilge HÜRMÜZLÜ Murat FIRAT Uygar HECEBİL Isparta ili ve ilçeleri yüzey araştırması 2012 yılı çalışmaları, T.C. Isparta Arkeolojik Surveyi (IAS) ekibinin 2009 yılından bu yana Konane (Conana) antik kentinde yürütmekte olduğu yüzey araştırması sonuçları, Hellenistik Dönem yerleşmesinin, Gönen ilçesi sınırları içerisinde, modern yerleşmenin 2 km. kuzeybatısında yer alan, 1656 m. yükseklikteki Kale Tepe üzerinde konumlanmış olduğunu ortaya koymuştur (B. Hürmüzlü v.d., New Research in Nortwestern Pisidia: Ancient Konane (Conana) and its Territory, CollAn 2009, 236-237). Bunun yanı sıra, Kale Tepe nin Roma Dönemi nde terk edilmiş olduğu ve özellikle İ.S. 2. yy. dan itibaren yerleşmenin Gönen ilçe merkezinin yaklaşık 1 km. kuzeyinde yer alan, 1267 m. yükseklikteki Akyokuş Tepe ye indiği açıkça görülmektedir (Res.1-2). 2009 yılı çalışmalarında Akyokuş Tepe nin güney yamacında kayaya oyulmuş ve düz levha kapaklarla kapatılmış Roma Dönemi ne ait mezarlar tespit edilmiştir. 2009 ve 2010 yıllarında yapılan araştırmalarda Akyokuş Tepe de Roma ve Bizans dönemi seramik parçaları toplanmıştır (B. Hürmüzlü v.d., Isparta Bölgesi Arkeolojik Yüzey Araştırması 2011: Konane (Conana) Antik Kenti ve Çevresi, Anmed 10, 2012, 52-53). 2012 yılı yüzey araştırması çalışmalarının önemli bir ayağını dört teras halinde karşımıza çıkan Akyokuş Tepe nin topografik plan ölçümü oluşturmaktadır. Yapılan çalışmalarda 252 m. lik alanın ölçümü ger çekleştirilmiş, üzerinde yoğun ve örnekleme yöntemiyle * Çalışmalarımız, Kültür Varlıkları ve Müzeler Genel Müdürlüğü, Isparta Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesi, Suna - İnan Kıraç Akdeniz Medeniyetleri Araştırma Enstitüsü (AKMED) ve TÜBİTAK 111K376 Projesinin desteğiyle, ulus lararası ve disiplinler arası bir ekiple sürdürülebilmiştir. The survey at Konane in the province of Isparta was carried out from 19 July to 16 August 2012 with the permit granted by the General Directorate of Museums and Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism with the participation of the state representative, E. B. Varol*. The Isparta Archaeological Surveys (IAS) carried out since 2009 in and around the ancient city of Konane (Conana) have revealed the location of the settlement from the Hellenistic period on Kale Tepe at an altitude of 1656 m. within the boundaries of Gönen, two km. north-west of the modern town (B. Hürmüzlü et al., New Research in Northwestern Pisidia: Ancient Konane (Conana) and its Territory, CollAn 2009, 236-237). Furthermore, results indicated that Kale Tepe was abandoned in the Roman period and that the people moved 1 km. further towards the north of town centre by the 2nd century A.D. and settled down at Akyokuş Tepe whose height is 1267 m. (Figs. 1-2). During the 2009 survey, graves from the Roman period were discovered on the southern slope of Akyokuş Tepe. These were cut into the rock and covered with flat stone slabs. Throughout the 2009 and 2010 campaigns on Akyokuş Tepe, fragments of Roman and Byzantine pottery were found (B. Hürmüzlü et al., Archaeological Surveys in the Isparta Region in 2011: Ancient City of Conana (Konane) and its Environs, Anmed 10, 2012, 52-53). One significant part of the 2012 campaign was the topographical surveying of four terraces on Akyokuş Tepe. We have so far measured an area of 252 sq. m. on which we made intensive surveys collecting samples. In order to be able to determine the distribution and proportion * The surveys are conducted by an international interdisciplinary team and sponsored by the Directorate of Museums and Cultural Heritage, Isparta Süleyman Demirel University, the Suna & İnan Kıraç Research Institute on Mediterranean Civilizations (AKMED) and TUBITAK Project 111K376. 211
Çalışma sırasında sadece örnek oluşturacak yüzey buluntusu toplanmış, yerinde bırakılan yüzey buluntusu of finds across the site, we divided it into 5x5 sq. m. units on a Quickbird satellite photo (Fig. 3). Intensive field surveys included systematic sampling; and while only finds classified as specimens are collected, the ones left in situ were noted to calculate their distribution density. Especially on the first and second terraces of the southern and eastern slopes numerous roof tiles from the Roman period were found (Fig. 4), and specimens both from this site and from the northern and western slopes were collected. During this sampling, fragments of large pithoi and pottery sherds were discovered instead of roof tiles. Among the finds on the southern slope a fragment of a stone mortar and fragments of a sigillata plate and a base (Fig. 5) provide evidence for a settlement on Akyokuş Tepe during the 3rd-4th centuries A.D. The base fragments have many similarities with the DSA group and especially with examples from African Red Slip Ware (J. W. Hayes, Late Roman Pottery [1972] 332, 340, Form 3, Fig. 68, No. 23, Form 5, Fig. 70, No. 3). Deep and large bowls discovered at the site also support the above-mentioned chronology. One quite interesting form of vessel stands out among the others. A vessel similar to this, found in the TOKİ necropolis area within the territory of ancient Conana together with those encountered around Perge was found, as well as some vessels from earlier periods (Fig. 6). Finds from Perge have characteristics of Cypriot production Hayes Form 7. Those vessels dating around the 6th-7th centuries A.D. have sharper rims compared to the finds from Gönen (N. Fırat, Perge Konut Alanı Seramiği [IU Unpublished PhD Dissertation 1999] 49-51, Pls. 65-69). The first example that can be classified in the same group with the Gönen vessels has been discovered at Kibyra. The Kibyra example is considered among the red slip wares and has a more pointed rim profile than the Gönen example. Two different examples of this vessel form are dated between the 1st and 3rd centuries A.D. (Ç. Uygun et al., Kibyra Yerel Kırmızı Astarlı Seramiklerinden Örnekler, Adalya XI, 2008, 140-141 Res. / Fig. 2 Akyokuş Tepe 212
Res. 4 Çatı kiremidi Fig. 4 Roof tile Res. 5 Sigilata tabak kaide parçası Fig. 5 Sigillata plate and fragment of a base Res. 3 Yoğun survey Fig. 3 Intensive survey yoğunluğun hesaplanması sırasında kullanılmak üzere sistemli olarak not edilmiştir. Sözü edilen kaide parçaları DSA grubu ve özellikle Afrika Kırmızı Astarlı seramik grubu örnekleriyle yakın benzerlikler göstermektedir (J. W. Hayes, Late Roman Pottery (1972) 332, 340, Form 3, Fig. 68, No. 23, Form 5, Fig. 70, No. 3). 6.-7. yy. lar arasına Res. 6 Kase parçası Fig. 6 Fragment of vessel Res. 7 Bizans Dönemi seramikler Fig. 7 Pottery from Byzantine period Fig. 21, Kbr. K Form 10-11). At the excavations in the ancient city of Sagalassos two very similar examples were unearthed and date to the 2nd-3rd centuries A.D. (R. Degeest, The Common Wares of Sagalassos: Typology and Chronology [2000] 256 Fig. 141, 3F100, Fig. 164, 4F120; J. Poblome, Sagalassos Red Slip Ware: Typology 213
- 3. yy. lara tarihlendirilmiştir (R. Degeest, The Common Wares of Sagalassos: Typology and Chronology (2000) 256 Fig 141, 3F100, Fig. 164, 4F120; J. Poblome, Sagalassos Red Slip Ware: Typology and Chronology [1999] 310 Fig. 82 No. 1-5). Bu formların Gönen örneğinden ayrılan tek yönü, dışta dudak altında ek bir yivin yer almasıdır. and Chronology [1999] 310 Fig. 82 No. 1-5). The only difference between these and the Gönen vessels is an additional groove below the lip on the outside. The settlement area at Akyokuş Tepe also features pottery from the Byzantine period (Fig. 7), which is presently being analysed for assessment. Furthermore, when the glazing and painting styles of the pottery are taken into consideration, they may be dated to 9th 12 centuries A.D. (C. H. Morgan, Corinth XI: The Byzantine Pottery [1942] 26). Akyokuş Tepe yerleşim alanında Bizans Dönemi seramiklerine de rastlanmaktadır (Res. 7). Bu kaplar üzerinde değerlendirme çalışmalarımız halen devam etmektedir. Bununla birlikte kapların sır ve boyama stilleri göz önüne alındığında benzer uygulamalardan hareketle, İ.S. 9-12. yy. lara tarihlendirilmeleri mümkündür (C. H. Morgan, Corinth XI: The Byzantine Pottery [1942] 26). 214
